    Have to give an honourable mention to Kenwood's TH-D74. Although discontinued it still hold's its own next to $600 HTs. That radio was easy ahead of its time when it was released and makes for a good and cheaper alternative to the Icom. Other than that I have the same Anytone and the Yaesu FT3D which though older still does the job for fusion which is all I use it for.

    Honorable Mention, for the beginning Ham Radio operator is the TYT MD UV380. UHF/VHF, and DMR, works well for me. But it is inexpensive. So if your new, and not sure if you want to spend the money, look into this one.

    When I needed a new phone, I considered the Honorable Mention rFinder. But at that time, it didn't work on the Verizon network. That has since changed, but I don't need a phone...yet. My first DMR radio was the Ailunce HD-1; a great radio. But folks around me were starting to get the Anytone 878 so I got one to better support my fellow hams from a technical standpoint. I liked it so much, I got the 578 mobile. Now I'm up to 5 DMR radios from 3 manufacturers. Yeah, I've got GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome. 😆

    Hey Jason... Another great video! Your Top 3 picks were not surprising. They are the best of the best. I am a newer DMR user and love my AnyTone! In fact, I have shelved my FT-60 and use my 878UVII Plus exclusively as my analog (and digital) HT. I am glad you gave an "Honorable Mention" to RFinder. I have been amazed at the number of digital QSO's I have made, where the other station was using a RFinder. One night, I had three stations with RFinders! Everyone that has one seems to love it. By and far though, my experience has shown AnyTone HT's to be the most commonly used radio on DMR.

    I picked up my Yaesu FT5DR from GigaParts a few months back and have never looked back. But I already had my AnyTone 878UV Plus. I don't leave home without either one of them. I swing between DMR and YSF frequently and now have an ID-4100A in my truck. I think i'm having an identity crisis. 😂😂😂 73's from KD5FMU and NOPE 🙂

    Love the Anytone 878 and the Ft3dr for all these reasons. Sure, I'd love the Icom ID 52 but we have few Dstar repeaters on our big city and yet plenty of Fusion machines. Add the DPRS and the Icom isn't working for me. My Kenwood D74 is amazing and I'm hoping that Kenwood has a replacement soon. All good choices, Jason!

  • @pale_2111

    I got a ID-52, FT3D and a FT70. The ID-52 is a great radio and sound good on D-STAR and FM. I've heard they have a Heil microphone built into it. The down side is no touch screen, my preference. The battery is interchangeable with the IC-705 as well. The best part is the 3100 MAh battery, plenty of talk time.
    The FT3D is another great HT. I got is before the FT5D came out. Built in APRS capability is why I got it. I go hunting in the mountains here in Tennessee and having that capability is nice.
    The FT70D is alright. Programing could be better, but sounds good on C4FM and FM. What I don't like about the Yaesu radios is the parasitic drain on the batteries and the size. It's a must to have multiple batteries with Yaesu radios. Wish Yaesu would've made larger batteries with their HT's.

      I have a FT70D and I am ready to toss it! Wont connect to the C4FM repeater - way to hard to program

    • @pale_2111
      @pale_2111 2 роки тому

      There's plenty of UA-cam videos about the FT70D on just about anything, that's how I learned to program and get on YSF with the radio. If you're using the rubber duck, it's a possibility that it isn't reaching the repeater.
      Try using an aftermarket antenna or connect the radio to a mobile antenna on a pizza pan, maybe a base station antenna.
      Also, make sure the radio has the Automatic Mode Select (AMS) turned on when trying to connect to a YSF reflector. If that isn't turned on, that will cause some issues. It's either in FM or C4FM. To turn on AMS, press and hold the AMS button at the bottom left corner of the key pad for a second until you hear it beep. Look at the screen and you should see AMS on the display.
      Another idea if you have the money for a hotspot, that will work out great. I use hotspots for YSF and D-STAR. Both get the internet through my cell phone. If you have high speed internet at home, you can set up a hotspot and get on YSF anytime you want and go to any reflector you wish.
      Don't toss the radio. It's a great beginner radio into the digital voice world. It'll take some time to learn how to operate the radio. Once you get it figured out, you'll enjoy getting on YSF in no time.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  2 роки тому +1

      You have to load the repeaters via MicroSD card into the radio, then it uses the GPS to find the nearest repeaters from that list you just loaded. So yes, that works. The RFinder does the same thing but it loads itself, no need to manually load a list on an SD card

    An additional comment on the touch screen of the Yaesu. I have one, it is a great radio. But the screen is small and my fingers are fat. it makes it a little harder to hit the right button. Sometimes you can use the knob and f menu key to select something, but in a few spots you have to use the touchscreen (such as Wires-x room memory), and I wish it was consistent.

    Yeah, everything depends on the repeaters available in your area. I am kind of a Yaesu fan, but with no System Fusion repeaters in my area, the Yaesu would make the most expensive analog HT. So that is a big NOPE.
    There is no technical reason to not offer all 3 digital modes, except for the "not invented here" syndrome.

    Honourable mention, and I agree they are nice radios, but believe it or not, they are still way too expensive for those of us on fixed income, as we struggle to pay for gas, utilities, and FOOD. Would like a Icom or Anytone myself, but for those prices can I buy a nice HF rig. My view my opinion, and great video as always. 73

    Just have a question regarding the R Finder, I only want to purchase once and get it right the first time so it might be a good idea to buy once, the thought of having a mobile phone built in to the radio sound like a fantastic idea. less devices to carry around. dual sim and connecting via the data on the sim. Brilliant tech almost like having a digital multi shack in the palm of your hand. sounds great. I was wondering what telephone operating system would this RFinder radio system be using regarding the mobile phone system. (android or iOS) does it cover all 3 DMR, D-Star & YSF. and does it have WIFI Blue Tooth and GPS capabilities. Honourable Mention Question.
