My favorite plane of all time, hands down. I turned to look down at my foot, and of course out of nowhere, from west to east that Tomcat did a wing-swept low pass right above me. I almost lost my bladder control right there, but it was the coolest sound I ever heard! I miss this plane and miss my father. Simply awesome....
Watched them operate from U.S.S. Enterprise. In the air, off the catapults, grabbing a wire, sitting quietly in the hangar bay, just remarkable machines.
Indeed! The truth. One of the greatest fighters ever made. It was designed to be a long range air superiority fighter/interceptor around the AWG-9/AIM-54, but Grumman put so much power, performance and maneuverability/pitch authority that a driver like 'Okie', 'Snort', "Heater', 'Jungle' or 'Digger' could spank the hell out of any 4th gen and older fighter all day and never lose.
@@mar3869 Yep. It was way ahead of its time. The airframe potential was still not even close to being realized. The technology just started catching up in the 90s for what the airdrame was design for. The F-14D upgrades gave a glimpse of how it gave the pilot unparalleled capabilities. It was going to be in the AST-21 design, which would have been what the F-15EX is becoming, but Grumman was doing it back in the early 90s. Grumman was designing AESA radar, thrust vectoring nozzles, 30,000+ lbf thrust class engines that could make it super cruise with payload on etc. mind blowing stuff until Dick Cheney told them air superiority was no longer needed after the end of cold war. @@yoyoyoyoshua It dominated the sky for 36 years and enemies simply wanted nothing to do with it. Nothing Navy has ever gotten can compare to the F-14 Tomcat (F-35 is a useless pile of cr*p that will never work).
@@Inspadave You are obviously trolling an F-14 video. It was very powerful, very fast and very maneuverable for its size and it could out-maneuver much smaller planes because of the airframe design. You just see how it pulled straight into a vertical at only 300 knots gaining 1000 feet in no time WITHOUT having even afterburners on, let alone being in full zone 5 afterburner. It has proven to be one of the greatest fighters of all times. It dominated the air space whenever it was in battle during the line of death conflict in the 80s where it locked up tons of MIGs, but was not given permission to shoot due to Reagan ROE. I have many books on Kindle and seen the pilots speak on that both for the 80s and 90s. BVR, WVR or close end dog fighting. Normally just the sight of an F-14 loaded with missiles and wings swept back going guns blazing at Mach 2+ was enough to scare the enemy away. It could do everything exceptionally well and there was no other fighter in that era that could do some many things so well. You could continue with your ignorance all you want, but it does not change what the reality and history tells us about it.
Notice the pain and slur in the voice of the RIO when he says "good pull". The pilot was pulling some serious Gs when he pulled the nose up into the vertical. "Anytime Baby!"
Looking at the two helmets in tandem focused straight ahead in the cockpit as the Tomcat is zipping by just 20 feet over the ground, looks like a very fast racing car just zipping by and two drivers are focused straight ahead to where they are going. Such a surreal thing to watch.
That's when the F-14 got the powerful GE 110 engine upgrade. The F110-GE-400 engine produced 28,200 lbf (125 kN) of uninstalled thrust with afterburner.

The F-14 was badass, but as in all things in life, we move along. There is a reason that we do not export the F-22, because it is the scariest thing in the sky and are not sharing it. I wish I had the opportunity to work on it.
