Thanks as always for listening, folks! As I said in the intro, HB was in its infancy when we first tackled Innsmouth -- I hope this new recording demonstrates some maturity. Of course, the 2016 recording will remain live on the channel. PS -- If you listen closely to the new version, you might just catch the characteristic chuckle of 2016 Zadok...!
With the advancement of both your skill and recording techniques, it only makes sense that you would like to rerecord some of your earlier work. I appreciate you deciding to leave up the original. Sometimes I prefer the original versions. For instance, your first recording of "The Statement of Randolph Carter" had a frantic quality to it. I really got the impression that he was being interrogated. You had a great pleading aspect to your tone. All that said, adding details like the pencil scratching paper or the train or just ambient music to a clearer cleaner recording is always appreciated. I've listened to hundreds of hours of this channel and I hope to get hundreds more in the future. Thank you very much Ian for your dedication to the material and calming my cats daily. I am forever grateful
Certainly the best version of this story I found so far! Some have good illustrations, some have multiple characters, but this has the best overall quality
This is hands down my favorite Lovecraft story. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve listened to your original Shadow Over Innsmouth video, it must be nearly 50 times. Your voice and tone ARE Lovecraft for me, whenever I read any Lovecraft story I always hear your voice in my inner monologue. Thank you for bringing my favorite author to life for so many years ❤
Ever impressed, that demonic fish people, somewhere between praising Cthulhu and summoning Shoggoths, managed to learn about the prohibition, made a conscious decision to circumvent it and supplied their town with bootleg liquor. Great job as always!
As you know, not all the people were fishpeople, so it makes sense that the homegrown fishpeople and the failed fishpeople and the foshpeople support familiea would still want to procure some prohibition-era illicit hooch to dull the existential pain of being a fishpeople who hasn't gone down yet.
What a treasure! 36:06 I love how "The Strange High House in the Mist" is identified on his way to Innsmouth. I do so love Zadok's tale. The background/environmental noise, sounds, and voices add an excellent touch. The change in the narrator's demeanor, by the use of tone, by the time the story ends is astounding.
Really brought Zadok to life in a way I'd never heard, and it's Zadok's story that so much brings it all together. Feeling now like that character has always been too subdued in so many other recordings I've listened to -and I must have even glossed over his part a lot long ago while reading it myself. Maybe the dialect in the writing obscured the reading somewhat till Ian perfected it and served it up nice.
@tamlandipper29 I read the story more than once before I picked up on it. It is easier for me to miss the reference while reading than while listening to a narration. Love your stories!
@ryanjohnson3615 agree. Zadok's story is such a pivotal part of this tale because it tells the background story. I really have to slow up my reading pace when I reach that part of the story. I applied my rural PA slang, and it helped me out (regional dialects are different, but there are some similar old-school words used). Ian's voicing of Zadok is absolutely incredible. I even laughed a couple of times when Zadok yelled.
I think Joe Sergeant was my bus driver last time I took the old Greyhound. Lol. I have to say I love both versions you and Jen did Ian. Hard to pick a favorite.
"It is a pity that people find our city weird and distribute certain rumors about us. The late H. P. Lovecraft had in deed some problems with some fishermen, not fishmen as many say, but this is not a reason to discredit our city. Committee for the Restoration of the City of Insmouth ". Thank you Ian.
I am totally adicted to HorrorBabble. I havent listened to any radio for months, Im tuned in to HorrorBabble audio 24 hours a day. Yes Ian is definately the best narrator on the web
“Your witness says he saw us at half past eleven on the Gainesville pike, headed for Big Cypress Swamp. This is probably true, but I have no distinct memory of it…..” I very much enjoyed this even though I last listened only yesterday to this tale of Dagon and those who would call the deep home. Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!
I adore these re-reads. Getting to hear how the channel has grown and all the different touches to these great stories. I'm sure it might just be me but I'd love to hear an updated version of the Randolph Carter series but I know it must be an absolute mountain of a project. Always great work Ian
Your original recording has been amongst my favorites for years. I’ve listened to it multiple times all through. It’s what brought me to pursue more of Lovecraft’s work in the first place. Genuinely, thank you. As for this recording, it’s greatly appreciated and absolutely fantastic.
Your an absolute Legend brother. Your Lovecraft readings make my day every time. Couldn't imagine a better voice for this stuff. Great production as always 💯👌
Nothing wrong with the formative years, Ian. Your synthesiser skills remain top notch! Thanks for putting this on a bank holiday, so plenty of us can have a relaxed listen. :)
Ian your arsenal of New England accents marks you as world class talent! Not just this recording but other stories too! Especially the ones set in Maine😊.
This story is an absolute classic and your reading of it makes it even better, I imagine if I actually read the story in a book I’d hear you narrating it in my head.
Thank you so much for this! Definitely one of my favorite HPL stories that I've both read and listened to many times on other platforms. Your reading easily tops all the others! It feels atmospheric and captures the spirit of the story. Bravo!
Easily one of the all time classics & my favorites. The videogame “Dark Corners of the Earth “ also captures the town & it’s denizens astonishingly accurate.
How did I miss this?! I loved your initial recording, it's my favorite Lovecraft story. Many thanks! It's just one of the classics that deserves several readings. Also, Lovecraft is part of the reason that I decided to live in New England❤
Your original recording of this was what introduced me to your work. I am really happy to see you revisiting these with the higher production value recordings you've recently been able to make
Can’t wait to listen to this later ! One of my favourite Lovecraft stories and one of the first I ever read, awesome to see such effort being put into these re recordings with all the additional music and sound effects too ! ❤
This is one of my favorites. Its the first story i listened to from this channel. I listen to it and At the Mountains of Madness, those are my go to every night almost. Thank you for your hard work and wonderful voice.
Wow Ian, your narration has always been great, but side by side with the other version of the Innsmouth tale shows how much your acting has improved. This is just fantastic, keep it up!
All my homies hate Innsmouth, strange people though they may be I sometimes find myself on the edge of town -- my body pointed towards that long oft reviled destination. I am losing my memories, though the homies say that I have never been more lively. I have lost hair, and apparently been taking it in stride. I bought a ticket, a purchase of which I have no recollection. I have apparently convinced the homies to ride along. I am at the gate -- looking at the bus that will take me there; to innsmouth. I feel serene. I am at home.
Wow! Excellent - so professional. Loved the unobtrusive sound effects which added to the feeling of the story. you both have certainly learned much and know how to use that experience. Really enjoyed this new version. Thanks much to both of you 🎭🌷🌱
You're kidding right? Your first reading was an absolute masterpiece. I have easily listened to you tell that story more than just about any other. If I fall asleep to this story any more times I'm gonna wake up a Deep One.
Update: I love the new recording, but I kind of also miss the original Zadok, that performance had a weird unbalanced kind of narration that seemed to fit the character for me after a while. Your newest narration is more mature I suppose but Zadok just doesn't have that same sort of conspiratorial, frenetic drunkard energy of the original. He just doesn't sound as crazy and drunk right off the bat, like he should. Still not complaining, just my impression after literally dozens of listens to the original. Have to admit I'm a bit of a HB addict at this point..
Thanks as always for listening, folks! As I said in the intro, HB was in its infancy when we first tackled Innsmouth -- I hope this new recording demonstrates some maturity. You made a good recording even better, thanks for taking the time to deliver!

This is awesome! Thanks for leaving the 2016 one up!
No such thing as too much Innsmouth!
Doing my duty to boost the algorithm for the best narrator on youtube.
Certainly the best version of this story I found so far! Some have good illustrations, some have multiple characters, but this has the best overall quality
Ditto
Most Definitely…🌻🌻🌻

"I don't know too much about Innsmouth, but let me talk to you about it for 10 uninterrupted minutes." -The Ticket Agent
He might not know much about it directly, but he has worked there for a while and knows things secondhand, and has made inferences, I'm sure.
I would disassociate.
Just imagine how long someone who knows would have talked.
You could talk about a place for 10 hours and still not know too much about it.

@@T1ddlywinks lol definitely ✌️ it’s hard to pick a favorite for me but I always come back to The Shadow Over Innsmouth ❤️
I haven't listened to much lovecraft but I have to agree this story deserves more attention
@@tooladdict85 You should check out "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" too!
My favorite also… close second would be Lumleys Lord of the worms. They’ve pretty much ruined me on other authors in this genre.

Well, fish and drinking go together. But, you'd think it would be a nice g & t.
You cannot prevent a sapient being from getting high.
There are gods of wine so of course they're not down with projibition
the economy needs to keep rolling
Why doesnt this narrator have more subscribers?! He is sooo awesome I love hearing his stories for lesiures. ❤❤❤

Perfect! It's going to be cold and rainy here all day so this works perfectly for afterwork listening.
Nice! I was just listening to the old recording...for like the millionth time. Im excited to hear the new and improved version
Definitely one of HPL's finest stories. It gets better every time I read it (and in this case, listen to it).

I do fancy tackling some of the latter Carter stories again -- the original recordings are getting a little long in the tooth.
@@HorrorBabble it's just such a good story, but also a good 6 ½ hours long lol

Probably Lovecraft’s most iconic story next to “The Call of Cthulhu”
Ian your arsenal of New England accents marks you as world class talent! Not just this recording but other stories too! Especially the ones set in Maine😊.
This one and In the Mountains of Madness are my all-time favorite stories from Lovecraft. Great Job! Stay blessed!
I love the story also. Glad you were able to record it again though the original is still excellent.

What an unexpected treat! Thanks, HB! 😎🔥👏
