- While travelling through “unadministered territory” in Southeast Asia an Englishman is forced to spend the night at an abandoned and dilapidated jungle rest-house. However, his initial qualms about the place prove well-founded when the bungalow begins to replay its gruesome history.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Fear” by P.C. Wren (1944).

I hope you like this ghost story with a jungle setting. Content caution: some loud bumps in the night... Got some more stories coming up soon...maybe a bit of Benson, Walpole, all that good stuff 😊
Oooo goody! Shivering w spooky anticipation - I cannot wait! 👏
I look forward to the new story’s.I love that your acting ability is so great in a reading I visualize all the people, places and horror!it’s a great gift!
You hear it all the time, but you are truly awesome, Jasper L'Estrange ❤ I just listened to Simon Stanhope performing The Red Room, and now I can't help but think of a collaboration between you two. 😊 That would be superb.
GOD bless you and your family. I hope you are well and stay well.
It’s all good stuff ……..when the inimitable l’estrange is at the microphone 😊👍
@@waningmooncancer9628 We should do a team-up of all the plummy-voiced narrators together, maybe an anthology episode where we each have to share a story while trapped overnight at an abandoned ski lodge...
For the price of a movie ticket, I get a Jasper-narrated horror story- best bargain in town!!
Thanks for the Super Thanks, Terry! Much appreciated 🙏
Love this. Commenting as I listen. These 'old colonials' didn't leave as many stories as you would think. Mainly you have to go to Kipling of course. Especially for supernatural stuff....but whither you like it or not - it fits. They lived as people in our wild west. But it was east.
And it was deeply other and alien.
Thanks Jasper.
I've grown to have a hankering for Kipling. Golly, if you want to see a brutal portrayal of old colonials and By Jingoism in an unexpected place, the screenplays for the two Exorcis prequels are exquisite
@@bobbymarcum772 hello 👋 bobby! I would suggest "the mark of the beast" and "The return of Imrie" (probably spelt that wrong!). Surprising thing is...not just good - but how realistically flawed the Brits are portrayed - deeply flawed, tough, eccentric, vulnerable, deeply human, brutal...suspecting each other of having the D.Ts etc etc (we still do 😂). Also good horror stories.
Come and have a listen to some of my stuff on "the horror story corner". Stephen Sinclair playlist. Jasper gave me a nice shout out on this channels community page.
Oh i can't wait! Thx much ✌️
I don’t think this story would have half the impact it does if it wasn’t brilliantly well read, too. You’ve done each other real justice 😀♥️
Thanks Talia! It was a wonderful story to read.
Well kudos to Mr L for the American accent maintained for so long - really enhanced the Kiplingesque story. Respect.
Thank you Ramey! Once you commit to doing voices it becomes quite daunting when you realise it goes on for pages 😆
What a treat! I just got home and can enjoy the chills up and down my spine in peace! Thank you! 😊
You're welcome 😊
You are in a league of your own Jasper! This is a perfect example of the difference between reading words off a page and really telling a tale. The way you breathe life into a story totally immerses my minds eye and gives me the chills, not only because of the content, but because you are just so darn good! Your love of these tales and humor shines through in your perfect execution of them. Sorry to gush! But truly, you are just so awesome! 🤩
Let's Go.....!
I am feeling utterly spoiled by all these exceptional tales Jasper ... utterly spoiled!!! 💕
Glad you're enjoying them 😊
@@EnCryptedHorror I can't say this enough ... I'm just so so happy you are back Jasper!!!
Take my mind off my migraine, do!
Your work is always🐚🍄☠️👹
A perfect 🪷LOTUS🪷, élan.
Wow. The first half of this one really had me chilled and on edge. I realized I'd fallen asleep around the time he met the Reverend Doctor, and had to backtrack and finish the tale this morning. Immensely enjoyable, and - once again - I have to say your production details are incredible. Listening to your narrations is deeply immersive and engrossing, better than watching a film in a theater because the one in my mind is fine-tuned to my personal spooky triggers. Thank you so much! [and I appreciate that there is no scream recorded that could be used to illustrate the one heard in the story --- nothing like the one conjured by the horrified imagination of the reader/listener]
Dripping with dread and deliciously delivered! A story of two halves and I loved both of them. So glad you've chosen to get back in the game Jasper. 👌
Thanks Xadrum! 🙏
That was great, and such a fantastic accent, nice one guys.
Thank you!
Lovely stuff..
Goodnight EnCrypted Horror..
😴💤💤👌🏻..
Surpassed my expectations on this one. Really nailed some understated black humour in 1st part, and that 1st creak was perfectly timed.
Great stuff
Haha! Thanks Michael. I did properly time that creak. I love it when people notice the details 😁
Ooohh yess. Im saving this for tonight. Headphones in bed, a much awaited JL tale - perfect !
Nicely bone-chilling! Thanks so much for another first class narration Jasper, I wasn't familiar with this story and I was utterly gripped!
Thank you once again Jasper. You are truly talented.
Very very well done and extremely appreciated! Bravo!!!
Thank you Gina! Glad you enjoyed 😊
Beautifully done, makes finding myself awake at 4am a pleasure.
Ah, you too, eh? I have to admit I rather like waking at 3am or 4am, looking at the clock, realising I have another three or four hours in bed, finding something to listen to and drifting back off. It's waking up at 6am I can't stand...😮💨
Oh thank you! So glad you are reading again. 😵😵💫😱
I had forgotten how much I absolutely love your American accent 🖤✌️
I subscribe a few channels of a similar vein but yours is the one I anticipate and relish most, thank you for the memorable evenings you give me
Ahh, brilliance again from Jasper. I love the mood and location creation that comes across so vividly in his story telling. Another tour de force. Keep up the great work.
I laughed when leeches were considered particularly horrible, l completely agreed with that. 🌹
Haha! Yes, a few bits of this story made me laugh. I liked the description of the stew with its "alledged mushrooms" and I did enjoy the American missionary's deadpan "Needless to say, he wasn't an Englishman".
Awesome story and narration!
Imagine all that yelling!!
That was awesome! ❤❤❤
Very enjoyable. Thank you 😊
This was mesmerizing 👏👏👏
Thank you. Glad you liked it 🙏
Certainly this was a most enjoyable and excellent narration, Mr. L'Estrange.
I am so happy you're doing this again. I'm not talented as an actor or even a narrator, but I flatter myself in saying I can write, and I know when I see talent-- you have talent in scores of whatever unit talent is measured in. So from across the sea, this is just to encourage you to keep it up. I am no publicist, so I have no advice to give you on expanding your platform but rest assured, as one can often not be objectively honest concerning one's own talents, you stand head and shoulders above everything on youtube and elsewhere, and don't just mean voice-acting. Your original fiction Is very very, very GOOD. The Visiting Hours is one of my personal favorites, along with a Meeting of Minds. All your stories are so intricate, your characters well developed and knowable. Please keep it up. My whopping paycheck, if the banks last this long, will be on the 25th and I am surely joining your group of devotees and searching for merchandise, if you have any, to buy and wear and show off my impeccable good taste. Yours truly, Bobby Marcum, an Oklahoman and American hard-core Encrypted and Jasper Lestrange fan.
Thanks so much, Bobby. I did make a promise a while ago that I wouldn't follow other creators and start producing merch (I think UA-cam lets you start selling T-shirts when you get to 10k subs, or something). But I've also learned, when it comes to UA-cam, "never say never" 😄
Everyone else has already said everything I.would say and more. I second it all and then some Jasper❤
Ahaha, I was listening to the audiobook at night and almost fell asleep by 16:41... and then was surprised like the character. Truly immersive experience 😂
I've had people complain about the jump scares I sometimes put in, but I can't resist them 😉 Glad you saw the funny side 😄
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Thank You *Jasper* for your generous time in doing these for your listeners
You're very welcome 😊
Excellent dramatization as well, as always.
Yes, I DID thoroughly enjoy this tale! Also, it restated within me that I HAVEN'T LOST A THING in the Southeast Asian jungles, and I have no intention of doing so!
Thank you Jasper, this one really struck a chord with with me.
I found it so refreshing to hear a ghost story from a more recent time period, and so rich in language, and descriptions of the time and places visited.
A rare view of a world which has evaporated so very quickly into our modern times. You brought it back to us beautifully.
(I couldn't help a little shudder at the reference to Merbau timber though... let just say it has it's quirks as a flooring option... oh the horror!)
This story reminded me of Tim Winton's Cloud Street novel.
A couple of commonalities and time period I guess.
Loved it .
Thanks again.
Another masterpiece:3!
Thank you! Glad you liked it 🙏
Love the sound effects
WOW! Now that was a great one.
Hey @bourbonsteak thanks for the Super Thanks! Much appreciated 🙏
Great reading! I’ve noticed that in these videos the microphone audio sometimes sounds like mp3. From a production point of view, i wonder if the video compression you’re using when you export might be degrading the quality of the audio. Or if your recording setup is recording your voice to mp3 rather than .wav? Anyhow that’s a minor technical quibble. Overall very cool productions, with nice sound designs as well. Enjoying the readings, thanks for posting them!
Hi! I have a pretty basic set-up and, for reasons I won't bore you with, do the video editing part on my phone (which has limited memory). The original sound mix I do, trust me on this, sounds fantastic through a good set of headphones, even after saving as mp4. But then, to keep file sizes low, I'm not able to save the video at the max quality level, and then I have always found the audio quality is diminished even further during the UA-cam upload process.
Still, I'm a hobbyist with limited time and resources, so I've always hoped the audio quality isn't so detrimental to the overall listening experience. The recordings have, on the whole, got better, I think, since I first started, purely through trial and error.
Another issue I have is that I have no studio and record in a room with quite a lot of external noise (traffic and such outside) which means I have to apply quite heavy noise reduction to the base narration track.
So there's a summation of my pains! 😁
That intro already scared me 😮
That stew sounds de~licious & I caught the reference from *T Hardy* popular title/ line that one; it pops up here & there often
The stew *does* sound delicious. I liked "alledged mushrooms" and "unidentifiable odds and ends". Sounds a bit like something I order from my local Chinese restaurant 😊
@@EnCryptedHorror I have some mushrooms in my fridge right now that I will not eat b/c they look like fat grub worms. I didn't buy'em & I'm not eatin'em
Have had to restart 3 times...damn these interruptions. Sorry mr L'E
No worries. I remember what it was like to be popular...😁
@EnCryptedClassicHorror
Somewhat questionable modesty there sir. If judged solely from the reams of appreciation we, your fans, send you.
Great work as ever.
Ta for the reply.
A prayer for A’la Strange @ 19:00 to 19:19, “Ahhhhmmmmhhhhen”.
Nice 👌
Thank you 👍
Goddamn this is good stuff.
Thank you 🙏
❤ just the right vocal fry on the word NAY ❤
It's been a bit of an owl-themed autumn for me so far. At least the ones I can hear in real life are only owls, not ghosts, and are not dangerous to humans. I'm not so sure about the snakes.
Absolutely brilliant, from the Master of narrations.....my friend you are the best!! 😊
Thank you so much 🙏
this story reminds me of some thing i heard about on-line. a woman had a pet snake, some kind of constrictor, i think a boa. she used to let it stay in her bed with her when she went to sleep at night. she liked the feeling of it slithering around and on her body, which this snake would do as the woman lay in bed.
then one day the snake stopped eating. wouldn't eat any thing (presumably rats) that she would give it. so, growing concerned about the fact this animal was refusing food, she took it to the vet. that's when she found out that the snake was planning on eating _*her*_. it was refusing food so that it's stomach would be completely empty and able to accommodate the woman's body; and it was slithering around her body at night when it was in the bed with her as a way of measuring the woman's body to see if it would, in the words of captain hook, "fit inside it's skin."
upon hearing this, the woman promptly got rid of the snake.
❤
Is "coolies" considered an unpreferred term these days?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I guess you can believe in a monsterouse snake, and pretend that's how it happened!
