Fixing a Jeep ABS / Traction Control / ESP BAS Light - Time for a Wheel Speed Sensor - Fault C100A

  • The Jeep decided that it needed some attention and turned on 4 warning indicators - Traction Control, ABS, ESP BAS, and the Service 4WD System message! Also, it won't let me turn on cruise control! That is a pretty big list of faults. Time to find out why! Follow along as I show how to fix this issue.
    This particular Jeep is a 2006 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.7 Liter V8, but it also works on the V6 model and many other years. You may need a different wheel speed sensor than the one I show here, but call your local car parts store and they can help you get the correct part.
    To diagnose this problem, I am using the "AlfaOBD" app paired with my OBDLink MX+ reader. You can find the "AlfaOBD" app in the play store (only available for android at this time), and you can find the OBDLink MX+ on Amazon.
    The AlfaOBD app indicuated a fault C100A which is a faulty left front wheel sensor. Since it did all the hard work of figuring out which sensor is bad for me, let's get a new one and get it installed!
    Thank you so much for watching. We really appreciate all of our viewers and subscribers!
    Reference:
    ABS - Antilock Braking System
    ESP - Electronic Stability Program
    BAS - Brake Assist System
    Note - your vehicle should only be serviced by a licensed repair facility or by the dealership.

    The same happened with my 2006, V8 4.7. And it was resolved by changing the abs sensor, as you explain in your video. I also had another problem, indicating "4wd system service", which I solved by simply removing the corresponding fuse, starting the engine, replacing the same fuse and restarting the engine. And the problem disappears. I believe that by doing this I applied a reset to this system. Thanks e Regards from Brazil.

      Terrific! I have also experienced the "Service 4WD System" error, and was able to resolve it by pulling a fuse. It was in this exact same Jeep! Been working great since though, so here's hoping it was just a fluke. Thanks for watching all the way in Brazil!

    Alpha OBD is so important to have if you want to do your own repairs. It told me which abs sensor was bad just the other day on my 06 WK GC. Ordered a new one for an easy fix by the look of it. How do you like your Wild traks? I used the Alpha OBD to adjust the speedo too when i put a set of 245/75R /17 Wild Traks on my GC. 31" tyres instead of stock 29" + Inch and a half lift too. Also tells me which glow plugs are faulty, Extremely helpful.

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  10 місяців тому

      AlphaOBD never ceases to surprise me. Had to replace a tire pressure sensor and after I did, the service tire pressure light came on. Forums say it has to go to a dealer to have the new sensor programmed into the SKIM. Fired up AlphaOBD, found the option, and programmed it in myself! Love it! Those tires have been EXCELLENT. They are a little aggressive so there is some tire noise, but they ride and wear really well. I liked them so much, I got another set for the wife's Commander. Very pleased. When they wear out, I'll be getting them again for sure! Thanks for watching!

    Hello. I had the same exact issue with my '08 Jeep Commander, replaced the wheel speed sensor, still lighting up just like yours. Thoughts?

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому

      Make sure you check the codes to find the exact cause of your issue. Mine said it was the front left sensor, but there are 3 other sensors it could be, or it may be a different problem that doesn't involve the wheel speed sensors at all. The ABS unit could be faulty, or you could have a broken/corroded wire or connection too. Definitely have someone run the ABS codes and go from there.

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому +1

      As long as the light goes out, you're good. If the light doesn't go out, it's still unhappy about something in that right rear wheel. If the light goes out but the code stays, you're fine. It'll just take a predetermined number of drive cycles for that old code to go away on its own. Some of them take as many as 50 drive cycles for the old codes to clear.

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому +1

      These wheel speed sensors should not put the vehicle in limp mode. I would highly recommend taking it to a shop and having the ABS system and TCM (transmission control module) scanned for codes before trying to put new parts on it. (Autozone and other chain scan tools can't scan the transmission or ABS computers) Hopefully something is amiss with the ABS that is telling your TCM to go to limp mode, but I would suspect an issue with the transmission which could disable the ABS system in limp mode. Sorry for the bad news. Best of luck to you!

      Yes, my speedometer did work. Sounds like you have a different sensor/sensors causing your issue. I believe there is a vehicle speed sensor on the transmission which would be tied to your speedometer. If that is faulty, it would probably throw all these same lights. I could be wrong, but that's where I would start.

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому

      Just the ESP light? It shouldn't have issues running with just the ESP light, as it is a completely separate module from the engine computer. Perhaps that is a byproduct of some other issue, or an additional issue. I'm suspecting your engine computer will show you some other issue. Alfa-OBD is your friend for troubleshooting. Just like the Check Engine Light, the ESP light could be on for many things. You'd have to run the diagnostics to know for sure. Sorry I can't be of more help.

    • @erickaerickson3080
      @erickaerickson3080 Рік тому +2

      You might be needing a wheel bearing , grinding noise can be a sign for that especially if it’s slipping cause one’s going faster than the others

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому +1

      I didn't, but it does happen. If the wheel speed sensor is reading a speed incorrectly, the ABS system will interpret that as wheel slip and will try to engage. This is typically more prevalent at very low speeds - like when you're almost to a complete stop.

    • @byronarriola4304
      @byronarriola4304 Рік тому +1

      Both of you were correct, I separated the CV axle from the wheel hub and the bearing was oozing grease that turned into almost hard candle wax texture. I replaced the hub and steering knuckle with a new bearing installed because it was cheap online. Also replaced the ABS sensor because something was rubbing on it. I reset the stored ABS code with a scanner that has ABS system accessibility and the problem went away.

      You need to replace transcase front and back axle, fluid with Synthetic- 4 fluid ( it's usually transmission fluid, or similar, oil, you have to do your own research, if your a diy)
      All AWD or 4x4 require flush and replace fluid every 30,000 miles. It takes 2 quarts per /f/b axle to fill transcase.

      If your ABS light is not on for this code, then this fix will not have any effect.
      Purely a guess, but perhaps there is an issue with the button assembly itself? I'm pretty sure those buttons all go on the CANBUS, so if there was a problem with the button assembly, a reset would get it working again. I could be wrong, but if it were mine, I'd probably start there. Hopefully you're able to get that resolved! I would find that problem very annoying!

    @chrischendio3632 Рік тому

    You didn't have to repair all of them. It's an electrical problem. Same thing happened to me when I replaced the alternator. Somehow the new alternator was bad. Drained the battery and all the lights came on at once. They couldn't all be bad at the same time.what are the odds they all fail simultaneously. Lol slim to none. And they weren't on before. Update just changed my alternator and now all 3 lights gone. Woohoo. Winning.

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Рік тому +2

      I'm glad you were able to fix yours with the alternator, but that was not the case for me. With low voltage, the ABS computer will go to a fault state, and all of those lights will come on, as they all depend on the ABS computer to function. In my case, however, the ABS computer was online, but could not see the front left wheel speed. Due to this, it must throw a code and go to a fault state, which illuminates the lights for all of those systems. Once I replaced the sensor, the ABS computer could see the left front wheel speed again, and came out of its fault state which re-enabled all the other systems and all the lights went out. 2 different solutions to 2 similar issues!
      Excellent pointer though, as voltage would be something to check before digging into wheel speed sensors. Thanks for sharing!

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  Місяць тому

      Thanks! I also like the screen. After replacing a wheel sensor, the vehicle must be moved for the ABS system to see the new sensor and clear the light. The tire sensors are just for your tire pressure monitoring system. That's a different light, and you'll get a message on your speedometer screen saying "Service Tire Pres System".

    I've got the same thing, the same three lights. Is it dangerous?

    • @3DayWeekend
      @3DayWeekend  5 місяців тому +1

      That's a tricky answer. Here it goes: It won't cause mechanical damage to the vehicle, however, several safety features of your Jeep are currently disabled. If you found yourself in a scenario that required emergency braking or a quick steering maneuver, your braking and stability assists would not engage which could result in an accident.
      ABS - your tires would lock up under full braking, resulting in a loss of steering.
      ESP/BAS (Electronic Stability Platform / Brake Assist System) - in an emergency steering scenario, the stability control would not function, which could allow the vehicle to fish-tail resulting in a loss of control or it could even flip over. BAS works with ABS to shorten your stopping distance.
      I would recommend fixing it as soon as possible from a safety standpoint, but mechanically no additional harm would be done to the vehicle by delaying the repair, provided the light is on for only a faulty wheel speed sensor.
      Hope that helps!

      Yes, the Jeep was still drivable with these warning lights, but obviously several of the safety systems were disabled so it is not recommended.

      Bummer! You may have a problem with the the plug itself or the wiring. I've seen where moisture has gotten into the plug and the pins are covered in corrosion or completely missing!

      I think the wording is wrong here on the video? Maybe not? So there’s a “speed sensor” and there a “ABS wheel speed sensor” I think you would want to replace the ABS wheel speed sensor but not 100% I just bought a car today and having the same issue but thought I clarify that for you.

    I just got this error... same wheel... reading the service manual it just says "remove sensor", great i think, easy!, but lacking details.... so i found your video and... the brake rotor has to come out?!?!,.. motherf jeep....

      @3DayWeekend  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the rotor does need to come off, but I've had other vehicles where the sensor is built into the hub and is not changeable, meaning you need to replace the hub just for a bad sensor. Fortunately this one is replaceable! I'm willing to call it a fair compromise! Thanks for watching!

      No need to test. C100A - front left wheel speed sensor. Swapped it out and problem solved! Had the light stayed on, more testing would have ensued, but it was good to go!

    Give the music a rest buddy....

      I definitely used a lot of music in my early videos, but I don't really use any at all these days. I've changed the way I edit videos so there isn't any "dead space" where I would feel obligated to use music. Always trying to improve. Thanks for the feedback!
