Strobe tuners are a game changer for setting intonation. I've also found that periodically (like once a year) disassemble a Floyd completely, clean every component and oil all the threads makes them so much easier to work with, tune, and use.
I recently went to a heavier gauge on my Floyd guitar and there’s no way I could’ve done it without your videos. Best the guitar has sounded and the intonation was the cherry on top!
Great video on a MASSIVELY overlooked subject! With that said, I would suggest using a capo at the first fret and intonate using fret 13. The reason is simple: all nuts are slightly higher than the frets. Hence, if you go open to 12, you are really intonating scale lenght PLUS nut height above the frets. If you go fret 1-13 you take nut height out of the equation and only intonate to the correct scale length, leading to closer to perfect intonation overall. IMHO, you really should be able to intonate at both nut and saddle. In short: only if your nut is EXACTLY the same height as your frets, it’s in the mathematically right place. The higher the action is at the nut, the closer the nut should be moved to fret 1 to compensate for this discrepancy.
Ffs been intonating wrong this WHOLE TIME. Simply, I was doing the opposite of chasing the needle. Explains why I can't seem to get clean power chords and chords in general. This was helpful, Rob 🤘🏼
They told the locking tuners are not needed on Floyd guitars. But especially on Floyd, locking tuners are help so much, when needed fix the intonation, or floyd springs, when the you change the strings gauge or whole guitar tuning)
Nice video bruh! You do it exactly like I do. Except I don't say chasing the needle. I say flat-forward. In other words if the string is flat you move it towards the headstock forward if that makes any sense. If the fretted note is sharp you move it back to the body! So I always say "flat forward"That's my keyword for intonating. As far as moving it I do it exactly like you do it I loosen the nut loosen the screw and then I usually get it within three tries rarely do I get it on the first try like you did I think he planned it that way lol😂. Great video as always I like your videos!😊 You're a cool dude and your information is spot on....
The biggest thing that bothers me about adjusting floyd intonation is the fact that you can’t make incremental adjustments - the allparts “The Key” tool helps a bunch at least
Tru story: The guitar store i work in, and have worked in for 12 years, offered me the job because i knew how to set up a Floyd Rose and how to disable a Floyd... 😅😅😅 Man!!! I love my job. Get to play guitar every day and getting to live in the knowlige what i do help others player feel inspired to play when the guitar they have had in or just bought, is set up and plays well. Rather play live in band, but this? A close second.
What about the locking nut clamps? Do they get retightened every time you tune the string and check intonation? Or just leave them loose until the guitar is fully intonated?
Those get locked back up after ALL is said and done. After you're happy with your intonation, lock em' up, and then do a final tuning with your fine tuners. I recommend watching this recent video to learn more! ua-cam.com/video/dksP50sw_9E/v-deo.html

Iv been using the RED BISHOP adjuster to setup my intonation on my floyds for the last few years and its a game changer. Makes it so much easier.
LOL I was just getting ready to make the same comment. Best 40 bucks I ever spent.
@@maxammo6282 Its a great little tool isn't it!
@@TriLaserArt yeah it is.... Blows that key away. Merry Christmas rock on brother.

A great and very interesting tip/discussion! Thanks for chiming in with it bro! I'll be thinking about it! 🎸

Explains what to do and WHY to do it. 👍

Fantastic! I'm a bit rusty on the whole FR intonation stuff, so this video will be very useful! Thanks man! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Cheers and happy holidays!
Happy holidays Jules! 👊🤘
Great video....Actually I'm in the process of installing a Trem stabilizer and final touches of adjusting intonation 😊
Best of luck with your project!🎸

The Key is so handy, got mine 15years too late hahaha

@@RobArnoldWorld Okay cool. I was just wondering if locking them down would change the tension and mess up the intonation.
I'm a guitar tech and i bloody hate Floyds ha ha
You're not a good tech then.
