Basically the whole point of an AVGN Game being an 8-bit platformer is because the AVGN has rarely reviewed a game that was outside the N64 generation and almost always reviews an 8-bit game, so it would make sense...But gamers LOVE these hard as balls Retro Platformers being made in the current generation to the point that makes me ask this one very simple question "Are Gamers Masochistic?"
Your last answer is 'yes'.
Ardavan Farahvash
Pain is love. Love is life. What I'm saying is,beating yourself with a whip counts as masturbation...right?
The rocks were from my game.... Someone needs to work on a better one... Truly
Word of warning as well:
This game is short. Very short. You can probably beat it in about 2 hours.
EightThreeEight so is cuphead it’s the difficulty that artificially extends the game from being to short
1) You cannot resize the game at all while you're playing it, there are no resolution options.
2) Resizing the game in Premiere causes you to have to downscale every frame in the encoding process, resulting in a lengthier encoding time.
"Nerd rage humour that has been faked to make vast stacks of cash among squeling idiots" *cough cough* pewdiepie
I'm the same. I don't find all the toilet humour stuff funny in his videos but his reactions are gold.
you don't know how many times I've said ASS! at random times and my friends and I laugh our asses off!
I'm I the only one who find the art style they chose to be absolutely hideous? =/
This game had a really cool level made almost entirely of death blocks if i recall correctly.
Retro Platformers. Twice the market saturation of Military Shooters.
Ask anyone who loves James, and the AVGN, and they will endlessly spew out great moments. You say that you can't think of any great quotes or moments, because you weren't watching all his videos because you genuinely wanted to go and see the next one, you watched them because you felt basically obligated to due to his internet fame in a sense.
i think most of the things that were added to piss people off were deliberate
I get the reference to Pewdiepie, and I honestly can't fathom why that genetic dead en is so fucking popular. I've tried to watch his videos and inevitably close the tab in less than 5 minutes.Worse than Markiplier, if that's possible.
Also, Meat Boy better than this game? Are you fucking shitting me? Meat Boy is one of innumerable Flash games gone "mainstream'. It's "I Wanna Be The Guy" levels of fucking 14 year olds with a level designer that think it's cool to put the most amount of traps and pixel-perfect jumps and dodges in the space of a 800pixel space and a 1 hit kill dynamic. Meat boy is anything but fun, AVGN is frustrating but enjoyable.
Super Meat Boy was critically acclaimed as one of the tightest, most challenging and most satisfying platformers of all time, and for good reason.
Yes, it's designed to kill you. But that's why they made the levels really short, so you're not having to do tons of things at once, like in I Wanna Be The Guy. Plus, Meat Boy doesn't hide things like I Wanna Be The Guy. Almost every death in I Wanna Be The Guy is cheap.
Troll alert...
15:43 AVGN actually showed you the middle finger as you were saying that :3
I find the level design and such quite good. A challenge, and I have to disagree about the supposedly unfair parts.
What puts me off majorly and would spoil the enjoyment for me is all the dumb vulgarity.
I think you almost have to treat this game as an object that you would want to own like a movie, or a piece of art. You'll play through it and it won't take long, but it's something you can feel good about owning because it's good quality and witty. Essentially $15 is the price you pay for feeling good about yourself, and the ability to show this off to friends who might respect you as a gamer more.
Nice job on the level! Speaking let alone giving an opinion is hard enough by itself.
Ur a pro.
5:40 Friday the 13th on the NES... which I actually will say isn't as bad of a game really.
Seananners is an amazing individual. He doesn't make much of them anymore, but he used to do video commentaries where he just talked about random life stuff instead of the gameplay itself. Giving life tips or just rambling about how his outlook on life changes according to how he progresses in life etc. Really interesting introspective guy. When you know where he's coming from with his humor it's more interesting. But yeah, he's sort of adapted his content to what his young audience wants now...
TB likes AVGN? well colored me shocked
I personally think they should have allowed you to play as Doug Walker in this or even you as well Total Biscuit. Would have been interesting to have a Megaman character select like screen.
Angry Joe would have been funny to have in there as well.
Like your special attack would have your logo come out and the eyes would glow with fire everywhere and the british flag would appear behind you with your fanfare playing. :D
There is a GameGrumps reference at least :D
True enough XD
I knew he would make an AVGN reference at the end!
The way TB said scrotum sounded much more refined and professional then I thought was possible. You have a true gift TB
Just got this on Steam sale for 75% off... and I'm kinda sad to say I think it wasn't worth it.
As a platformer it's hopelessly dull and uninspired. And before you say "it's bad on purpose!" - first, it's exactly the go-to excuse which you can always aim for in an AVGN-themed game when you are incapable of actually creating something good and second - it would fly if the game was freeware, but for a $15 pricetag .. sorry. Same obstacle types are recycled to oblivion, bosses all have the same patterns and the overall creativity is nill. You play one level, you played them all. The perceived "difficulty" stems mostly from simply cramming a bunch of obstacles as closely as possible without rhyme or reason.. and that's about it. Compared to something like I wanna be the Guy or I wanna be the Boshy it's embarassing - those games are considered to be one big joke yet manage to surprise you with something new on every screen and are really rewarding if you stick with them. AVGN feels like someone's first attempt at a platformer with the sloppy level design that was simply thrown in during one afternoon and all creativity wasted on references and random insult generator (which you will start ignoring after the third death or so).
It's not terrible though. You can still play it, have fun hitting the correct timings and chuckle at occasional reference. But still...it's just very, very mediocre. I would say it's freeware quality, but, as I said, there are far better freeware games than this. Sorry James, you deserved something better.
Thing is the most meta thing to ever meta in the history of meta. A games commentator discussing a game about a guy who comments on games. Mind. Blown.
bring on the hate but 1:20 PewDiePie in a a nutshell
To be honest I know you were criticism the game hard but after you beat the boss @ 13:20 you sounded happy and seems that it was satisfying so that plus the great music and solid gameplay just sold me the game. I know it may not be original or the first one to do these kind of things but hey if I can find it enjoyable it's worth my money :)
Is TotalBiscuit, a persona?
I can't even tell these days, with any internet personality. Sadface.
I hope so. I hope John Bain isn't as wound up as TotalBiscuit.
The timing for the last flipping the bird before the video ended was perfect.
Being a good game isn't good enough any more?!?!
Yes, that happens whenever a market is saturated. Heres an exemple: lets say you have 50 differents shop in a town, they all sell the same thing. Every shop products are good, so which one win the market then? The one that offer a little more than just good products.
NSlasher Well I actually don't think that is what he was saying, but even so, I will stick to playing my good games, thanks :-)
Chances of seeing that block ahead of time are against the player. I didn't even see that block until he died. And after watching part of another video where they first went to Dungeons and Dickholes, bad game design was abound. Randomly in the level you run into some blocks that will fall after standing on them. They look the same as any other block in the level, and there is no way to tell they will fall until you've visited the bottomless pit.
How many pounds did you lose for this piece of shit platformer? LOL British currency pun.
lol I love how the game character flips you off as you made your final pronouncement :D
Yeah, I hate these damned retro, 8 bit, 16 bit-esqe games. Who could like binding of isaac, they bleed pixels, hotline miami, spelunky, super ninja house whatever, retro city rampage, NUCLEAR THRONE and on and on. They should all just die. Piss-poor games every one of them. Ban them and all the damned SHMUPS as well. Who the hell ever owned a NES, anyway? SNES? C64? Not The Angry Brit Game Nerd, according to him. Those gamers that play these crap games are just unskilled and should try a REAL game like an an online FPS with killer kiddies like the rest of the great gamers. \sarc .
PS: The Angry Brit Game Nerd wants to stamp out fun, IMO. He should go play dark souls and be happy. I think he's lost his marbles finally ... ;)
i dont agree with you for binding of isaac and retro city rampage because they have replayability or lots of thing to experience
Really?
This is why I never try to be sarcastic on the internet anymore.
Hell, he even had a sign that stated sarcasm at the end of his rant.
Yes, but in this game,it highly encourages you to stare at your character at all times. At many points, it has you carefully move forward while instant kill blocks phase in and out of existence, and you have to watch your exact placement, or die. This mindset leads you to not look right above you, showing the existence of said block.
Also, you completely ignored my other point about bad game design.
Plz do WTF Is.....Five Nights at Freddy's
at 8:48 the dev live stream said that the platform didn't go that far and it was just to scare the player, but the more and more people that play tested it, the more people said it should extend all the way.
The announcement of La Mulana 2 last week had some people saying silly things like "La Mulana shouldn't just take the difficulty of Dark Souls, they should take other design choices as well" even though it came out like 4 years before Demon's Souls was even out. Very smh-worthy.
ps. he's also part of the game station, home to hundreds of gaming related channels on youtube, such as TB himself, dodger, jesse cox, the yogscast, ro pansino, jon and arin (egoraptor and jontron), and it goes on for yonks.
Hey guys, TB, I was trying to remember the name of a title TB covered that was a 2d action sidescroller and quasi-platformer where the protagonist used weapons(guns and a katana) and had abilities one of which included these jump jets that were used to dodge. I think there was also an ability to slow down time? Cannot remember the name for the life of me nor if it was a WTF is or an Alpha Strike.
I don't particularly like the AVGN character, but I do have a lot respect for James and Mike. They have a clear love games in all forms and it's really great to just here them talk about their various experiences in gaming and other media.
I bought this game a while back, actually pretty fun and very hard. If you don't know much about avgn he makes fun of bad game mechanics and breaks down what is wrong with them (especially with his later videos). All of which are very valid points, like the pitfall instant kill trap on the snes edition that is the first ladder in the game. His suggestion actually makes an appearance on this, tis quite funny.
It's not out on PC yet. This is a PC gaming channel. He will do a WTF is if and when it gets ported to PC
In addition to this, as even just a starting psychology student, you'd know that Freud had massive addiction to cocaine, which, in this day and age, would've completely destroyed his career.
As his addiction and age progressed, his observations grew more and more warped and untruthful.
Freud also never had control for his studies(a sane person), nor did he have many subjects he based his observations on.
Freud also believed all mental illnesses stem from a bad relationship with one's mother.
I feel the AVGN is the ideal candidate to have a game made as far as youtubers go. Playing the humor angle was a very good idea.
When you said "is this better than Meat Boy? No. Dustforce? No." I completely agree with you.. Those games were awesome, and this doesn't quite stack up gameplay-wise.
But when you said "Cloudberry Kingdom? No." I said WTF? That game was terrible! This looks better than Cloudberry in every way.
I would like to hear Total Biscuit's idea of a game genre that hasn't been played out.
that robot at 3:14, it strongly reminds me of some game i played on zx spectrum loong time ago, cannot remember title though :(
James giving us the middle finger right at the end was perfect timing!
I feel like this whole video could have been cut down to. "This game was made for a specific audience. If you are part of that audience, you'll enjoy it. If not, give it a miss."
8:59 you can see the block that is going to kill you. If a game has any challenge in it, the designers have to place things to deliberately kill you. The only time that is bad design is if you have no idea that it is coming until you're already dead. So why would they place that block there? So you have to jump over it, so you can't just easily move through the game. I don't understand why this is a complaint.
Im sorry Total Biscuit, but when you said "ARGH I jumped off the Bloody ladder!" I nearly pissed my pants with laughter! :D
Isn't it great that UA-cam subbox is constantly several hours behind on uploads and sometimes doesn't even let me know when a new video is up? I was almost starting to feel like UA-cam is working properly again. How refreshing to be surprised in such a manner.
Your first point I find null, saying the game encourages you to focus on your character at all times isn't true - At the very point when that block was above you, there were no threats near by.
Your second point I hadn't seen the level so I didn't comment, but I looked up a video, and saw what you meant - The first blocks that cave in would be unfair, but when you fall in the pit, I believe it actually brings you to the key. Now you know the blocks can cave in, so you can react to the rest.
I like how the character gave you the finger as you quoted James Rolfe at the end.
This just made me happy to have never known the angry nerd after seeing those completely incoherent quotes. There's a difference between using explicit language for shock humor in a tasteful manner and spitting out word salad like you've suffered brain trauma :p
In his making of AVGN video, he does admit that his main form of humor was something he would've changed, but he has no real option to do so by now, seeing how it's the main thing he's known for.
Can you give give me some examples in one of the two levels I've seen? Because nothing seems very cheap - When I think cheap, I think instantly of IWBTG - for example, the apples do not fall with any form of consistency. You could be half way under, you could be a quarter under, you won't know until you have seen every individual apple fall.
I'm in the mood for some retro platforming, which new retro platformers do you guys recommend?
pretty sure James had little to NO input about what was put in the game. I could be wrong but I think it was all the work of the guys at Screw Attack, and James just gave the idea his blessing
It's not about the fact that they're retro so much as that's all that they are. People got tired of retro games not because there's a lot of them, but because most of new retro games have no redeeming value other than that. Volgarr the Viking is a really new retro game and it's fucking amazing, and people appreciate that, even TB.
I probably like James' more level-headed movie reviews over his AVGN stuff as much as I like that. His Monster Madness videos in October are all great. And thanks to those videos I found out about the great Coffin Joe trilogy of films.
I can tell this game is meant to be hard because it's old-school. Whether gamers like old-school hard gameplay is what determines whether they'll like it or not. That, or whether they're fans of James or not. I'm interested.
TB, Brothers was so good... Thank you for insisting on us playing it. Was a feels trip.
Same same. 24 hours and no sub updates, only just got this now. I went into manage subscriptions and selected to only show uploads and it seemed to have given me a little update, but I don't know why. It could be anything.
Yeah, the sub box has broken several times since they completely eliminated the old system (which I used a work-around to keep using).
The old one never broke. I have no idea why they forced this crap upon us.
At one point I sat down and watched the AVGN back-catalog, so I'm vaguely aware of the references here. It doesn't give me nostalgia for the show, though. It just makes me try to remember where each quote was from.
The quoting-another-thing humor is hit and miss at best. I feel like if I played this game, I would at best give it the occasional, "I see what you did there."
14.09 maybe the best game over screen I have ever seen in a video game ever. love it.
I don't mind a lot of what he's pointing out, with one notable exception:
Super Meatboy, in the very least (and I don't quite recall what others he mentioned) was a different style of platformer entirely. AVGN The Game is in the style of Mega-Man, whereas Meatboy was in the style of Kirby/Mario/Ninja Gaiden.
I tend to like Cynical Brit, and I agree with a lot of what gets said here, but it's clear he really didn't play too many platformers. Otherwise, I agree you need to be an AVGN fan here.
Resembles a more forgiving version of I Wanna Be the Guy than something like Super Meat Boy or Cloudberry Kingdom. The run-'n'-gun aspect of the game looks more appealing to me and with more varied obstacles than just jumping over a bunch of one-hit-kill spikes or something. I do like games like I Wanna Be the Guy and Super Meat Boy has its moments but Cloudberry Kingdom, Electronic Super Joy and games like that don't appeal to me at all.
no, no it does not
There are also multiple characters to unlock, and a ton of passwords - a lot of which havn't been figured out yet.
I think you are referring to Bleed? Its the only one I can think of with slow down time mechanics
The block is clearly there above you around the 8:59 mark. Ignoring the fact that the block is there are not questioning why is the only thing that leads to death.
I'll wait till this game goes on sale, it looks like fun, sure there's a lot of instant kills, but it's designed to make you learn where all the instant kills are so you get better at it the more you play
How is a 1 minute loop repetitive? Persona 4's Reach Out To The Truth was about 1 minute and ten seconds (with the soundtrack version looping that once) and it didn't get repetitive through a 60-90 hour game. A good song doesn't get repetitive.
he's like the reality TV of youtube video game commentary. It's terrible non-content, and loads of people love it.
I love how at 11:08, Nerd gives TB the finger while he's listing off platformers that he considers better.
So how long before TotalBiscuit The Video Game?
We need one of those now.
Yes, I did. I heard that he liked the game as much as someone who doesn't like these particular kinds of games can, and that it would have been good if it was released 5 years ago, etc.
And I don't have the exact quote, but he said something along the lines of that this was a bit of fan service to the fans of AVGN and hinted that it wouldn't sell to non-avgn fans.
My question is: Why does it matter if a game is made for fans of something? Why can't something exist PURELY for fans of something?
Well this is interesting. I think a game like this would be fun to play with friends in a hand-off style. That being that when you die you pass control over to one of your friends, then when they die they pass it to someone else, and it just repeats.
Also, the sign-off at the end of the video was perfect. with the in-game AVGN flipping off the player just before the video ends. Perfect timing.
I haven't played this game, but I'm going to make a prediction. I bet that when you beat it, there's a reference to Ghosts n' Goblins and it's revealed that the whole quest was an illusion by Satan, forcing you to beat it a second time while the game mocks you.
The way you said "Vast sacks of cash" made me chuckle. :P
I stand corrected about the model/make. I must admit, I didn't watch any of them because I don't like Le Bouf/The Beef as an actor. I don't think he is good, and I think Hollywood was forcing him down our throats. I was just trying to think of something flashy and completely aesthetic based on someone being fans of something. And I am most certainly not a "Car" guy, so I just guessed at what it vaguely looked like from my memory.
I tip my hat to you, kind sir.
Arching Rocks - Dark Castle (I think... don't exactly remember)
AVGN got really pissed at Dark Castle or whatever the face it was called because aiming was a pain in the a*s and did nothing anyways.
TB interviewed James Rolfe? Where is this glorious thing!?!
"Who the fuck is John Madden? He doesn't look like a athlete!" LOL
Gotta love it that the AVGN-character gives the finger in the game when TB says that the game is horrible and he will not be playing ever again.
Yeah, the truth is, a great song is only repetitive if the song is about 20 seconds long. All of Pheonix Wright music is about 1 minute 30. Anyone who says its got a bad soundtrack is full of themselves.
Did James just give him the finger coincidentally, or is there an emote button? If not that was timed perfectly.
I don't even like the genre, but I have Bleed, DLC Quest, Super Crate Box, Cave Story+ and maybe Intrusion 2 that all fit that description. There's also less retro platformers like Rochard, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Thomas Was Alone, Trine, and maybe Mark of the Ninja. Plenty of games to choose from, so this game isn't adding anything. Though from what I can tell it's a pretty decent game.
The fact that you can do inconsequential things like sky dive, ride roller coasters, change clothes and play as 3 different characters aren't really advancements.
It's still the same game at it's core.
The satire is still way to heavy handed and blunt. The Onion is good satire. The game isn't "adult." Hotline Miami was an adult game. GTA games are just juvenile and sophomoric.
I was thinking about that today. Will the seven and six year olds of today say in twenty years "Oh man, remember how great Call of Duty was? That shit was my childhood!" Similar to how many of the adults today say the same about Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil 2.
Yes, he even commented that while working on the movie he will still be trying to do his normal videos, but the production of them are not going to be as good.
Still, there are popular modern games out there that just have a story mode and no huge secrets. not as many as there were, but they still exist. And then there are games that haven't changed much since the first entry in their series. Pokemon is a big example.
We also need to examine the target audience. we live in a society where most children either play COD or Minecraft and then get into arguments about which one is better.
It's great how AVGN flipped you off during that line at the end of the video. Couldn't have had better timing.
I think Total Biscuit should have a video game!
Is it possible to get James Rolfe on The Co-Optional Podcast?
TB is a video game journalist. James Rolfe is a filmmaker. AVGN is a fictional character existing purely for entertainment value. TB has nothing to be jealous of. They're completely different professions.
Yes, and those are in the range of 18-22. It's not like neither of us have not been kids and wouldn't know this.
I think it was only natural for James to come up with a game like this. And since its a game made with him in mind and what he does i think it was really well made. Maybe a bit off regarding the timing..but hey! :)
