mcc doesn't even have to try to win over a crowd , her complete love of music and her beautiful soul just shine on naturally in her performances . what a woman , what a talent !
Mary is in between... like John Denver was. When you mix a bit of rock, a bit of country and a bit of pop, it's like magic! It's wonderful. It's not labeled. I LOVE this song. She didn't write it but she sings it the best.
Im a guy and came back here to this great song that I remembered. That was a great album Come on-Come On and even I would blast this and He think he'll keep her- those were just great songs! It was a nice era for the last of true country music NOT gone POP! So many great artists and songs. This was one of the tops.
I remember when this song came out. I ran to the record store and bought the CD. It's still a fabulous album 20+ years later. What I really love though is that shallow body acoustic Guild guitar she's playing.
The band of hers here is a wonderful accompaniment. She continues to welcome the very best musicians into her circle. Wise management and lead artist, Chris etal and MCC respectively😊!
I just noticed that guitar she's playing, Barry Gibb of the "Bee Gees" had played that exact guitar that she's playing. But Barry Gibb, played the blue one in most of his concerts. But on "Bee Gees One Night Only" in 1997, he did play the black one for a little while. And then he went back to his blue guitar.
MCC is a class act in every sense. Great band, flawless performance. The partnership between MCC and JJ has produced some outstanding music over the years. I think MCC brings this song to life in a way that Lucinda does not, at least of late. IMO, MCC has owned this song since she covered it on "Come On Come On" nearly 20 years ago. That said, I would still love to see LW do this early in her career with a crack band such as this.
What top notch talent Ms. Carpenter always has surrounding her, bringing to life the most brilliant music she hears in her head. This band, in one form or another, is on most - if not all - of her CD's; what chemistry they all share when together. Stunning...that type of chemistry is one reason I love to play drums with the fine group of musicians I play with. And for the negative comments about a person's hair, grow up for Christ's sake.
just love everything she does.someone made a comment that she"s not the most beautiful woman, sorry i have to disagree she is to me.any man who watches the video of "shut up and kiss me" will simply be blown away i am sure.
Great song and singer. If you haven't heard Lucinda Williams' version give it a listen, too. You will enjoy it. Mary Chapin has been under the weather lately. I heard her on the Diane Reem show on NPR over the holidays and she has a new Christmas album out and also seems to be healthy, thank God.
happy b'day Mary!
Incredible, this song made me fall in love with MCC... Lucinda is great of course, but like many songwriters, she thinks of herself as a writer first... sometimes you'll hear people like her, Nanci Grifith, Townes Vanzandt, etc. refer to their songs as someone else's... like they wrote the song, but it BELONGS to X
Thanks for clarifying Power, I though Mary had wrote this as well. But just as in the case of the great Ms. Williams, Mary is very underrated as well. I'd gladly play drums for either, but truthfully, having seen both perform, Mary would bring out the best in me, because sadly, you never know which Williams you're going to get. But 'Essence' on a good night would be magical! Also, Lucinda may have written the song, but Mary 'owns' and nails it here and on the CD.
If you love Chapin you MUST join her Facebook Group Fan Page. Come join and contribute any videos, photos and stories you may have about our lady! It's free and fun!
I believe I've picked out 2 of the stunning artists on here (other than MCC), John Jennings (guitar) and Robbie Magruder (drums). Mr. Magruder is a huge influence on my playing, his timing is to die for. Can anyone confirm my suspicions that this is indeed Mr. Jennings and Mr. Magruder? Also, anyone know who the brilliant piano player is please? At about 2:32, he takes my breath away.
@mthivier Lets see Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Fatih Hill, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Lee Ann Womack, to name a few female country music singers from today. How does "Today's Country Music Suck? In so many ways it has evolved into much more creative than so much of the Country Western Slop from the 60's and 70's that Bored most people to tears.
Is it too much to ask I want a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back Food to fill me up And warm clothes and all that stuff Shouldn't I have this Shouldn't I have this Shouldn't I have all of this, and Passionate kisses Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh Passionate kisses from you Is it too much to demand I want a full house and a rock and roll band Pens that won't run out of ink And cool quiet and time to think Shouldn't I have this Shouldn't I have this Shouldn't I have all of this, and Passionate kisses Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh Passionate kisses from you Do I want too much Am I going overboard to want that touch I shout it out to the night "Give me what I deserve, 'cause it's my right" Shouldn't I have this (shouldn't I) Shouldn't I have this (shouldn't I) Shouldn't I have all of this, and Passionate kisses Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses Passionate kisses from you Passionate kisses
Of course, she didn't write this one, although the intro might make you think she did. It is by hot country rock chick Lucinda Williams. Attention guys: playing this live works great for picking up chicks!!
Hey Jon, from far-flung Cape Town: you DID, and still DO! Wishing you much fortitude in all your endeavours! With MCC, and in all other spheres! Carry on, strongly! Huge respect!
Not only is MCC gorgeous, but smart. Went to Brown University. She can give me passionate kisses as much as she wants. Naturally I'll do the same. Much love, honey!!!!
I prefer MCC interpreting this song instead of Lucinda Williams. Although she is the author, the interpretation of Mary Chapin is so authentic... I love it.
I can't believe all the comments on they keyboard player....when you have done 1/10th of what he has I'll take your opinion seriously! His name is Yves Frulla... Google him and eat your words!,
@Harvey Logan Don't hold THAT against him! (lol) You're right, that's Jon Carroll, who I believe was playing with MCC in her Washington, DC days before she got her record deal.
One thing about cameramen;they never catch the right soloist;just like announcers, they mispronounce words constantly;and carpenters never fix stuck doors in their own houses,ad infinitum...Some things never change.
@derfunkhaus Yo! Know it all! The keyboards and guitar split the solo. What show do you work on? Are you a camera operator? If you are, then you know that you point the camera where the director tells you to point it.
Zippidog why be a hater. Lucinda is a wonderful songwriter and a decent singer but there is a reason that her songs are much bigger hits when other people sing them. MCC is a great songwriter herself. Come on Come on is possibly the best country album ever made. True she hasn't been a big deal for a long time though.
I don't see or hear the keyboard player acting even remotely out of line. I'm a professional musician too. He's not "showing off" any more than the bass player's dancing or anyone else in the band, I think he just ended up parked closer to one of the cameras.
Zippidog wrote "MJC who - irrelevant for 10 years now". Erm, Zippidog, do your homework before posting. Mary Chapin Carpenter has been working for the past ten years and has created numerous albums since, putting out beautiful songs for all her fans to enjoy. Her last offering, Come Darkness Come Light was MCC's first seasonal offering and it'd be a great stocking filler this Christmas. Lucinda owns the song, Mary Chapin does an excellent cover. End of story.
i love that drummer he's so crisp he can really lay it down
Back from the days when country music DIDN'T suck.
mcc doesn't even have to try to win over a crowd , her complete love of music and her beautiful soul just shine on naturally in her performances . what a woman , what a talent !
I'm not a Country Music lover, but she ROCKS. This is one of my favorite songs...i have missed hearing it!
Mary is in between... like John Denver was. When you mix a bit of rock, a bit of country and a bit of pop, it's like magic! It's wonderful. It's not labeled. I LOVE this song. She didn't write it but she sings it the best.
She's a woman who just rips pasion... great stuff!
I dont care how broke down my horse is, I love this.
Im a guy and came back here to this great song that I remembered. That was a great album Come on-Come On and even I would blast this and He think he'll keep her- those were just great songs! It was a nice era for the last of true country music NOT gone POP! So many great artists and songs. This was one of the tops.

right on
I was looking for "Passionate Kisses" by Lucinda Williams, but this singer sings it very well too.
Lucinda Williams won a Grammy for writing this song, when it was Song of the Year in 1993.
The band of hers here is a wonderful accompaniment. She continues to welcome the very best musicians into her circle. Wise management and lead artist, Chris etal and MCC respectively😊!
Need her back on radio
What’s a radio?
Love the song. Excellent backing musicians, these guys are real Pro's despite some of the derogatory comments on this thread.
Just "re-discovered" her recently . . . can't get enough!
Friggin gold
What a beautiful performance what a beautiful song perfect combination I love it it hits the heart
I love MCC
My children are now 26, 26 and 30. I played this when they were kids. They loved it.
This is one great song. Written by Lucinda Williams perfected by MCC.
I have seen MC live and she is an amazing performer.
What a show!!! This song is just wonderful. Mary made a great contribution with this masterpiece.
Mary is one of my favorite female performers, hands down.
My favorite song written by Lucinda Williams
Not bad for a girl from New Jersey! Thanks so much for the post- great song.
another energetic and entertaining song from her.
Great clip. So polished. ❤
so unjustly off the radar, grammy or not. wonderful.
she rocks
One of my favorite songs ever.
RIP John Jennings...Thank you.
MCC is a class act in every sense. Great band, flawless performance. The partnership between MCC and JJ has produced some outstanding music over the years. LOVE IT LOVE IT !! Wonderful artist.100 stars.

Saw her in 1999 in London with Dave Mattacks on drums and Duke Davine on guitar at the Lyric Theatre - best band I ever saw!
luv her live she is soooo awsome
yes she is so beautiful
This lady has always been just cute as a button! Great song & thanks for posting!!
One of my faves love your work 😊
You can tell she loves performing live. Look how passionately she performs this song!
What a luxurious ponytail that the keyboardist is rockin.
rock on we don't have too love although i do appreciate just the golden era
w / al music
just love everything she does.someone made a comment that she"s not the most beautiful woman, sorry i have to disagree she is to me.any man who watches the video of "shut up and kiss me" will simply be blown away i am sure.
Mary is such a good song writer,,,very sharp....cute as hell too!
you know its sad we dont get country now days like this
Actually She ain't country. Folk singer.
My fave #1
Great song and singer. If you haven't heard Lucinda Williams' version give it a listen, too. You will enjoy it. Mary Chapin has been under the weather lately. I heard her on the Diane Reem show on NPR over the holidays and she has a new Christmas album out and also seems to be healthy, thank God.

She did not start out as a country artist. She was a blend of folk and pop that blended itself into the country pop sound that made her famous.
I was thinking the same thing! I wanted to get a good view of that vintage Fender 12 string electric, not Mr. Ponytail on the keyboards!
love this..
So fxxxxing good
She does Lucinda's great song justice! nice!
j'adore!!!!! : )
Watching during covid isolation
love her :)
A songwriting genius...period.
yeah but she didn't write that one
Lucinda Williams, another great song writer.
If you love Chapin you MUST join her Facebook Group Fan Page. Come join and contribute any videos, photos and stories you may have about our lady! It's free and fun!
For sure
I love this lady she's very good lol Paul payton Birmingham England x x 😀❤🔯
Attention camera man: the instrumental solo is by the guy with the 12-string guitar, not the man on keyboards.
the hole band's performance is great!!!
strange that he mentions her as a songwriter and no one says that this is Lucinda William's song
I just want my Debbie....coz i love her..m

Awesome talent. Passionate kisses! Where do I get in line??????????
Oh Lucinda and Mary.. how did you know the most secret wishes of my most private heart?
@mbrownproject On the Country Music Album with this song, it lists Lucinda Williams as the writer. I wonder how they got it wrong?
Thumbs up for Jerry Walker!
Is it too much to ask
I want a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back
Food to fill me up
And warm clothes and all that stuff
Shouldn't I have this
Shouldn't I have this
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
Is it too much to demand
I want a full house and a rock and roll band
Pens that won't run out of ink
And cool quiet and time to think
Shouldn't I have this
Shouldn't I have this
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
Do I want too much
Am I going overboard to want that touch
I shout it out to the night
"Give me what I deserve, 'cause it's my right"
Shouldn't I have this (shouldn't I)
Shouldn't I have this (shouldn't I)
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
@DidYouReadEULA Yes, that certainly is John Jennings - one of my guitar heroes
Of course, she didn't write this one, although the intro might make you think she did.
It is by hot country rock chick Lucinda Williams.
Attention guys: playing this live works great for picking up chicks!!
We were kicking arse, doh.
Hey Jon, from far-flung Cape Town: you DID, and still DO!
Wishing you much fortitude in all your endeavours! With MCC, and in all other spheres!

@mbrownproject Lucinda did write this song. MCC does an excellent cover of it though.
Best song ever. Well. For today, anyway.
Still one of the best ever!
I love it.
Well there now...12 string and all!
@derfunkhaus actually hes playing exactly what the guitar player is playing
I can't believe all the comments on they keyboard player....when you have done 1/10th of what he has I'll take your opinion seriously! His name is Yves Frulla... Google him and eat your words!,
He's just channeling Stevie Wonder. I think its great. That's why they call it show biz. Put on a show for your fans.
What is the keyboard player looking over his shoulder at?
@derfunkhaus Yo! Know it all! The keyboards and guitar split the solo. What show do you work on? Are you a camera operator? If you are, then you know that you point the camera where the director tells you to point it.
Lucinda Williams wrote & released this song but her version pales in comparison to MCC's rocking version. The Lady is Too Good! WOW.
so do we/us men
Is it to much to ask to have a rock band
She looked so hot. Too bad the sound quality is so poor. Her voice is much more powerful in the wolf trap video. Look it up.
Zippidog why be a hater. Lucinda is a wonderful songwriter and a decent singer but there is a reason that her songs are much bigger hits when other people sing them. MCC is a great songwriter herself. Come on Come on is possibly the best country album ever made. True she hasn't been a big deal for a long time though.
the female Tom Petty awsome
heads up to you knumbnuts. Lucinda wrote it and does more justice to her own song...live and recorded.
MJC who? Irrelevent for 10 years now.
I don't see or hear the keyboard player acting even remotely out of line. I'm a professional musician too. He's not "showing off" any more than the bass player's dancing or anyone else in the band, I think he just ended up parked closer to one of the cameras.
es de lucinda
did I say she did buddy?
She didn't write this buddy.

i was never raped or molested but if i was a crime reporter i would try and save all that were!
Lucinda williams wrote this song, I think. But mary's version is the best...
