It sucks that they changed the names of the enemies in the remake. Mack who had the 1st Star is now called Claymore, and Yardavick in Seaside Town I think is changed to Spearhead.
Thanks to that flow chart I now know that lying is the best thing to do when confronted about stealing something I definitely did steal. You learn something new every day!
Wow I actually learned things! I thought this was going to be the billionth video to tell me about Samus sleeping in a bed or the red essences you can get from a dream.
4:26 When I was a kid, I could never find the treasure, mainly because I didn't realize the "from Mario's perspective" part. It wasn't until I was an adult replaying the game on Virtual Console that I finally figured it out, and boy did feel stupid afterwards.
I was totally ready to roll my eyes as I've been playing this game at least yearly for the past 25+~ years on and off and have delved into the coding several times. But there were actually several things I did NOT know. So nice video :)
I actually thought the mushroom from the Goomba Triplets thing was intentional when I was younger. Either way, funny typo or intentional brilliance. The rest of this is crazy, though. You dug incredibly deep and found stuff I never would've thought of.
ao obscure thing i discovered: in the "sunken ship" area you can find a accessory called the "safety ring". the description says it protects the wearer from "mortality" insta-death attacks. BUT, i've found that it ALSO protects the wearer from ALL BAD STATUS EFFECTS! i always put it on Peach, since she has abilities that can cure status effects!
It happens right at the beginning. EXOR script has it "set" invincibility, which doesn't ADD it, it sets his special status to ONLY have it. If EXOR had the invincibility selected at the start, had the set invincibility script start after the eye is restored, and let the eye script remove the invincibility, then EXOR would be immune to Geno Whirl the first time the eye is defeated, but not the second (when the game sets it, then nulls it)
Great vid! It’s always very insightful to look at things from a programming perspective to what actually causes oddities like these to happen. Here’s the weirdest thing I’ve noticed about this game that I’ve never seen anyone talk about: every playable character utilizes their diagonally downwards facing sprites for their HP window, with the exception of Peach, her portrait is completely unique and looks nothing like her diagonally downwards sprite. If you look closely, it looks very similar to her sprites when she’s tied to a rope in the Bowser fight, but it’s not a 1:1 match, as her hair, face, crown jewels and brooch all have a few differences to them. It may or may not be an early sprite that the devs decided to keep around.
If I remember correctly, if you time the volcano star power just right, you can catch the yellow axem ranger, giving him at least a purpose for having a xp value
Hi, I work in QA and have plenty of experience with QAing boss fights. Taking a look at your vid, specifically with Geno Whorl ability being used against Exor. Your vid is correct in that the Exor boss immunity scripting is pointing to a bug. However, we would also need to look at Genos ability being cast to see what flags it has as well. In regards to how the dev kept this in for the remake, it's a choice. There are some bugs out there, that may not necessarily need fixing. If you defeat Exor using Genos Whorl successfully. I would argue your fun is more important than the fight being bug free. So long that Geno using it in that capacity doesn't soft lock or cause other issues 😊
I went into this video thinking it was yet another click bait...but you came with a lot of "knew" stuff (I'm the Black Axem Ranger today). The only one I knew was the Geno Whirl!
The Geno whirl trick reminds me of the DX Chrono Trigger bonus where Robo has an upgrade called Apocalypse Arm. If you get a critical hit on any enemy or boss, there’s a chance you can get 9999 damage. Really easy way to kill Lavos.
It’s possible to softlock against Formless if you encounter it with 0 FP, no FP recovery items, and Formless runs out of FP before killing you, as Formless is immune to physical attacks until you turn it into Mokura, and for some reason Run Away is disabled against it.
"Just because something is unintentional doesn't make it bad" In another Square example, the Peninsula of Power north of Pravoka was left in place in almost all remakes of Final Fantasy 1, giving a high risk, high reward grinding spot once your party knows Fir2/Fira. In an even bigger example, the ability to interrupt attack animations with the start of certain other attacks (combos) was accidentally allowed in Street Fighter 2, then it became such a popular feature that Capcom turned combos into an intentional mechanic.
moves canceling into other moves, and combos being possible due to the mechanics of hitstun, were actually two separate incidents of this type! capcom rolled with both, wisely.
Of these, the only ones I ever noticed were the text issues like "Recoers 30 HP." I didn't know using that mushroom would turn you into one, though. I used it a time or two and didn't get that effect, but I almost always prioritized status immunity accessories on my front liners, so that's why I never saw the side effect. I thought the "but..." just referred to the fact that they can only be used in battle.
Did you know that if you keep using Mario's Jump (his first special) over and over through the game, this will get keep getting stronger. This is separate from levelling up. Use it enough times and it becomes a more viable option than Super Jump.
My favorite game, played for decades, even speedrun with some skill. I learned a bunch from this video. Cool facts! Had no clue about the rose town toad
If I recall correctly, and I could be entirely wrong here... But the reason the one hit kill works on Exor is because its invincibility is actually coded as a buff. Like he has automatic & theoretically infinite Red Essence right out the gate. When the eye(s) have their health reduced to zero, it causes Exor to be of all his buffs. The oversight being that mortality protection is actually also a buff. It also explains why you're never given access to any magic that would strip an enemy of their buffs, however Smithy Culex do. Which also explains why that buff-stripping spell, Shredder, will remove the positive boosts of accessories like the Ghost Medal, Troopa Pin, and Quartz Charm. And yes, Shredder can remove the invincibility of Red Essence. Again, could be totally wrong here, been a long LONG time since I looked into it.
Here's a question you might be able to answer: When I was a kid, I got to Smithy's last form and eventually had no healing items left but one Kerokerocola. When I used it, I got another as a bonus item. Over, and over, and over. This happened at least three times. Was this a failsafe for a kid-friendly game without a lot of grinding? Or just a rare occurrence?
The odds of getting a freebie kerokerocola are 25%. There's no hidden mechanic to make that more frequent if you're near death. Sounds like you just got lucky friend.
I've noticed over the years that you can start a Freebie chain if you repeat certain actions in combat once a Freebie has been activated. For myself it usually meant using that item with the same character every time. I've never looked into the details of this though and why it works.
Cool video! Pretty rare to see some old school SMRPG content these days. When the Goodie Bag gives you 5 coins, does it use the bigger coin sprite during battle? If not, that would have been cool. And that Carbo Cookie thing with Bowyer is really random and interesting. I wonder if it was supposed to be a different item at some point - I wonder how many items you can get before the fight that can target enemies.
It uses the same sprite whether it's giving 1 or 5 coins. The intent behind the carbo cookie thing is a mystery. Considering they didn't add animations for giving commands back or animation for the carbo cookie tells me it likely didn't get very far in the development process.
Mokura/Mokuka is likely a reference to the Intangir in Final Fantasy 6, which was released 2 years prior, as it has a similar mechanic, where it's invisible until hit with magic.
It's so convoluted lol and why is group 2 watered down with 10 coins 😂. At least the 3 flowers in group 3 is optimal. 5:20 bonus out of order 😅 unreal. Good digging for the vid as no way I'd guess.
The only one of these I didn't know at all was the Carbo Cookie for Bowyer. I knew how to make him say Go, world! but I didn't know what it was, so you did teach me something new.
Finally, stuff i didn't know With the exception of the treasure chests that change, thought that was common knowledge, as a kid i remembered that part whenever i replayed the game
It's been ages since I last played SMRPG and thus this is probably a dumb thing to post, but when you mentioned the odd exp value for the Axem fight being the value from the lone "actually died" target being split 3 ways, my first thought was "don't inactive party members also get exp, thus meaning that the total would actually be split 5 ways?" I'm almost certainly missing/forgetting something, so apologies if this is an ill-informed inquiry on my part.
Inactive party members do get experience, but experience given by enemies is divided by how many active party members there are. It's a little odd but that's the way it is.
Most people don't know about the goodie bag because it's better to sell it than even try using it 556 to get more out of it than selling it. Most guides just tell you to sell it ASAP anyway.
One thing I will correct is the remarks on "developer oversight" and showing images of Nintendo employees like Miyamoto and Iwata is ironic, because neither person was very involved in making the game, and technically Squaresoft (now Square/Enix) were the developers of the game. Ironically, Square wasn't very involved in the HD remake on Switch though.
# 0001 I remember when I had returned to the Mushroom Kingdom after rescuing the Princess from Booster, that the guy who Croco stole his wallet from finds a frog coin and gives it to you because he thought it was the coin Croco stole from Mallow. Which led to the question, did the frog coin Mallow punched out of Croco was Croco's coin? Because if so, then that would've been hilarious and rightly deserved on Croco's part. - I wonder if that sheep trick would do the same thing when you had to fight Mack and the Shysters since they do the same respawn mechanic.
I read this in the old Japanese strategy guide years ago and my memory is a little fuzzy but I don't think I've seen any video mention it before. When you get back to Seaside town after getting rhe star and Yardovich asks you to give it to you, he goes off screen and threatens/tortures the elder. The more times you refuse and he goes back to threaten him, the worse the reward you get from the elder after the fight. IIRC if you give away the star the first time he asks, you get a flower box

Ive been playing this game for literally 24 years (im 27). I learned to read to play this game better (i taught myself how to by trying to sound out the words myself). The sheer number of times I've played this game, I've noticed so many things throughout the years i rarely dont know something about it. When the remake came out, my coworker asked me about tips and tricks, and we had a long discussion about tue one thing, not a lot of people discussed in regards to the original. Sound played a major part in the "timed hits" system. Grant it now for me 90% of my hits are based on muscle memory, but when I describe them now I use phonetics to explain the timing. Most all the attacha have sound related queues that help you know when to press the button and the remake removed a lot of those. 24 years of game play and my only factiod most dont know is that. You learn a very good sense of timing and how music works because of the way the timed hit system works
Nice breakdown if you ever get a chance to look into why a trouble controler makes fire orb and super flame not work what causes that to fast? Works for every thing else anyway great video!
the compound bit clear in #2 is correct, I tested it on a modded goomba lol I personally think, just from the impression I get from how the devs worked on this game, that this might have been an oversight they caught during development but left in because it'd be funny. I have no way to prove that though, most of the smrpg devs don't remember specific details like that one.
Lol poor goomba. That's a perfectly reasonable theory. Either way I'm glad they left in the remake. They fixed some things in the remake but not that so it's pretty clear it's intended now.
I knew about the Axem Ranger's thing with the EXP but some of those other ones I'd missed or didn't even notice. Like I'm pretty sure if I'd noticed to Mokuka and Mokura one I'd have had a heart attack for the rest of that short little encounter thinking there was another monster.
As a kid I could of sworn I had Geno Whirl work on Johnny once but I couldn't ever pull it off a 2nd time to prove it. That wasn't something to strange for kid me tho since I basically never managed to time that move right which is why I remember it so strongly. Everything I see as an adult suggests its impossible tho. Granted I have seen some weird glitches on cartridge games before so I can't fully rule it out.
I've played the shinding out of this game so I know almost everything, I even had the strategy guide for it. The only thing I didn't know was Bowyers reset by Carbo Cookie.
The real EXP scam is using the star to kill enemies and then letting yourself get killed. In the SNES version you’ll start from the last save but you keep all the exp you just got.
Finally a Super Mario RPG video that shows actual secrets we didn't know instead of recycling the same secrets we've already known for years!

Axem Rangers swipe the experience points just like they swiped the star piece
They can't even be defeated in battle like normal enemies. They're just too good.
Interestingly, they only give 17 experience in the remake, as well.
@@katt-the-pig From what I've seen, it's because they didn't give the Rangers any exp this time, just the Blade.

i always put it on Peach, since she has abilities that can cure status effects!
Many of the item descriptions are just bad.
I discovered that back in the day as well, and it is Peach's accessory from that point on for those reasons.
So this entire time during the Rose Town problem we've been getting only three flowers when we could've gotten five instead!
The only one of these I knew was the reasoning behind Geno Whirl working, the rest of that was all totally new to me, very cool!
it's cool that you;re using the Lazy Shell Editor to explain some of these Facts.

I have no way to prove that though, most of the smrpg devs don't remember specific details like that one.
Lol poor goomba.
That's a perfectly reasonable theory. Either way I'm glad they left in the remake. They fixed some things in the remake but not that so it's pretty clear it's intended now.
Same here! I was team "it's intentional" forever and finally feel vindicated. Great vid BTW!
Very cool video. You're quite the expert
I enjoyed you are video.
Your too kind!
The axem rangers have exp values because you can fight them in the factory final world.
Where can i find and download the forest maze secret treasure variants chart?
Screen shot what he showed haha
pretty impressive investigation you did here for this.
the rangers have stats for later in the final dungeon when you re fight earlier bosses as regular enemies.
The machine made versions have different experience stats than the originals.
You're video is awesome. Thumbs up.
Well done. You have shown me the secret knowledge.
I wonder if the axem rangers exp values are used for their clones later on
I've played the shinding out of this game so I know almost everything, I even had the strategy guide for it. The only thing I didn't know was Bowyers reset by Carbo Cookie.
They’re just standing there… MENACINGLY!!!
Fun video, thanks for making it.
Did you know the Nimbus Land dream sequence can give you 2 Red Essence?
I learned something new! Thank you!
Interesting. I didn’t know about most of these.
The real EXP scam is using the star to kill enemies and then letting yourself get killed. In the SNES version you’ll start from the last save but you keep all the exp you just got.
Geno whirl works on the boss that duplicates itself.
This is an awesome game and still easily my favorite
I've played this game since it came out, and I didn't know any of these lol
