      @Rob Arnold -Question... What if the treble side of your floyd bridge is parallel with the body, but sits higher than the bass side? My set neck guitar has this going on and the intonation is flat only above the 12th fret on the treble strings only. Does this sound like I'm in need of a trussrod adjustment (dual trussrods, so on the treble side) or is the bridge screw on the treble side loose? What would you adjust? This is my first Floyd equipped axe. Also, I'm not sure if this is relevant but the pickups are direct mount to the body.

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  2 роки тому +1

      @@munkyenima Hmm.. without taking a look at it myself, I can't say for sure. As long as both sides are in fact parallel with the body, it's ok in my opinion that the treble side is a little higher than the bass side. As far as your intonation, you should be able to adjust that by properly moving your saddles accordingly. Intonation isn't really affected by your truss rod(s), once it's set. But having all components of your guitar working together in harmony is important. How straight your neck looks and feels, and your action, will help you determine if truss rod adjustments are necessary. But from what you described, it sounds to me like you just need to properly set your intonation with your saddles. Check out this video 👉 ua-cam.com/video/tT2N2w3hhVk/v-deo.html

    If you use the block method, once you have stretched the strings in, set up takes about 15/30 minutes depending on if you need to set the intonation, action etc, to get it Bob on. It’s so much easier than spending all day constantly adjusting springs and retuning stings, going backwards and forwards in what seems an like an endless. frustrating process.

    Loosening the truss-rod puts more forward-bow into the neck, whereas tightening the truss-rod puts more back-bow into the neck, guitar necks are actually not supposed to be perfectly straight, they are supposed to have a slight amount of forward-bow in them, this is because the slight forward-bow allows for the vibrations of the strings when they are plucked, Fender usually quote a typical spec of a clearance of about 0.01 to 0.012 of an inch at the 8th fret between the top of the fret and the underside of the two E-strings.

    Excellent video. One trick I'd like to add: before locking the nut, adjust the fine tuners at half of their max height. After tuning and locking the nut, you have enough space for fine tuning up and down.

    • @lone-wolf-1
      @lone-wolf-1 6 місяців тому +1

      I adjust the fine tuner screws at almost max height. Because strings are mostly get looser and you need to tune up 95% of the time. So I have max room for adjustment this way. Only after locking the nut you usually have to tune down.
      Cheers!😊

  • @matthewhale9831
    @matthewhale9831 2 роки тому +13

    What I recommend is blocking off both sides of the bridge block and tuning each string to pitch while locking down each section of the nut as you go so that when you’re at perfect pitch you can unblock the bridge and adjust the height, it will be slightly out of tune when the bridge is straight, but nothing that the fine tuners can’t fix, after that you should have a perfectly tuned instrument without any of the hassle!
    And just for reference, you always want to have your fine tuners in the middle so that way you have room to move up or down, to do that just take the first one and unscrew it all the way, and take the last one and screw it all the way down, then find the middle with one of the others and adjust all to the center point

    • @itsonlynatural1
      @itsonlynatural1 2 роки тому +2

      After blocking and tuning and bridge straight you can actually adjust claw screws to get very close to in tune and then use fine tuners.

    • @Jerminator1984

      How do you get the bridge to where it can be blocked? Don’t you need it already level with the springs and the strings having equal tension? Is it at that point that you block it, then tune & lock nut, unblock, and fine tune?

    Not really sure why so many people have trouble with this. It takes five minutes to change the tuning on a Floyd rose. You should have a 9 V battery or a block of wood or whatever fits in the back behind the block of the Vibrato system in the body to keep the bridge from moving when you are a changing tuning. Then after you get it to pitch, you adjust the spring claw accordingly. I have actually ran backstage and change the tuning on my Floyd equipped Jackson between songs! Let’s just say this is the ultra omega supreme long way to do this. LOL.

    This was awesome. It is exactly how I set up my guitars, which _all_ have Floyds on them.
    I would like to add one thing though. Some guitars are not flat on top, so if you set the bridge to be even with the top of the guitar, it could still wind up with a bad float. Believe it or not, when I first figured out how to set these things up, I got fooled by a guitar with a rounded top. It pissed me off so bad because that one guitar kept coming up out of tune until I made the bridge parallel with _the plane of the strings_ rather than the guitar body. That did it. I never had problems again. You just make sure your bridge is parallel to the plane of the strings and you literally cannot go wrong.
    Other than that, man this was great to see because you covered everything & especially did not try to gloss over the fact that setting up a Floyd to get that Good Float is a _process!_ The good news is if they follow these directions in this video, even beginners will absolutely be able to set up their own Floyd. It will take em a while, but after years of doing it, it just becomes like riding a bike; you can do it in a relatively short time.

    Hello, thank you so much for this video. I recently picked up a Tokai JSD653 as my second guitar ever and it came with a Floyd Rose Ayers Rocker V. I was feeling overwhelmed and looking at different videos trying to figure out how to tune this floating bridge, lots of videos were discussing confusing methods or using very specific tools but your video was very informative. You taught me that it's not as difficult as I was making it, it only takes a bit of time. I got my guitar tuned to E with the bridge nice and level and it's sounding great. I actually like this method of tuning you taught me, it makes me feel like I'm getting to know the tiny little intricacies of the guitar.

    Thanks for the tips, I was resetting up my original Floyd Rose lacked flutter added extra spring, had 2 felt needed 3 and started doing the bridge balance with claw spring screws . Bridge was too high, lowered to the point can pull back without it touching fret wire. The whammy bar socket was loose, tightened screw under the bridge where bridge bar sleeve is at with the Allen key so far got a good bit of flutter lower action no buzz or dead notes when pull back on bar. Will let it adjust overnight and fine tune, and do intonation on the saddle. Thanks for the discussion, it helped me get through the process like how it should go relaxed, attentive and with minimal screw-ups Thanks Rob... = )

It turned out pretty damn good. The float is right. The neck seems to have the right relief. It’s in tune and even after some bar abuse it’s still in tune. Action is good and just right kinda low how I like it. Hardly any buzz at all like I’m extremely pleased I’ve never restrung a guitar let alone dropped a Floyd equipped guitar from standard to drop C! And with a heavier string gauge! I know a lot about guitars and amps but just never got into doing a set up myself! Well thanks to u Rob I’m on the right track thanks again man!!!

    Love these videos.
    Would you consider doing a video showing a complete overhaul on a guitar? Say a guitar that has been ignored for a while and set it up from strings to action to trust rod adjustments to intonation?
    Probably not needed as you have other videos but the order of everything always confuses me as well as how one element affects another. Specifically trust rod/action adjustments.

    I just scored a KH602 for $250 off facebook marketplace for this exact reason. The thing is in mint condition but was covered in dust, had rusty strings, and the floyd was angled up off the body as high as it could possibly go! When I met the dude to buy it, I noticed he kept trying to attract my attention away from the bridge because I'm sure he thought it was screwed up or something.
    Got it home, cleaned it, gave it new strings and a proper setup and it's good as new!! Plays like a dream. I actually feel guilty about it because I know he only sold it that low because he thought it was ruined.

  • @cbvinyard8778
    @cbvinyard8778 3 роки тому +1

    4:20 The trem being parallel to the body is only correct if the studs were mounted perfectly perpendicular to the body, which is true for the majority of most guitars manufactured today. If you look at a stock strat that was fitted aftermarket with a floyd and never had the neck angle reset (a la Brad Gillis), or older Dimebag washburn/dean models, the studs are NOT perpendicular to the body, they point towards the headstock in relation to the body (this is called floating with no recess - the OG float). If at that point, you set the bridge parallel to the body, the knife edges are digging into the stud at an upward angle. Years ago, I accidentally sheared off a stud head because of this - the trem pushing at that angle wore down the waist of the stud over time. Put a straight edge on the head of the stud and adjust your bridge parallel to that. While the aforementioned guitars do not have a recess (some dimes do, some dimes don't), I have still encountered floyds with recess cavities that exhibit this. I always double check the angle the stud is mounted at before adjusting the angle of the trem.

    Man I've been playing for 14 years with a floyd rose floating bridge and had to assume I knew these things from adopting and trials and errors, watching the full video just yet not only confirmed parts of my knowledge but reassured and filled the gap parts too! thank you very much for this and the other restringing video! those are gold in video forms whether to beginners or advanced players!
    Lastly, if you were to make a video of how to have the action as low as possible without having buzzing on any fret, or compromising the perfect float, AND having correct string tension still so that the full-note-bends are still doable comfortably without cutting your finger tips in half, it would be absolutely most appreciated!

Seeing people starting out with Jackson's and Floyd's...man that does the ole heart some good. Places like Firefly (guitarsgarden) and IYV (amazon) and the best value imo Harley Benton (thomann) make it a great time for beginners on up to pros to be a guitar player.

    Another great video, Rob. I tend to block the floyd with a wood block (under the trem itself), one that sits the floyd flush/parallel with the body. Then tighten the spring at the back, string the guitar and tune to whatever tuning I'm looking for. Then, once strings have been stretched out I lock the nut and remove the block. This will then drop the floyd into the body due to the spring tension, however I know for sure the bridge to the locked nut is in tune (or as close too) when the bridge is parallel. I then loosen the springs in the back to raise the floyd to a flush parallel position (as it was with the block installed) and there you have it, the guitar is in tune. That's my jam anyway.
