The massive world was an incredible feat in itself. RBY all exist on cartridges with 1MB of storage, GSC has 2MB. Imagine. Three overworld time-of-day palettes, 251 monsters all with individual animated front and back sprites, game data and cries, two regions, thousands of lines of dialog, and the programming code that puts it into an interesting game. In two bloody megabytes. Incredible.
Pokemon Crystal Clear is a romhack that is open world and has the entirety of Kanto and Johto and you can start in whatever city you want and get every badge in whatever order you want Just throwing that out there
Odd that it was considered industry standard by today's standards, for sure. I blame programmer accessibility and the inability of such to be able to make a truly optimized system.
Black and White 2 were especially cruel about us wanting to visit past regions. The Cave of Being’s map description claims it leads to Sinnoh, but when you actually go there it’s just ONE ROOM that exists to spawn Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf. 🤦♂
I was completely unaware of this! It's like the ultimate offense to anyone who wanted to visit a previous region, and I'm sure they knew what they were doing! Greetings!
Maybe, that used to be the original goal but was scrapped due to numerous reasons we can think of. And this is a mere leftover from an idea. Imagine if it even was just a "piece" of Sinnoh.
Most of the space goes to making the game cinematic and detailed. They would have to reduce quality to quantity for that to happen. Edit 12/27/24: You guys know I don’t make the game right? Lol
If it is possible, it could be split in parts or merged as lock on tech. Or, maybe as DLCs since it isn't possible for them due to having quality in cinematics. But, this is just my speculation.
I can write with certainty that visiting Kanto from Johto in pokemon crystal was one of my favorite moments ever in pokemon. I never realized it's come up but that was something I always looked for this to in every pokemon game. The battle frontier in Emerald, the sevii islands in Firered/leafgreen, etc. However nothing could ever come close to Finishing a world and finding another world right near my backyard was the best experience I had as a kid. I really think that experience helped make me a lifelong pokemon fan. Maybe someday when gamefreak makes good games again or a good remaster, getting even 2 worlds like in gen 2 can happen.
I stopped holding my breath for gamefreak to make good games a long time ago. I came back briefly to play ORAS but the Battle Frontier not being in the game confirmed to me that I should not buy their games anymore. Even though the frontier was only in emerald, they should have put it in the ruby and sapphire remake, they must have known how disappointing its absence would be. And from my friend who still buys the new games to this day, he complains that they put absolute minimum effort in yet still buys the games. I don't understand it. It's one of those franchises that does everything right in marketing but everything wrong in all other aspects.
@@shirakawamaseru implying it's only nostalgia? It's not. Even the games I skipped as a kid were good when I went back and played them as an adult. Many different game series stayed good throughout childhood into adulthood as well. Pokemon did not. It just became a lazier and lazier moneygrab with objectively lower quality and effort over time.
3:09 "Honestly, I think this was a good thing, because you had more space for wonder." Yeah... When I found the Regi caves (and the underwater cavern that opened them), they sent me on a real-world quest to figure out how to open them. I showed the strange dots to my Nana to see if she could make sense of them, and she told me it was Braille. This led to me borrowing a book on Braille from my school library, which brought out a sense of wonder when I realized the dots in the game indeed matched the ones in the book exactly. It felt amazing when I was actually able to read the Braille in-game (via cross-referencing, granted) and decipher the rather esoteric puzzles to open the Regi chambers. Would that I could recapture that feeling...
@@tylerfox5003 Not all regions include the cipher in their manuals. My Fire Red and Ruby manuals (which I just went back to check) from the US just say “The world of Pokémon is a vast and mysterious place with many hidden wonders. If you happen upon a place where there is writing on the walls, but you can't read it, think about something that might help you solve the puzzle...It might be Braille. If you are unable to search out the answers you need, remember that you can always contact Nintendo for help on your journey.”
In HeartGold and SoulSilver there's an event area called the Sinjoh Ruins that exists between Johto and Sinnoh. I always used to imagine it being possible to keep traveling north and eventually explore around in Sinnoh, which would have been really cool given that it would kind of in a way be doing the opposite; traveling into a future region from a past one. Alas, this was never anything more than a dream.
Somebody on the comments told me about a cave I hadn't heard before in Black 2 and White 2 whose description says that it connects with Sinnoh (Cave of being), but it's all lies, and its purpose is to encounter Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf. Such a big disappointment.
I mean, given time, there may someday be a romhack connecting the regions, if there isn't already. Something I found disappointing was that they didn't have the sevii islands in heart gold & soul silver. Sure, those weren't a thing til gen 3, but it would have been neat. I'm sure they could have come up with stuff for it.
@@nicholasmorgan7609 It's easier said than done to do this via a romhack, and even if someone could get it to work they wouldn't easily be able to do the complete regional overhaul to fit in with the rest of the game that GF would do. The difference in when the games take place could mean different gym leaders and even building layouts in some towns, the textures and models would all be replaced to fit in with the graphical style of the rest of the game, and there would be an entire post game story written to give the player more of an actual reason to be there beyond the basic novelty. It's these sort of things that make exploring another region in another game worth it to begin with. Exploring through the region to find out what's different and what's new and what it has to offer you on top of the base experience in the starting region. Otherwise, there's not much of a reason to, for example, travel north from Johto to Sinnoh when you can just insert Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum into your DS instead. For those that just want access to all the regions, there are fangames that basically just stitch as many of the games together as they can and that can be good enough for some people. PokeMMO and PokeOne are probably the best examples of this out there right now. If you're the kind of person who just wants the regions in and doesn't care about it all fitting together properly, these games could be worth checking out. For those like me who dream of this being done more properly though, they don't really scratch that itch.
@@nicholasmorgan7609 There would be no point in having Johto and the Sevii Islands co-exist without major overhauls. The Sevii Islands only exist to catch the remaining Johto Pokemon unavailable in RS. There's a few good things about them like Mt Ember being a more fitting location for Moltres than sticking him on Victory Road. But most of the islands are rather unmemorable.
I was very hopeful Ruby and Sapphire would have previous regions when I was a kid, especially Johto, which I loved. The fact that FR/LG had Kanto again, and there was a post game, but it was just the Sevii Islands, and not Johto, infuriated me lol
I've always wished for this. It probably would never have the same effect as discovering Kanto did because the element of surprise would not be there. But it would still be cool to see how our old stomping grounds have changed over the years and revisit old friends. While all regions would be too much, It would be nice to get a game with Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh, the four regions based on Japan and allegedly connected physically. I kind of hope they don't do it until they start making good pokémon games again though.
It's great to have you here! I guess we have to wait and see what happens with Legends Z-A. At least, we know it's not being rushed, so that is generally a good sign that they want us to receive a quality product. Regarding the 4 Japan-based regions, that would be an awesome idea. Only time will tell. Thanks a lot for watching!
Not the first place I expected to see CZsworld It's weird that we seem to always comment on similar videos Considering the fact that Nostalgia is a big selling point of pokemon nowadays it would make alot of sense to let us see older regions and how they changed
Guys, whoever want to play a single game with all the five initial regions (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova), you can play PokeMMO. A single game that puts together the first five gens into a single multiplayer experience with freedom to travel between those regions with the same character.
Honestly as cool as ruby sapphire was, they got rid of a lot of the things that made the previous generation so magical. The day and night system, going back to the previous region, battling your former self.. these are things they really should have kept in the games and god knows why they didn’t. I’m always gonna love ruby sapphire for what they were but I think the magic in Pokémon started to die with that generation. Just my two cents
You're right! It could be midnight in Pokémon Emerald or FireRed, and yet the sun would shine (as if the regions were in the North Pole in summer). I think that you should never get rid of mechanics that you know your audience loves, especially when they weren't really a big effort. It was nice to fight a powerful trainer in Emerald, but Steven was the last trainer I would be excited to battle, especially when we did in Ruby and Sapphire. Thank you for commenting. Greetings!
With the Gen 3 games, GameFreak rushed them out for release, which is why they didn't have the time to test out those older mechanics and properly implement them. I still had a blast playing the Hoenn games, but I always felt like there was something incomplete about them. And then you also have to keep in mind that since Gen3 was not compatible with Gen 2 and Gen 1, collecting all 386 Pokemon back then was a nightmare, since you needed a ton of games to do it, and not to mention that many Legendary Pokemon were ToysRUs exclusives, since we never got ways to legitimately get the Key Items to visit the in game island events for a few of those legendary Pokemon, and the GBA still didn't have Nintendo Wifi Connection capability, which is why the Gen4+ games were way better, as you didn't have to go to a specific local event to get some Legendary Pokemon, you could just get them online.
I think, for the sake of the developers, it's better for them to focus solely on the region they're currently working on than to try to include stuff. As much as people like to call TotK DLC because of reuse of the map, developers still had to go back and redo assets and change up the terrain ontop of all the new physics interactions and revamping of how items work they did. To make a whole new region and then have to go back to an old region and change things up in particular ways to make it seem like time has passed is a BIG ask, honestly. And with how much ScarVio looked like crap and ran just as well, I don't want more burden on the devs then there currently is cause, like, it kinda feels like Pokemon is about to fly off the wheels at any moment currently. Now with all that said, it still would be cool to go back and see how things have changed in older regions. That was the thing I loved in Gold/Silver and one of the big aspects I appreciated in TotK, seeing people living their lives and adapting to the changing times. Love to be in a world that feels like it's actually being live in and has the capacity to change.
@@Alex-hongry That would be absolutely terrible for pacing and scaling. For instance, you'd be fighting the first region's champion with base stage or mid stage Pokemon and basic movesets.
@@BlueSparxLPs Alternatively, keep the exp needed to reach level 50-60 the same, then increase the requirements for anything beyond that to the point that you've only gained 5-10 levels after clearing a circuit of gyms, depending on how many regions are included.
I remember thinking how cool it would be for a Pokemon game to have all the regions in it. Then I saw someone make the argument that it would water down the levels a ton in each region and it made more sense.
I think even into the Johto era, my friends and I didn't even knew what the regions were called and just thought it was simply "The Pokemon World" because that's just what was said in the song that goes "We all live in a Pokemon World" 😂
Discovering Kanto in Silver blew my mind and ruined all future pokemon games for me. I loved Hoenn and Sapphire is my fave in the series, but it stung when I realised I couldn’t visit Johto and see what happened after the events of the game and what everyone was up to
Because it would be awesome to have the opportunity to experience the entirety of Gen 1 and then have Johto and everything it had to offer in the after game.
I remember in gen 1 thinking that was all there ever would be. Just 151 Pokemon to entertain ourselves with forever. I figured Togepi wasn't even a Pokemon, just some random animal they found.
When I was a kid, I remember there being some of those online site games where you could basically make a team from eggs, grow them from level one, and eventually fight gym leaders... the problem was, as you mentioned, the level scaling was a problem. If you could bring back old teams from the previous region, that meant the next region would need a level scaling. Aaaaand in fact, yep. As soon as you were halfway through the second region, your team and the remaining gym leaders were all simply level 100, basically turning it in a mono type Battle Tower. Not worth it.
Absolutely, the level factor was always an obstacle for this idea, not unsurmountable, but it would require a lot of careful thought to make this idea work without risking the gaming experience. I think if RSE had access to only Johto would've worked. Greetings!
Even without region revisiting, the level system of Pokemon is just kind of bad. Pokemon has a really good battle system but it's marred by the ridiculous time sink it requires to train a competitive team, and a level 100 cap is a big part of that (in addition to IV and EV breeding). And for the main adventure, the level cap just serves to make the main campaign just too easy by unbalancing trainer and enemy levels. It might sound insane because it's so different to what the games are currently like, but I genuinely think Pokemon should lower it's level cap down to something like 20 and make the gameplay more focused on what attacks you learn and give your Pokemon instead of just being stronger than your opponent because they only want the occasional Gym Leader to be genuinely tough. Aside from being a requirement for evolution, Pokemon simply does not need levels for its gameplay to work and having 100 of them is holding the games back.
Yeah, by the 5th generation I finally realized that they were never going to do this again and stopped expecting it. Especially after Diamond and Pearl didn't have multi-region travel, despite all of the references to past regions in them...
I had a dream that I found the cutscene where you moved (to Viridian City I believe, the story was Norman becoming gym leader) and after being asked to help the Machoke move boxes, you go outside, you and your parents dances to the music, and end with a fist pump in the air.
Sure! That specific one is called Pokémon Shiny Gold. I think there's an improved version called Pokémon Shiny Gold X, but it's basically Pokémon Gold and Silver (Not sure if Crystal) on the FireRed/LeafGreen engine. Have a nice day!
@@RealEisenBerg Pokemon Shiny Gold X is actually just a HARD MODE version of Shiny Gold. I used to play both versions back then. Another one I used to play akin to Shiny Gold is Pokemon Liquid Crystal.
I'd love to see more videos like this. I could listen to you talk about anything pokemon related, for example, a video on the pokemon tower or lore for a specific legendary pokemon.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that these videos are also well-received despite not being icebergs. For sure, more videos like that are coming. Greetings!
I love the concept of revisting old regions, I loved it in heart, gold, and soul silver, which were my favorite games, and I also loved it in the rom hack Pokémon glazed. However, they compatibility that there was in gen 3 where you could play Hoenn in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, but you could also play Kanto in fire, red and leaf green, and they were almost perfectly compatible. Did really speak to me. I think it would be amazing if there were even different games that could communicate with each other so that you could explore the whole world, however the lifespan of the consoles themselves as well as the time required to develop a new game makes this very difficult to achieve...
I liked looking up obvious fake rumors about going to Johto as a kid. One of my favorites being a rumor claiming that Altering Cave contains secret portals to Kanto, Johto, AND the Orange Islands. I would've loved to see an official Johto game on the GBA but as someone who's tried his hand at making Pokemon fangames, it's a meteoric pain in the ass to develop a single region. Even remaking a previous region is a time consuming task. If Game Freak ever decides to try and give us multiple regions in a game that's not a Johto remake, I hope it won't be a gutted version of the region like Kanto was in GSC.
It was very entertatining! The oldest one I remember was that you were able to go to a place called Neon City in Red Blue and Yellow, one year after the S.S. Anne had departed. The PokéGods were also a big thing back then. Greetings!
I love this video. I was lucky enough to have been really little when Pokemon first came out. I went through these same things, since i was 7 ive been dying for a game with all the regions, or at this point even just one old region like gen 2. But gamefreak has lost its integrity and im worried its super likely that theyll never have it again. Hopefully we get new people in there that grew up on the series and actually care what fans want and what made the early games special
I think Game Freak should actually hire people who are hardcore Pokémon fans who really know what the community needs. I think Capcom or Sega has done something similar and it's gone pretty well! Thank you for watching!
I personally think they should have a PC pokemon game where you can play an exclusive region with region specific pokemon and once you become the champion then you can go to a region that has a remake but, you have to pick a starter there and you can't use any pokemon outside of that region until you become champion of that region. Like if you beat region x than you can choose to go to regions in gen 1-4 but, only one at a time until you become champion then you can choose another and you can freely go to a region with any pokemon that you are the champion in. As well as if they add a remake to gen 5 than in a few years they add that to the game as well. Since it is an online PC game than they don't have to worry about hardware restrictions and they can make it a subscription game to pay for the server maintenance. To keep selling Nintendo game consoles they could make the regions in this game have places you can't go (like how gen 2 had cinnabar island) while also having an additional area (like gen 3 had sea foam islands) that had new pokemon in it but if the region only had 150 pokemon (like Kanto) then in this game it will only have 150 in that region as well. Think of it like replacing an old pokeom for a new one and the old one you can only get from transferring from pokemon home once you are champion of that region.
I had this idea about a return to kanto/johto in a pokemon game. Imagine a game where Professor Oak invited you back to Kanto in the present day. Oak at this point is up there in age and with his previous two protégés out he needs someone to compile and updated Pokédex in the region with the updated evolutions since gen 1/2, you pick a starter in Pallet Town and you go on your journey thru Kanto seeing old friends and new rivals, gym leaders have new pokemon teams and stuff, and a rag tag remnant of team rocket exists to fight off. Then you fight an all new elite four and go to johto and repeat. It would be like a Pokémon return to roots and it would be so sick!
3:47 for the exact same reason i worked for more than 12 years on my own ruby rom hack in which I can travel over to both Johto and Kanto and even help in a questline to build up the battle frontier from emerald. My inner child finally found peace.
I'm still waiting for pokemon game with multiplayer and all the regions. We kinda got it but not quite. We'll probably have to wait a few more generations.
Played red in 1999. Gold following year. I completely agree. We want a game with all regions. But its definately because of gold and silver. Maybe one day.
What makes me sad about this is that there's no real barrier keeping GameFreak from doing this today. With the Switch, they have a platform that allows for updates and DLC. There's nothing stopping them from releasing a game set in a previous region, and gradually releasing updates to include new regions as time goes on. They could even charge for each region if they really wanted to; people would easily pay for that. That sort of model would even help get around issues like Dexit; they can take their time producing all the models and animations for each region, instead of having to implement all of them at once.
Assuming they had enough memory in the cartridge, they could've made 3 regions work by reducing the EXP gained in battles: Hoenn up to level 35-40, Johto up to level 60-70, and Kanto up to 100. Another way would've been the "Ash method", forcing the player to reliquish their Hoenn pokemon (temporarily) until they have enough medals in Johto to bypass the level cap, so they have to start over with a starter from that region and collect new pokemon. Then you can repeat the same for Kanto or remove the level cap requisite since this is supposed to be the ultimate challenge.
This reminds me of when i thought you could breed two different Pokémon within the same egg group to get an egg with a different Pokémon in the same group. These games truly were mystical as a child
Couldn’t ot just dynamically scale the levels of trainers based on the level of your highest party member? Scaling up or down to match the individual run?
Technically, yes, but this would be a logistical nightmare - you would need to set up every trainer with dynamic movepools, scale all pokemon, scale all rewards, which would inevitably lead to games that are undercooked - even GSC was severely undercooked and for it the entirety of kanto was just an afterthought. You'd also start seeing massive item bloat or have to redesign everything around a single system of the overworld... And if you do dynamic scaling then the casuals who overlevel pokemon to win wont like it....
This video made me think of the perfect solution to the inevitable problem of how to level scale between a hundred Pokemon gyms in a sensible way. Gyms have different sets of Pokemon, so you register your party to look at your highest level Pokemon, and your average levels between them, to determine which ranking tier the people in the gym use for your challenge.
Im glad i wasn’t the only one who spent countless hours searching for previous regions in gen 3. I think someone told me the rumour that if you complete your trainer card with all stars you’d unlock previous regions. Also in ruby and sapphire that you could talk to the space center guy to get a ticket to space and catch deoxys. I never had emerald but i think that was added in that game? Anyway cool video
This has always been my problem as well. Even as a child, it really annoyed me that the series would pick and choose mechanics and features to implement seemingly at random. Gen two introduced day/night, only for gen three to drop it but have weather? Berry growing seems to improve only to dissappear almost entirely in gen 5? Why? And don't get me started in the gimmicks like Megas, Gigantamax, STUPID FUCKING HATS!
Oh god, the gimmicks suck. Mega Evolutions were fine on their own, don't get me wrong. It would have been fine if they stayed as a mechanic. But then they got ditched for WORSE. Z-Moves were... okay, downgrade compared to Mega Evolutions but there was utility there. Dynamax and Gigantimax were the absolute worst, a pure offensive mechanic that has pathetic defensive or support utility (unlike Mega Evolution and even, to an extent, Z-Moves, which could give Pokemon new roles, buff defensive or support roles, or give access to buffs and healing a pokemon might not have otherwise), and Terastalizing... They don't even include it in Pokemon Masters EX and it's STILL breaking mons in entirely new ways.
Yeah, this might just be an old man talking, but when I played Gold and the NPC stopped me to tell me I was venturing back into the RBY map my 11 year old mind exploded. It was like a surprise I could never have dreamed of. That wonder is nearly impossible to capture today.
With the advancements in A.I. 3D modeling and programming, I’d be surprised if somebody didn’t just make an “all-regions” 3D remake of all the games just because they’ll be able to. Honestly, I give it 3-4 years at most until we see something like that
I remember the elation i felt when I first played Pokemon Silver and having the guy come up to you and welcoming you to Kanto. I had no clue that there was essentially another full game within the game! It is the dist and only time you could visit two pokemon regions in a single game.
I remember doing the same thing after I got Sapphire when it launched. I had no idea about the limitations before getting the game... I was a kid and was expecting this new game to be bigger and to bring all my old Pokemon over. I think my disappointment started when I found out there were no day/night cycles. Time still existed, kind of, but only for berries and a handful of time events. Then I eventually learned that you couldn't trade your old Pokemon from the GB games into the GBA games. I was disappointed, but could accept it as it being a compatibility problem between the GB and GBA. I still kept looking for a way to unlock the other regions doing every nonsensical "cheat" I heard about. I even did the 100 battles in the tower too (I think this started my hatred for battle tower like things in post game, it was so tedious and I never want to do it again). Then I went over to a friend's house who just got internet installed and eventually found out that it doesn't exist. I think this cemented my disappointment with Gen 3 and was kind of my first experience of new games aren't always better. Sounds kind of obvious now, but I was a kid. I eventually traded Sapphire away at school for a copy of Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 and some random Tony Hawk game. A trade I do not regret.
Wow, you brought back memories! I will admit, I did not have that painful experience of searching for a way to get to Kanto or Johto in the days of R/S (I was 7 and couldn’t even beat Glacia of the Elite 4 lol), but (about 4 years later in the days of D/P), I did watch people play Shiny Gold and Silver. I was YEARNING to play through Johto in a Gen 3 format. And that was painful lol, so I can only imagine how you felt. Thank you for this video! Good times
7:48 I love that this version of Kanto of Pokemon Shiny Gold is much different ( like the patches of Grass) because there is more kanto to explore in this version (version 5) than the one you had in while playing with Krys
By the time Gold/Silver came out, there were already a lot of other places people knew about such as the Orange Archipelago and Guyana combined with various places in RBY that included hints towards other places. There was also the island from SNAP...and Stadium (and the Japanese Stadium which was different from the US one which was actually the sequel). Gen2 only expanded things, then Gen3 added 2 regions along with the Sevii Islands (Orre popped up in Coliseum)
I know that on December 25th a Hack called Emerald Extended Cut should be released with Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and the Sevii Islands, I tried the alpha and it seems well done. Just to let you know 🤷🏻♀
Honestly, it is a bit shocking that they never did this again. Like, in a way I guess I can kind of respect them for focusing on building new and expansive worlds in each game and not just relying on the previous maps to make up half the content, but, on the other hand, going back to Kanto was absolutely peak fanservice and, even if the game balance was a bit off, it is definitely one of the coolest aspects of Gen 2. And, with modern data size increases, it would be relatively easy to port a region from one game to another, whole sale if they've been built on similar engines. I haven't bought a Pokemon game since X and Y, they just feel far too samey so many years on, but if they announced in the next game that you could revisit Hoenn in addition to the new region they made then I probably would buy it just to see Hoenn again through a different lenses. Even just going to a portion of a region again would be cool, like imagine a new region where the southern area is called Lake of Rage.
This is something I haven’t really thought about until this video: Instead of bringing old regions like Kanto into the third generation, you just make another series of games as a remake and get double the money. This is how the world works and it makes me pretty sad.
being able to go back to kanto in crystal and hgss was is and probably will forever be my all-time favorite part of any pokemon game. there have been a lot of cool things in these games but none come close to finally going back to the og map, fighting all the gym leaders and eventually fighting red inside or, even better, on the tip of mt silver. the only event/battle that even got close for me was fighting volo and then him busting out giratina, and giratina having a phase 2.
Honestly you can get an idea of what a multiple region pokemon game would be like with the fan made PokeMMO, it is just a bunch of connected Roms but you can carry your pokemon from region to region and play along side randoms and friends.
The biggest reason for all of this I think, is that pokemon has been on the ridiculous time crunch of making a new game every year. Which isnt scaleable to the quality we had back in the 2000s
When I got to go back to the first region in Pokémon gold as a kid.. I was SO excited, I loved that… it’s one thing that still makes gen 2 one of my favorites.. it wasn’t perfect but man, it was awesome!! I have wanted Pokémon to do that again..
the real issue is due to a thing called level balance. Remember when Gen 2/4 gave us Kanto again, and it resulted in people complaining about how their level 40s/early 50s were now getting hit by a youngerster with a lvl 60 pokemon
I spent so much time in Altering Cave thinking it was the key to unlocking a different region. Although the idea of going back to prior regions is now a dream, I think GF could always let us do a tour through a region without requiring battling the Gym Leaders as the mission. I doubt they would ever explore it, but the potential will always be there.
Well i loved the idea that kanto was explorable in gold and silver, but it definitley showed the limitations at the time seeing that kanto seemed pretty much like a ghost town when you eventually do go about exploring it. I wouldnt mind to see how the old towns turned out after all those years
The only way you can have other regions is either level scaling trainers and gyms, or ditch levels all together and go with stat/strat builds. Both are harder to implement but id like to see it one day.
I'd say it depends on how they run it, There have been attempts in the past from unofficial "MMO's" that would use art assets from the game carts (ROM files) to create the world, and the way they did it was things like level capping where your pokemon until you gained a certain badge, and if you transported over a pokemon from another region that you caught, that was higher level than your current level cap in that region, the pokemon wouldn't listen to you. It's not exactly a clean method, but it does work. A better method I think would be to do away with the leveling system as it sits and make it so that the training is based to the stats. So basically instead of the traditional jrpg levling system, it's based on the effort of training. So doing some strength training will boost the stats that would be related to physical prowess of the pokemon. These stats can also be bumped up from a battle. Also having certain trainings boost some stats but lower others could make this more interesting. This would also need a "Use it or lose it" mechanic where these stats could drop down to the base of the Pokemon over time too. So if you "box" a pokemon, it doesn't just sit in your box and stay the way you left it. So that Magikarp you caught and trained up to get to the point where it could evolve to Garados, but them box it up, It's stats will slowly drop until they reach the base stats of a wild magikarp and you will have to do the training all over again. But if you get the Evolve point (however that would be set since there wouldn't be "levels", Garados will stay a Garados and will have base stats that settle to the same level as a standard Garados. This means that you can't just bring out a Legendary that you had boxed up for long periods of time and expect it to battle effectively. The other thing would be a tire out mechanic, where the pokemon would not be able to train or effectively battle further due to their Stamina levels. So your Charizard that you have been running around torching everything with would get tired the more it's relied on to the point where it's Flamethrower becomes no better than an ember instead of going into "Struggle" which shouldn't be as powerful as it was. This Stamina stat would replace the PP pool. and would replenish slowly, by feeding them or taking a rest (the picnic mechanic?) you can reload the Stamina. Also making it so that you can train your trainer, Because I'd bring in the legends games real time combat method with how you could face off against or be attacked by the wild pokemon directly. Now obviously a human isn't going to be able to take on a fully evolved anything. but if you can strengthen your trainer and there be "stamina wheels" involved with dodging, climbing, etc. You could have a trainer that can get to inaccessible areas on their own with enough strength/Stamina. But this would mean that the in game system would have to have a mechanic where your trainer realizes they are to tired to continue and use one of their pokemon to get back down. (oh no, you tried to climb a sheer cliff but only made it a quarter of the way up so you have your Abra get you back down) These ideas aren't well fleshed out, but going this path would produce a more interesting pokemon game that wouldn't need to worry about level caps to make the game harder as you progress. Of course at that point You could have an overly Jacked pokemon that mostly oneshots others (assuming the attack hits) Speaking of attacks hitting or missing, this would require a revamp of the battle mechanic. Perhaps pull in Pokken Tournament mechanics or some form of tactics battle system where you have to be close enough to use a physical attack but a special can hit from a distance.
I do really miss the sense of place and geography that GSC gave us, but I don't want to go to every single region in a single game. I want to travel locally, though, because since Gen 5, everything's felt like disconnected variations on a theme. I feel like Legends Z-A could take us south to Paldea or across the Galar channel with a train or boat ride if it wanted to. I think it would be a really lovely sendoff to the switch generations to feel like you're backpacking across Pokemon Europe. I know the Pokemon world's geography isn't exactly the real world, but mega-regions, whether it's a Europa or a Nihon, where you get to freely travel between up to 4 regions would be ideal. Pokemon doesn't need a fleshed out concept of geopolitics or anything, but like, are Unova and Alola connected at all? I'd be so interested to find out!
Well, I do want an every region game. And so do a lot of other people. If multiple regions is such a problem for others, then they don't have to visit them.
A lot of us were hoping that the DLC for Scarlet and Violet would take us to Kalos because Spain borders on France about where the Paldea map cuts off. It shouldn’t be impossible to make another game with two regions, and let us see what happened to characters we met long ago.
I think it should not be forgotten that, to this day, this game was and is for kids to be finished. Making the game huge and needing you to grind would prevent most from ever finishing it.
Man, I LOVED gen 2! I was crushed when my cartridge's internal battery ran out, and I couldn't save anymore. Gen 3 was great, but I was seriously disappointed that all I got after beating the Elite Four was Battle Tower. No more regions.
A simple way to handle this would be to make new games playable as a new game or as a DLC for your old game where your character save files transfers to the region of the game you're playing on with access to your box via pokemon home. The gym challenges or equivalent thereof could be kept interesting with level restrictions and even regional restrictions to force you to have to use new monsters and lower levels for the various challenges to keep them interesting. The first DLC of Sw/Sh did something like this with the Ursifu quest.
the things i would do, for a gba/ds graphics game with every single region. of course it'd be hard with the newer ones, but people have already made roms of the new regions, so it wouldn't be impossible. the space required would probably make it possible to run on the regular DS line or 3ds, but would easily possible if it was made for the switch. i know it'd be a long and tedious process, but there's no doubt in my mind that it would make a LOT of money, not only from "veterans" who want to re-live their favorite games and enjoy the new ones in the nostalgic graphics style, but also from newer/younger fans that may not have gotten to experience much if at all of the gba/ds graphics.
I had a friend who insisted that the very last Pokémon game Game Freak ever makes (whenever that happens to be) _will_ contain every single region (this same friend also believed that the anime would end with Ash losing all his badges and having to start over from the beginning)
Me personally, while I do agree they should have continued with the trend of visiting the previous region and fighting the previous protagonist at the end, I dont think if they did that in Ruby and Sapphire that they should have included Kanto, but just Johto. The issue where you would be too high of a level by the time you get to Kanto would be a non-issue if Kanto wasn't included. And it would be unreasonable to expect every region to return with each game. As cool as it would be to explore all 9 regions in one game, I would settle for just being able to revisit the previous region in the current generation. I will say gen 8 and gen 9 did kinda scratch the itch with their DLC, even though you arent revisiting a region, you have entire new areas to explore in them that arent the main region of that generation, making the world feel larger than just that one region kinda like how gen 2 did in a way, but not exactly the same. But it would be nice to revisit a region one of these days in a new generation.
I am legit worried about a Gen 5 remake. I used to want one real bad, but I really, really don't trust modern gamefreak to do it justice, especially since it's the only generation with an actual sequel, rather than just an expansion. I don't think it'll be done proper justice...
I just realized that due to the frlg and hgss remakes, you could go back to kanto EVERY SINGLE generation until 5, and we couldnt get kanto again until the Let's go games. There's a lot of sh*/ talked about gen 1, but its where the memories of pokemone were born. Not being able to go back at all for 3 generations straight is actually wild in retrospect.
All I've ever wanted was a region combination of gen 1-4 since on the map they're all Japan. Would be canonically easy enough to travel between and include a solid national dex. More regions vs more 3D. The Carts have the space for it. Balancing the gameplay progression would certainly be a challenge, but who says level 100 needs to remain the cap? :)
Not including Johto/Kanto in Gen 3 was the dick move that got me out of this franchise forever. Seriously, it represents every tiny thing that Game Freak refuse to do in order to respect its fans. "You want the older regions? Give us more money". No. Never gave Game Freak a cent ever again.
Incredible.
And today that doesn't even hold the text of modern Pokémon games. Wild
Even more so! Japanese R/G/B are just 0.5 MiB, and Japanese G/S is 1 MiB. Granted the latter doesn't have animated battle sprites.
And Japanese Crystal used a cartridge that supported 4 mb. The constraint on Gen 2 Kanto was never ROM space.
Pokemon Crystal Clear is a romhack that is open world and has the entirety of Kanto and Johto and you can start in whatever city you want and get every badge in whatever order you want
Just throwing that out there
Odd that it was considered industry standard by today's standards, for sure.
Are the 3 legendaries not themselves the sinnoh ?
@@BillSchrader at the end of the day, Sinnoh Is the friend we made along the way
That game's already huge and had plenty of content within Unova alone. I don't know what else you would've wanted tbh.
Strange that in 2024 we have 80gb games but still is not possible to have a game with all the regions not even with graphics of gba
Maybe it's because we need a cap of what regions, from Kanto to Hoenn? Sinnoh?
It would be easy to sell them as DLC
Most of the space goes to making the game cinematic and detailed. They would have to reduce quality to quantity for that to happen.
Edit 12/27/24: You guys know I don’t make the game right? Lol
If it is possible, it could be split in parts or merged as lock on tech. Or, maybe as DLCs since it isn't possible for them due to having quality in cinematics. But, this is just my speculation.
Pokemmo exist
I kind of get a similar experience exploring kitakami and Blueberry Academy in Scarlet.
And that new world had my favorite NPC in Pokemon. Bye Bye A Go Go
I stopped holding my breath for gamefreak to make good games a long time ago.
As soon you turn into a kid again, gamefreak makes good games again
@@shirakawamaseru implying it's only nostalgia? It's not. Even the games I skipped as a kid were good when I went back and played them as an adult. Many different game series stayed good throughout childhood into adulthood as well. Pokemon did not. It just became a lazier and lazier moneygrab with objectively lower quality and effort over time.

"Honestly, I think this was a good thing, because you had more space for wonder."
Yeah...
Has noone ever read a games manual before? The cipher was on the back page.
@tylerfox5003 I used to read game manuals for fun all the time, guess I somehow missed that or forgot about it.
I too remember the wonder of deciphering Braille to unlock the Regis. Thank you for bringing back the memories.
God be with you out there. ✝️ :)
@Numba003 With you, too.
@@andrewtuell1991you can't tell me the majestic SIX island is unmemorable or THREE island even, what a beauty
I was very hopeful Ruby and Sapphire would have previous regions when I was a kid, especially Johto, which I loved. The fact that FR/LG had Kanto again, and there was a post game, but it was just the Sevii Islands, and not Johto, infuriated me lol
speaking as a johto kid, i never fell in love with RSE like the hoenn kids did. new games didn't grab me until diamond and pearl.
Unfortunately R/S/E didn't even have a day/night cycle.
@@ElliotKeaton Exactly! It felt like such a weird step back, even with new mechanics like natures, stat split, double battles, etc
I remember being excited to see hoenn at night, GSC’s night pallets were a vibe!
Thanks a lot for watching!
what about my plane cutscene to the lumiose airport though :( we need more regions other than those
CZ is here too? I knew I was in the right comment section.
Not the first place I expected to see CZsworld
It's weird that we seem to always comment on similar videos
Considering the fact that Nostalgia is a big selling point of pokemon nowadays it would make alot of sense to let us see older regions and how they changed
Ah, @CZsWorld, I see you're a man of culture as well.
Guys, whoever want to play a single game with all the five initial regions (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova), you can play PokeMMO. A single game that puts together the first five gens into a single multiplayer experience with freedom to travel between those regions with the same character.
I'll up for this!! Just finished raids for the Xmas event 😂❤
Greetings!
Battling your previous character was so great, I don’t know why this didn’t become a staple of the franchise.
Game freak never could just add more to the next games without taking things away, whether or not if it was "necessary".
Agreed
We have to take note of the fact that everytime GF switches up the hardware GBA onwards something goes wrong.
if you're insane enough, you could also raise the level cap to 255, this could give more runway for the levels of the extra gym leaders.
That's a quite good idea!
Or just slow down the exp needed for reaching L100
@@Alex-hongry That would be absolutely terrible for pacing and scaling. For instance, you'd be fighting the first region's champion with base stage or mid stage Pokemon and basic movesets.
@@BlueSparxLPs Alternatively, keep the exp needed to reach level 50-60 the same, then increase the requirements for anything beyond that to the point that you've only gained 5-10 levels after clearing a circuit of gyms, depending on how many regions are included.
@@TheSonicdude98Wouldn't that just kill the pace later on?
I remember thinking how cool it would be for a Pokemon game to have all the regions in it. Then I saw someone make the argument that it would water down the levels a ton in each region and it made more sense.
I think even into the Johto era, my friends and I didn't even knew what the regions were called and just thought it was simply "The Pokemon World" because that's just what was said in the song that goes "We all live in a Pokemon World" 😂
Discovering Kanto in Silver blew my mind and ruined all future pokemon games for me. I loved Hoenn and Sapphire is my fave in the series, but it stung when I realised I couldn’t visit Johto and see what happened after the events of the game and what everyone was up to
I want a two region game that starts in Kanto and ends in Johto
For why
Because it would be awesome to have the opportunity to experience the entirety of Gen 1 and then have Johto and everything it had to offer in the after game.
Infinite Fusion.
So play Crystal Clear. You can start in any city you want in either Kanto or Johto.
@@danangell5482 I did and it was awesome but it’s not as good as if Game Freak did it
What do you mean Ninetales was not in the game?? 5:45
You can catch vulpix in Hoenn
Ugh! Back in the day my cousin, my brother and me also were convinced that generation three would let you go to all three regions. Good times…
Those rumors held something magical, even if they ended up not being true.

So, GF lost their integrity just because they're not adding old regions? Lol
Earliest I've ever caught one of your videos! Love the channel and your content! Thanks so much for another entertaining video 🥰.
Thank you so much, Gwen! I'm glad you love the content. I hope you like the next video too!
So basically Ash in all of the different Pokémon Anime regions.
what I really hate is that you get lost, there is no menu to keep track of the quests that you are supposed to complete
Are you hosting this anywhere?
I'm still waiting for pokemon game with multiplayer and all the regions. We kinda got it but not quite. We'll probably have to wait a few more generations.
Make "Pokemon Generations" first 251 + faves in a new region but in old style graphics but updated kinda.
Played red in 1999. Gold following year. I completely agree. We want a game with all regions. But its definately because of gold and silver. Maybe one day.
Even an "Epcot" of Pokemon would be nice, where you could visit prolific spots from each of the regions and catch Pokemon in their 'safari zones'.
Very nostalgic chill video. Absolutely remember thinking this when Gen 3 came out. That would be a dream remake with all 3 regions in one game huh?
0:23 Sorry the Gamemaster Guide in Germany and the offical Manuals in germany refering all to Kanto
Yeah, this might just be an old man talking, but when I played Gold and the NPC stopped me to tell me I was venturing back into the RBY map my 11 year old mind exploded. It was like a surprise I could never have dreamed of. That wonder is nearly impossible to capture today.
They should make an mmo at this point with every region in existence
you would reach level 100 by the second or third region, and it would kind of just be a battle tower-esque thing at that point.
What are the games you play in that video?
I want a significant post game where I can revisit an old region or something similar
It is the dist and only time you could visit two pokemon regions in a single game.
what is that gen 3 johto footage from?
Just to let you know 🤷🏻♀
7:56 what game is this? it's a crystal rom hack but which one?
That one is Pokémon Shiny Gold X. It uses the FRLG engine. Have a nice day!
Even just going to a portion of a region again would be cool, like imagine a new region where the southern area is called Lake of Rage.
hey, quick question, from which rom is the gameplay of johto in these gba graphics? it looks great!
This is something I haven’t really thought about until this video:
Instead of bringing old regions like Kanto into the third generation, you just make another series of games as a remake and get double the money.
Isn't the Blueberry Academy in the Unova region?
Silver and Gold did the revisiting of previous region thing because first gen games is what started it all, it is the "big success" of the franchise.
6:10 - VERY cool to see Team Rocket's Rockin' mentioned...! I spent HOURS on there as a kid.
Imagine a mod that connects Hisui, to the 'Edo era' of Johto, Hoenn and even Kanto.
Fire Red and Leaf Green are still my favorites. A bit of old with some of the new and quality of life updates. It’s perfect.
(oh no, you tried to climb a sheer cliff but only made it a quarter of the way up so you have your Abra get you back down)
These ideas aren't well fleshed out, but going this path would produce a more interesting pokemon game that wouldn't need to worry about level caps to make the game harder as you progress. Of course at that point You could have an overly Jacked pokemon that mostly oneshots others (assuming the attack hits)
Speaking of attacks hitting or missing, this would require a revamp of the battle mechanic.
Maybe, if we can hope, pokemon will one day have an MMORPG title, where old regions and new ones could be included in the form of patches.
Would you rather Game Freak make it or license it out?
@@ElliotKeaton Perhaps license would be better, as I don't think they have any experience in the MMORPG genre.
Their is a pokemmo
@@blakewaldrop7118 Doubt that's an official one. I recall there once was a Pokemon MMO on PC, but that one was eventually taken down by Nintendo.
Man, I LOVED gen 2! I was crushed when my cartridge's internal battery ran out, and I couldn't save anymore. Gen 3 was great, but I was seriously disappointed that all I got after beating the Elite Four was Battle Tower. No more regions.
Gold/silver looks cursed in gen 3 graphics 🤣
I get what you mean, it's like an uncanny valley but video game version. Still, pretty enjoyable!
Bro what you're looking for is pokemon mmo, which is still running, i think its, gen 1-6 now
Me personally, while I do agree they should have continued with the trend of visiting the previous region and fighting the previous protagonist at the end, I dont think if they did that in Ruby and Sapphire that they should have included Kanto, but just Johto.
It's up to the player to set lower level teams in other regions, all regions are possible, gameplay balance keeps lv100 fun
Best Pokémon game ever will be when Nintendo finally unites ALL Pokémon in one single game... That would be SO amazing
Considering proximity it's a damn shame Gen 8 _DIDN'T_ include a Kalos tour.
Or Gen 9
Great stuff dude, love your content and discussion regarding all this stuff 👌
Thanks a lot! I appreciate this type of videos are also welcome besides my icebergs. Greetings!
Are there mods for this ?
Not including Johto/Kanto in Gen 3 was the dick move that got me out of this franchise forever. Seriously, it represents every tiny thing that Game Freak refuse to do in order to respect its fans. "You want the older regions? Give us more money". No. Never gave Game Freak a cent ever again.
Love your videos! 🎉 keep it up
Thanks a lot, Mike! Greetings!
