There is a 1993 concert where she, Rosanne Cash, and Nanci Griffith perform together. She does a VERY slowed down version of this, with Nanci singing harmony and bringing herself and me to tears...It's SUBLIME....Catch it, Chapin fans!!
Rosanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter & Nanci Griffith (1991) is the title. This song "Quittin' Time" starts just after the 39 minute mark of the video referenced above.
Just Flat Out.......GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!! Love the melody and the structure of how it all melds together. All I can say is, this lady is a wonderful LADY!!!! Talent Anyone????
My mom went to elementary and middle school with her, and I'm so glad that all these years later she shared the CD with me. I just adore everything I've heard.
this is definitely one of my favourite songs. This song got me her fan for life. I´ve got all her releases but never saw her live. I love her voice, best.
I saw her in Boulder CO last summer. Very small venue. She’s fantastic live. She changed a couple of her hit songs to blues, sounds better than the original.
The greatest Christmas gift I ever got was her hits on a awesome C.D. always will love her body of work..The world will be playing her music 200 years from now ! ! !
We've seen her several times in concert (as far back as when Riley the Golden Retriever would make an appearance), most recently last summer. She was in good voice and she took questions from the audience! Apparently, she needed shoulder surgery, which could account for why she in not touring this year.
this woman is one of the most prolific and awesome singer/songwriters i have ever listened to. and i love the fact that she plays a rickenbacker guitar, too....that is so hot to me...
Mary almost died a short time ago. This is one of her "I'm still alive" songs. Such a range of songs on her albums. All heartfelt, honest, glad to be alive. She has many, many years ahead of her. Many songs to be. Stay tuned......
Wow! I remember this. Was there and remember cable vision in DC and northern VA. Great memories of my younger days. MCC was up and coming in country music. Great musician and I still listen to her, new and old stuff.
Shawn Colvin was such a gurl then, how has so many years raced by...:_-( I saw this when it aired on TNN, only the second time I had ever seen Shawn (the first was on "Austin City Limits") and I thought then she was a legend in the making...how blessed we were to have the old TNN in those days to bring us this incredibly artistic music.
I much prefer the fast version of this song, as opposed to the slow live version on Party Doll and other favorites. The fast version is cathartic for me. My absolute favorite singer/songwriter, Chapin is a National Treasure!
This is also the first time I had ever seen or heard Shawn Colvin, and found her instantly fascinating. Who could have known then how far she would go...:-)
Girl you need to put out some new music. You will have know problem finding a record label to back you. You are so Loved, and talented. Please, I know you know you. Have written some fabulous music by now. We need you girl.
Mary one of my favorites. I used to shuffle to that song big time. I play my violin to it also. Yes I am hot!! Thanks for playing in the key of G Mary I love and remember all of your music!!! Kisses for you
Similar to Reba, Mary has that distinctive sound where you know it's her when she sings. Brains (she's a Brown grad) and talent all wrapped up in one - will always be a fav of mine!
Don't agree. Reba is pure country. She has that country twag in her voice. None of that with Mary. Mary Chapin's music defies labels. She crosses a number of genres. Was originally sold as folk. Her label marketed her then as country and found an audience. Very little of her music would I even consider country.
Chapin was never really much part of the Nashville scene or establishment; she lives in suburban Washington, DC, recorded most of her stuff at a studio in nearby Springfield, and whose quality of music, and the people she preferred to work with, kind of went against the rather insular Nashville grain. And she came along late; her first reasonable hit, "How Do", came when she was 31. But she was, and is, just too good to ignore. Her dad (Chapin Carpenter, an exec at Time magazine) was where she got her middle name. And I just flat love her. One-time Bread member Robb Royer wrote this with Roger Linn, and that's Shawn Colvin backing Chapin on vocals.
Its so discouraging to hear 30 is too old to break into the music business. Truly talented people have a seasoned craft that can hold up with time. I am so sick of these flash in the pan artists that Nashville pays to develop these days.
A 32 year old Mary was quite good during this period in her career. She was a very talented singer that could have risen to greater stardom had she remained firmly in the country music vein. Unfortunately her strong desire to also do folk acoustic and other non-commercial material kept her from achieving better commercial success.
+dlagrua But she is by no means the first person to do both country and folk. Think Kris Kristofferson and John Denver. And Kathy Mattea has converted more to folk. And yet much of the early Judds material is also very folk oriented. And now such rockers as Jon Bon Jovi and Justin Timberlake are discovering country. Yet some of the best music isn't always the stuff you hear on radio. I am waiting for the next traditionalist movement in country to come. I am a lyricist and have written many that would fit that genre.
I agree she could have been better but her awards and record sales during her peak years are stellar. Very few have accomplished as much she did in that five year window of success.
Hey Mary, I haved danced so many times to that song. A shuffle It looks like you ar skating across the dance floor. I just played my violin with some hot fiddle music with you. I am hot!! I wish that you would come back and make some more music.. I want to dance and play more music with you here. Kisses dear Mary
this version is more country than her Party Doll version. It seems she's crossed over from country to folk....more like a KD Lang or some of the other great vocals we know. I love her...I don't think there's a better songwriter anywhere.
Just for the record, she's referring to Shawn Colvin (who appears in the video). They were touring together in the Fall of 2023.

I agree. The version in the vid is good, like everything she does, but the slower one is perfection and changes everything.
Just Flat Out.......GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!! Love the melody and the structure of how it all melds together. All I can say is, this lady is a wonderful LADY!!!! Talent Anyone????
Love how Shawn Colvin shuffles and shimmies up to Mary's microphone at 3:35
My mom went to elementary and middle school with her, and I'm so glad that all these years later she shared the CD with me. I just adore everything I've heard.

The reigning queen of Country Folk Music. I love Mary Chapin Carpenter.
So gifted. I could listen to this very talented singer and writer all day long.
Its so refreshing to watch/listen to someone who is the real deal.
I sooo want to hear her on the radio again!!! She really helped me through my teenage years

WE LOVE YOU, MARY!! I SAW YOU MANY YEARS AGO AT THE PARAMOUNT CENTER FOR THE ARTS IN PEEKSKILL, NY! AWESOME!!!!❤❤
And Chapin and Shawn are still singing and touring together....23 years after this even...love them!!
Wow!!! Mary please come back to country music! We need you more than you know. You're the best there ever was.
Mary almost died a short time ago. This is one of her "I'm still alive" songs. Such a range of songs on her albums. All heartfelt, honest, glad to be alive. She has many, many years ahead of her. Many songs to be. Stay tuned......
What a performance - she (and the rest of the band) really does a great job on this one - she's a wonderful singer, one of my favourite C&W artists
She is just spectacular! Puts 1000% into her singing/songwriting AND performance!
Thanks for posting this live video!
Wow! I remember this. Was there and remember cable vision in DC and northern VA. Great memories of my younger days. MCC was up and coming in country music. Great musician and I still listen to her, new and old stuff.
I grew up listening to all the singer songwriters to come out of the mid to late'80's . They gave country radio a shot in the arm .
Truly love this up beat version, and the fact that Shawn, John J and Duke L, dear friends are in this video. Great song!

Always love Mary and Shawn. What talent.

This is also the first time I had ever seen or heard Shawn Colvin, and found her instantly fascinating. Who could have known then how far she would go...:-)

Mary Chapin Carpenter, Young and Beautiful and Super Talented!
Saw her in concert circa 1991. Great show!
It should be noted in the title of this that the song features Shawn Colvin--it's almost a duet! Thanks for sharing it and nice find!
Mary, I love that song. I play my violin out and play with you. Also shuffled many times along with you. Mary, so lovely to have you here.

She got a record deal at 29 and she sold over 14 million albums she did just fine.
She is a folk rocker.
Interesting comments, thank you! Just recently bought her ‘State of the Heart’ CD and have been playing it through on my way to work. Wow!
I had that various artists Hitchhiker cassette back in the day. (The Backdrop)
Mary even angels love your song, knowing some seasons they fly out of things to say still knowing your wings* Psalms 91 David

She is definitely very talented, one of best..I love her voice!
she is a diamond in the ruff. I Love ya my friend. Jerry
John Jennings on lead guitar (RIP)
Do you know who the bass guitar player is? Same guy that played with her at Telluride in 1991.
Just discovered it was Shawn Colvin. EOV credits answered my question.
The version of this song that I have on my CD is very slow, and rather sad sounding.
She still is a babe fools!
she was such a babe back then
Denise E. Bodinski, no she is not Harry Chapin's daughter. Jenn Capin is his daughter.
Oh thanks for letting me know.
Jen Chapin!
She is Harry Chapin's 5th cousin.
You have very soon girl! Bruni Monica, ora 13:00, Italie, E, Romagne, Boulogne
@gazzymodo I think it's appropriate for many situations in life. And nobody expresses it better than MCC. CCF
Appropriate for both of my marriages
@You1014Tube
i second that!
I was informed she isn't Harry Chapin daughter, I guess don't believe everything you read. Mary -Chapin C. sings great value & principal songs.
She is distant cousins with Harry and Tom Chapin. 4th or 5th, however that works.
Chapin is her middle name.
Is my memory wrong, or did Radney Foster join her onstage on Austin City Limits for a rousing duet of this song?
this version is more country than her Party Doll version. It seems she's crossed over from country to folk....more like a KD Lang or some of the other great vocals we know. I love her...I don't think there's a better songwriter anywhere.
Who is the other female singer in this video?
@Fularmor
Sure she is.
PEACE OUT FOR GOOD MONGO 1993
!
Odds are she didn't even write it. Good song, tho.
Mary, I love this song and we play together. I play a hot fiddle. I hope that your family and friends a re well and good
Mary a great song. I love to play my fiddle with you!!
CMT had voting for the 20 Greatest Women in Country Music in the last 20 years and Mary Chapin Carpenter was not on the ballot. A travesty.
Do, la, sol, fa, sol 2 volte (chitarra), (do, la, sol (pianoforte). Chitarra: sol sol fa, sol, do)
she was a babe
Hey Mary I love that song. Yes I play a hot violin with you Charlie Daniels would be envious Kisses for you
I agree, I like the slower version on Party Doll.
Really???? She is my absolute favorite. Definitely a travesty
