Hello Jason, passed my Licence yesterday and wanted to say thank you, you were a big inspiration to get into the hobby. I am from Poland so I passed a full license as we don't have 3 stages like you guys. Big thank you again!
Thanks for the mention Jason. BTW, the F Inflation Sale is just my November sale - I’ll be doing something even better for Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday, including on the UV7D & UV9D Plus+ with the lowest prices ever. :)
Just as a reminder, there are also ham users who volunteer at rail museums and other museums who operate only on the premises under a group license. They do not have a ham license of their own. These less expensive radios allow us to own our radios and add features, such as reduced power or weather channels, as we see fit. Having your own radio is also a great incentive to getting licensed yourself. At one museum, on VHF, we are very disciplined and every conversation will end with our call sign. At another, on UHF, it is a Wild West show! Nobody has a clue about the call sign. Budget radios really help us, especially at big events where most operate in receive mode only. Keep up the good videos.
I have the UV17R and the GT5r. Also just ordered the Radioddity version of the Baofeng UV5rx3 tri band as a basic 220 radio with their nagoya version of a tri band antenna that was on the black friday sale. I also have the VX50 which I think is Alincos version of a FT65 with FT70 air band which I have both those Yaesu radios and the FT70 has better Air band recption than the Alinco. Jason, don't forget the Radio Shack HTX 202....😂😂😁which I got one on eBay and works for my local repeaters. I know you have one too!
Jason, why oh why is the dual ptt on the uv-82 rarely mentioned. It's such a great feature. If theres 3 or 4 of you out hiking, fishing, hunting, everyone can have a dedicated frequency and everyone can communicate in two way, monitor and jump in to communicate with this feature.
could you possibly list a few good options for radios with this feature? I am part of a Search and Rescue team and really like the baofeng uv 82 for this reason but the noise rejection of the baofeng radios is terrible. Great video as always and keep up the good work. @@HamRadio2
Glad to see some ht love. It's always nice to have a couple beater ht's for coms. I don't feel as bad when I let someone use one. You usually get your monies worth with these things anyway.
The BTech UV5x3 was my first HT and it’s put in some work with no problems. The screen lost some pixels and BTech replaced the unit without any issues. Their customer service is top notch and being in the US made the warranty quick.
Another great HT for under $100 is the Anytone at-3208uv It is a dual band part 90 type accepted ht for $80 it is also sold as the at-518uv ii same radio different case. I use one 5 days a week at my job. It is rock solid and is also narrow band capable.
Try the DR-1801 (not DM-1801 - its fully different) used as analog radio only, despite DMR capability. Priced ca. 50 USD. It comes with a good front end, fully resistant to overload by nearby broadcast FM stations witch eliminates other Baofengs from use in city environment. Real 5W, good enough transmit audio and 1000 channel. Difficult to program though.

I am looking into a tri band HT. stuck between the UV5X3 and the TYT. I like them both. I am also looking into the 4 band HT . I just may go with Btech . I have a GMRS one and a 70 Cm amp. all super. love that tri band Nagoya antenna. getting that. would like to see 900 MHz and 1296 MHz in a HT. my Alnico DJ-X11 has RX all over . no TX. I have a 900 MHz repeater buy me. the 1296 MHz is too far away to even hear. 73's
I had bad luck with a 5X3. Mine was a dud and wouldn't transmit. Btech promptly changed it with few questions asked. Only to find out there's basically no one on 1.25m here
I have to 5x3 and can hit the few repeaters in my area without a problem. Upgrade the antenna right away or get the most out of it. BTech has great customer service too if that’s a factor for you.
Anyone with an understanding of these radios, I would like some input. firstly Im tech savvy enough to probably set a couple of these radios up, so whether im capable isnt the question. The question however is, Im trying to find a couple of suitable radios for me and my girlfriend to potentially communicate from range in the event of a power grid failure or something of that nature. are radios like the UV-82hp something I should even be considering, or am I confusing these devices with something else. Disclaimer I have about an hours worth of knowledge at this point, this is all alot to take in.
The first question is: do you want a radio that requires a license like basically all in this video or something license free (FRS)? Next there is GMRS which is a license that costs $35 for 10years and covers the entire family which would be my choice if I wouldn't be interested in learning for the HAM license. Then another important question: how far away from each other will you be? None of these radios will talk 10 miles over 2 hills, a forest and a city (without repeater). All of them will do 10 miles line of sight (e.g. from a mountain to another). I find about a mile range realistic in urban environment, a lot more on open range. The UV-82HP is a decent affordable choice....but requires the HAM license. If you're not interested in learning for that license: get a legal Part 95 certified radio.
@@ac7fd That information helps alot. It sounds like the range wouldnt be sufficient without a repeater for my use case. I live in a rural area so im not super concerned about legality. Probably one of the only times they would ever get turned on would be in the situation described above. assuming I was closing the distance gap a bit, would the UV-9G be a decent option. I believe thats only a GMRS radio.
My (tr)uSDX HF kit in it's case with a battery pack and an antenna with a loading coil has to be the best HT. I paid under $100 for the kit and had fun building it. I've always wanted a multi-mode handheld HF SSB rig. Walking around working the USA and the world with an HF SSB HT is amazing.
nice video , got me wondering something .. does anyone make a budget dmr ht with type c charging or a battery eliminator? i had a rd-5r and an eliminator but i wore that thing out lol never did find if the gd77 has an eliminator .. anyway just looking for something to pop in the cup holder, hook the mag mount antenna, and plug in like i used to have with the rd-5r
I think Baofengs, with their outdated RDA1846 chip, are a thing of the past. The world has moved on. The new hit is the Beken BK4819 chip. You find it in the Retevis RA89 and the popular Quansheng UV-K5, 5(8), 6 series. RX-wise (both sensitivity and selectivity), the Retevis RA89 is close to the Wouxun UV9D, which is an excellent superheterodyne radio. But unlike the UV9D, the RA89 costs well under $100. The Quansheng radios are not as sharp as the RA89 in terms of RX, but they are much better than Baos at a similar price. Plus, they are so much more fun to play with.
The QUANSHENG UV-K5 is dirty on 2m the updated QUANSHENG UV-K6 is cleaner with a better speaker and screen, these have the beken RF chip that is opened up to fantastic open source firmware. I am suprised its not been mentioned. Cost me only £11.00 / $14 aliexpress inc shipping
The Biofeng radios are under $100. for a reason. The frontend is not that great for starters. Not to mention too much spurious emisdions for my liking. My favorite is the Yeasu FT65R.
Well, Im not so agree with you with this rank. In my opinion the best handheld radio right now is the Quansheng k6 with the orange screen. This radio is so fun and has a really good battery power managment holding up to 5 or 6 days in standby. With all of thous “hack“ firmware on it its has more features than all of the radios mentioned in this review including a band scope. That uv-17 only hold up for two days in standby and has a little worst receiver costing more than the k6
I can't imagine the K6 receiver is better than anything mentioned here, except for maybe the 'feng radios. The fact that you can hack it and add features is nice, but since those features aren't available from the factory, that says alot about the company itself.
@@HamRadio2 Yes, the receiver is not as good as the more expensive radios, but under 30 dolars is the best. I have the k5, k6, uv17, 5R, h7 and from those radios the k6 is by far the best.
