Found this old thing hanging out in my hard drive. With the Blender update to 2.8, I'm not likely to be able to recreate the look I'd need for these mech models without a massive time investment. That being said, there are a few completed and unreleased shots in here for folks to enjoy if that tickles fancies.
Want to see more animation, music, art and comics? Now you can help! : / sirdubdub
And this is how Hunchback Pilots are created.
“The person that sees a 100 ton mech and says ‘leave him to me’”
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
Or, the person who sees the people he loves behind him, a 100 ton mech in front of him, and says “The only way you’re getting to them, is through me. And Bub, you ain’t gonna make it.”
I like this, a lot. You did good.
@@DCBruinsMedia You're welcome bud. Any time you wanna talk lemme know
“I love it when a plan comes together.” Pay your bills f&$kos! 👍

@@DCBruinsMedia I'm MR_TEX on there. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll find the bpl Basement. Message me, or ask there. We will speak.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, this would've been criminal to miss.
It may be unfinished, but seeing that King Crab through the smoke was a genuine "oh fuck" moment
Its literally the last thing you want to see unless its friendly.
Absolutely! *shivers*
*clack clack*
Yup... As soon as I saw the red V cockpit I was like... well, guess that's it Hunchy... :/
Sent shivers to me boots
The Dad was the MVP, of course, but that trooper that wrestled the kid into the transport at least deserves an award and a case of beer. Probably a raise. He was within squishing distance of a mech fight, and he still did his duty.
@@willdavis3802 shout out to that guy, for sure
The moment you realize the Mechwarrior wont punch out because hes the only thing keeping the King Crabs attention off the transport.
That hunchback twisting to incoming fire so it takes the hits on the left side at 1:19 is such a great scene and very well animated.
Nice, clean and impressive bit of piloting. I'd expect nothing less than the best from a man protecting his son.
"My name is Lukas Andor, I'm a Mechwarrior. I knew I was going to be one at a young age. I pilot Hunchbacks almost exclusively." Other person: "Why Hunchbacks?" Lukas: "Let me tell you a story..."
When they flew away from the field i thought that exact thing... They didn't evacuate a civilian, they picked up a new Hunchback pilot to replace the one that just died.
My name is Lukas Andor, you kill my father... Prepare to die.
perfectly understands that battletech mechs are actually nimble and flexible machines while still giving them proper weight 10/10
It's extremely rare that a fan creation goes above and beyond merely looking cool and attempts to strike an emotional chord with the viewer. From what is presented here I think you have both demonstrated your potential and put that potential into action. Marvelously well done!
D.C. Bruins well you definitely hit us in the feels. Great animations but you’re right, nothing quite like a potentially lost cause like Rasalhague independence and the Ronin Wars. Great job! 👍
@@DCBruinsMedia You're right. When the main character of this video picked up that chunk of concrete, I was awestruck. He/she (I couldn't really tell the gender) meant to go down fighting any way possible, even though it was clearly hopeless, which always makes for an awesome story. I hope you can continue making this, but either way I'm glad you shared it.
I second this. It is marvelous and the storytelling is amazing. I hope that you can find time to complete this eventually.
@@DCBruinsMedia This is the Way.
That means a lot coming from you Farseer.
This is most certainly the most beautiful piece of Mechwarrior fan media I have ever seen. I'd love to see the short finished, but even if you do not, I am glad I got to see five glorious seconds of a hunchback beating a dragon to pieces with its own arm. godspeed Bruins, you magnificent bastard.
@@DCBruinsMedia I am honored to have made your night.
You have done very well. best to you in the future.

@@DCBruinsMedia Is this set before the clan invasion? The boy looks like a young version of "Revival"s protagonist, and the clans are definitely there. Also, holy shit I've watched every one of your animations I could find at least 5 times. Operation Bulldog is a work of art, but this one fookin moved me
Seeing that kid pick up a rock. A FUCKING ROCK. Against a mech. Every couple months or so that i bounce across this vid, it brings a tear to my eye. I dont think ive seen the totality of the human spirit summed up in 1 1/2 second scene in my entire life. But that utter futility and spitting broken and bloody teeth in the face of fate, raging against the dying of the light even if you do it at the cost of your life... *Shivers*. Be proud of this D.C. Bruins. You reminded us what we are. THAT is noble.
Same as Ukrainian Civilians trying to stop a Russian Tank.
They might not be able to really do jack, but that doesn't stop them trying.
This.
@@michaelgreenwood3413 FASA wrote that the Principality of Rasalhague retained its cultural identity through hundreds of years of oppression, and a foreign language being forced on them, and always wanted to regain their independence.
FASA probably didn't know, but Ukraine is an example of exactly that. The current "special military operation" is at least the third time in history Russia has invaded them.
Holy hell, that Hunchback charging in full speed beating down that Dragon 08th MS Team Style was a thing of beauty.
Hunchback pilots are the thing of nightmares
Oh shit... Fourth time watching this. And I now saw the family photo in the cockpit. Didn't realize til now the Hunchback pilot was the kid's father. Brought me straigt to tears man! Straight up balling for the heartache that no Hollywood bullshit movie has ever come close to doing. I love it man. You've really captured the humanity and emotion of battletech.
This is going to be amazing... We need to get this guy some funding to make us a complete movie that is narrated by Tex!!! TAKE ALL MY MONEY!!!!
Dude I just woke up, didn't need to start my day crying in my jammies over here. Fantastic job.
Sorry...
Meant as a compliment. Great storytelling.
When an unfinished, 3 minute animation hits harder than the entire fucking mw5 campaign.
WOW!
It definitely gets to the heart of what a Mechwarrior is supposed to be. An honorable warrior, in the vein of King Arthur's Knights...Virtuous, and unyielding, in the defense of the defenseless.
@@DCBruinsMedia thus this is why the valiant few are regaled and remembered and the cruel and uncaring many are forgotten.
It's Far Far simpler than that. This is a manifestation of the love a father has for his son.
Three minutes and already you've made a story that's more compelling and more moving than the vast majority of feature films. Bonus points for showcasing the Hunchie. :D Poor mech gets so little love these days.
Tex from the Black Pants Legion sent me here and I am so glad he did. This was perfect. It was able to get emotion with just music and pictures. Very good
Same here. Tex 🤘 I second Rakburn.
First time I've ever wanted to see the Hunchback win. Phenomenal job capturing how the Mechs move and shoot without making it feel like a gundam anime. Truly a thing of beauty!
Even though that’s apparently closer to how they move compared to the walking tanks animation typically portrays them as
Never underestimate the little guy with the AC20
And for my next trick an ac 20 shoved up an assaults ass
Army of urbanmech with ac 20 and hunchbacks. Mechs designed around the gun .
Stealth89 the great Mechwarrior equivalent of the A-10 warthog
@@josephnobrega3894 BRRRRRRRT.
Just as the A-10 is my favorite military jet in the real world, the Hunchback is my favorite mech in battletech. And both are seriously underappreciated.
3min fan video causes more feeling and makes more sense than whole MW5. Thank you for your great job!
MW5 is pretty disappointing isn't it? I was playing Battletech and wanted some in mech action so i bought it. It's just like MWO. No changes, no quality of life improvements and still no melee.
@@prophet89 exactly! This game has no interesting story, remarkable characters, any futures in gameplay. It's still old MWO with stupids bots spawning everywhere. Disappointed is the right word to say
The only good thing I can say about MW5, is they made Gauss Rifles fun again... after they broke them in MWO

He’s quite right you know ‘in British accent’
Every fucking time; tears in my eyes when I watch this.
The design of those Rasalhague helmets is so friggin cool.
The music hits right. The pacing hits right. The emotions acptured in the face of the child, even the 'desperate' seeming movement of the Hunchback pilot to hurry back to defend his son... it all HITS RIGHT.
I've seen this piece at least five or six times now, and it does not cease to inspire. Thank you D.C. I really hope one day to see this piece finished, but just the mere idea of it existing is good enough for now.
Stunning sir, absolutely spot on with the emotional connection. I will be awaiting continue progress on the edge of my seat!
Three minutes of this, in a dark pulp magazine style sci fi action with no voiceover, unfinished, and found from an old hard drive made me more satisfied and more into the whole thing than all three Disney Star Wars sequel films. Great job and see you around, Mechwarrior.
that hunchback came in like the hammer of god @1:19!
Holy hell man. Even unfinished this brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic work!
So I saw Tex's post today, and it reminded me that yeah, you creators need a bit of feedback every once in a while. So here I am to give it, because you deserve to hear how *awesome* your stuff is. I found this particular short film, and your work in general, before I encountered the BPL. I've made my way back over frequently over the last few years to rewatch, and have always been excited to see more of your work. Between this, your Operation Bulldog vid, and the stuff you've put on-screen with TTBT, I've been hooked. Seriously, bud, you've got skills, and I'm glad you decided to share the result of your efforts with us internet strangers.
Keep up the awesome, Bruins. It's always a treat to see something new from you. Thanks for keeping me entertained, and for feeding my love of BT when there's so little content like what you've made.
Herbie Urbie Derbie, Tex, and the Black Pants Legion brought me here.
It's 12:36 AM on January 1st. Happy 2024, guys.
Holy shit....
No, I'm not crying... You're crying...
ETA: yet another BPL redirect... Thank you to tex for sending this out. Creator dude... you need to finish this, even if it's just as a short. This is some truly beautiful stuff. It doesn't even need voice work, really, as long as you keep the expressiveness where it is here.
And, whilst I've already seen it in other comments, keep it up, you beautiful, magnificent bastard.
*I'm* not crying, *YOU'RE* crying!
Seriously though, this is some of the most touching BattleTech content (or any content) I've ever watched.
In 3 minutes you told a more heart gripping story then Hollywood and tell in 3 seasons. I could feel the pain and agony of the kid. My wife was balling her eyes out. Never give up making stories.
Dude you show how truly terrifying these things are. Holly crap.
@@DCBruinsMedia
You take a mortal man
Put him in control
Watch him become a god
Watch people’s heads a-roll
Brutal. So that's where she gets her love of the Hunchback! I love how the King Crab was a glowering nemesis in smoke and shadow.
King Crabs make great "villain" mechs. They just have a naturally menacing look to them.
@@David_Fellner the king crab is my favourite assault for that reason.
It just LOOKS like it wants to rip and tear.
He, not she.
If I could give a thousand likes I would this hits me in the feels and any animation that can do that does not deserve to be left or forgotten. I hope in the future this project to be reborn and made in to a show.
2:21 for every non battletech player. Theres 4 weight classes that usually give a idea on a mechs role. While genuinely every mech can fill many roles here's a extremely dumbed down version, I'll try my best but it's a LOT of info compressed.
Light- light armor, light firepower, and unmatched speed
Medium- mixed bag
Heavy- good armor, good firepower, poor speed, and amazing fire support
Assault- nearly impossible too put down, lots of fire power, INCREDIBLY slow, and easily able too put down mostly everything under its weight class with 1-3 attacks
That mech with the red visor was a kind crab assault mech. Its reputation is well earned for being nearly impossible too put down, the best way to kill it is with another assault mech. while the other mechs can put down assault mechs it takes a LOT of effort and team work and always ends with causalities.
And that other mech is the hunchback, a medium mech known for its firepower, they can punch above their weight against heavies and in some events even tangle with assault mechs if their lance mates are there to help. But alone?
Sadly the moment that king crab rolled onto the battlefield the hunchback was nothing more than another name on the KIA log.
For anyone who has no idea what battle tech is i suggest TheBlackPantsLegion and Big_Red_40k. They have good guides for beginners.
I thought that, even for people who aren't familiar with the background and wouldn't know a King Crab when they see it, DCBruins did a good job conveying that it's something _bigger_ than the hero's 'mech.
...And this is it for him. 😨
i love this animation so much, after playing through MechWarrior 2 Mercenaries again, as an adult actually reading the mission blurbs, sh█t got REAL in oldschool BattleTech, and i don't think alot of people realize this even now, that even in the 31st century, war is hell
@@DCBruinsMedia those words sound hopeful, inspirational even, hell, even reading the lore all the way up to the dark ages, Rasalhague ends up better than they did during the Clan invasion by declaring an alliance with Clan Ghost Bear (i know i skipped over practically a century of lore) but the factions that shoot that idea down (at least from my perspective) would be the tyranny of the Draconis Combine, and let's not forget what House Stiner did to House Davion during the Fedcom civil war, and of course, let's not forget about Comstar, or should i say the dangers of extremist fanaticism :D

I come back to this from time to time... Such a great piece of art. Thank you for creating this.
Love how you had the hunchback torso twisted to present the none weapon pod shoulder/side to the incoming damage.
Tex and Farseer approved, and we'll deserved, this is sick.
I've seen this I don't even know how many times. I would absolutely love to see it finished someday but either way, gets me every time
It certainly tickles my fancy and I'd want to watch the finished movie. Put it on Kickstarter and I'll back you.
Lol go on Indiegogo and I'll back you. :)
I agree. Shut up and take my money!
aaaaaa caught me off guard with the feels, if it's ever in your time schedule it'd be amazing to see this finished! Thank you so much for sharing!
I thought that music sounded like Mass Effect 3. It has the same emotional effect here as it did in Mass Effect, and is a good choice. You also animated very well in time with the music. Hit all the right feels. :)
This animation still lives rent free, utilities included, with free meals in my head, i love it. We need MORE BATTLETECH.
way cool, i think it actually works well with just the story board form. makes it feel like you are seeing a memory. /thumbsup
This hit me harder than an AC20. Incredibly beautiful, horrifying, and powerful all at the same time. Just got lucky enough to stumble onto this. I know you're not likely to finish this, but if you did...would be amazing.
Hope you're not shy about asking for support from any one of us.
first 2 times i watched this i missed the photo at 2:25 but now that i have seen it i am tearing up
the mass effect soundtrack is carrying a lot of the emotional work here but it is a perfectly paired match
Okay, I was not expecting to be fighting back tears over a Battletech video, let alone an unfinished one... You did such a fantastic job with the music, the pacing, and the twists.
nothing to see here, just the Draconis Combine casually committing war crimes, as per usual 😂
for real though, I love the grit and brutality shown here. Really showcases the struggle FRR went through to gain their independence, also very subtle to pay attention to their Norse heritage with the beards and helmets
that hunchack design is awesome i love the heat guard like detail around the gunmount on the right torso
this needs to be finished that was so good, like chills good
It's a little detail that gets me the feels, but how the Hunchback focus on the kid and doesn't go down until he knows he's safe and away. I can almost hear the mechwarrior scream GET OUTTA HERE KID, NOW! In my head, he smiled at that last second before the KC finished him.
Oh MAN! That was some slick movement animation on that Dragon! Really felt the impacts.
Glorious Rasalhague Film
@@DCBruinsMedia I am curious about your thoughts on something, from the perspective of the person who made this and an artist person. Also after having watched this a few times and tossed the idea around in my head. Mind i am not asking for anything, i am just curious what you would think on an idea like this.
So, this is made up of completed shots and uncompleted shots from if i understand the video description. The idea i had in mind was, for making a smaller, fan project animation for something like this. What if you did that kind of style and mix, but on purpose? Maybe clean up the 'uncompleted' shots just a bit, though that could take far more time than my lacking knowledge knows. But then, only having important, specific moments be fully 'created'. Like certain mech fighting scenes, while the others are like with the Hunchback and the Jenner. Not fully shown, but plenty enough detail, movement and action to be interesting and show everything that is happening. And then just doing all the shots, like that. Most, undone but with as much polish as can be put on them while not putting too much work into them. I have absolutely no idea how hard any of this would actually be mind. This is just a crazy idea from a guy who likes to ask questions.
Can we just address the smooth fluidity of the animations?! Perfect.
Emotion? In a BattleTech fan film? Good work, even if it isn't complete.
I really hope you come back and finish this someday. This is incredible.
Kid became a hunchback pilot. A real hunchback pilot. I am proud.
I dunno what it is about the ME3 soundtrack, but it hits this
I love the work done here its amazing, this had me on the edge of my seat from the start. Once the Hunchback showed up all i could think was the kids got a chance now. After the Jenner I figured now the area has a chance. But then that shadow and all i could think was AHHHHHHHHH SHEEEEEEEET KING KRAB.
You be nice to see this become a feature lenght series. Hope that, someday, we can get a Battletech/Mechwarrior series. Well, this franchise has, bessides everything, not just survived but has thrived. So, with even a clanner mechwarrior on the way, i'd say anything is possible.
I loved how desperate the blue eyed kid was and yet so determined that they thought about just throwing a rock at a freaking mech just to give them the finger for what they did to their world.
Fighting the most advanced piece of human-created warfighting technology with the oldest weapon in history. Its almost poetic.
Dude you're skilled. I want more
BPL sent me and i was not disappointed. Solid Work
This is everything a mechwarrior story should be. Absolutely phenomenal.
I seriously love when the hunchback grabs the Dragon's arm and shoots a round into it, there is something I wish you could do in the games
It's a character perk from the RPG. make a punch attack, and then an arm-mounted weapon on the punching arm gets a shot with a point-blank bonus to hit. In this case the Hunchback's PC pilot asked the GM if it was okay to use the big gun, and the GM said "I'll allow it!" (Be careful when the GM is willing to let you look cool, there may be a King Crab one block over.)
At first I thought I was impressed by the upped animation quality during the dragon sequence. In truth, the sketched scene of the picture of the boy and his father hit so much harder. That's when I knew that this was a great animation.
The torso twist is a weirdly underrepresented tactic in most MW cinematics!
The whole duel does a good job of *showing* the Mechs moving how the fiction always describes it, but no video game has successfully simulated.
Plus the hereditary connection with the characters is wonderful. FASA wanted MechWarriors to inhabit the same social space as knights of the Middle Ages - frightfully effective on the field but requiring *huge* material investments to be effective. Something often overlooked when pilots get treated as anonymous tank crew but with a goofy call-sign and more one-liners.
Love the focus on individual characters. Reminds me of the old, good, Godzilla movies, the struggle of humanity in the face of an unstoppable, inescapable, elemental fury bent on destroying everything...
Can't wait to see the finished project.
I mean, that's basically what they are
Is this meant to be a standalone, or part of an eventual series?
Even as an unfinished hobby project this bit kicks ass. It makes the viewer invested in the kid, the rescue, and the heroic stand of the Hunchback. I hope and pray that you can someday finish it in the manner it deserves. It's the perfect introduction to an implied bigger story to inspire new and old players to the game.
My god... give this man a team! A funding! Holy shit, I have never seen something in my life I've wanted more than a proper Battletech anime with a good, solid story, and this guy has everything something like that needs!
I seriously hope you get picked up by some animation studio, your talent is beyond anything I've seen in recent years
Oh my Lord, that... that was awesome. Emotionally engaging, touching and inspiring. The story told here was enthralling dramatic without a single word being spoken. The music is next level, literally gave me shivers. Well done. Well done.
Someone get this person a DANM medal for making something this beutiful emotional suprise. This is unfinished and it still hits hard. Great work. I'll be watching out for more... o7
Had to come back and re-watch this after seeing the clip in the BPL Hunchback episode. Such a good film, thank you.
Honestly this really gives me Amaris civil war vibes. When the SLDF is just doing everything it can to put an end to everything while trying to keep civvies safe and Amaris was all the way in "fuck the civvies too." Just my two cents. Beautiful piece, really conveys a core aspect of what Battletech is all about. The music selection is the last nail.
Came here after the Parade. I am now legit tearing up and I am in awe of this work. Nice use of the ME3 piece. Bravo.
You, you do good stuff. Please make more.
Came back to re-watch this after Tex's latest talk that used your footage because why wouldn't he. It's amazing!
This is great we need a full film of this!
That was glorious!!! Even in an unfinished state the storytelling was spot on. Being silent in its current state, flipping between animation amd storyboard it actually gave the scene a flashback / memory type feel to it all. Emotionally charged, but fractured with only the most powerful moments being tangible and fluid. As others have stated. Of you kickstart it, I will back it. I look forward to your success :)
Dude. Moar. Please moar. This is AWESOME. AWESOME. And Hunchback :P LOVE THIS WORK.
Once again a fan makes something better than anything Hollywood has done in the past five years. Killer work man.
Damn, dude. That bit when the Hunchback charges in. Perfection.
Awesome stuff here man! Been a HUGE fan of yours since I first saw Revival when it premiered. I love how you capture this unseen civilian POV in the Battletech universe. You just don't get the proper image of the scale, size, and destruction of these weapons of war without showing how it looks in the eyes of a scared kid.
Long live Rasalhague
This is incredibly well done. I've been into Battletech since 91, and this strikes an emotional chord. Thanks for this.
First time coming across this! Really freaking good. Beautiful work
I don't know how I missed this until now! I think I've watched it about a dozen times and it gets better each time. Amazing. I think animation is vastly superior for conveying the power of Battlemechs than the in-game CGI that usually gets used. That loses some of the grace and agility that these Mechs have. This captures their awesome size and power perfectly. Then the emotional aspect of the people involved and their story is what elevates it to something truly special. Please finish this!
This is amazing. The ME3 music gave me the feels something fierce.
Impressive! Even though you're not likely to finish it, it is still amazing. Hoping you come back to it sometime in the future and are able to complete this amazing story line.
Some pretty good story and action ideas in this. More than I was expecting.
Damn. Well done. Hunchy getting the hero treatment.
daaaamn! stared at screen the whole time wide eyed and mouth hanging open. just wow you should be proud of what you have so far
We really need an update for this.
i can FEEL the power of the AC/20 with this
Hahahaha. In true form, the Dragon gets taken out with ease, and even the quick Jenner is no match for the mighty Hunchback! Incredible animation. Love this!
I never thought an unfinished Battletech animatic could be this moving. The music is superb.
The shot of the Hunchback charging in makes me cheer every time. ❤
I want this as the official Battletech movie, and it NEEDS to have this as the opening scene!
Damn. For not having dialogue this says so much in just a few minute.
I got chills when the Hunchback first showed up there.
