I realize that this article is a year old but I watched it with interest. Since I am retired I have had time to research the various DMR handhelds. After several months of research I settled on the AnyTone D878UV Plus. I could not find a Dual Band DMR Radio that had a Superhet receiver. But all of the added features and very large memory capabilities was a large part of my decision. I mainly operate through my ZUMSpot Hot Spot and I listened to the received audio. I was not pleased with the audio on my FT-70DR through the hot spot and the AnyTone has great audio on transmit and receive. There was a big learning curve on DMR but once I figured it out it was easy to understand. Is the AnyTone perfect, no, but the audio was a big selling point. I use a “Real Nagoya 771”. So far I am pleased with my purchase. The biggest problem I have had is getting repeaters downloaded in a format that I can easily import into the radio. It is a pretty manual process and I have entered several hundred repeaters into my Code Plug. I appreciate the work you put into this video.
Is the difference in sensitivity on the 2m and 70cm band between AnyTone D878UV Plus and Yaesu FT-70D big? It is, of course, analogue transmission. Which radio is more sensitive? The AnyTone D878UV Plus is said to be not sensitive to reception, while the Yaesu FT-70D is said to be the same. Kótree radio is more sensitive in analog transmission?
@@NecrosDeus I really like my AnyTone Radios for what I use them for. We have very few DMR repeaters around here and 99.9% of the time I am using a HotSpot talking on a Talk Group or Private Call to one of my friends. For what I want, it does what I need. I have built a couple of HotSpots for myself and some for other people using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and a RF TopHat. Hard to beat for $70. We have a farm about 120 miles west of us near Natchez and there are no repeaters in the county. So I put one of the HotSpots I built over there and use the older AT D878UV Plus over there. I bought a new AT D878UV II Plus and use it here at the house. I mainly purchased it for the increased Digital Contact List capabilities. I have a ham friend that lives about 3 miles from me and we are able to talk direct with the Nagoya 771 antennas. Sensitivity is not a big issue in my circumstance. If I was needing more sensitivity I would use the Yaesu FTM-400XDR, the Kenwood TM-D710GA, or one of my other mobile rigs I have in the house. I also have the Icom IC-9100 that covers 160 meters through 23 cm. So I have the VHF/UHF bands covered. I am sure that other people are using their handi-talkie as their primary radio and they need the best sensitivity that they can get. But in my case the AnyTone fits my needs. I create a lot of Super Code Plugs for people just getting into DMR so that they can get a jump start in DMR. I guess that is one of the ways I pay it forward. I did not have good success with the FT-70DR because there was a lot of squealing noise on reception on Digital. It may have been resolved, but I have been happy with the route I took with DMR. I have enjoyed learning all about this Digital Mode. Most of the repeaters around here are Yaesu and they are all setup Auto Mode Selection, but I cannot remember the last time I heard someone on C4FM. There is a ham that used to live here that moved to Florida a couple of years ago and he uses Wires-X to get into one of the repeaters in Hattiesburg to talk to some of his friends, but that is about the extent around here.
I'm a ham and just getting acquainted with DMR through my daily coffee clutch of radio club members. Thank you for the video especially the tips about design features. I really appreciate that you got the volume on this video MUCH higher and dlearer than another one DMR for beginners. I have it all to learn amout DMR sso I'll be watching more of your videos. And I read through a lot of the comments below the videos.
Thanks for you excellent and thorough information on HTs. It is refreshing to hear good thinking and quality information on radios. There are many channels out there that recommend many of the sub-par radios. Most of these posts are produced by hams that should know better. Baofengs are great for experimenting with, but but not for serious long-term consideration for reliability. Thanks for providing great information. I have the 868, was kinda unexpectedly happy to see this video lol. I had it for over a year and couldn’t program it due to being a Linux shop, but now that I have a Windows Pc and have been playing around with it some… man it’s such a good radio! I really like this thing, seriously! All I’ve ever know is Baofeng as far as handhelds so this is light years nicer and more sensitive than anything I’ve ever played with lol.
This is VU3BQY from India. Very well presented. I feel we must continue to challenge the industry to make a radio as better as possible. Out of your presentation it is apparent that you would like to continue your hunt for your new DMR radio as the ones in the market aren't meeting your requirements. Having said that, we also need to see if we can really wait for sometime or is there a radio in making currently that would change the game in near future when released. Currently, the only radio that I could find for DMR and VHR/UHF world was Ailunce HD1 (GPS). I purchased this few weeks ago and learning its features as if now. The antenna I am using is AL 800 which is a telescopic antenna but I found no issues so far. The station that I communicate with is roughly 32 km away from my QTH and in a city like Delhi, throwing radio waves that far with all the obstacles and QRM around, it is very impressive to me that is does that. I think we really need to test other combinations of antenna that one can use with HD1. I would also want to add about the reviews you mentioned from Facebook. They seem to be talking about the power output variability. This means that the power won't be throttled up to 10 watts. I don't see it is a problem if you have an antenna capable of loads up to 20 watts like your mag-mount. Maybe I haven't understood the issue here. Would be happy to know more about it in detail. It would seem the "perfect radio' doesn't yet exist but the market seems to be getting better. I did end up going with the BTECH DMR-6X2. It's my understanding that the power output variability is a result of impedance issues between the radio and the antenna.
I own both the TYT MD 380 and the Anytone D868 UV. For DMR both are good radios, the 868 having way more features. If you want a radio that offers analog sensitivity, forget the 868 , it is deaf on 2m maybe a little better on 70cm but the MD 380 has better sensitivity probably as the only DMR of the Chinese radios to have a superhet receiver
I think you ruled put the tyt380/390 because of dual band? or programming from HT. "Tyt 380 tools" is nice. Loading custom firmware fixing the programming thing I believe. Pretty big community with these radios. I have the md-390 with gps.
I'm surprised you blew off the TYT MD-380 and MD-390, both have a superheterodyne receiver, although they only come with VHF or UHF. The MD-U380 you mentioned , has dual band, but uses a direct conversion receiver. A superhet at the $100 price point is a great buy !
You’re right about getting a superhet at that price, the lack of programming from the front panel was an issue for me... I understand that there are alternative firmware solutions but I wasn’t interested 👍
I purchased the Ailunce HD-1 because my ham group uses it. I had issues, several issues with the software. I had to override windows and my virus program to load the software. Finally got them loaded. Then, radio would not connect to either the programming software or the firmware update. I tried on three different computers. Two Win 10 and one Win 11. I wound up returning it for a refund. I am not a novice on software or windows. I am now looking at the Anytone At-D868UVII Plus. Cost $100 more than the HD-1 but probably worth the difference in heartburn. Thanks for your videos.
I got the Anytone D 878UV plus, and I love it! Came with Bluetooth PTT, programming cable, great support from Bridgecom! It is my first radio so can't compare it to others. But I got my license and ordered it and learning all the programming. Works good on mag mount antana, will be putting up a base antenna some to use with it until I can get a base radio but I have been able to work the repeaters with the antana that came with it outside and some repeaters inside.
Donald Smith I too am looking for my first radio. Using the 878 as all things VHF/UHF is an interesting approach. I am sitting here trying to get an HT & Mobile to get going on my new license. Maybe I will do as you have done with the 878. I do like what I see. I have read that the anytone has a problem with intermod in congested RF traffic like we would have in the Dallas area. I have not had that trouble, but I don't live where there is a lot of RF. The bigest trouble I have had is learning all the things with DMR programing. Programing the normal repeaters is easy, but the DMR part has some learning. Bridgecom systems has some great support. If you get your radios from them they have a lot of videos that help with the programing and other thing. But most of all everyone has the things that are important for there radio.
Donald Smith all of these radio have a direct conversation receiver which can be overloaded. The receiver on the Anytones is better than some of the cheaper options.
@@TheSmokinApe I live on SS and did my best to get what I think is the best for the money. I can't afford to get another radio for over a year. Good or bad this is what I have. Being real new I am still learning. I have programmed it and can do local repeaters. But still can't do DMR. Not sure if it is my programming, the radio,or I am putting in the wrong information. But it keeps me busy.

I went to a hamfest in March and won an hourly prize of one of the Anytone 868 HTs. A local friend who also has one is going to help me get it programmed. 73 de N5NUK.
No real competition here if you are looking for features and keypad programmability. The B-Tech 6X2 has features, like the recorder and repeater functions, that none of the others have. The difference between direct conversion and superhetrodyne when used in the real world is mostly myth. Getting a charging port instead of a cradle is always a bother, but the B-Tech comes standard with two batteries...
TYT MD398 10 Watts is the Best over all actually also has the recorder and repeater functions yes it's a Tier 1 only. Did a great test on it on simplex got about 17 kilometers from point to point. Roof Top
There is no reason that these DMR radios don't employ enough memory to hold google maps and have the GPS interface with the maps. For search and rescue, hunting, hiking, and camping this is a must. We are stuck with the Garmin Rino's which are 5 watt GMRS only radios. The Garmin GPS mapping is great, however the radios are poor. The Garmin cost more than $ 600.00 each. Can't understand why memory is still limited. DMR mode is here to stay. The future will require much more memory for channels.

What you said about cost and why first responders use expensive radios....the same reason companies like Amazon and GE use them They need radios they can count on. Radios that work every time they use them. They know these radios will do exactly what they are needed for each time they need them. Lives count on the radios to work when needed. You don't want to be using a Baofeng uv5r if you are calling for backup with people screaming and someone shooting at you. A Motorola or Kenwood would be reliable. They also know they aren't going to fall apart when dropped from six inches. They know they are supported by the company when something in the radio does fail. Overall just a great video

One of the latter that I find particularly irksome is how manufacturers make little effort to support any OS other than Windows. Hey George. If you are thinking about a hand held (HT) you might be lucky to get a mile or so without a repeater, it will be heavily dependent on terrain.
Filtering is important on any radio that is not really limited by how many mixers in the receiver. A mixer can be used as filter but you can do the same with direct conversion. I would not limit any radio by the architect.
I run the GD-77 and believe me you nailed it. I like them, but for the average HT user this is NOT the HT for you.... one wrong move with code plugs and you're going to need to do some major work as you're going to default to .5w transmit power! Broken battery locking tab, LCD issues.... but yeah I still like it! I'm using them in an industrial application and thus far it's holding up... I'm presently awaiting an HD1 for testing. There's no aftermarket protective items for the GD77 and Radioddity doesn't care shit about you after they have gotten your money. If anyone is hell bent for leather to get the GD77 take a look around dn youtube and you'll see some of my more in depth reviews comments on some videos and also you MUST check out www.rogerclark.net If it's a bug you'll find that it's being discussed in great detail here. One thing that's an absolute for me is encryption.... yeah yeah yadda yadda yadda.... mine aren't being used for ham, they're being used in the energy and mining sectors in Canuckistan so please don't anyone get all high and mighty about legalities as we're not affecting ANYONE way out in the middle of nowhere in Alberta or in the barren tundra of the Canadian high Arctic. Now back to the GD77.... the screen sucks, the battery charge time is EXCESSIVE to say the least, it's memory capabilites and size isn't the best but it's pricing is pretty good. The battery life is great, it's compactness is excellent, firmware updates have been very good with their continuing support. The programming interface is quite good (I don't care what anyone says, Windows interfaces are the best and Apple can blow chunks!).... at the end of the day the DMR radio market is so darn hot the choices can make your head spin, so watch every review you can, monitor the forums then jump in with both feet like I did and learn learn learn! Before I went DMR I knew what they were but hadn't so much as touched one, now I'm writing code plugs, maintaining my radios like a boss (lol, well actually I am a Boss :P ) but seriously, I don't think I've seen a DMR that does it all right now or that does everything it can do, perfectly. Like I said the DMR market has exploded and it's a little hard to get concise info bundled up in a neat little package because there's so many new radios coming out and so many people all over testing here and there....

A small update. ... radioddity has sent out a brand new replacement radio under warranty... it took a few weeks to solve but Radioddity really stepped up to the plate in the end and I'm pleased as punch with it.
I have both the RD-5R & GD-77. Essentially, they are the same hardware. I prefer the GD-77 because it is a more substantial radio, rugged and the speaker/sound are better than the RD-5R. The RD-5R speaker sounds crackly (if that is such a word). I love the GD-77. The most important aspect for me is the capability to do both DMR and receive between 480 and 512 MHz and the GD-77 does both. I don't believe that any of the other recommended radios can receive above 480 MHz. I do use Roger Clark's site as a reference, and if I am correct, he is working directly with the Radioddity engineers on future versions of the firmware and software. The case that I use is from TurtleBack. I purchased the case for the TYT MD-2017, which is the same dimensions/button placement as the GD-77. The only issue with the case, is that it covers about 1/2 of the red, green and up arrow buttons. Since it only covers the upper half of the buttons, it doesn't matter to me and the buttons can still be easily pressed. The case is rugged and is designed so that the radio can be placed in the charger without having to be removed, which I especially like. I believe that the Baofeng DM-1801 & DM-5R v3 radios are also the same. I believe that TheSmokinApe's reviews/comparisons are apples and oranges. You can't consider the Ailunce/AnyTone radios vs the GD-77 or RD-5R, as they are twice the price, or more and have different features.
Your reviews are just awesome sir! Are there any models that are worth of looking up better than the BTECH DMR-6X2? I am also looking for the same must/desired list. I would also like to have some audio scrambler if possible. I am intending to buy the radio in Europe, so it would be desirable to avoid importing the radio from the US.
Glad you like them. Either the Anytone 868 or the new 878 are very similar radios. There is a dealer called Moonraker or something like that in the UK you might want to check out.

The connect system CS-580 has a cool feature I like called enhanced monitoring. Anything comes through RPT you hear w/o having the talkgroup entered. Check it out!

Judging by the recent release none or very few Chinese HTs should be purchase: Published on Oct 11, 2018 The FCC has issued a Public Notice called an "FCC Enforcement Advisory," Number DA 18-980, dated 24 Sept 2018. It essentially makes worthless nearly all Chinese-made UHF/VHF ham radio handhelds imported into the country over nearly a decade that can also transmit outside the ham bands (which is nearly all of them).
Thanks for the video. I realize this is a couple of years ago. I am a new Ham looking at options for a DMR HT radio. Good info. I have been leaning toward a cheaper HT and a stronger mobile radio that could cross mode repeat for the cheaper HT like a Baofeng. But I am rethinking that ... just too many options. Haha. Good thing I am retired now and can have more time to research this. 73!

Brent Johnson I have a few Yaesu radios, no Kenwood. The Yaesu digital mode is YSF or System Fusion, I wanted a DMR Radio. I do have the Yaesu ft-70 which is a pretty popular YSF radio. 👍
Unless you carry a computer with you the ONLY choice is the Ailunce HD1 because it's the only DMR radio that can currently be programmed on the fly without a computer.Great HT in my opinion.
I never heard of a handheld that used Direct Conversion for vhf or uhf. Certainly could not demodulate FM D.C. will receive SSB, CW and AM if you zero beat the osc with the carrier of the station It's also a system for simple low power home brewed equipment not VHF, complex, multi channel modern handsets. It's likely to be a super-het anyway until SDR completely takes over, if it hasn't already done so.
Great info! I just purchased a TYT-UV380 with GPS for $99. Price is too good to be true so we'll see what I get. I have seen these compared and preferred over the Anytone. All these radios are getting better with new firmware releases.
Totally agree with you on the longevity aspect. My days of hopping on the tech band waggon only to be disappointed in a short time are over. If there were some assurance that one of these platforms will be viable in more than 2 years than it might be worthwhile to look at.

Really liked your video thanks!! Can you or others out there please help me out as I’ve been researching for thousands of hours over weeks only to get more confused for what it is I need. I know nothing about ham or emergency radios. I’m needing a radio that I can hear ham transmissions as well as emergency on all bands - analog, digital... I don’t have a ham license so just want whatever radio I have to get in order to be able to hear what’s going on out there on all analog, digital, and ham bands in case of SHTF situation. I’ll get a ham radio even though I can’t transmit on it if I will benefit hearing more hams and emergency transmissions out there on all available bands which is what I figure I’ll need to get to be able to hear all that. Maybe someday ham license but not now. If I have to have multiple radios in order to be able to hear all the analog and digital transmissions then please what would be the best radio of each. $ range under 200. Per radio. I received a radio shack PRO 528 years ago but am not familiar with it. In case of power outage, battery life would be important keeping in mind that I would not be transmitting (no license......maybe someday) Ant help i can get would be very much appreciated!!😉👍
I don’t think there is any one radio that will meet your needs. Check out a recent video I did on bug out radios and that might help you out. Glad you liked the video.
My question is in the event of an emergency or shtf can a DMR for example AT 878 be used to talk on FRS, GMRS, amateur , and commercial digitally without a digital id or is the radio a brick without the id purchase of course with an appropriate tuned antenna
I have heard good and bad, I am glad to are happy with the on you got. I have still considered getting one as a second radio but the company seems a little shady. All that drama with claiming the tier 1 radios being tier 2 capable when they weren’t and then claiming the update would fix it is a problem for me...
Anyone care to contrast between the various digital modes available and their strengths / weaknesses? Why this modality among the ~6 that are out there? Second question, what's your all around favorite mobile radio and why? I'm a new ham with a general class license. I'm not trying to minimize cost, I'm trying to maximize value...
What is with this comport interface is "antiquated"? Do you realize how many NEW server and network equipment still uses comports for management purposes.
Thanks for the comment. I understand that some modern equipment still use comport interfaces but it’s largely commercial grade equipment. I understand some might argue the use of a server at home is defined as “consumer” grade. I can connect my iPhone or Android tablet to my computer, via usb for example, without the need to install cable drivers. I feel that consumer grade HTs, targeted to amateurs and that require the use of CPS to fully configure, need modernize the way they interface with PCs.
@@TheSmokinApe the reason you can connect and iPhone or Android to a computer without drivers is because generic drivers are installed. This is seamlessly done in the background without you knowing. Since FTDI and Prolific aren't commonly used devices there are no generic drivers so additional steps need to be taken. USB unlike Serial does not have a standard of communication like RS232. USB expects that some chipset is in place to interface with the computer. That is what give USB it's universal feature allowing for a multitude of devices to connect to it. Some manufacturers just don't have the resources to develop their own chipset so they have to rely on the ones already out there. Since RS232 has existed since the beginning of time it is understandable that manufacturers would use that. Also RS232 provides a lot of debugging features as well.
Agreed and understood, that said thanks for adding that insight to the conversation. Given that a DMR radio is closer to a cell phone than networking gear I think the adoption of those universal standards would be a fantastic value add to the user experience. The reason I call ailunce out directly is that that make some strong claims that it’s the only radio built for amateurs and it’s not plug and play. I understand everything you said but the capability exists to move to usb... I also understand that most amateur radios have the same issue.
They may have them , but the are not used. Not by modern up to date IT departments. That would be absolutely ridiculous to use the comport for pretty much, well, anything. You can manage pretty much all new servers and networking equipment much easier then a comport and so its just not used in the industry. Unless your extremely old school and out of date, in which case, you probably dont belong in that job in the first place if your still trying to manage your equipment like its the 1970s.
I went with MD 380 because I need to be able to program it with Linux using editcp. I do not have Windows or mac. My 2M/70CM radio I went with is Btech 25x2 as a base station and able to program it with Linux using Chirp. Also I do need much wattage for my base station since the repeater is only 9 miles away.
I had never looked at the HD1 until I won one. Turns out I really like it. I actually like the CPS better than my Anytone's CPS, though uploads and downloads are pretty slow. The biggest issue I have with it is that the front end totally collapses in the presence of other transmitters. Normally not a problem, but I won't be toting the HD1 around Hamvention, that's for sure.
I’m looking for uhf vhf in 2020, any suggestions? For someone considering size, the Ailunce is a big lump. Maybe it’s got a lot in it, or maybe it’s a big lump and behind in engineering? Maybe we need tear downs from people who know their components? One question, who do you need to talk to when camping with a antenna in the tree? I camp to escape anyway.
Hytera radios are decent radios but i have really only been using the pd362 for work and they’re good but for ham im not too sure how well they would work for you
Great info. In the Analog world I am very active. I literally had 3 separate Baofeng radios fall apart in the field. Usually when I have needed them most. So I bit the bullet and I bought a Kenwood TH-72D. It has stood up to everything I have thrown at it. 5 Iron and 3 Half Ironman events, a few other triathlons, Bike races, marathons, rowing events and even elk hunting. With APRS, I.can send a text to the command post saying "Medic needed here" and they have my location. The good news is the radio is as solid as the day I got it. I believe that you will be $$$ ahead if you purchas the best quality radio that you can afford. Even if it's twice what you budgeted. Especially in handhelds.
The AILUNCE HD1 has a 200,000 user id database and I have had Zero issues with using the same antennas I use with several other Dual Band HT’s for well over a year and a half.I think a lot of the talk about this is from people spreading False Information because they are trying to hurt the sales of the HD1.It’s the only DMR Radio that I own or have ever owned but I really enjoy it.Some people would rather lie about something they have never owned than just shut up.Also at 11:13. you said that was an Anytone 686 but your numbers say,868 on the screen? Not sure which it is supposed to be?
Third Party Antenna - Milspec Shurecom Antenna Foldable SMA Type Connector or Reversed SMA also those fitments are available. I almost bought the Ailunce .. nahh didn't like it. It's the same radio as the TYT MD398 10Watts. The Anytone is one to consider in my opinion. Good hunting .... Just considered and sacrificed in getting a Motorola LOL. XIRP8268 and a XPR8200 Latin Model. I still use my MD2017 once in awhile. I just let my 7 year old dauther use it. Mega scratches already on the cheap plastic they use on the TYT. Hi good video. One question. ! Does DMR digital radio work when internet shuts down on earth. If i buy couple of DMR radio can i Encrypt those sort of speak privacy. And when internet shuts down in the world. It will still work. Thats my bigg question for preppers.?!
I am tore i dont know which one to get the ANYTONE 878, 878 plus or the BTECH DMR 6X2. It would my first radio as I dont have my HAM license yet so would be just using on the ambulance at work till i get license. I really like the bluetooth that the 878 plus has. But I dont know if I even need it. I just want a radio that I can grow into. I dont have hotspot or anything yet due to not having alot of money to spend right now.
I just recently saw this, additionally the Ailunce HD1 has had problems with the charging base overheating to the point where it melts. Apparently some are marked 12v and some are marked 10v. I went ahead an order The BTECH DMR-6X2. Thanks for checking in and adding to the conversation!

The Tyt mdUV380s are dual band. All UV380s are. UV indicates UHF/VHF. The md380 and md390 are not dual band. One is GPS and one is not. I think its the md380 no GPS and 390 is GPS.
Nice video! I like the TYT MD 80 and MD 90. By the way, I bought two Baofeng BF T-1 they only work with each other with in 100 meters, but they hit the repeaters kms away... I don't understand whats wrong. Do you know?
@@TheSmokinApe but theres a lot of obstacles im in the city, its kms of buildings but here on the street it doesn't work more then 100 meters with the other one, and like I said it transmites to the repeaters it hits back, its not just receiving from it.
@@TheSmokinApe yes, theres 4 boxes on the settings in the chirp program that says high, low, and something more but my computer isn't working I can't confirm now, that can go like 470 max, and in the radio theres a way to power it on with higher voltage.
Well researched & in depth information on these devices, but you may have a hard time finding one that meets your requirements at $200 bucks or I'm not sure a more expensive unit can deliver either.

Arthur Dent the Btech DMR-6X2 is a better option in my humble opinion. It’s less money, has more features and comes with a second battery. The only advantage is that the 878 has a legacy Bluetooth protocol.
Keep it to a cheap and cheerful Chinese brand, cheap radio, cheap batteries, free software, usually loads of UA-cam instructionals to help you along. Simples.
Yep, I ended up getting the BTECH DMR6X2. I have a few videos posted and one is an overall review. Recently I was sent the HD1 from Retevis for some video reviews I posted as well.
@@rjlewis3932 It doesnt have as many bells and whistles as the Anytone 878 so do your homework before choosing. I like the size of the radio as well as the battery life. And now it can do digital APRS on DMR. The AT878 can do both analog and digital APRS if youre into that.

Hey I'm late to the party but I just got my ticket and I'm looking for a simple DMR radio under $100. Everyone has been recommending the TYTMD380UV. Problem is I need it to use FRS. I've seen some "unlocking" videos. Does anyone know for sure that these can be unlocked to use FRS frequencies?
Some dmr radios are already "unlocked." This is usually common with chinese radios. but keep in mind it is illegal to use those radios for FRS/GMRS, although no one is going to really know or care unless you cause interference. With that in mind, while I havent used the MD-UV380, they do show 400-480 UHF freq for TX but looks like you need to hold two buttons on the side while powering it on to "unlock" it, assuming its using the latest firmware. Anytone 878UV requires you to load into a "debug" mode to change the code for the frequencies you wish to use in that region. Other radios like RD-5R seems to be already unlocked. Same with some Radioddity DMR radios, although others do require you to use a method to get access to transmit on those frequencies. YMMV though.
I realize that this article is a year old but I watched it with interest. Since I am retired I have had time to research the various DMR handhelds. After several months of research I settled on the AnyTone D878UV Plus. I could not find a Dual Band DMR Radio that had a Superhet receiver. But all of the added features and very large memory capabilities was a large part of my decision. I mainly operate through my ZUMSpot Hot Spot and I listened to the received audio. I was not pleased with the audio on my FT-70DR through the hot spot and the AnyTone has great audio on transmit and receive. There was a big learning curve on DMR but once I figured it out it was easy to understand. Is the AnyTone perfect, no, but the audio was a big selling point. I use a “Real Nagoya 771”. So far I am pleased with my purchase. The biggest problem I have had is getting repeaters downloaded in a format that I can easily import into the radio. It is a pretty manual process and I have entered several hundred repeaters into my Code Plug. I appreciate the work you put into this video.

Is the difference in sensitivity on the 2m and 70cm band between AnyTone D878UV Plus and Yaesu FT-70D big? It is, of course, analogue transmission. Which radio is more sensitive? The AnyTone D878UV Plus is said to be not sensitive to reception, while the Yaesu FT-70D is said to be the same. Kótree radio is more sensitive in analog transmission?
@@NecrosDeus I really like my AnyTone Radios for what I use them for. We have very few DMR repeaters around here and 99.9% of the time I am using a HotSpot talking on a Talk Group or Private Call to one of my friends. For what I want, it does what I need. I have built a couple of HotSpots for myself and some for other people using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and a RF TopHat. Hard to beat for $70. We have a farm about 120 miles west of us near Natchez and there are no repeaters in the county. So I put one of the HotSpots I built over there and use the older AT D878UV Plus over there. I bought a new AT D878UV II Plus and use it here at the house. I mainly purchased it for the increased Digital Contact List capabilities. I have a ham friend that lives about 3 miles from me and we are able to talk direct with the Nagoya 771 antennas. Sensitivity is not a big issue in my circumstance. If I was needing more sensitivity I would use the Yaesu FTM-400XDR, the Kenwood TM-D710GA, or one of my other mobile rigs I have in the house. I also have the Icom IC-9100 that covers 160 meters through 23 cm. So I have the VHF/UHF bands covered. I am sure that other people are using their handi-talkie as their primary radio and they need the best sensitivity that they can get. But in my case the AnyTone fits my needs. I create a lot of Super Code Plugs for people just getting into DMR so that they can get a jump start in DMR. I guess that is one of the ways I pay it forward. I did not have good success with the FT-70DR because there was a lot of squealing noise on reception on Digital. It may have been resolved, but I have been happy with the route I took with DMR. I have enjoyed learning all about this Digital Mode. Most of the repeaters around here are Yaesu and they are all setup Auto Mode Selection, but I cannot remember the last time I heard someone on C4FM. There is a ham that used to live here that moved to Florida a couple of years ago and he uses Wires-X to get into one of the repeaters in Hattiesburg to talk to some of his friends, but that is about the extent around here.
I'm a ham and just getting acquainted with DMR through my daily coffee clutch of radio club members. Thank you for the video especially the tips about design features. I really appreciate that you got the volume on this video MUCH higher and dlearer than another one DMR for beginners.

There are many channels out there that recommend many of the sub-par radios. Most of these posts are produced by hams that should know better. Baofengs are great for experimenting with, but but not for serious long-term consideration for reliability. Thanks for providing great information. I have the 868, was kinda unexpectedly happy to see this video lol. I had it for over a year and couldn’t program it due to being a Linux shop, but now that I have a Windows Pc and have been playing around with it some… man it’s such a good radio! I really like this thing, seriously! All I’ve ever know is Baofeng as far as handhelds so this is light years nicer and more sensitive than anything I’ve ever played with lol.

This is VU3BQY from India. Very well presented. I feel we must continue to challenge the industry to make a radio as better as possible.
Out of your presentation it is apparent that you would like to continue your hunt for your new DMR radio as the ones in the market aren't meeting your requirements.
Having said that, we also need to see if we can really wait for sometime or is there a radio in making currently that would change the game in near future when released. Currently, the only radio that I could find for DMR and VHR/UHF world was Ailunce HD1 (GPS). I purchased this few weeks ago and learning its features as if now. The antenna I am using is AL 800 which is a telescopic antenna but I found no issues so far.
The station that I communicate with is roughly 32 km away from my QTH and in a city like Delhi, throwing radio waves that far with all the obstacles and QRM around, it is very impressive to me that is does that. I think we really need to test other combinations of antenna that one can use with HD1.
I would also want to add about the reviews you mentioned from Facebook. They seem to be talking about the power output variability. This means that the power won't be throttled up to 10 watts. I don't see it is a problem if you have an antenna capable of loads up to 20 watts like your mag-mount. Maybe I haven't understood the issue here. Would be happy to know more about it in detail.

It would seem the "perfect radio' doesn't yet exist but the market seems to be getting better. I did end up going with the BTECH DMR-6X2.
It's my understanding that the power output variability is a result of impedance issues between the radio and the antenna.

I own both the TYT MD 380 and the Anytone D868 UV. For DMR both are good radios, the 868 having way more features. If you want a radio that offers analog sensitivity, forget the 868 , it is deaf on 2m maybe a little better on 70cm but the MD 380 has better sensitivity probably as the only DMR of the Chinese radios to have a superhet receiver

I think you ruled put the tyt380/390 because of dual band? or programming from HT. "Tyt 380 tools" is nice. Loading custom firmware fixing the programming thing I believe. Pretty big community with these radios. I have the md-390 with gps.
I'm surprised you blew off the TYT MD-380 and MD-390, both have a superheterodyne receiver, although they only come with VHF or UHF. The MD-U380 you mentioned , has dual band, but uses a direct conversion receiver. A superhet at the $100 price point is a great buy !
You’re right about getting a superhet at that price, the lack of programming from the front panel was an issue for me... I understand that there are alternative firmware solutions but I wasn’t interested 👍
I purchased the Ailunce HD-1 because my ham group uses it. I had issues, several issues with the software. I had to override windows and my virus program to load the software. Finally got them loaded. Then, radio would not connect to either the programming software or the firmware update. I tried on three different computers. Two Win 10 and one Win 11. I wound up returning it for a refund. I am not a novice on software or windows. I am now looking at the Anytone At-D868UVII Plus. Cost $100 more than the HD-1 but probably worth the difference in heartburn. Thanks for your videos.

I got the Anytone D 878UV plus, and I love it! Came with Bluetooth PTT, programming cable, great support from Bridgecom! It is my first radio so can't compare it to others. But I got my license and ordered it and learning all the programming. Works good on mag mount antana, will be putting up a base antenna some to use with it until I can get a base radio but I have been able to work the repeaters with the antana that came with it outside and some repeaters inside.

Donald Smith I too am looking for my first radio. Using the 878 as all things VHF/UHF is an interesting approach. I am sitting here trying to get an HT & Mobile to get going on my new license. Maybe I will do as you have done with the 878. I do like what I see. I have read that the anytone has a problem with intermod in congested RF traffic like we would have in the Dallas area. I have not had that trouble, but I don't live where there is a lot of RF. The bigest trouble I have had is learning all the things with DMR programing. Programing the normal repeaters is easy, but the DMR part has some learning. Bridgecom systems has some great support. If you get your radios from them they have a lot of videos that help with the programing and other thing. But most of all everyone has the things that are important for there radio.
Donald Smith all of these radio have a direct conversation receiver which can be overloaded. The receiver on the Anytones is better than some of the cheaper options.
@@TheSmokinApe I live on SS and did my best to get what I think is the best for the money. I can't afford to get another radio for over a year. Good or bad this is what I have. Being real new I am still learning. I have programmed it and can do local repeaters. But still can't do DMR. Not sure if it is my programming, the radio,or I am putting in the wrong information. But it keeps me busy.

No real competition here if you are looking for features and keypad programmability. The B-Tech 6X2 has features, like the recorder and repeater functions, that none of the others have. The difference between direct conversion and superhetrodyne when used in the real world is mostly myth.
Getting a charging port instead of a cradle is always a bother, but the B-Tech comes standard with two batteries...

TYT MD398 10 Watts is the Best over all actually also has the recorder and repeater functions yes it's a Tier 1 only. Did a great test on it on simplex got about 17 kilometers from point to point. Roof Top
There is no reason that these DMR radios don't employ enough memory to hold google maps and have the GPS interface with the maps. For search and rescue, hunting, hiking, and camping this is a must. We are stuck with the Garmin Rino's which are 5 watt GMRS only radios. The Garmin GPS mapping is great, however the radios are poor. The Garmin cost more than $ 600.00 each. Can't understand why memory is still limited. DMR mode is here to stay. The future will require much more memory for channels.
This is a great comment, I’d love to see a feature like this that includes APRS. I get that will add cost and complexity.

What you said about cost and why first responders use expensive radios....the same reason companies like Amazon and GE use them They need radios they can count on. Radios that work every time they use them. They know these radios will do exactly what they are needed for each time they need them. Lives count on the radios to work when needed. You don't want to be using a Baofeng uv5r if you are calling for backup with people screaming and someone shooting at you. A Motorola or Kenwood would be reliable. They also know they aren't going to fall apart when dropped from six inches. They know they are supported by the company when something in the radio does fail. Overall just a great video

One of the latter that I find particularly irksome is how manufacturers make little effort to support any OS other than Windows. Hey George. If you are thinking about a hand held (HT) you might be lucky to get a mile or so without a repeater, it will be heavily dependent on terrain.

Filtering is important on any radio that is not really limited by how many mixers in the receiver. A mixer can be used as filter but you can do the same with direct conversion. I would not limit any radio by the architect.

I run the GD-77 and believe me you nailed it. I like them, but for the average HT user this is NOT the HT for you.... one wrong move with code plugs and you're going to need to do some major work as you're going to default to .5w transmit power! Broken battery locking tab, LCD issues.... but yeah I still like it! I'm using them in an industrial application and thus far it's holding up... I'm presently awaiting an HD1 for testing. There's no aftermarket protective items for the GD77 and Radioddity doesn't care shit about you after they have gotten your money. If anyone is hell bent for leather to get the GD77 take a look around dn youtube and you'll see some of my more in depth reviews comments on some videos and also you MUST check out www.rogerclark.net If it's a bug you'll find that it's being discussed in great detail here. One thing that's an absolute for me is encryption.... yeah yeah yadda yadda yadda.... mine aren't being used for ham, they're being used in the energy and mining sectors in Canuckistan so please don't anyone get all high and mighty about legalities as we're not affecting ANYONE way out in the middle of nowhere in Alberta or in the barren tundra of the Canadian high Arctic. Now back to the GD77.... the screen sucks, the battery charge time is EXCESSIVE to say the least, it's memory capabilites and size isn't the best but it's pricing is pretty good. The battery life is great, it's compactness is excellent, firmware updates have been very good with their continuing support. The programming interface is quite good (I don't care what anyone says, Windows interfaces are the best and Apple can blow chunks!).... at the end of the day the DMR radio market is so darn hot the choices can make your head spin, so watch every review you can, monitor the forums then jump in with both feet like I did and learn learn learn! Before I went DMR I knew what they were but hadn't so much as touched one, now I'm writing code plugs, maintaining my radios like a boss (lol, well actually I am a Boss :P ) but seriously, I don't think I've seen a DMR that does it all right now or that does everything it can do, perfectly. Like I said the DMR market has exploded and it's a little hard to get concise info bundled up in a neat little package because there's so many new radios coming out and so many people all over testing here and there....

A small update. ... radioddity has sent out a brand new replacement radio under warranty... it took a few weeks to solve but Radioddity really stepped up to the plate in the end and I'm pleased as punch with it.

I have both the RD-5R & GD-77. Essentially, they are the same hardware. I prefer the GD-77 because it is a more substantial radio, rugged and the speaker/sound are better than the RD-5R. The RD-5R speaker sounds crackly (if that is such a word). I love the GD-77. The most important aspect for me is the capability to do both DMR and receive between 480 and 512 MHz and the GD-77 does both. I don't believe that any of the other recommended radios can receive above 480 MHz. I do use Roger Clark's site as a reference, and if I am correct, he is working directly with the Radioddity engineers on future versions of the firmware and software. The case that I use is from TurtleBack. I purchased the case for the TYT MD-2017, which is the same dimensions/button placement as the GD-77. The only issue with the case, is that it covers about 1/2 of the red, green and up arrow buttons. Since it only covers the upper half of the buttons, it doesn't matter to me and the buttons can still be easily pressed. The case is rugged and is designed so that the radio can be placed in the charger without having to be removed, which I especially like. I believe that the Baofeng DM-1801 & DM-5R v3 radios are also the same. I believe that TheSmokinApe's reviews/comparisons are apples and oranges. You can't consider the Ailunce/AnyTone radios vs the GD-77 or RD-5R, as they are twice the price, or more and have different features.
Your reviews are just awesome sir! Are there any models that are worth of looking up better than the BTECH DMR-6X2? I am also looking for the same must/desired list. I would also like to have some audio scrambler if possible. I am intending to buy the radio in Europe, so it would be desirable to avoid importing the radio from the US.
Glad you like them. Either the Anytone 868 or the new 878 are very similar radios. There is a dealer called Moonraker or something like that in the UK you might want to check out.

The rtl-sdr is a great way to learn. What I have found is that whenever you get a radio, you see another one you want!

The FCC has issued a Public Notice called an "FCC Enforcement Advisory," Number DA 18-980, dated 24 Sept 2018. It essentially makes worthless nearly all Chinese-made UHF/VHF ham radio handhelds imported into the country over nearly a decade that can
also transmit outside the ham bands (which is nearly all of them).

Thanks for the video. I realize this is a couple of years ago. I am a new Ham looking at options for a DMR HT radio. Good info. I have been leaning toward a cheaper HT and a stronger mobile radio that could cross mode repeat for the cheaper HT like a Baofeng. But I am rethinking that ... just too many options. Haha. Brent Johnson I have a few Yaesu radios, no Kenwood. The Yaesu digital mode is YSF or System Fusion, I wanted a DMR Radio. I do have the Yaesu ft-70 which is a pretty popular YSF radio. 👍
Unless you carry a computer with you the ONLY choice is the Ailunce HD1 because it's the only DMR radio that can currently be programmed on the fly without a computer.Great HT in my opinion.
You might be reading too much Retevis marketing material. Both the Anytone and the BTECH can be programmed from the front panel.

I never heard of a handheld that used Direct Conversion for vhf or uhf.

It's also a system for simple low power home brewed equipment not VHF, complex, multi channel modern handsets. It's likely to be a super-het anyway until SDR completely takes over, if it hasn't already done so.

Great info! I just purchased a TYT-UV380 with GPS for $99. Price is too good to be true so we'll see what I get. I have seen these compared and preferred over the Anytone. All these radios are getting better with new firmware releases.

Totally agree with you on the longevity aspect. My days of hopping on the tech band waggon only to be disappointed in a short time are over. If there were some assurance that one of these platforms will be viable in more than 2 years than it might be worthwhile to look at.

Can you or others out there please help me out as I’ve been researching for thousands of hours over weeks only to get more confused for what it is I need. I know nothing about ham or emergency radios.
I’m needing a radio that I can hear ham transmissions as well as emergency on all bands - analog, digital... I don’t have a ham license so just want whatever radio I have to get in order to be able to hear what’s going on out there on all analog, digital, and ham bands in case of SHTF situation.
I’ll get a ham radio even though I can’t transmit on it if I will benefit hearing more hams and emergency transmissions out there on all available bands which is what I figure I’ll need to get to be able to hear all that. Maybe someday ham license but not now.
If I have to have multiple radios in order to be able to hear all the analog and digital transmissions then please what would be the best radio of each. $ range under 200. Per radio.
I received a radio shack PRO 528 years ago but am not familiar with it.
In case of power outage, battery life would be important keeping in mind that I would not be transmitting (no license......maybe someday)

My question is in the event of an emergency or shtf can a DMR for example AT 878 be used to talk on FRS, GMRS, amateur , and commercial digitally without a digital id or is the radio a brick without the id purchase of course with an appropriate tuned antenna
If it's unlocked. Also, "emergency" is pretty narrowly defined.

I just purchased a DM-1801 (Baofeng) So far so good. Its gets very good transmit audio reports. Dual band 2/440.

My hd1 only touched the computer to upload contacts. Everything else I've manually programmed. Using a signal stick antenna daily with no problems.

What is with this comport interface is "antiquated"? Do you realize how many NEW server and network equipment still uses comports for management purposes.
Thanks for the comment. I understand that some modern equipment still use comport interfaces but it’s largely commercial grade equipment. I understand some might argue the use of a server at home is defined as “consumer” grade. I can connect my iPhone or Android tablet to my computer, via usb for example, without the need to install cable drivers. I feel that consumer grade HTs, targeted to amateurs and that require the use of CPS to fully configure, need modernize the way they interface with PCs.
@@TheSmokinApe the reason you can connect and iPhone or Android to a computer without drivers is because generic drivers are installed. This is seamlessly done in the background without you knowing. Since FTDI and Prolific aren't commonly used devices there are no generic drivers so additional steps need to be taken. USB unlike Serial does not have a standard of communication like RS232. USB expects that some chipset is in place to interface with the computer. That is what give USB it's universal feature allowing for a multitude of devices to connect to it. Some manufacturers just don't have the resources to develop their own chipset so they have to rely on the ones already out there. Since RS232 has existed since the beginning of time it is understandable that manufacturers would use that. Also RS232 provides a lot of debugging features as well.
Agreed and understood, that said thanks for adding that insight to the conversation. Given that a DMR radio is closer to a cell phone than networking gear I think the adoption of those universal standards would be a fantastic value add to the user experience. The reason I call ailunce out directly is that that make some strong claims that it’s the only radio built for amateurs and it’s not plug and play. I understand everything you said but the capability exists to move to usb... I also understand that most amateur radios have the same issue.
They may have them , but the are not used. Not by modern up to date IT departments. That would be absolutely ridiculous to use the comport for pretty much, well, anything. You can manage pretty much all new servers and networking equipment much easier then a comport and so its just not used in the industry. Unless your extremely old school and out of date, in which case, you probably dont belong in that job in the first place if your still trying to manage your equipment like its the 1970s.
Baofeng 1701 it looks interesting, brand new model. Little support or information anywhere.
I have toyed with the idea of ordering one or the 1801, I just have too many radios to buy another... if I get sent one to review I’d do a series.

I went with MD 380 because I need to be able to program it with Linux using editcp. I do not have Windows or mac. My 2M/70CM radio I went with is Btech 25x2 as a base station and able to program it with Linux using Chirp. Also I do need much wattage for my base station since the repeater is only 9 miles away.

I had never looked at the HD1 until I won one. Turns out I really like it. I actually like the CPS better than my Anytone's CPS, though uploads and downloads are pretty slow. The biggest issue I have with it is that the front end totally collapses in the presence of other transmitters. Normally not a problem, but I won't be toting the HD1 around Hamvention, that's for sure.

Great info. In the Analog world I am very active. I literally had 3 separate Baofeng radios fall apart in the field. Usually when I have needed them most. So I bit the bullet and I bought a Kenwood TH-72D. It has stood up to everything I have thrown at it. 5 Iron and 3 Half Ironman events, a few other triathlons, Bike races, marathons, rowing events and even elk hunting. With APRS, I.can send a text to the command post saying "Medic needed here" and they have my location. The good news is the radio is as solid as the day I got it. I believe that you will be $$$ ahead if you purchas the best quality radio that you can afford. Even if it's twice what you budgeted. Especially in handhelds.

The AILUNCE HD1 has a 200,000 user id database and I have had Zero issues with using the same antennas I use with several other Dual Band HT’s for well over a year and a half.I think a lot of the talk about this is from people spreading False Information because they are trying to hurt the sales of the HD1.It’s the only DMR Radio that I own or have ever owned but I really enjoy it.Some people would rather lie about something they have never owned than just shut up.Also at 11:13. you said that was an Anytone 686 but your numbers say,868 on the screen? Not sure which it is supposed to be?
I have an HD1 and about a half dozen videos on it, I didn't lie about anything in that video.
Third Party Antenna - Milspec Shurecom Antenna Foldable SMA Type Connector or Reversed SMA also those fitments are available. I almost bought the Ailunce .. nahh didn't like it. It's the same radio as the TYT MD398 10Watts. The Anytone is one to consider in my opinion. Good hunting .... Just considered and sacrificed in getting a Motorola LOL. XIRP8268 and a XPR8200 Latin Model. I still use my MD2017 once in awhile. I just let my 7 year old dauther use it. Mega scratches already on the cheap plastic they use on the TYT. Anyways, very well said !

I am tore i dont know which one to get the ANYTONE 878, 878 plus or the BTECH DMR 6X2. It would my first radio as I dont have my HAM license yet so would be just using on the ambulance at work till i get license. I really like the bluetooth that the 878 plus has. But I dont know if I even need it. I just want a radio that I can grow into. I dont have hotspot or anything yet due to not having alot of money to spend right now.
If you need Bluetooth get the 878, sale the 6x2 might be a better option 😳

I just recently saw this, additionally the Ailunce HD1 has had problems with the charging base overheating to the point where it melts. Apparently some are marked 12v and some are marked 10v. I went ahead an order The BTECH DMR-6X2. Thanks for checking in and adding to the conversation!

The Tyt mdUV380s are dual band. All UV380s are. UV indicates UHF/VHF. The md380 and md390 are not dual band. One is GPS and one is not. I think its the md380 no GPS and 390 is GPS.

Nice video! I like the TYT MD 80 and MD 90. By the way, I bought two Baofeng BF T-1 they only work with each other with in 100 meters, but they hit the repeaters kms away... I don't understand whats wrong. Do you know?

@@TheSmokinApe but theres a lot of obstacles im in the city, its kms of buildings but here on the street it doesn't work more then 100 meters with the other one, and like I said it transmites to the repeaters it hits back, its not just receiving from it.
That’s odd. Are there power settings you can test?
@@TheSmokinApe yes, theres 4 boxes on the settings in the chirp program that says high, low, and something more but my computer isn't working I can't confirm now, that can go like 470 max, and in the radio theres a way to power it on with higher voltage.
Well researched & in depth information on these devices, but you may have a hard time finding one that meets your requirements at $200 bucks or I'm not sure a more expensive unit can deliver either.

The main reasons are the storage, the CPS and the easy front panel programming.

The Yaesu ft70d has a super hetro, it does YSF digital not DMR.

The btech and anytone are basically the same thing. I wonder if you can upgrade the firmware on the btech with the current anytone firmware.

I bought the anytone recently and didn't think about it until after the fact. I guess it really doesn't matter. Interesting that it's possible though.

Arthur Dent the Btech DMR-6X2 is a better option in my humble opinion. It’s less money, has more features and comes with a second battery. The only advantage is that the 878 has a legacy Bluetooth protocol.

Keep it to a cheap and cheerful Chinese brand, cheap radio, cheap batteries, free software, usually loads of UA-cam instructionals to help you along. Simples.

@@rjlewis3932 It doesnt have as many bells and whistles as the Anytone 878 so do your homework before choosing. I like the size of the radio as well as the battery life. And now it can do digital APRS on DMR. The AT878 can do both analog and digital APRS if youre into that.

Hey I'm late to the party but I just got my ticket and I'm looking for a simple DMR radio under $100. Everyone has been recommending the TYTMD380UV. Problem is I need it to use FRS. I've seen some "unlocking" videos. Does anyone know for sure that these can be unlocked to use FRS frequencies?
Some dmr radios are already "unlocked." This is usually common with chinese radios. but keep in mind it is illegal to use those radios for FRS/GMRS, although no one is going to really know or care unless you cause interference. With that in mind, while I havent used the MD-UV380, they do show 400-480 UHF freq for TX but looks like you need to hold two buttons on the side while powering it on to "unlock" it, assuming its using the latest firmware. Anytone 878UV requires you to load into a "debug" mode to change the code for the frequencies you wish to use in that region. Other radios like RD-5R seems to be already unlocked. Same with some Radioddity DMR radios, although others do require you to use a method to get access to transmit on those frequencies. YMMV though.

You can still talk dmr radio to dmr radio as well are use local repeaters; you will not be able to use internet linking on repeaters and hotspots.
