Fun fact. During the time period 1989 thru 1993, I probably went out to Lake Havasu from San Diego like 30 times. We stayed in a time share condo in Lake Havasu but spent a ton of time boating up river to Topock/Golden Shores. We would always stop at Golden Shores and have a couple of Lynchburg Lemonades They were the best. I think they topped 'em off with a splash of Black Cherry Brandy. Pirates Cove is just north of Topock on the CA side of the river. Back then you could water ski on this stretch of river and it was great skiing. Not sure you can do that nowadays. We used to play a game where we would set up a lawn chair on the sandy beach close to the water (Pirate's Cove Peninsula's) and put a can of beer in the cup holder. This is where the full hookup RV spots were right on the river. Anyhow, we'd leave the lawn chair on the beach, and get back in the boat. We'd drive a little south, then one of us would put on some skis and we would head north and race at a 45 degree angle to the beach where the chair was sitting. Then we would steer the boat and veer off suddenly to the northeast. The guy would let go of the ski rope and zoom into the beach. The idea was to glide towards the chair, turn around, sit in the chair, grab the can of beer and take a sip without knocking the chair over. It was a riot. Sometimes you'd fly in the chair and crash, other times you were far short and maybe once in a blue moon, you'd pull it off. We were nuts. Good times though.
Russ, our camping group does a one month stay at Pirates Cove every year for the last 5 years. Where the RV’s are parked is called the Peninsulas. There are 25 peninsulas, each one having 2 to 10 full hookup 50/30 amp campsites. This is where you camp right on the River. There is another campground at the boat launch, more like your typical RV park. You missed that whole area when you drove in. You should have gone to the check in office. They are great people and I’m sure they would have let you go in and check it out. Also, where all the construction is happening, they had to remove a lot of contaminated soil, there was something there years ago and leaked into the ground. What they’re building, I do not know, but we’ll be there again early next year and I’ll find out. Also, we have a Polaris ATV and take it there with us. You have to remember, you’re not in Arizona, you’re in Commiefornia. Here your ATV comes under the classification for a motorcycle and you have to wear a D.O.T. approved helmet. That’s the only thing that sucks about Pirates Cove. You may get away with not wearing one, but the San Bernardino County Sheriff patrols the park and area. My friends were stopped for not having helmets on, did not get ticketed, but were told to go get their helmets, which they did an wore them every time after that. We love Pirates Cove even though it’s in that Not Golden Anymore State. And don’t forget your California off-road sticker. You can get it at the DMV in Needles. After all that hassle, you just might want to keep your doodle-bug in AZ. 👍😜
Wow ...thanks for sharing...we used to vacation in Havasu was there for the grand opening of the London Bridge...back when Bullhead City was a trailer park! A hokey dokey fun trailer park with a general store and trailers! Dad bought an acre of land in Havasu for 365 bucks! One mile from the London Bridge! On McCoulough BLVD
Oh my gosh!! You can't even begin to imagine!! You are my UA-cam hubby!! You look for what I'm looking for, you zoom in on what fascinates me, you explore when I'm wondering. I love it!! Thank you so very much!!
The pipeline bridge is where the original route came across the Colorado River. It was converted soon after I-40 was constructed. The trestles you were seeing on your right when you crossed the river is the BNSF Southern Transcon and the west end of the Seligman Subdivision that runs from Winslow to Needles.
The Old Trails Arch Bridge which used to be the old Route 66 bridge featured in the film The Grapes of Wrath and also featured prominently in the opening credits of the movie Easy Rider
Thanks, Russ for another trip outdoors. There is a century’s or centuries old Indian maze adjacent to the natural gas pumping plant on the California side. It isn’t well marked but anyone can find it by poking around a little. There’s a dirt road on the South side of the freeway and a small parking lot. Sadly, our forefathers wiped out part of the maze for a railroad and the freeway.there is still a lot to see, walk through, and be amazed.
Hey! We have taken our boat down through the Topock Gorge to Havasu. Had to turn the engine off while floating down. It is a beautiful and peaceful float. Yes, the wall writings on the walls are cool 😎. Highly recommend you try it by boat. Sure beats that desert drive on I -40!
A long time ago it was all sand even the road to get back to the camp sites you really had know what you doing w/o getting stuck in the sand. Had a lot of great memories camping there. I hear it’s all paved now.
Russ, on my Slab City, Blythe, Needles, Yuma playlist I have a promo for Pirate Cove resort. Amazing place. I missed it 2 years ago, and didn't know about it until I saw your earlier video. That Cloud Museum that you found will be in the future as well. Thanks. Happy Easter.
All your showing is Pirates Cove when you went in you should of made a left before the store all hook ups on the river and lots of trails you take the road to the check in and its a great place to camp on the river and trail ride your boat is at your camp
We stay at Pirates Cove every year, the last week in September. It is an excellent place to camp on the river. Full hooks up and a very easy walk to the river and to get on your water craft and be on the Colorado River.
That tower is a zipline. There is a corresponding tower on the far shore. They have a great restaurant right there too. When we stayed in 16, we ate there but the zipline was not running. Very cool place, especially for boaters.
The industrial construction going on is for the PG&E Chromium clean up sites. Moving from one site to another and the land where one plant is will be given to the Mohave Tribe. There will be water pumped and treated / cleaned up. We've all seen the Erin Brockovich movie?
Hi Russ. I was doing a self drive through Arizona way back in 1993. I drove up the Catalina Mountains near Tucson and also down to Bisbee near the sounthern border. I love to see you do the drive up the Catalina's. It's a magnificent drive. There's even a ski resort up there ! It'd also be great if you could get a drone veiw of the huge aircraft storage and dump areas near Tucson. Some are military aircraft storage areas but I think you'd still be able to get a good distant view of them.
Park Moabi campground. Pirates cove is a private concessionaire who runs it for San Bernardino county. The Hum Mee Chomp petroglyphs are south of the bridge in the Topock Gorge. Accessible from the water. We used to launch our kayaks from Moabi, camped along the river. Had a transport service pick us up by Castle Rock north of Havasu.
Hi Russ ! Nice Video.. Cool place if you like the desert.. Yes.. a couple more weeks and we will be in perfect weather.. Yeah ! It was a very Long HOT Summer.. Well for some of us... You were fortunate to be in the cooler climate on your 2020 virtual Summer Tour ! Stay Happy and Safe ! Talk Soon !!
🙋♀️ Hello Russ! What a nice day this was. There's more to the Dessert than meets the eye. I loved going back to the mine to see the goldfish yesterday. Oh the places we'll go with Dr. Russ! 👍
Hell Russ, Hey Russ if you want to hide away that would be the place . Very nice place, wonder if it is privately owned? So quiet an looks like a place to relax Larry & Linda
Russ. Not my business but I often wonder if you travel armed. I know you visit a lot of remote places in the good ole USA but you never know when you may come across some ne'r do well types. Safe travels, nonetheless and thank you for your videos!
I love the drone footage. Is it possible that the river front camps are BLM camping? I see the thumbs up on drone landing is back sometimes, I like a successful landing with the thumbs up.
ITS GREAT PLACE TO CAMP. n BOAT 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙. Campground is ALL Part of Pirates Cove. There are a lot more beach spot campsites just above the campground on the river. With big 50’ to 100’ beach spots for your campsite. And the way California is... Don’t even bother taking the Dusty Nugget to the California Side. You will PROBLY spend more time lookin for a legal place to drive it than it’s worth. 😂😂😂😂😂 No Really... PROBLY protecting some rare ant species 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

We have camped right on the water at Pirate Cove. There is an endless freight train that rumbles through camp. All. Night. Long.

Lots of little coves along the way that you could just chill and jump off the small rocky cliffs.
Havasu local for 14 years
Played a lot of pool and drank a few of them “Topock Lemonade s” at that marina /bar in Topock.

Is Castle Rock by the Bat Cave ?
By Crystal beach.
No truck has ever slowed down in a 55 mile zone no matter what state it is in. Be real.

What does BLM stand for? Is this a southwest thing?
Bureau Land Management.
@@kimberlyshalaby1134 thank you! It was driving me nuts.
Bureau of Land Management, federal agency part of the department of interior
Black Lives Matter. (Just kidding)
Government owned land. Open for recreation
What is BLM you keep referring to?
Well it's not black lives matter. It's bureau of Land Management. FYI
Government owned land. Usually open for recreation
@@chuckstith838 OK thanks!
So, you're making a list, are you? But are you checking it twice? Oh, wait... that's another guy with a mustache and beard. Nevermind.
