    I just discovered your channel. I've been a double amputee, both legs, for thirty seven years. Your openness and willingness to share your experiences is incredibly selfless. To have the information that you are providing back when this first happened to me would have saved me an immeasurable amount of grief. You are truly a special person for sharing all of this. Social media and people like you who are willing to share the intimate details will make it easier for those who are facing similar circumstances to cope with it. You rock!

    I also am an AK, and use P&O Care in Fairview Heights, Illinois. They are great there. I walked a mile for the first time in over 11 years a few days ago. Thanks for sharing. Your knee is awesome. I have the first version of the c-leg. It's 5 years old now, and I'm hoping the VA will let me upgrade next year.

    Hi Roger, first I would like to say thanks for posting the video. My dad recently had to have an above the knee amputation and I've been trying to research the various prosthesis available and their costs. Since he is 73 years old and on medicare, the leg they are providing is heavy and stiff. Can you tell who you went through for your leg? Or who I can contact for information on your type of prosthesis? Thanks!

    I just discovered your channel for I searching for a video about transfemoral prosthesis.
    Anyways I'm Mark Gil S. Bigbig, 32, a bombing victim. The incident caused my 2 legs paralyzed and my left knee was fused hence I cannot bend it. This condition caused a lot of hindrances and I thought that amputating it will make me more productive.
    For now I'm looking for an organization or foundation that can help me about my condition and find me prosthesis that suits my needs.

    Hi, I just found your page and I love it. My question is why does his leg shrink? Is it because of weight loss or is that just something that happenes?

    • @AmputeeOT
      @AmputeeOT  7 років тому +3

      It shrinks because surgery causes swelling which resolves, and muscles are no longer being used so they atrophy.

    But how does it propel? Is that all done by his residual limb? They make a big deal about hydraulic processor knees and stuff like the C Leg but is it just powered by what remains of your leg?

    • @TheSuperru4
      @TheSuperru4 10 років тому

      With any knee you have to propel yourself wether it be microprocessor or not. None of the knees walk for you or lift you up by any means. They help give you a more natural feeling gate. ( leg swinging step to step ) there are a couple of knees they do assist you, but not by much. All of the power still comes from your residual limb or help from the other side of your body.

    • @kingofallwhites
      @kingofallwhites 10 років тому

      Roger Webb Thank you for answering. The technology needs to get a lot better then in my opinion so that people like yourself don't have to expend so much energy. I guess the power ankles are a step in that direction. I am hoping that one positive that comes out of the recent wars is better prosthetics, limb transplantation and tissue regeneration.

    • @TheSuperru4
      @TheSuperru4 10 років тому

      kingofallwhites limb transplant would be so cool.. i would def sign up..

    • @kingofallwhites
      @kingofallwhites 10 років тому +1

      Roger Webb I think/hope it will become relatively common in your lifetime. There have now been a pretty large number of hand transplants. The leader was Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY and they have a good track record of success with all of the transplants so far being successful except for one. It's considered controversial because the patients have to take immunosupressive drugs for life. With the suppressed immune system it leaves patients more vulnerable to chronic ilnesses. Those drugs are improving though and that is what lead to the success of the transplants. I know that leg transplants are now being attempted in different countries but I think it's still early for it. There is a company called ACELL in Maryland that manufactures a powder made from pig bladder of all things that has successfully regrown fingertips.

    I had my right leg removed all the way up to the hip around the year 2007 when I was still a teenager/young adult. Right now I am on my second prosthesis. The leg I have now I got in January and it doesn't bend very easily. My family doctor wants me to go back to pt to relearn and strengthen my muscles so I will be able to use the new leg. I am willing to do anything so I can learn to bend the leg, one day I would even like to learn how to run with it. I have been sick my whole life so I have never been able to run but I think I would love it. Any suggestions on how to get the leg to bend and/or for me to be able to run?

      Jennifer Marie hey. I'm considering getting my leg amputated I have stage four cancer I'm in so much pain. They said it would have to start from my upper thigh and I wouldn't be able to get a prosthetic leg.

    • @thatsjennifer2u
      @thatsjennifer2u 7 років тому +1

      sorry i don't understand why you wouldn't be able to get a prosthetic leg? I had my right leg removed to my upper thigh do to problems I was having with scleroderma. I was diagnosed around the age 7 and the doctors wanted to remove the leg around that time to. My parents refused to make that decision so the doctors waited until my 18 birthday and brought it up shortly there after. I did my research and I asked many different doctors but in the end I decided it was the best thing for me. If I had to do over again I wouldn't do it. Before the surgery I could walk miles a day for exercise but now I can hardly walk to the mail box across the street without falling or hurting. I have put on weight and am the heaviest ever at 207 pounds. I have read other peoples post and they have good results with the amputation so please don't make you decision on what I have to say. You have stage four cancer which I think is sicker then I was and it might so higher up the thigh so you might have to have more of the thigh removed then I did. Ask yourself if you can live in a wheelchair the rest of your life or does the amputation have to happen? I had a choose in the matter the amputation was only supposed to make my life easier with a bendable leg. I wouldn't need any more surgeries and I would be able to bend my leg which I haven't been able to do since I was like 3 years old. I am still having a hard time learning how to bend my prosthetic leg just because I have gone so long without it bending I don't know what it feels like. I would love to talk to you again but I think you should do your own research and ask the doctors all the questions you have. That is what they are there for.

      I know you commented a little while ago so maybe you've figured this out already, but I saw your comment and found this video for you. It shows how you can put inserts into your shoes to accommodate different heel heights. Amputee OT also has a video about wearing high heels, so I imagine you can wear cowboy boots, too. I've never experienced limb loss myself, though, so I cannot say whether this works or how difficult it is. Best of luck with everything

      Your insurance should be willing to pay for a new leg after that long. If not maybe vocational rehab?

      Hey Larry, where are you a Hanger patient at? If you've had your leg for five years, you definitely would qualify for a new one, especially if your insurance has changed. I would call the clinic back and schedule an appointment for an evaluation. If you would like help with this process, let me know and I'd be glad to help.

    Not really complicated. When you have your real leg you never had to worry about the mechanics of your knee, or trying to remember how to walk. After a while of being on a prosthetic you get used to it just like have a your real leg.. I'm about to switch to microprocessor which is only single action, not duel action. I might have said access in the video,,lol. So hopefully when I get good with that one the Amputee OT will do another vid where we can explain that one...;)

    I suffer from pretty bad and debilitating chronic leg pain. It comes and goes but when it comes it prevents me from going to work and destroys my mental health. Are there resources that you know of for people like me to voluntarily get an amputation and above knee prosthetic?

    Dear people, my dearest cousin just lost his left leg due to a flesh eating bacteria. Is there any way to get a leg transplant from another person to reattach to my cousin's knee? I'm heartbroken. He's been through hell and back. He's been battling type 1 diabetes since he was 12 back in 2004 & he's 25 now. He was walking on cane for so long. He just felt like giving up on life & having negative suicidal thoughts & anger management. I need people to pray. He was on life support on friday. His heart stopped 4 times while getting the flesh bacteria off of him.

      I'm very sad to hear that. While I don't have an answer for you I just want you to and your cousin to be strong and time will smooth out the edges. Keep supporting him, he is one of us. I can't really express myself that well in English but I am very saddened by this, I wish you could answer to my comment with an update on how are things nowadays. Is it any better? Be strong my friend, your cousin needs you.

    Careful mowing that lawn~
    That's how I just about lost my foot-!!
    *I urge everyone to wear strong, tall boots when lawnmowing at all times, you never know what might be hiding in the grass.*
    I drove over a thin metal clothes hanger and lived to regret wearing tennis shoes...

      Well kinda. I know a man in Ontario Canada, who lost both legs in an accident. He has two AK prosthetic legs. He drives, walks, and even jogs! I will not give this mans residential town/city nor will I give his name, but this man has certainly inspired me to learn a lot. I am currently working on trying to make a decent prosthetic AK leg for a kitten who was very unfortunate to lose his leg. The good news is, I have the material, the bad news is, I have no ideas on where to start for a cat.
