Today I visit the historic Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. The famous gravesites in this cemetery tell stories of both triumph and tragedy.
Gravesite tours and remembrances include:
Cotton and slave trader, Wade Hampton Bolton gravesite
Robert Reed Church, the first black (African American) millionaire in the south's gravesite
Robert Reed Church Jr, Memphis businessman and politician's gravesite
Memphis Mayor E.H. Crump gravesite
Gov. Isham Green Harris gravesite
Benjamin Hooks, Civil Rights Leader and former executive director of the NAACP's gravesite
The Sultana Steamboat Memorial to the victims of the sunken Mississippi river passenger steamer
The Tennessee Children's Home Society Memorial to the victims of the black market adoption ring run by Memphis Operator Georgia Tann
I also remember:
Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Lorraine Motel, where he was assassinated in 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee
Mary Church Terrell, one of the founding members of the NAACP (Nation Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People)
Thanks for joining me on another nostalgic road trip down memory lane to the cemetery.

What an absolutely fascinating glimpse into history. You find the most amazing people to tell us about. I was particularly touched by your emotion about the assassination of Martin Luther King and your caring about the first black millionaire, Robert Church Magic!
thanks, avril.
I agree. To think the first black millionaire in the South would be ignored in any forum is just plain madness. We all know what color a person like Donald Trump burped up as a baby and the true achievement of a Black man in the toughest times in the United States rose up to become a millionaire, then no one hears about it is truly knocking me out of my chair and on the floor. (sort of) Speechless.
The beautiful souls that are long gone thank you Steve. You give them the recognition that they deserve.
This is a beautiful cemetery with so much history, never get tired of learning, and you do such a great job.
thanks, paulette!
Oh my gosh! Awesome cemetary and awesome vlog. I could have listened another hour! This is one of my favorites. I love history and this was a homerun. Thank you so much. Arlington is another place to give you goosebumps.
so glad you liked it kathleen. i love these types of vlogs, too, but most of my viewers only like the tv related vlogs. i'm guessing this will get very few views, but i still wanted to share it. a trip back to arlington is definitely on my bucket list!
Trains and cemeteries, my two favorites.
lol, i know. me too :-)
Raymond Makul I love trains and cemeteries too!! And walks by the river
Great video! Thanks so much for this video about Mr. Church!
@@TheGraveyardChannel àaàà
When I was growing up, and in bed ready for sleep, one could hear the trains off in the distance blowing their horn.
Very calming, very soothing.
Only you could combine railfanning and a historical graveyard tour!
Very nice!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
lol, i think i noticed a graveyard next to the caboose in your last viog :-)
Visiting Gravesites With Steve Irony is with us!
Thank you Steve for this stroll through Elmwood... and for the very interesting historical information!
thanks for coming along, LRW!
Thank you Steve!! I love history! Documentaries and Black history, gravesites history. This vlog has it all including trains, I love trains.I have taught history and never heard of Mr. Church. I appreciate your support in making Black Americans a part of your gravesites visits, especially the lesser known, or Celebrated. Thank you Steve for a job well done.
thanks, stephanie. cemeteries are my favorite way of learning about history. i learn so much that i never learned in school. i'm surprised that schools don't take students to visit cemeteries more often, if ever.
Thank you ever so much, Steve. For showing even more black history figures in a positive light. Many schools didn't teach black history. I have to learn it on my own. Thank you very much.
i know. it's shocking how so much history of all minorities just gets left out or erased in schools. thankfully, youtube, google and social media is changing all of that. thanks for watching, deneen!
Visiting Gravesites With Steve hay if I have images or videos can I send it to you
Thanks Steve, beautiful cemetery and interesting histories. I don't know why but I was surprised by seeing Lorraine Motel looking exactly the same as it did when Mr King was assasinated. I thought it would be long gone.
i think they were going to tear it down years ago, but thankfully it was purchased and is now the national civil rights museum. i should have mentioned that. they've preserved it beautifully.
@@TheGraveyardChannel Oh, did not know that, good!
Wow! Your creative juices were flowing when you made this video. Extensively researched with both success stories and tragic stories. Indeed, the scenery is very beautiful. It is a shame that cemeteries in So. Cal. like Forest Lawn do not allow for raised tombstones and private mausoleums. You are blessed to visit the Lorraine Motel in person. Thank you so much for sharing.
i agree. the cemeteries back east are so much more interesting. part of it is the age and history, though. this cemetery and the lorraine were both very moving visits, to say the least. thanks, PC!
This is one of my favorite cemeteries. I love the gothic feel to the victorian graves. Sometimes families will maintain the graves on findagrave to keep the information correct or keep it from being changed. Once it becomes famous findagrave has permanent control over it and it can be inaccurate. I run into that quite a bit.
i hadn't thought about that, but that makes sense and is a good reason not to be labeled famous. wish i had spent more time there. turns out i missed other very interesting gravesites there. thanks, rhetty!
@@TheGraveyardChannel There are a ton in that cemetery. Sarah and I have been there many times and the history never seems to end. I love the beauty there and the fall time is the best time to visit there. Many of the street names and parks are names after people in that cemetery. Lot of history in Memphis. When you do your video on the hotel. Pay special attention to the room number. It changed on the door for some reason while it was being inhabited. I don't know if it's changed but the door was a completely different number. It's like they took all the numbers off the doors in a remodel and forgot the number of the door on the room Martin was in. It will be neat to point out that difference.
Great vid like always Steve , your like a history teacher. I hated history at school but i could listen to your vids all day....THANK U .
that's really nice to hear. thanks, turok!
So much fascinating history in this beautiful cemetery! Another great video Steve.
and i didn't even have time to see it all. thanks, sue!
I love Elmwood! Not only is it a beautiful 80-acre _outdoor museum,_ but it's also an official bird sanctuary and arboretum! 🤓
i didn't know that. thanks for sharing this with us Lu!
Love the train sounds I live near tracks so IAM quite used to them great interesting video ✌️👍💕
i know. there's something about a train whistle that just takes you back. thanks, karoline!
Hi Steve WOW so interesting I liked that cemetery ALOT (the style of graves, the greenery, the history, the residents, the bridge, the train that passes) Thanks for taking us with you, great vlog. 😊
it was definitely a memorable cemetery. thanks, as always, for joining me, bianca!
I was aware of the maritime disaster & the baby snatching. However haven’t thought about them in a while. Interesting to see those final resting places. 💐
Oh wow, all sorts of history in this vlog! Love it Steve! Keep up the great work. The Sultana disaster has me more interested. I’m going to Google more info. I never heard of it, or I was absent that day in school when it was taught, lol.
i know, i was surprised that i had never heard about it either. thanks, amy!
wonderful video my friend.peace.
thank, kimberly!
Super excellent video Steve. You are special , anyone who could put a smile on people’s faces in a cemetery is certainly special. Love your insight.
learning new things at cemeteries and gravesites always puts a smile on my face, so i'm glad i can pass it on. why should they only be places of sadness? thanks, elliott!
Visiting Gravesites With Steve you are the best
You are right, it is a beautiful cemetery!
That was funny when you said " its a lively cemetery" 😁
Sad about the children.
The black millionaire, his relatives should be so proud.
I learn so much watching you're channel.You are such a kind person.❤
i'm glad to hear that. i always learn a lot from my visits, too :-) thanks, R!
Steve, I must say, you have a very interesting channel. Glad I found it. You always have interesting facts about the people who's graves you are taking us to. Some people think its creepy to visit grave yards. I live in a rural town in Ohio and I build my home right next door to the local cemetery. I love walking through it and wondering about the people's lives that were lived. Some think I'm crazy for building next to a graveyard, but I've got the quietest neighbors in town.....and they never talk back. Haha Thanks for your channel!
lol, i can't think of a better place to live. every grave tells an interesting story of someone's life. how could visiting and remembering them ever be creepy. just the opposite, i think. i guess the people who find it creepy haven't really thought about it in that way. glad you found my channel, too, COH!
Wow, what a gorgeous cemetery! You almost want to live there, lol. I loved the train and other sounds. I could almost feel the breeze on my face. The cemetery art and mausoleums were so beautiful too. The best part was all the history....I love history. Some of the stories are sad but the inspiring stories are the memorable ones you take with you. This was different from your other vlogs but so enjoyable. Thank you Steve for visiting this most historical and lovely resting place.
very beautifully said, pamela. i'm glad you enjoyed it too!
Wow I love the statues. We just don't have that here in Oregon. What wonderful art. Ty for the adventure loved it!!!
same here in california. the gravesites and memorials are much more interesting back east. thanks, lisa!
Another super informative video Steve - it's like having my very own personal history teacher LOL. Love your videos, thanks again :) ~Karin~
lol, i'm glad you liked it, Karin! and i almost became a teacher, so that's a real compliment.
WOW how about that :D Well I think you would have made a great teacher. I hated history at school, but now that I am older, I find different things a lot more interesting, weird how that happens :) Keep up the great work ~Karin~
Another Great show,Steve.
I enjoy learning about history and more importantly, little known history such as this.
The Train running through the back of the grave Yard was a real bonus.
Sorta brings to life the Hobo adage of catching the "Westbound" train which indicated the Bo has gone on to his reward.
Thanks again and Happy Rails!
omg, i didn't know what that phrase meant. maybe that's why i love seeing trains running through cemeteries so much :-) it's surprising how many do. thanks for sharing this with us HR!
Hi Steve! Great video my friend! I hope to visit there one day! Thanks for sharing!👍😁
Thank you Steve I love learning about peoples history we are in the middle of storm Brendon at the moment so lots of wind and rain here in the UK
be safe wendy. hope it blows over soon!

thanks, matthew!
Thank you Steve.
Hey Steve Thanks for this post.. Keep them coming. Joanne 🤗❤
thanks, joanne!
What a great video! That cemetery is absolutely gorgeous, looks so peaceful. Your videos are always so interesting and entertaining, and you are just a born presenter and narrator. Wow! As a Southerner, how did I never know about Georgia Tann and her awful crimes? I always learn something useful from your videos, Steve, so, after the video, going to look her up...Another great time spent with you and your videos...
so glad you liked it, LO. i always learn something on these visits, too!
Steve; you hit a home run with this one!!
thanks, robby. i especially enjoyed this visit.
Well done Steve, thanks for the tour!
thanks, GCAB!
Just awesome!
Wow so very cool!!!! Heyheyhey Steve!!!💙💙❤❤
Just a beautiful cemetery
Thank you for another great tour Steve.
thanks, chris!
Love all the history and info you provide...great video!👍
thanks, carmen!
Great vid Steve, very interesting and I like train horns in the distance. And the music in the background adds a nice touch. If your ever in Chicago check out Graceland cemetery, it's has some famous people like Jack Johnson the first black heavy weight champion. And Skokie Memorial has Robert Reed the dad on the Brady Bunch.
it's definitely on my list for the future. thanks, phil!
How did I miss this! Interesting video!Thank you Steve!
glad you found it :-)
Thank you
Hi, Steve! Thank you for doing something different, as I learned alot!
most of my viewers only like my tv related cemetery vlogs, but i still wanted to share this one, even if few viewers watched. glad you liked it, Al!

glad to hear it, sandra!
Awesome historical tour. Loved it!
glad to hear it. thanks, ty!
Another great video Steve, thanks so much:) 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Another interesting and informative vlog Steve.I lived in that part of the country for a while. Its amazing how they treat death. like I noticed if a funeral procession was travelling in the opposite direction you were the cars going you direction would stop too. Never saw that on the west coast. Also, whenever a MAJOR holiday was upcoming, grocery stores would have cemetery decorations displayed like on valentines day, etc. never saw that on the west coast either. Anyway, cool vlog, thanks again.
wow, that's so interesting to hear, karen. i've never heard of either of those things. especially cemetery decorations :-)
@@TheGraveyardChannel thought you'd enjoy that. surprised me.
That was awesome Steve, I love all the history in this one, beautiful cemetery, Tennessee is a beautiful state, what I've seen of it, drove thru it a few times, thanks Steve, that was a real fun one!! Be safe out there my friend!

Robert Church is definitely a trail blazer. Also, can you try finding the graves of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King, Medgar Evers, Ralph Abernathy, Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby, James Earl Ray, Lyndon baines Johnson, Frank Rosenthal, Lady Bird Johnson, Buford Pusser, John connally, and Edward R. Murrow?
wow, that's quite a list you have there. yes, they are all on my bucket list. thanks for the suggestions, joshua!

thanks, les. i hope you are doing well my friend!
@@TheGraveyardChannel Thanks Steve, I'm doing good, still having to use a walker for long distance walking, but my legs are improving, just taken a little longer than I expected.
I just got home after having a morning breakfast at the Masonic Lodge, when I seen your video and I had a great visit with Roy Clark II and his mother Barbara at the breakfast and we all sit at the same table. Roy II is a musician too, takes after his father and you sure can see the father and son as one person in person and could mistake one for the other unless you really knew each of them and their age.
Thanks for asking about my health too, means a lot coming from you, my friend!
Very interesting thank you Steve :)
thanks, pete!
Loved your vlog!
thanks, bonnie!
Some great history Steve …. thanks !!
thanks, brian!
Very nice steve & jim
Thank you Steve, good lesson in history those poor children, enjoyed the loco footage :)
thanks, wendy!
Thank you for sharing steve very sad story's very interesting stay safe out there.
thanks, olivia!
I enjoy your video's please keep posting more.
thanks, christopher. i plan to.
I'm going to have to do some more research on Robert Church because it was my understanding that Warren C. Coleman was the first black millionaire. Maybe just the first in NC. Thanks for another great video. Part of me now wants to start up again. The other part doesn't have the time or finances to do all I want to do lol.
i have noticed that facts online can be very contradictory at times. thanks for sharing this with us, fritz!
The Tennessee Childrens memorial reminds me of the garden of angels in Calimesa, California.
i drive by this cemetery all the time, but didn't know anything about this. i'll stop by the next time i'm passing by. thanks for letting me know about this, keith!
You got it.
I love history . That so amazing to think that he was the first black millionaire . He must have felt well Accomplished . And he was . He should be listed as a famous person . Wow and a slave . He really needs to be recognized .
i agree. thanks, george!
you do a great job giving us a tour of beautiful graveyards. There is an unmarked graveyard in Fort Mill SC that I would like to know more about. It is said to have souldiers and slaves buried there. I took pictures of the overgrown area. Some stones are readable but some is marked with just a stone.
Thanks for sharing these bits of history. I believe there was a TV movie made about Georgia Tan starring Mary Tyler Moore.
wow, i knew there were a couple of movies. i didn't mary was in one of them. thanks, carolyn!
Interesting graves. Thanks Steve.👋🙂🎆
thanks, lora!
Hi ya steve, I got the notification earlier but decided to wait till just before going to bed a friend of mine who live in Memphis been after me to come down and walk in that cemetary.guess I will now. Didn't know it was that close to motel.i wonder if they would rent that room out?now I'm going be called weird as well as strange..that train sure was loud.kind catch you off guard. I'll be sure when I go back Memphis I'll arrange with my friend to visit cemetary. Thanks for a nother good volg. I learn a lot from you.👍🙂👋.afa neita.
the hotel is now the national civil rights museum. the train is even louder in person. i'm sure you will enjoy your visit. it's sure an interesting place. thanks, neita!
Thank you Steve... :)
Steve....The Sultana disaster killed more people than the Titanic disaster. The victims were survivors of prisoner of war camps. From what I have read bodies were found everywhere along the river. How sad. Again you have given us another great history lesson. Best to Jim.
how awful it must have been at the time. i don't remember ever hearing of it before. glad i found the memorial. thanks, norma!
Nice history lesson Steve!! You should visit B.B King, and Chuck berry gravesites. Love your vids. ,,🤩♥️
would love to. thanks, chamique!
I was just in "Find a Grave" website and I found Robert Reed Church, year of death 1912...no other info needed. His bio came right up along with a pic of this mausoleum and his home in Memphis.
is he now listed under famous graves, though? if you go to findagrave.com and locate the cemetery, they list the famous people buried in each one. he was not listed as famous in elmwood a week or so ago. thanks, jaybees!
Well Steve you certainly provided me with a lot of information that I never knew anything about. It's wonderful learning more about the various aspects of American history and as usual you do such a great job. Thanks again Steve have a good trip and see you later! Is it safe to say that Christina and Christopher Crawford were part of that whole kidnapping ring? How sad for all of those families.
i learn so much from these visits, too. and i think you are correct. very sad. thanks, alexander!
Great Vlog. I remember reading about the first black woman millionaire also. With all the history there, you could have spent more time. I was wondering what all was there in in for the War of 1812 monument.
“ We should be Judged by our character, not the color of our skin,”. A Powerful, Positive, lesson provided by MLK, whose Holiday is
In another week. It is sad the last president could have quoted his words more often, instead of the quran, pushing the opposite narrative. Makes one wonder. His (MLK)history and endeavors, I look forward to when you do that later vlog. I will rewatch this vlog, when my cat stops yakking at me to get up. Thank you Steve, and yes, it was fun listening to your comments on the train. 😄
i could have spent all day there and still would have missed so much. it's an amazing place. thanks for sharing with us, shirley, even if your cat wasn't that interested :-)
Great vlog Steve 👍,very sad about the children I never knew about that story from here in the UK.
thanks got watching from the UK, george!
Wow those trains are real casket shakers! lol What an interesting cemetery ! That last statue was creepy but still beautifully done!
lol, that describes it pretty well :-)
Our cemetary in our town is located by an elemetary school with can be very noisy during recess. Our waste treatment plant is not far away either. But it is a quite beautiful spot which keeps having to add more plots. Lots of old markers and a few small mausoliums also big old markers and unique olds as well. Seeing i am in Canada i will get there and get a video of it.
i would love to see it. i love cemeteries with lots of activity all around. they seem more alive and not forgotten. thanks for sharing, pam!
such an amazing history lesson
As always Steve I enjoyed taking this tour with you thank you.In my home town of Savannah Ga. There's a cemetery called Bonaventure beautiful place Johnny Mercer is buried there if you ever get the chance please visit.
bonaventure has been on my bucket list for a long time. hopefully in the next year or so. thanks, angelina!
Hi Steve !! Fab vid again !!
thanks, claire!
Wow Steve hope Y'all are Great Love 💘 ❤ 💕 💗 💙 ♥
Thank you Steve for this wonderful video and history lesson. By the way, I live in Northern Mississippi (which is called the Mississippi Delta), less than 2 hours from Memphis. By the way, whenever you have a chance to travel again, you should visit the BB King Museum and his grave in Indianola, Mississippi. Elvis Presley’s childhood home is also here in Mississippi in Tupelo. And every year, in Clarksdale, Mississippi music greats come to the Annual Blues Festival. Here in Cleveland, Mississippi we have the Grammy Museum. Only two places in the world has the Grammy Museum - Los Angeles, CA and Cleveland, Mississippi 😊
thanks for the heads up, Crystal!
Great video! I love hearing the histories. When you come to Atlanta and visit MLK's gravesite I'd love to meet you. Thank you for all your hard work!
that would be great. if timing works out, maybe we can meet at his gravesite and you can be in the vlog. i don't know when it will be. hopefully i'll remember to announce it :-) thanks, anne!
That train made me jump!! LOL
lol, me too :-)
