I just want to say a huge thank you! I'm facing a below knee amputation very soon & after seeing you move around so freely with crutches, I feel a little better about my future.
u are amazing.the dogs are so smart.they do seem to know that they shouldnt get in your way as u move up and down the stairs.so glad that u have adjusted so well to being a mono ped. keep the good attitude and u will continue to recover nicely
but i was all up on andrenalin and drinking tonic, which i hate but it was to keep me awake :D i smoked out the car window with the opposite hand, which was difficult but it helped on thinking about something else :) btw BEST ICEBREAKER EVER XD we went to the closest doctor, then to the hospital. My thumb tip was ripped off over half way through and the tip of the bone was broken in 4 parts, the big piece attaced to the rest of the finger and from the nail and out it was in 3 pieces.
I am right handed. so when it got to the point where i was only wearing a sock over it, i used only that thumb to msg on my phone :D now i am a dork at using both thumbs. But i wanna say again, i think bc of my dad having lost his indexfinger b4 i was born, i was just all cool about whatever they wanted to do with it. Now a new nail has been grown out and its only 96% attaced but it looks good and nailpolish can be used :) if i had half of the outer bone removed -
I had two German Shepherds. My female mated with a long hair and had ten pups (4 male). I wanted to keep one of the males and it was the short haired one. They were Tanya and Reef.
Afterthought: when you're not using a leg for support, for example when floating in water or lying on your side in bed, the knee tends to flex - that seems to be the natural resting state. It might be more of an effort to keep the left knee straight.
When I am staying with my brother in his house that has a stair case with a bend in it, I go up the stairs on my prosthesis and with a cane, always up starting with the natural foot, when I go down I do it like you do. I have to admit that I would not dare to go up and down stairs with two crutches. I have balancing problems and I cannot walk easily on uneven surfaces, when outside I use a walker with wheels. My brother takes my walker upstairs so that I can use it if I have to get out of bed. When I stayed with my brother for the first time after my amputation , his house was suddenly unknown territory!
Goog gawd, you should see the staircase at the PT gym where I went for my week of inpatient rehab after my BKA Sx. It was so, SO narrow! I'm 6'2" so my crutches stand out fairly wide on either side of me. To fit on a tread, I had to SQUEEZE my crutches right up against my body. If I encountered this staircase in real life, I would've just yeeted my crutches to the top and used the handrails. But they wanted to simulate the four stairs of my front walk, which don't have a railing. Uh, those stairs are like two and a half feet wide! So, just.... no! SMH Why not just have swinging blades and set the thing ablaze 🔥 to add a little challenge 🤏🤦🏼♀️
Hi! I think all of your videos are great! I see you like to keep the un-foot leg up,is it more comfortable then letting the un-foot just hang. Will you be getting a split-toe prosthetic foot? Will you wear flip flops or just one on your foot? Will you be painting the toes on prosthetic foot ? Thank You for sharing your journey with us.
I got into the habit of using my wheelchair when my leg is off..I'd rather use my for arm crutches.. I hate using the chair in the middle of the night to get a drink or use the bathroom. .how do I transition from chair to crutches? How do I get in and off toilet with crutches? I currently use a walker in bathroom.
I was thinking the same question as Janna Vervecken; and I answered myself: instinct! I'm not a bit surprised that you hate using crutches on stairs. It looks really scary.
I've had to use crutches on two occasions and absolutely hated them, especially when I lived upstairs in a 90 year old dorm that had no elevator. The first time, as soon as my ankle was strong enough to limp on I did and the second time, once I saw the orthopedist he gave me a boot and I got to hobble, also much more pleasant. Any news on when you can get a prosthetic?
Hi, I'm an orthopedic technician and occupational therapist (not practicing at the moment though) and I recently discovered your videos. I love'm, going to tell my colleagues about you. But I have a question, couldn't figure out the answer myself: you use crutches and when you're using them, you bend your amputated knee, but why do you bend it? When you broke your foot or something like that it's obvious, because it would hit the floor if you didn't, but why do it when you have an amputation?
Extremely belated reply, but I assumed it was for balance. With the knee bent, the section of the leg below the knee can act as an additional counterweight, instead of the single unit it would be if the knee stayed straight and the leg swung only from the hip. I could be wrong.
@@FmodLumin28 I bet that's why I'm having issues at the moment. I'm still wearing the dang ampushield contraption. I'm just 2 weeks post-op BKA. But sutures come out this coming week, and I'll start the prosthesis process this week too. I imagine I'll lose that stupid velcro-sticking-to-everything-except-itself plastic and rubbery looks like a cartoon bomb thing. I should paint it silver
Commented on a other video of yours but forgot to say, even tho its not as bad, i almost lost the tip of my right thumb to a accident at a previous job i had. It was the 3rd day there and it was me and my bosses fault but he took it way mor bad than what i did XD i admit i was scared about what actually happended to my finger bc i didnt want to look at it and maybe pass out,

I never have seen anything or anyone discusss having sex after an amputation of their leg or legs. How does it affect the process or pleasure ? Not trying to get gross or graphic, just curious.
What about real tall, big men? This OT has never been a fan of recommending using crutches...brachial plexus injuries? Appreciate the honesty of, "I don't like crutches on stairs!"
i said that it would be ok what ever they did, they was kinda wierded out that i took it so well XD when they left the room i was placed in to get bandages and cleanings stuff, i snapped 4 photos of it unwrapped and where they had pushed the nail back in place. The nail was ripped off at the root and stuck up in the air with the root XD
Oh oh I have a problem...I cannot nor I will ever use that kind of crutches for a foot...maybe for a hip only becaise they are fir the hip injury. I was using crutches most of my life on and off but the ones that rest on arm and I had a light metalic blue ones, I called them my sport crutches...anyway, now that I am ecxpeting amputation I am completely worried if I am forced to wear that kind you are using...I am going to end up in a wheelchair 😢
My son became deaf after a head injury at 2.5 yrs old. He has speech, somewhat effected by his accident..he had speech therapy for years and hearing aides but he hated them. His left ear is " dead"..his right ear he only hears slightly and no high octoves sounds. He won't learn to sign, won't wear hearing aides and has a low opinion of himself. He did fabulously well in school..got mostly A's.. but won't go to college. This is disappointing as he is very smart..IQ 145... But won't continue his education to get a good paying job..he works as a waiter mostly and does well somehow..He is 35 now and no real future in the near future. How can I help him with his low opinion and convince him to wear aides and go back to college...he went for 2 semesters and dropped out, guessing it was too difficult for him to keep up... Help please!

Wow. You're very capable, and brave! I'm 10 wks. LBK. Just bought crutches. A lot harder to use than I remember. Scary.

When I used crutches I used them the same way up but I hopped down bcuz it's faster and easier
Ha! They are two German Shepherds - long hair (Placebo) and short hair (Greta).
the last bit is how i tackle stairs when i was younger i could hop all day so i just bounced around when my stump was sore

How do you not feel like you're about to fall forward when using crutches to go down stairs?

The railing does not seem entirely stable.

Yeah, crutches on stairs really doesn't seem at all like an optimal way of doing it.
I even think it is very dangerous. If you fall, you will certainly end up in hospital.
Why wouldn't you use forearm crutches instead?
Require too much arm strength.
