I think we need to be picky when it comes to 4k releases because as much as we don't want to admit it this could be the final release of a lot of films.
Think about it, studios only pay for remasters when a new format comes out but UHD Blu-ray may never have a successor.
I mean who's really gonna invest in 8k Blu-Ray unless they own a 100"+ screen.
In the age of streaming, consumers aren't looking out for new releases, a new remaster isn't gonna create many sales in the digital age.
As long as it says 4k, HDR, Atmos on Prime video the distributors really don't care. And I'm not sure if anything new will be coming along that demands a total remaster.
So sadly the poor 4k releases we've seen may be the definitive versions for a lot of these movies, I don't know if we'll ever get to see T2 or Lotr as they originally were.
So absolutely nitpick each release to death so hopefully studios will be encouraged to try harder on their remaining remasters.

For the technical background, in 2010 Alien and Aliens were restored in 4K for the Alien Anthology Blu-ray box set by Lowry Digital. In 2019, a completely new 4K restoration of the theatrical version was created for the Ultra HD Blu-ray of Alien, the directors cut scenes are upscales of the 2010 restoration.
For Aliens, the 2010 restoration was used and additionally processed with AI tools. Peter Jackson's company Park Road was responsible for this. The AI tools cause artefacts, wax faces and the 35 mm film look gives way to a smooth and cheap digital video look. One should not make the mistake of assuming that the quality of the 2010 Blu-ray is the same as the quality of the 4K restoration at the time. After all, the 4K restoration was downscaled to HD and a lot has happened since then in terms of encoding and data rate.
If James Cameron really cared about quality, he would have either created a completely new 4K restoration or at least redone the post-production.
The point of a professional restoration is to recreate the original look and preserve it for future generations. What James Cameron is doing here, however, is the complete opposite, namely revisionism. And no, James Cameron does not have the right to change these films in this way. For one thing, Aliens belongs to 20th Century Studios, not James Cameron. Secondly, films are teamwork, what would the cinematographer Adrian Biddle say about these changes?
Years ago, James Cameron criticised George Lucas for the changes in the Star Wars Special Editions.

@@natalieportmanfan1817 George Lucas made so many mistakes, no he is not a great filmmaker or visionair anymore. The prequels looks cheap with all the CGI and digital camerawork. Even episode I which was shot on 35 mm looks cheap now with all the DNR applied.
And what James Cameron did with his old movies is not better, the Reliance Mediaworks 4K restorations would look so much better without the new color grading and the AI processing.

The Star Wars prequel is a pure masterpiece,.they are the best movies of all time, a great cult trilogy, exciting from start to finish, the best Star Wars trilogy, the greatest Star Wars trilogy, the richest, the most complete, the best period, everything is superb : the deepening of the Star Wars universe and its narrative elements are superb and exciting, and it explores in detail the Clone Wars period, a crucial moment in Star Wars history 🔥😍 a fundamental and exciting pivotal period 🔥💥🔥 the Clone Wars period is the best Star Wars period 🥳🥰🤗😍🔥💥👍
The fascinating plot that develops throughout the movies. The rise to power of Palpatine, Darth Sidious, is masterfully depicted 🥰 His behind-the-scenes shenanigans to undermine the Galactic Republic and bring the galaxy under his control are meticulously presented. His manipulation to form a huge clone army and eradicate the Jedi with Order 66 is a central element of the story, explaining how the Galactic Empire took shape following the fall of the Republic and how Anakin switched to the dark side of the force in order to become Darth Vader 🔥💖 a fallen hero who just wanted to save those he loved 💥🔥 Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader is a superb, memorable and breathtaking scene 😍💥 the link with the original trilogy is superbly done. Anakin's internal conflict between his loyalty to the Jedi order and his desire to save those he loves makes his story profound and tragic 🔥🔥 His turn to the dark side, with key moments such as his confrontation with Count Dooku and his heartbreaking final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar 💥🔥
The prequel also brought an invaluable richness to the Star Wars universe, a detailed insight into the Jedi order, Padawan training, the Sith, mastery of combat and Jedi teachings 💖💥🔥 The focus on the Sith and their philosophy reinforced the dark side of the Force, adding depth and complexity to the saga.

The expansion of the universe is also great. New planets, races, creatures, peoples and cultures are introduced, with dugs, gungans, toydarians, kaminoians, the aquatic city, the queen's palace, the galactic senate, the cloning factory, the gungans' aquatic city, the galactic senate, Naboo and Coruscant the best planets, helping to create a larger, more diverse world 💥🔥 Iconic locations such as Kamino, Geonosis, Utapau, Felucia and Mustafar provide visually captivating backdrops for action scenes, development and key plot moments 😍🥰💖💥 Cult and iconic characters, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn. Mace Windu, General Grievous, Jango Fett, Watto, Sebulba...❤️🔥🔥
The action scenes and lightsaber battles are among the saga's most memorable. Epic battles such as the Battle of Geonosis, the Pod Race on Tatooine, the Battle of Naboo and the Battle Over Coruscant are highly memorable and emblematic of the saga, they are not only visually impressive, superbly well-realized, but they are also emotionally charged, with characters we've grown to love in danger ❤️🔥
Lightsaber duels between iconic characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul and Yoda are executed with exceptional choreography, adding a visceral dimension to the story, the fight on Naboo, the confrontation with Count Dooku, the Senate summit duel between Yoda and Darth Sidious, the fight against Darth Maul and the fratricidal duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin.... 🔥🔥
The prequel also enriches the Star Wars lore with new charismatic and endearing characters, unforgettable music, "Duel of the Fates", "Across the Stars" ", Battle of the Heroes", a super-rich, exciting and very complete lore and a talented cast of actors, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. The color grading matching up 100% alone proves that it isn't a new scan- The "modern" color grade it got in 2010 wouldn't even be done in the same way that a 2024 regrade would - and they would have differences - Oh wow, you say this later in the video, you are the first person other than me who I have seen say this.

I wouldn't say it looks like a game at all. Is it perfect? No! However, the clothes, backgrounds, etc, are very rich in detail. The removal of film grain was a terrible idea. You can still keep film grain and enhance the movie. It has been shown time and time again with other releases. The Fugitive is a great example of how to restore film. The main issue is waxy skin tones and flesh detail. It's not as bad as T2. Sometimes, it comes down to what makeup was used at the time. Other movies will have greater detail like skin pores, scars, blackheads, etc however the movies that do show that level of detail you'll find that the Actors didn't use makeup. The Matrix is a great example for this as the detail on Laurence Fishburne's skin is highly detailed and he has openly stated numerous times that he refused to use makeup. There are many factors involved and Sometimes it's Just down to a poor transfer or the material that they used in the first place. A lot of people just state DNR all the time when they don't actually understand what they're trying to say. At the end of the day make your own mind up. For me I'm happy with it for now as it's a better watch than the excellent quadrilogy Blu Ray release. True Lies is probably the worst of the three releases, but True Lies is also the best it has looked as we only had DVD before. The unofficial blu ray release doesn't count, and that was also terrible. Sold it straight away. If you like it, then it's fine, if you don't like it, then that is also fine. It's your preference and your opinion that counts. If you have read all of this, then thank you, and sorry for wasting your time.

There's 35mm scans of both Aliens and True Lies floating around certain private torrent trackers, a few are that are faded, and the other's have had their color tweaked to (I believe) match the film's original production stills. I've seen both. These 4K blu rays are objectively the worst examples of digital tampering I've personally ever seen. Nothing about the glorious prints shown in theatres have been represented in the UHD transfer. The skin tones are unnaturally saturated, and the DNR so intense in some parts it makes the actors resemble CGI or AI generated human beings. Not exaggerating.
If you happen to love these movies the way they were in their original presentations; show your credit card some mercy and don't buy these discs. James Cameron has the best industry technology at finger tips and more than sufficient funds. In my opinion, The UHD format should be utilized to it's highest potential; that being theatrical preservation.
I think if Cameron despises celluloid THAT much, then fine, he has a right to tinker with his work all he likes, but not to the disdain of the consumer... The fans, the public... the people who made him filthy rich. I vouch for an alternative pressing as a bonus disc. Of course, that won't happen.

Just watched the new AI 4K version of Aliens and it looks fabulous. Apart from the scene of the launch ship looking more fake as it soars through the atmosphere, both coming and going (I think because these original shots were done with a low resolution model and were shot very dark originally), the rest of the movie has a new clarity that is OUTSTANDING. Many parts of the old versions were both too dark, blurry, and grainy and it was almost impossible to see all the details of many of the background sets, especially in the scenes in the Aliens' lair and in the cramped corridors during the lights out fight sequences.
Some people still love vinyl records and vaccum tube amplifiers - those people can only be described as deluded luddites.

I agree. Dont know why people love grain so much. On Aliens it was really intrusive. It was filmed on poor stock film, even Cameron moaned about it at the time! The grain is still in this version, its just not like a swarm of bees on the camera in every scene and you can now see more detail on everything. And it all matches, and it does not look like its been filmed at the bottom of the sea, with a camera lens covered in grease. At some point I am sure another version will come along as well...people are lucky to just have this available and the choice...

But I'm thankful that it's not a waxy or porcelain looking image that I was afraid it was going to be. The worst example of course was Terminator 2, and true lies. All James Cameron films have been restored in 4K by Lowry Digital and Reliance Mediaworks. Reliance Mediaworks once confirmed this in a Variety article. Nevertheless, they could have gone back to the 4K raw scans.
These new 4K edits have so many problems, in Abyss the colour grading is now significantly worse compared to the unreleased SDR grade.

Just because an Ai upscale was used doesn't mean the source wasn't 4k. It was, most later Blu-Rays were derived from 4k scans.
You can use Ai upscalers without actually changing resolution. The result is a lot like downsampling an 8k scan to 4k, so you get better detail at the same res.
It's a great technique, I use it all the time (especially on bad 4k releases) but it has it's limitations.
Mainly that AI can't handle film grain, it mistakes it for noise and wipes it out. The result is far better than previous grain reduction techniques as it recreates the missing detail but it's not perfect so you have to add artificial grain on top which is what happened here.
Hopefully there'll soon be ways to separate the grain layer from the clean image then add it back on after the upscale.
But until then this technique really shouldn't be used on film scans, you lose more than you gain imo.
Unless the intent is to remove grain in which case I'd far prefer the use of AI over previous methods, with those this could've easily ended up a T2 level disaster.

Now if they scanned from the original negative I still don't think it would look better than this UHD version. Aliens would look a lot like Predator and the original Alien. Movies that were shot more than thirty years ago. I really like this Aliens upgrade. I guess I'm a sucker for detail over a more organic look.

3:24 “…but remember that grain has never given sharpness.”
Not only is this factually incorrect, but it speaks volumes of your lack of knowledge of not just film restoration, but film production in general. Film grain isn’t dust or dirt that gradually finds its way onto celluloid as it ages, it’s the visible silver crystals in the negative’s emulsion, in which the halides change into pure metallic silver when it’s exposed to light, which is how an image is captured on all forms of film, whether on celluloid or digital. In short, the grain is an integral part of the film’s image, and removing it only removes detail from the image, hence why the Aliens and True Lies 4K transfers look like total dog crap.

    • @LELABODEJAY

OK, now I have a better idea of what is happening here without having seen the 4K yet, but you are more on the money than most criticizing the 4K disc. This is a horror film after all, so expecting clarity and fidelity is laughable. The point about the Canon lenses is 100% correct, with all due respect to the company, who makes some of the best cameras and lenses (even Super 8 movie cameras) around and both Biddle and Cameron knew what they were doing when they chose that lens and the like. Biddle is highly underrated. Now that I believe you have confirmed it is the same high def digital master files for the earlier Blu-ray, note that Cameron and company redid the whole film frame by frame because the two film stocks from Kodak, 5494 and 5295 were early attempts by the company to crate low fading color film after Martin Scorsese's successful lawsuit about color fading on ALL color films against them and in effect, even other color film producers in the world like Agfa and Fuji. However, those two 35mm color negatives had issues with fading, especially 5494, so it helped him to get some cheap film to keep costs down (hey only had over $18 Million when Lucas spent something like $100 Million each on the two STAR WARS sequels a few years before) and Kodak sold the film to him cheaply as they mutually knew about its visual and archival limits. That is why he did what he did in 2010 and it makes sense that he went back to those digital remastering because the negative was already in bad shape then. No way they were in good shape then and it is too horrific to think what condition they are in now. That also means the only version of the film, and the theatrical only at that, that represents the true original look of the film are the surviving 70mm blow-up prints STILL being screened worldwide. With all that, until I see the 4K in full Dolby Atmos/Vision mode from beginning to end, I can now see that in this case, Cameron's further saved the film and both the new sharpness, color range and vividness I have seen sampled are not only an attempt to make it look great, it is to make it look as good as it ever did in the 70mm blow-up prints. I'll deal with flaws and limits later, but the new included Blu-ray is just the updated 4K downscaled and as far as I can see, nothing looks upscaled from there 2010 redo master, but we'll see. Thanks for the excellent video, one fit best of many posted since this 4K arrived. Very happy to see so many fans who love this remarkable film, no matter what their take is on the new 4K.

The budget of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was not 100 million dollars but about 30 million dollars each.
I have never read about problems with fading in the film stock of Aliens, James Cameron stated in 2010 that the problem with the film stock was the extreme graininess.
What James Cameron did here has nothing to do with a professional restoration, it's just revisionism. The color grading alone has little to do with the look of the time. Cameron should have used answer prints and 70 mm blow-up prints as a grading reference back in 2010. Apart from that, incorrect color grading and the use of AI tools are a general problem that affects not only Aliens, but also The Abyss, True Lies and Titanic. T2 also has problems with incorrect color grading. Cameron wants to adapt his old films to the modern smooth digital look of his Avatar films.

    • @nicholassheffo5723
      @nicholassheffo5723 3 місяці тому

@@GhostRider-sp4uc I was talking adjusted on the STAR WARS sequels and Lucas himself said EMPIRE went 4 times over budget so $30 Million CANNOT be accurate in any way and I doubt JEDI was only $30 Million either. That is closer to what STAR WARS 1977 costs.. We can always look up- the specifics if need be. Grain might have been an issue, but they are both stocks known for fading and other issues, which is why he got them so cheap and the one was quickly discontinued. Don't know about TITANIC specifically, but T2 needs a new transfer and not the 3D one it used, while THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES have other issues I will get into some other time. Restoration matters and is relevant and I cannot disagree that revisionism has some degree of validity, though it does not effect the storyline, script or performances. I'll come up with more, especially when I FINALLY get that set and at least two UA-cam videos that show the actual 70mm blow-up prints are posted. You can get a look at the film there and see how it really looks at its best. Like the multi-version BLADE RUNNER Blu-ray, a scan of a 70mm blow-up would be a plus in a. future 4K release. Argument against that: the director decided what the film should look like in 1989 (or whenever) when Aliens originally came out. Sure, he can change his mind and decide it should look another way, but he shouldn't be allowed to say "the old version no longer exists". The "old" Aliens film still "exists" out there (granted, it may not be scanned/colour corrected, etc., but in some sense still exists) but all we can look at in any kind of high quality is this "new" version.

Reproducing the source material as close as possible is what DVD/Blu-ray and 4K producers have as their goal. If you decide to remove grain, you have no respect for the film. If a director does it, you can be sure that it's because of the processes needed, like in this case, to upscale the material and sharpen in. That would make the grain a lot more apparent. Still, if you can't look at film that retains its grain, the problem is with you, not the material. Just get used to it.

Because film grain is part of the image, it's part of what makes movies shot on film look the way they do. It's not the grain people love, it's what the grain represents.
