That's amazing 👏 DSM4EVER
I have owned my dsm since 2003 and have been making over 500hp since then extremely reliably. Also I know of more Supras that have gotten crankwalk then the earlier 2g 7 bolt motors, crank walk is so over played with the haters. Also I know Civics break way more than any of my 4g powered vehicles.
Crank walk is caused by not putting the 12mm bolt on the bottom back side of the transmission in causing excessive force on the main journal bearing when pushing in the clutch.
I seem to remember there was a lot of regular joe owners that had their unmodified cars fail also which is probably why Mitsubishi updated the 2gb to the Evo style split thrust washers. I feel like it was weak from factory and the lack of that bolt, overly stiff clutches, clutch-in cold starts, balance shaft deletes causing crank harmonics, etc just accelerated wear?

Actually, as a former DSM Tuner, the 4G63 was actually used not just in the Evo 8/9, but ALSO every single Lancer Evolution ever made as well as multiple generations of its predecessor; the Galant VR-4. From 1987 to 2008, over 20 years straight of this motor. It’s not just a Legendary tuner motor, it’s is probably THE most famous and ubiquitous tuner motor of all time. Other legendary motors at the time were the Nissan SR20-DET, 2JZ-GTE, and B16/18 just to name a few. This was the greatest era of tuner cars, ever.
We agree with a lot of what you had to say here, but there was an Evo that wasn't powered by a 4g63... unless you're one of those people who don't think the Evo X is a "real" Evo! 😉
@@maperformance Oh C'mon guys...EVERYONE knows that the EVO X isn't a true Evo! lol. What I meant to say was every Evo made prior to and including the EVO 8/9.

ive found that crankwalk typically happens only after a balance shaft failure due to poor maintenance and low oil pressure there at sustained high rpms. its the auxiliary shaft that looses oil pressure and the bearing fails, sending shavings to the crank and destroying the thrust washers. ive been working with these cars since 2009. a balance shaft delete and a kiggly oil pressure regulator are the fix. this is on 94+ 7 bolts that have separate thrust washers from the main bearing. 93 7 bolts have same type of setup as 6 bolt

I was my biggest problem with my last DSM. The car itself was fine when it had everything I could afford. Didn't have enough money for what I was trying to do. MAPerformance doesn't have too many parts for DSMs anymore. Can you broker car purchase deals?? Still need to do basic maintenance on these things too.
I'm realizing th gem I found, I just picked up a 1g 1992 eclipse gs manual with the only things wrong is rotors, windshield, and intake, got me home which was a hour away, oh and I paid 1000
I'm so sick of maintaining my bone stock Talon. $15k thrown on repairs and maintenance... now it's leaking transmission oil from the rear main seal for the second time. Also recently got the fuel injectors cleaned, but age is starting to show and it's causing the car to stall occasionally. It's the ESI but I want to convert it to the TSI AWD so freaking badly.
Fb marketplace. Most will be bagged, be picky and spend more for a quality car. These are on the up and getting pricey, expect to pay 10k minimum for something decent to start with
hey I love your videos , it was my project but everything in life changes so I still have it 1995 eagle talon tsi awd I'm the first and only owner what can I do to it?
Dude, CERTAIN parts are available, but things like door seals and fog lights are becoming much harder to find. I think you down played parts beyond the drivetrain.
We were focused on performance parts in this video, but like any other 90's car trim pieces, plastics, etc. are getting harder to find due to less of these cars being on the road.
The most unreliable part of these cars are the owners. They do take some decent knowledge of how cars are supposed to operate and not be "bandaided" into "working". Some people *cough Honda people* are cheap and find cheap parts to put on. That's a no no. You think ebay turbos, Chinese fuel regulators, sensitive electronics like WB, IAT sensors etc you can buy at autozone you are a problem. Be about it. Stop being a peasant and learn to spend the money to but it right not twice. Good parts ain't cheap. Cheap parts aren't good.
It's hard to even find trashed ones these days either. It's like most of the entire line was destroyed. It's almost like GSXs have become rarer than supercars.
I was thinking of Engine Swapping a 2G Eclipse with an M139 Engine from Benz and pump it up to like nearly 600 HP, and I went to 4chan and ask some things about it, a user said that the Diff. of a stock GSX (4WD) can't support it. Is there an aftermarket Diff for a 2G Eclipse?
Who don't got a homie that has or hasn't had one? None. My homie keeps his 1g awd 90 talon clean cause it's reliable. That 3g was stylized right and some fun til the governor kicks in but not as fun as a 2g.
Bro the first gen GSX gets no love cause the 2g had all the looks and interior refinements given the time and cost.. But I remember back in like 1996ish just after the 2g came out there was a 1g gsx running 1.9 to 60mph.. Let’s be honest though.. that 4g64 platform is solid. You can boost it to hell and back or modify the top end and get it to rev to 12k lol.. Thing is the least loved and best car from back then was the vr4 galant.. we talking a 2300 lb 4 door looking like the old Sentra with the same drivetrain.. the fears were too short though.. mine topped out at 146mph.. the wrist thing they ever did though was make the gst version for 2g cars.. the torque steer was stupid.. bad as the fast and the furious was that first race actually did depict the torque steer of the gsx pretty well.. On another note. They set the bar for modern day awd super care with the torque split they had.. at the time and for some years latter all other awd cars were 50/50 or 40/60 while Mitsubishi was 20/80 (maybe 30/70 can’t remember exactly) but they were rwd biased with a little front wheel assistance.
Idk about the Evo's, but I know for certain the DSM's are all a 50/50 torque split....pretty sure the Galant is too....3kvr4 has a 55/45 rear bias. The Nissan GTR's had something like a 70/30 rear bias split, and are the earliest cars I know of to have a split that far biased to the rear.
Or I can turn the dsm into a Honda the 4g63T yeah it can make crazy power but it still has its problems even still it’s still more reliable then the ej20/ej25 even still just to be safe should Honda b series swap it or a h series swap,k series swap for a more reliable experience
We definitely agree! There's a lot of praise in this video, but we also wanted to highlight some issues. We know these cars as much as anyone and they have some drawbacks!

I have the 03 galant es bought it with the 4g64 sohc but just wish I could put the 4g63 back in would love to make it a mid 10s car but sadly that dream will never happen
I own a 350 wheel hp 2g no issues besides routine maintenance
Could you make a 3g eclipse video?
500whp combo grocerie list
FP turbo
~1000cc injectors
250lph pump
Fmic
Tune
crank walk tends to happen when people don't keep up with oil changes cause it wears the bearings faster
Nope. Its thrust washer wear usually from a improper rebuild or a heavy single disc clutch. Had my talon for 22 years
Lol definitely true the more hp the more maintenance but when these things are running good they make killer passes!
I ordered some stuff from you guys not long ago. Im building a 4g64/63 head engine that is swapped into my 3000gt. The pistons look amazing thanks again!
ive had my built 97 gsx for about 10 months now. been down just a couple of times, but it hasn't been that bad yet! lol
1g gsx here, Dsm ftw
Just traded my ls400 for a 97 gst spyder 5 speed big excited really o ly want like 390 wheeel
Nice! Got the 96. What upgrades are you planning on doing?
I was my biggest problem with my last DSM. The car itself was fine when it had everything I could afford. Didn't have enough money for what I was trying to do. MAPerformance doesn't have too many parts for DSMs anymore. Can you broker car purchase deals??
Still need to do basic maintenance on these things too.
I'm realizing th gem I found, I just picked up a 1g 1992 eclipse gs manual with the only things wrong is rotors, windshield, and intake, got me home which was a hour away, oh and I paid 1000
The deals are still out there!
I want one and I can’t find one to buy might have to go far out of state lol
I think an FMIC and bigger turbo is kinda needed for 500hp as well lol
Lmfao did you casually just throw in "crip walking, but with 2g's" and hardly even crack a smile. Lol legend.
I love the 2g Eclipse
Curious as to what happened to the 4g powered rx7 you all had years ago?
I'm so sick of maintaining my bone stock Talon. $15k thrown on repairs and maintenance... now it's leaking transmission oil from the rear main seal for the second time. Also recently got the fuel injectors cleaned, but age is starting to show and it's causing the car to stall occasionally. It's the ESI but I want to convert it to the TSI AWD so freaking badly.
I'm still looking for a GSX. No luck. Any website recommendations?
Same here
Fb marketplace.
I still own my 1990 eagle talon TSI all stock fast enough for me
I got some map parts on my 2g and she running 15 to20 psi stock block 200k and she my daily
You left out the 420a... block was designed better than the 4g no crank walk. Designed by lotus.
I want to import a shell to Australia.....
I daily my gs all day long would love to find a clean gsx but like you mentioned lil to expensive
Also considering selling the 600hp 91 talon
How much is it auto
Dude, CERTAIN parts are available, but things like door seals and fog lights are becoming much harder to find. I think you down played parts beyond the drivetrain.
We were focused on performance parts in this video, but like any other 90's car trim pieces, plastics, etc. are getting harder to find due to less of these cars being on the road.
if you got a built motor making 400hp what kind of reliability do you got if your not drag racing and mostly babing the car?
The most unreliable part of these cars are the owners. They do take some decent knowledge of how cars are supposed to operate and not be "bandaided" into "working". Some people *cough Honda people* are cheap and find cheap parts to put on. That's a no no. You think ebay turbos, Chinese fuel regulators, sensitive electronics like WB, IAT sensors etc you can buy at autozone you are a problem. Be about it. Stop being a peasant and learn to spend the money to but it right not twice. Good parts ain't cheap. Cheap parts aren't good.
Just bought my 99 gsx hatch for 3k and put 6k into it to get it started. Just needs a tune
Making progress! Keep it up!
So hard to find decent ones that weren't riced/trashed to death nowadays
It's hard to even find trashed ones these days either. It's like most of the entire line was destroyed. It's almost like GSXs have become rarer than supercars.
Crank walk Do you see it in the pulley ?
Glass transmissions was missed
Idk so far my gst stock 5 speed is still holding up.
More please
Hard to find AWD Trans parts these days though :(
I was thinking of Engine Swapping a 2G Eclipse with an M139 Engine from Benz and pump it up to like nearly 600 HP, and I went to 4chan and ask some things about it, a user said that the Diff. of a stock GSX (4WD) can't support it. Is there an aftermarket Diff for a 2G Eclipse?
Quaiffe
TRE builds legend gear boxes for us.
Never selling my 98’ awd tsi auto in white 😎
Make sure it has a 4g63 is step one
i got a stock 420a, looking to get 180 stock and looking to turbo it to 230 to 250, gonna be bitchin if i dindt buy the wrong engine.
I miss my 1g with pop ups true first gen! Stupid Prius head on crashed into me totalled it out 😭😭😭😭
Under rated? Only among people that don’t actually go to track regularly.
Most people, even car enthusiasts, have never been to a track!
thpught i got me a keeper, blown enginge... im sad and idk if the replacement engine i got is the right one.
Uh the 🔻 fuel button and the ➕ boost button is what makes hp and blows shit up
Who's got a 91-94 turbo ecu they want to let go to get my car up and running again?? Brad Gary, I own your old 91
Or I can turn the dsm into a Honda the 4g63T yeah it can make crazy power but it still has its problems even still it’s still more reliable then the ej20/ej25 even still just to be safe should Honda b series swap it or a h series swap,k series swap for a more reliable experience
Stock GSX still exist?
Crankwalk only happens with the stick
more so than ever.
This video should be struck from UA-cam. They are still, after 30yrs, one of the most respected platforms out there.
We definitely agree! There's a lot of praise in this video, but we also wanted to highlight some issues. We know these cars as much as anyone and they have some drawbacks!
Chrysler did not make the 4g63 they made the 420A that came in the Gs and Rs.
I got one for 1000 and it runs
ITS a devil streets bro.cool stuff.so eclipes.
