I use a block to make it fixed bridge briefly then tune the guitar. Once it’s perfectly tuned on fixed bridge I start adjusting the spring tension until the block drops or loosen up. That technique usually get it done very quickly.
I've been playing Floyds for over a decade and I'm very comfortable doing this already... I'm still watching this clip regardless because you've got some great tips and advice Rob, there's always stuff to learn!! HUGE fan from Wales, UK!!
For me the fastest way to do this is: Slightly overtighten the strings -> put an AA battery under the trem, which is the perfect size to keep it flush -> tune your strings -> remove battery -> loosen springs until its in tune again.
I tried this and WOW!! This made it so much easier to set up . I was having a slight instability in tuning and this completely fixed the problem I was having. Great advice!!
I use a battery as well except I cover it up with electrical tape to thicken it a bit more so that it actually holds up the trem in place. Still a good way to do it

I've finally properly setup my LTD M-330R that was given to us last month and it had quite a steep angle when we got it, it had a Floyd Rose special and it was really annoying to setup. Now it's perfect! it now stays in tune when the trem bar is being used. Thank you!

Your previous videos on Floyd float setup made it quite an easy endeavour to understand finally for my Schecters i bought to replace my ESP(seeing as they are made with the same parts in the same factory) It solved sooo many headaches i had
I followed along to set up an RG7620 I got recently. I restrung it with some heavier strings and it did exactly what your example did. Straight to the point and super informative as always. Thanks Rob!
Skyscraper Guitars has a great method and some great tools for Floyd setup. I've never been able to get through a Floyd set up without putting holes in drywall or screaming into a pillow until my eyes are bloodshot, but Skyscraper's method and tools made the last Floyd set up I had to do near painless and pretty dang fast. That should mean something coming from a guy who used to cry in the bathroom when a customer would come in with a Floyd.
Rob, this is SO helpful - I bought my first FR guitar recently and managed to set it up in Drop C with the perfect float thanks to this video! It’s an LTD with EMGs and is now my Chimaira guitar. You are an amazing teacher, thank you!
thank you very much, did like you said and like you said trial and error, my floyd rose was wayy sunken into the body to the point where the tremolo didnt work upwards.
This is a great explanation of how a Floyd works and how to set it up. A lot of the vids ignore how meticulous you really need to be if you want it to stay in tune. What work bench are you using to do a standing setup? That looks more comfortable than hunching over a table or a lap.
Thanks dude! And you're right about how meticulous you need to be! The workstation I'm using here is an Ultracase tech box. They're totally awesome, but pretty pricey. 👉 www.ultracase.com/tech-box.html
@@RobArnoldWorld thank you. This thing is pricey like you said but it's perfect. I put it on the kitchen counter and instant portable standing work space. No more straining my back working with the guitar in my lap. Seriously thanks for the tip.
Man that bridge is heavy! All this iterative process has to be done with the guitar in playing position, not horizontally. Sometimes the bridge sits back in horizontal position because of gravity, but when in playing position is just fine.
Killer video - I know a floating bridge can be a daunting concept even to seasoned guitarists but I learned a ton from this and know so much more about the it now doesn’t seem as scary lol
Great video as usual Rob. When you tune the guitar to pitch. You go from string 6-1 as you explained clearly in your video. I learned to tune a Floyd by skipping from 6-1-5-2-4-3. I know it's like 2 sides of the same coin but I just wanted to get your opinion on it. I find it balances the bridge better when I'm tunning up but maybe I've been doing it wrong all along. Keep up the great work. 🤘
Great video and explanation. Over the years especially with floyds it was trial and Error regarding setting it up, like you said. But if you get used to it, it is actually not that difficult. The 3-spring method for me doesn't work, because it is for most string gauges in combination with different tunings to weak, especially in the triangle shape. The disadvantage of that spring shape is that most of the force is on the middle spring. I always go for the 4-spring method, also for tuning stability. I recently did a setup for my Caparison dellinger Chris Amott sig. It didn't stay in tune for some reason, replaced the springs (yes they wear out) and added a fourth spring and now it is rocksolid😎🤟
Excellent video. One thing I've always done a little differently is I like to leave the fine tuners backed off instead of mid way, and tune slightly flat on purpose before locking the nut down. Between 20 cents to pitch more on the heavier gauge strings than on the treble strings. Then tune to pitch with the fine tuners. Only because it leaves more adjustment room in the fine tuners as the strings age and stretch from playing. I only changed my strings maybe once a month or two when I was playing regularly, it's a lazy tactic 😂
Great tip! My only argument against this would be that I often find that the strings sharpen after tightening the nut screws. So you get everything in tune with the tuners, then tighten the nut screws, then do your final tuning on the fine tuners... And if the strings sharpened after tightening the nut screws, you need some room to back them off. Have you ever experienced this as well?
@@RobArnoldWorld I found that if you leave the strings just flat enough tightening the locking nut will bring them just about right to pitch, most of the time the nut has barely any effect on the treble strings. Sometimes the low E would be sharp but I fix that by skipping it in the fine tuner adjustments and by the time I come back around it's either right at pitch or slightly flat. And then by the next day I might have to give all of them a regular tune up with the fine tuners like normal.
Perfect float is most desirable! It's just kind of the way it "should be". And since intonation is the very last step in the setup process, everything done to the guitar beforehand, has an effect on intonation. If you haven't seen it, check out my video on intonation! ua-cam.com/video/nDgIHibIE0M/v-deo.html
@@RobArnoldWorld ive been trying to figure it out but thanks i had never owned a Floyd rose tremelo before i was used to strats they stay in tune better if they float
ITS A SITUATION OF BALANCE AND TENSION WITH THE STRINGS TOO.... YOU CAN MAKE THE FLOYD BE PULLING FWD IF YOU TU YOUR GUITAR AT THAT POSITION OR ACTUALLY BE PARALLEL IF YOU ALLOW THE FFLOYD TO GO BACK AND TUNING THE GTR THAT WAY..I CATUALLY CAN PUT MY FLOYD PARALLEL TO THE GUITAR BODY AND WITH 2 SPRINGS...
Have you checked this one out? ua-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/v-deo.html I think you may find it helpful! And as I say in the vid, I typically adjust my action from the neck, and not the bridge. But of course, sometimes action adjustments are necessary at the bridge. But please start here, and let me know if it helped!
@@RobArnoldWorld yeah, i did check the neck after watching that vid, mine looks good with a slight bow so gonna need to adjust the string height from the Floyd ? or should I adjust the neck to be more "straight" ?
@@kopan14 Personally I'd get the neck straight first, or suuuuuuuuper close to straight. And then if I still wasn't satisfied, then you simply lower your mounting studs, by turning them clockwise, a little at a time. So maybe start with a half turn on each, dive your bar back and fourth a few times to get things to settle, then retune, and see how it feels, being on the look out for fret buzz. Because now you'll play the balancing game of neck relief, vs bridge height. You obviously want the best feeling low action, with minimal fret buzz. (a little is acceptable). So after lowering your bridge, you may then need to back off the truss rod a touch, giving it a little more relief. Good luck! 🎸
Hey Rob you wouldn't happen to have any experience with an Ibanez slt101 single locking trem? I cant find any pdf or video showing a complete setup with this bridge.
Rob best Video on Floyd thanks for taking so much time to make this video. I liked and subscribed ---.Doug Marks recommended tuning Floyd Rose 3 4 2 5 1 6 = G D B A HE LE. pattern.
Very helpful on how to set up. Though it kills me to see 13-56 thats so tight for drop c. I use light top heavy bottom 10-52 and they're perfect for drop c
just take the middle spring off detune it tune it up til its eneven the opposite way then throw the spring back on and itll even out as you tune turning those screws is impossible youll strip em
Honestly man, I don't really have any method to it. I just eyeball what looks appropriate in terms of pickup height. I wish there was something more substantial or scientific I could share with you about it, but unfortunately I kinda just wing it.
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks a lot Rob, I have the same amp and a Traditional cab, an LTD M-I Custom 87 with an 81 but I don't know if it's a cab problem, it doesn't sound this tight (maybe you use an Oversized cab which is more scooped). I'm struggling a lot and honestly I don't know if it's a cab problem. It's used but like new.
@@Hagstrom4ever I would doubt that the issue is your cab. I suppose one way to know though, would be to borrow a different cab from a friend or something, and then do some tests. None of my cabs are oversized btw. Try switching up the environment your cab is in too, to see if that makes any difference. For example, your rig will sound one way in a garage, and a completely different way in a closet.
Thanks Rob this is great I got to play with you a long time ago in Flint, MI it must have been 2005, You were with machine head It was a really good time The opening band I think something happened and we got the call from the owner of the machine shop, Good times! I thought about you and the roadrunner United DVD popped up in my UA-cam feed and I saw Andols, This is a really good clear video I love it! do you have any thoughts on a brass block the larger tremolo block versus the stock reel Floyd Rose, thanks for the tips!
Hey awesome man! I love stories like that, and I remember the Machine Shop well! As for the big blocks, I had one built into each of my 2011 ESP's Customs, the RA-4 and RA-5, and honestly I notice no difference whatsoever compared to a regular block in a stock Floyd. Thanks for tuning in!🎸
I need help! I go a whole step down, I have arthritis so i use a normal ernie ball 10 set with a 48 for the low e, does the floyd need to be flush with the body, like is it idal to set it to a point where if u ran your finger over the body, the floyd would be even with the body?
There's an interesting way to do this that requires less trial and error. It involves blocking the trem so that it stays flat, whether it's moving forward or backward. Once it's blocked and level, tune and stretch the strings out. After that you remove the block and either tighten or loosen the claw screws until it's level/in tune again.
@@RobArnoldWorld I totally get that. Ben Eller has a video on it, which is where I learned about the idea. The only way it'll save you time is if you stretch the strings appropriately, otherwise you'll end up doing the same amount of work as the traditional method you demo'd. At least once they're set, you're good - devotion to quality pays off.
@@RobArnoldWorld Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation! I'll be picking up a set to try out🤘🤘 Really appreciate all the content, it's so helpful. Cheers!
Hi Rob, 'm sure you know this.... But what about a Tremol-no system? That will speed up the process to lock it to change tuning? If I like a new Guitar but it's only got floyd rose style, I would swap out for the Tremol-no and set it to hardtail mode to change tuning.
It's funny, I briefly mention the tremor-no in my new video that I'm editing right now! I have one but I've never installed it, and honestly fear it a little!
I'm not sure I totally understand. A Floyd or "floating tremolo" rests in pre cut cavity within your guitar body. This allows it to move freely in either direction, backwards or forwards. I get the feeling you may be asking about a different type of bridge. If you want, tell me exactly what guitar you have and I'll look it up and take a look.
Put 10 gauges was doing drop d tuning on mine and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the float set right I was frustrated with it for an hour I would get the float right then it wouldn't stay in tune I couldn't figure it out and then I had a durr t durr moment and realize I had to add another spring. Now that I figured it out I'm watching this on how to do it right LOL. Day late dollar short That's The story of My Life😂
Thanks for this excellent vid I restrung my EVH Wolfgang (dive only) special with a 10 52 and down tuned to drop C. Guitar came factory fitted with two springs and 9 42 gauge. So I had to add two more springs and tighten the screws all the way into wood. In the end the bridge was almost parallel to the body but the tremolo had become toooooo stiff. In the end I changed back to 9 42 as I found the tremolo impossible to use. Wanted to ask if people who use heavier gauge mostly use it on the hard tails because heavier gauge makes tremolo too stiff even with slaggy tunings like drop C. Am I right???
I suppose the level of stiffness is more acceptable to some, and less acceptable to others. Of course everyone loves a nice spongy and responsive tremolo, but that too is a balancing act to achieve, depending on your setup. Question... did you go straight from 2 springs to 4? I would recommend trying 3 springs in the V pattern. That's what I like best, and I primarily play in drop C, 11-52. I also have plenty of room to turn my screws in either direction if necessary. Keep working at it, and good luck! 🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld I added one spring first. It wasn’t getting levelled despite screws all the way into wood. Then I added the fourth one. After that when I reset it up for 9 42 I took the two springs out but noticed that on standard tuning I had to tighten the screws way more than they were originally. Seems like I messed up something. Thanks for the prompt response. Cheers
@@kashraf581w Only thing I can think of is to maybe try new springs? Like maybe the ones you're using aren't supplying the proper amount of tension? That scenario would be SUPER rare, but, a fresh set would be a fairly inexpensive experiment.

@@RobArnoldWorld Oh yeah but it came with lots of trial and error. I find it fun now, videos like this help so much!
@@tonesguitars Agreed!
This video saved my life! Thank you so much! :D
Right on! Happy to help!🎸

Hey happy to hear it! 🎸

Dude great video.....very patient and informative.
Hey thanks a lot man, and I hope it helped you out!🎸
Man that bridge is heavy! All this iterative process has to be done with the guitar in playing position, not horizontally. Sometimes the bridge sits back in horizontal position because of gravity, but when in playing position is just fine.
Great video mate, thanks alot!!!!
Killer video - I know a floating bridge can be a daunting concept even to seasoned guitarists but I learned a ton from this and know so much more about the it now doesn’t seem as scary lol
Awesome tek! I'm glad you tuned in! I'm ready for some drum workshop videos from your channel!🥁
That's interesting! I'm going to try that!🤘
I’ve always thought this when I was tuning, wondered if a different string pattern would make life easier!
Great video. Thank you. Blessings.
Nice tips!🎸
I love your guitar tech videos, everything is so clearly explained. Many thanks
Glad to hear it bro!🤘😎
@@tdarcs Word! I often do the same, and leave the strings slightly flat before tightening the nut screws. 🎸

Hey, great video. Does it need to be "perfect float" and does it makes intonation problems if it's not? Thanks Rob :)
Perfect float is most desirable! It's just kind of the way it "should be". And since intonation is the very last step in the setup process, everything done to the guitar beforehand, has an effect on intonation. I wish i watch all these videos before i touched the guitar lol took all the strings off now bridge and strings all over the place
ITS A SITUATION OF BALANCE AND TENSION WITH THE STRINGS TOO.... YOU CAN MAKE THE FLOYD BE PULLING FWD IF YOU TU YOUR GUITAR AT THAT POSITION OR ACTUALLY BE PARALLEL IF YOU ALLOW THE FFLOYD TO GO BACK AND TUNING THE GTR THAT WAY..I CATUALLY CAN PUT MY FLOYD PARALLEL TO THE GUITAR BODY AND WITH 2 SPRINGS...
please do a how-to for action/ string height adjustment on the Floyd Rose
Have you checked this one out? ua-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/v-deo.html
I think you may find it helpful!
Good luck! 🎸
Huge thank you for this video
My pleasure! Thanks for checking it out🎸

Very helpful on how to set up. Though it kills me to see 13-56 thats so tight for drop c. I use light top heavy bottom 10-52 and they're perfect for drop c
SRV! Had 5 springs
just take the middle spring off
detune it tune it up til its eneven the opposite way then throw the spring back on and itll even out as you tune
turning those screws is impossible youll strip em
Rob, it'll be super interesting if you do a video on how do you set your pickup height, passives and actives. thans a lot :-)

No! Just parallel. The height of the bridge, and whether or not it's flush with the body, is a preference thing regarding your action. (string height)
Love your vids, thank you so much for sharing your skills. Where did you get that maintenance table? I looked through you links but did not find it.
Thanks dude! Yeah for some reason I can't put a link to it in my gear list. But it's called a "tech box", and you can find them on Ultracase.com

You can also use higher grade springs as well
There's an interesting way to do this that requires less trial and error. It involves blocking the trem so that it stays flat, whether it's moving forward or backward. Once it's blocked and level, tune and stretch the strings out. After that you remove the block and either tighten or loosen the claw screws until it's level/in tune again.
I have heard some folks talking about this method, but I'd have to try it myself and see it with my own eyes to believe it! haha
@@RobArnoldWorld I messaged you on FB. I'd love to show you how.
so simple its what i do ! block the tremolo both ways using coins or wedges no messing around then remove the blocks
Yeah, it's what I do too - block it out, get the tune I want and then do the trem adjustments. It's a bit harder I think but probably faster.
Wow man. Thanks.🤝

Very important content 🔥
🤘
Is it possible to float a flush mount Floyd? At least a little bit? Dive only sucks...need to be able to vibrato. Thanks!
I wish the spring adjustment screws were allen keys or somthing, most common issue ive had is screws heads stripping out
That is a good idea!
Day late dollar short That's The story of My Life😂
Thanks for this excellent vid
I restrung my EVH Wolfgang (dive only) special with a 10 52 and down tuned to drop C.
