Yeah, I didn't know about it either, but with the ATK value of 0 it just means it deals the same amount of damage Mario would deal without a weapon so depending on your level you could still deal a lot of damage with the added bonus of doubling your coins, exp, etc!
If everyone just took the time to scroll down and see "a lucky hammer" and a price of 123 coins, they would have at least tried it out like I did years ago
I am currently playing through Super Mario RPG Remake with my 7 year daughter. She just bought the hammer in seaside town and equipped it because it said it was 'lucky'. Oh to see the world through the eyes of a 7 year old again.........
Cool. I definitely said something was weird about it and purchased it anyway. In 1993. But I hated playing the lucky eggshell game so I didn't like it at all and ended up reselling it lol
I was one of the few kids who noticed the difference and, on a lark, bought the damn Hammer to see what was so lucky about it. When I realized I could farm coins and EXP very fast with this, I told all of my friends and all the guys at school were like OMG DUDE YOURE A WIZARD. Good times.
It’s pretty OP when you have the game on the virtual console: create a save state during the lucky game before you choose. Get it wrong, load the save state.
How the hell is a profile of a Pokemon triggering to survivor's of what ever CSA is, idk what that is but I know its not involved with Pokemon for sure.
so I actually did notice the hammer when I played as a kid and even remembered the old description of the original hammer and knew that this was different despite that I never even attempted to buy it just cause stats were all I cared about as you play rpgs you quickly figure out that stats aren't everything a good ability can be better than a stat so despite noticing pigheadedness kept me from trying it despite how good it was
Wiki has been corrected to change the attack value of the hammer, thanks for pointing that out. And for pointing out that this hammer even exists, because I never would've bought it.
I knew about the lucky hammer since I noticed its description was different from the original hammer. But I didn't really think anything of it because, even though it had the potential to double my winnings, I didn't feel any need to max out my level and was never worried about running out of coins by the second half of the game. Oddly enough, though, I swapped out the masher for the apparently weaker super hammer in some fights. I didn't understand why at the time, but I noticed that the masher had incredibly random attack damage sometimes weaker than the super hammer, so I was willing to sacrifice the extra boost the masher provided when I just wanted reliable damage numbers. Every weapon in the game apart from Mario's lucky hammer has an invisible power variable that randomly varies attack damage. For most weapons, that variable is equal to plus or minus a tenth of the weapon's attack boost. For the masher, lazy shell, and frying pan, however, that variable is much larger, being ±30 for the masher. Thus, while the masher is capable of dishing out attacks more powerful than the next weapon up, it's a gamble, and my bad luck made it an unreliable choice in boss fights-particularly against Johnny when I went into the 1 on 1 fight not thinking about how that fight got triggered. Switching to the super hammer gave me more confidence in that situation since bad luck couldn't hold me back.
Yeah was gonna say, it didn't help much that my people when I first played SMRPG were at crazy levels, because I got stuck at Marrymore cuz I didn't trade the special coin.. thing.. for a cricket pie for frogfucius, and was stumped again on the sunken ship password lol
@@adventureoflinkmk2 I never bothered with the minigames for the sunken ship password, nor did I look it up online. I deduced the answer with pen and paper, and I still remember it today. I'm not telling just so I don't spoil it for anyone :)
@@autobotstarscream765 You could say that Square was rewarding players who did not button mash with the lucky hammer, while at the same time agonizing the button mashers with, well, the Masher.
I once brought it out of pure curiosity, and my dad said that I was stupid to spend 100 coins on a Hammer. Turns out, I got lucky. However, I didn’t main it. That was unlucky for it.
I knew it was different at first, since I always kept/keep the original hammer. But even after printing a "Secrets" page at the library, I ignored the effect since I never won the minigame.
Even the 1996 Nintendo players guide makes no mention of it in the seaside town section. It is listed separately in the weapons catalog in the very back, with a description, "Lucky appears if timed right." That's it. No fanfare or notable mentions in the text section of the guide, just a listing in the weapons index. I have owned the SNES game and the original paperback guide for over 27 years, and still missed this until today.
Now on Mario RPG Remake for switch the item is called Lucky Hammer. Pretty good to farm, but the yoshi mini game turn to be tiresome after around 30min of battling.

Excellent for people who casually play through games and probably don't care but... This video just screams, "Hi, here's a video about something everyone knows and is incredibly obvious and not obscure at all!" Excellent video, I liked it, but... I thought everyone knew about that hammer. You know what I didn't know about for the longest time? Grate Guy's Casino. That legit was a real mystery for quite some time without strategy guides! (Also, the guides of the day including the early internet never mentioned it.) I used to have dreams of finding it only to ever wonder if you could even get there...

With the remake out this popped up in my recommended again and they changed the name of it so they could avoid this situation again. It's now called the Lucky Hammer.
And now that you can see stat changes with items and see how much of a downgrade is, with how joke heavy the game is players who don't know about it might just see a weak hammer being sold at a high price and assume its just another joke
I thought this would be about the monster masher, the hammer in booster tower that I always missed. When I got it I was so confused because it just reuses the hammer animations.
The Masher seems to be a controversial topic. Some grab it every playthrough and swear by it while others skip it in favor of buying other equipment later.
@@autobotstarscream765 I don't see any reason to pass it up, personally. It's easy to obtain (for free, no less), boosts your attack, and is as strong as the Troopa Shell you can't get until quite a bit later. I don't see a downside. Even if you don't want to use it, you can at least sell it.

As a kid I sold the original hammer and discovered that I couldn't find it in shops until I came across this one. Bought it, thought it was okay and stopped using it. Always great hearing about somebody discovering something they didn't know about in this game! Good on you, man! I hope you find many more things in this beautiful game.
I actually appreciate this from the perspective of a heads up to new players of the series. This is my first time playing, and if the text isn’t changed in the remake, I know I would’ve looked over it for sure.
I didn't know about it until I watched a 100% TAS of Super Mario RPG where the TAS obviously used it on every encounter to get max EXP out of it to force level all characters with as minimal encounters as possible.
I didn't realize people missed this. I always check descriptions, so when I realized the description was different, I bought the hammer to see what it did. The damage was terrible, but Lucky was too good to pass up, so as long as everyone else in the party could take the enemies down, I left it on Mario. Lucky Jewel automatically guarantees Lucky ten times before breaking, and you can't get another one after that, so that hammer helps out a ton. On that same note, the Happy set of clothing has a similar description, but I never really noticed any difference in getting a Lucky Flower from wearing them.
I vaguely recall wondering why it was in the shop and had a weird description. This is great! One of those games you could complete and explore like crazy as a kid!
Woooooooow man! I remember that very clearly, I didn't buy that hammer either, for the same reason, I definitely will remember that when I play it again on my SNES classic, thank you for this my friend.😃👍😎
I actually found this out on my own because I took it upon myself to collect every unique item while playing through the game. Sadly, there isn't enough inventory space to collect one of every item in the game, so I had to settle for the next best thing and to my surprise, I found out that the hammer from the beginning of the game was one of a kind even though there was a purchasable item with the same name.
I haven't played Mario RPG yet, so I can't watch the video yet. But Recenty I've been doing a 10hp run of Paper Mario TTYD. And I found a hidden gem badge I've always overlooked! FP Drain! FP Drain gives you -1 damage, but every attack gives you 1 FP. So, you can use badges like Power Smash/Jump for free! Or any other attack that only uses 1 FP. So if I basically use Power Smash as my default attack, I'm actually doing 1 more damage than a base hammer attack for free. And if I do start running low on FP I can restore it at the cost of a small damage reduction. I think Paper Mario has a ton of potential for different metas, that are easy to skip over in a more balanced run. I also think if you are willing to grind a bit more, Badge Power is objectively the best stat you can level into, because you can use HP Plus/FP Plus badges for 3 badge points, which is how much you gain per level up. ...Just thought someone might find this interesting lol.
I do "Constant Danger Mario" runs. Only putting points into FP and more often BP. After getting full control of Bobbery I locate Chet Rippo and take points from HP to BP bringing me down to 5. Then load up 3 pretty lucky's (there's a method), close call's, defend plus's, last stands's, (lucky day if you've done the pit to level 90- or won the lottery which works by number of days), and a insane amount of power rush's (Pianta Parlor). You WILL have enough BP if you never increased HP. If you are still unsure you can equip a P-down D-up for extra defense and damage dodge. To up your attack I'd use jumpman with spike shield (and ice for fire enemies). Mega rush can work, but I rarely get down to 1 HP with my method. Also if you ever need extra HP there's always a HP Plus badges. The important part is stacking the power rush's. You can deal 50 or more every attack. I only did it for fun, not because I'm a bad player.
@@Itosalix Right, I read about this! I heard you can do kind of the same thing but stacking Close Call badges instead, and Mario just dodges everything! That sounds amusing lol. My end goal is to have a save before The Pit of 100 Trials. Then just try all kinds of different strats/badge combos, and see how far I can make it. I'm just about to enter the 1000 Year Door now. 10hp has been really fun! It doesn't completely break the game, but I get to use basically all the FP attacks I want! And battles become a puzzle of how to eliminate all the enemies in the fewest number of turns possible. I'm also using Hammer Man cause that's how I roll. Out of curiosity though, do you know if there is a cap on the number of badges you can hold? I figured if I ever did need more health, I could just get a bunch of HP Plus from Pianta Parlor. If I remember right they have them.
@@slapbass9125 Yeah, they have them at the Parlor (but it's a lot of tokens for one, if memory serves). The ones you find laying around should be enough. I don't know what the cap is for badges, probably just the total number that exists. And I'm not sure if there's a cap for stackables, but a few don't have an added benefit after a point. I only use Jumpman because you get the boot upgrades before hammer upgrades and can jump on any enemy. But I understand the cool hammer attacks. I switch out Jumpman for Hammer man when I need to use something like quake hammer or the like.
@Otacon464 That sounds like an excellent idea. -Forward air is like Marios, but Geno fires off Hand canon launch for a stronger spike hitbox. -Back Air is Piranha Plants. -Down air is Mega Man Down air -Up air is Mii Gunner -Jab is like Star Rod Jab, but will guarentee stun for a few frames to lead into combos. -Up Smash is Samus, but lower. -Side Smash is Samus, but lower -Up tilt is similar to Mario -Down tilt is like ROB, but has shorter hitbox and is a small kick. -Forward tilt is a thrust of Geno's arm canon, decent range, being similar to that of Luigi's Forward Smash. -Forward Smash is Mii Gunner's -Down Smash doesn't hit behind, but matches Geno's other Smash Attacks. Basically a Faster version of Snake's Down Smash, but weaker to compensate. Specials Each have a timing mechanic, which can provide added bonuses -Up Special Is Geno Boost, but it doesn't work like in Mario RPG, instead, it Boosts him up to heights. Timing mechanic implimented into move, and getting correct timing (5 frame window after 10 frame animation) raises recovery height and speed and also boosts Attack for short period (5 Seconds after move completion) and invunrability for duration of move (2 seconds). Can be aimed like Jokers. -Neutral Special Is Geno Beam, Geno Charges a beam, once fully charged (Stars go away) stops charging. If you can time a button press to the completion of the charge (Stars vanish, 4 frame window), it deals more damage. Every star is a checkpoint to release, and if you hit B when one appears, but before the next appears (Second Long Window), Geno will release charge immediately, for decreasingly less damage from full charge. (Heirarcy: -No Charge (1/2 second window), Fox Laser. -Stage one (One Star) similar to Robins Stage one Electric attack -Stage 2 (2 Stars), Moderate Laser, After echo exists for a second. -Stage 3 (3 Stars), Moderate Large Laser. Ever played as Daroach in Kirby Star Allies? Geno's Stage 2 and 3 Lasers are similar to Daroaches laser charge, but don't freeze. 2 seconds of screen time. -Stage Four (Fully Charged, no timing) Fires of a Powerful Laser, Similar in speed to Thoron from Robin's Moveset. Multi hit. -Perfect (Fully Charged, Timed) Hits for 4/3 damage of Stage 4, every hit.) -Side Special is Geno Whirl, Double Damage if you time the connection with the opponent. Only one can be on Screen. -Down Special is Geno Burst (Original move) Star energy bursts forth from Geno, acting as a counter/reflector, but unique in that you have to hit B again to return the damage. Absorbs one attack, but if it fails to absorb anything or you don't return the hit properly, very punishable. If it reflects, you have to time the hit of the projectile. This would make Geno the only Mario Character with a counter of any kind. -Final Smash: Geno Blast. Geno charges energy and fires it into the sky, where it begins raining down on the stage. Devastating, so long as you are hit by it, can't go through 2 layers of stage (Two solid Platforms) Throws are standard, but Up throw is similar to Fox's. Pummel is Geno smacking the opponent with his arm canon. -Up taunt is Geno's victory animation. Dodges are Geno de-possessing the Geno Doll, and shifting it along with his power if they are Directional. I actually had quite a bit of fun brainstorming ideas for Geno's Moveset, which mind you are just that: Ideas. The exact movements won't be perfect, and the moveset won't be identical to him if it makes it into the game, but this is what I've come up with. Oh and I ain't no Nintendo Insider, this isn't an actual moveset. Just Ideas for a potential moveset.
@Otacon464 It's true to the game, because quite easily, Arm _canon._ Forward air is a needless copy, but K-Rool and Banjo have very similar movement to Mario's so who really cares. Besides, Funny Arial is Funny, Has always been funny, and Will always be funny. Plus it would be interesting to have a unique movement where it can carry opponents straight into Down air, giving Geno something of an Input Move. Believe it or not, most of the Tilts, Smashes and Air attacks I selected are based from the "Standard" attacks Geno has from Mario RPG, with a bit of leniency to them. Even Fox Up throw was selected for this exact reasoning. He fires of either his Arm or Bullets from his arm, and this is reflected within the movements, The explosions are from his age (hand misfires and explodes,) and Down air is mostly carried by Gravity anyway (I should add that it's not a spike, unlike Megamans) I forgot Neutral Air, so here it is now: Same as either Ivysaur or Samus, take your pick. Ivysaur because of Geno's cape, Samus because Arm Canon.
I did not know about it, but I have a magazine strategy guide for the game kept in good condition. Its incredibly rare and might host some secrets not commonly known like this one.
I actually found this out a number of years ago by mistake. After playing through SMRPG in one sitting, I realized that the description for the Hammer Bros' Hammer was different from the Lucky Hammer. After looking it up, I found the exact thing that is described in this video. It's interesting to know that there are gems like this still semi-hidden in a game that's 24 years old.
i'd like to share something interesting i noticed myself. a shop in the town of Moleville sells an armor item called "work pants". this type can be worn by any character (very rare) and gives a +5 speed bonus (unique)! BUT, it also has a very low defence boost. BUT, i noticed that it actually gives a better defence than most items that Bowser can wear! in fact, you won't find anything better for Bowser until that shop inside the volcano!
Lol I did a 100% shop playthrough in 2004 when I found a copy of this game again and figured tjat was knowledge I missed in the 90's. Kudos for spreading your discovery!
I never bought it in the original either. They renamed it to "Lucky Hammer" in the remake though, so I finally knew about it! (though definitely not at the time this video came out)
I was JUST playing through the game for the first time, and I noticed that the description looked cool, so I bought it and found out what it was through intuition and of course trying it. Very neat, but I'll just hold it in my inventory for now.
I never played the first Mario RPG game, but I’ll remember to pick that hammer up the next time Square Enix & Nintendo decide on a remake for this game.
I had the official strategy guide and I didn't know this. This is the first new thing I've learned about my favorite game of all time in I don't know how long, years. Very cool, thanks for the vid
totally overlooked this for the exact reason he suggested. I was more concerned with how the hell was I ever going to defeat Culex, eventually I caved and found a guide telling me to use different bombs.
I'm pretty sure I knew about this via a strategy guide...but being a kid at the time, and since the game is on the easy side for an RPG and you didn't need to grind for much of anything, I had more or less ignored the Lucky Hammer and never used it as intended.
41 yo, beat the hell out of my cart since my youth burnt it out when I reached my teens and I've never bothered to check that hammer.... Definitely a new one for me.
I seem to recall getting very "lucky" quite often with Mario later in the game in one playthrough and something about battle spoils doubling. But this was 15 years ago so I can't say for sure. I may have had a strategy guide mention it if so.
I've been watching UA-cam videos about Mario Rpg since the remake was announced and I am impressed at how much I actually knew about most of this stuff back when I was a kid. I think this is one of the very few rpgs that I 100% and found every secret ( super suit, secret frog coins, bellhoper, lucky hammer). If my memory doesn't fail me, I think i got to lvl 99 on every character. Only things I am learning is the localization changes.
I learned about it a month ago thanks to the randomizer. Got a hammer with decent stats on it that kept giving me lucky. Thought it was a custom effect due to the randomizer.
this is genuinely something new for me. I mean... I knew there were some things I hadn't gotten (ie, the jump rewards) but I assumed it was junk as well.... now I need to get the game again for this lol.
I remember buying it based on the description. This was towards endgame, and I wanted to just waste money because I had jumped for 999 coins in the gold box. I figured I'd buy all the old items I had sold. Then I decided to do a playthrough of the factory with the first weapons you normally get, so the weak ones. The Hammer making "Lucky!" appear was unexpected, but I also hate the Lucky game in the SNES version. Never could tell and usually lost big time. On the Switch version I can always find Yoshi now, so I will take it lol.

But I rarely used it, or experimented with it in my playthroughs. Thus, I knew it was a unique and different hammer, but didn't completely understand it's benefits. That's because I almost always opted to give Mario the weapon with better attack power instead.
I noticed, even as a kid, there was something different about it with its description. For that reason, I tried it out to see what it did and then proceeded to farm Dry Bones in the sunken ship for Exp.
one thing which is really hidden in the game is the "super armor", which as far i remember, there's no dialogue about it, and yet you can get in the game. monster town has a npc which bet a item with you for 30 jumps on super jump, which neat you a "jump scarf", only for mario with +30 stat, even in speed. but with you go over and hit *100* jumps on super jump, he gives another item. the "super amor" +50 stats even on speed.
I had no idea about this! My thoughts were exactly as you laid out in the video. I assumed it was the hammer you first acquired and thought nothing more of it!

I am currently playing through Super Mario RPG Remake with my 7 year daughter. She just bought the hammer in seaside town and equipped it because it said it was 'lucky'. Oh to see the world through the eyes of a 7 year old again.........
That's insane, I replay it every single year and never even in my adulthood would I ever think of purchasing it.
Since you replay it every year is there a way to store items In this game? If yes where?
Aye if you play every year you gotta play a different way everytime to keep it a little fresh

@MultiTarded Tru
Yes yes yes
I was one of the few kids who noticed the difference and, on a lark, bought the damn Hammer to see what was so lucky about it. When I realized I could farm coins and EXP very fast with this, I told all of my friends and all the guys at school were like OMG DUDE YOURE A WIZARD. Good times.
It’s pretty OP when you have the game on the virtual console: create a save state during the lucky game before you choose. Get it wrong, load the save state.
You talk like it’s hard to get it right.
In the remake of the game, they actually changed the name of this hammer into the “Lucky Hammer”
The second i got that hoe it was glued to mario's grubby little italian sausages and capped out my money counter
Probably to make sure it’s not forgotten
Please change your pfp. It's very triggering to survivors of CSA.

so I actually did notice the hammer when I played as a kid and even remembered the old description of the original hammer and knew that this was different despite that I never even attempted to buy it just cause stats were all I cared about as you play rpgs you quickly figure out that stats aren't everything a good ability can be better than a stat so despite noticing pigheadedness kept me from trying it despite how good it was
To be fair, the description was very vague
Geez man, use some punctuation
@@Echidneys i didn't even realize that I read all of that without stopping once, you're right, he needs some punctuation
Wiki has been corrected to change the attack value of the hammer, thanks for pointing that out. And for pointing out that this hammer even exists, because I never would've bought it.
I did, and i decided not to use it afterwards cuz I saw it lowered my attack in the equip menu
I like it when I find out something new about a game I've known for 20 years.

I knew it was different at first, since I always kept/keep the original hammer. But even after printing a "Secrets" page at the library, I ignored the effect since I never won the minigame.
Ah memories. Printing gaming sheets at the library. Good times.
This is one of my favorite games of all time and I had no idea this was a thing
Even the 1996 Nintendo players guide makes no mention of it in the seaside town section.
It is listed separately in the weapons catalog in the very back, with a description, "Lucky appears if timed right."
That's it.

I was A sucker for secrets when the game came out so I've known about this for a long time.
yup, i'm part of the masses whom thought it was the old hammer just brought back for nostalgia. just to show us how many weapons we've gone through, sorta like a museum of sorts.
This might come in handy for me now as i'm replaying this game and have never known about this
I did notice the description was different! But I never used it... Didn't know about its hidden feature though! :D
So I used to make heavy use of this item as a kid, but like everything else, once I got the Lazy Shell I stopped caring about anything else. :-P
I wished they secretly tweaked all the old weapons like the hammer, make that item shop actually useful

@@kenhollis6197 Yeah you don't have to replace the Masher all the way until after Land's End, which is a long time. It's not "controversial" in any way it's a great upgrade for it's time that you'd have to be lazy to pass up.
Funnily enough, it's renamed as the Lucky Hammer is the remake.
I was a "lucky" kid back then...
I have this game it’s really fun
30 years later I learned about the hammer and the sleep sheep thing
I learned about the lucky hammer from the Open Randomizer, so pretty recently.
On that same note, the Happy set of clothing has a similar description, but I never really noticed any difference in getting a Lucky Flower from wearing them.
in the remake there is no "Second Hammer". The version in the remake is now correctly named 'Lucky Hammer' But keeps the description
I never even knew this game existed in all honesty
I vaguely recall wondering why it was in the shop and had a weird description. This is great! One of those games you could complete and explore like crazy as a kid!
Wow. I never knew of this. Nice find. Will definitely pick it up when I play through SMRPG in the future.
24 years later, this game has enough content to still blow my mind! I had no idea about this item... and I thought I was a completionist... silly me!
“Once a new and more powerful weapon has been obtained, it honestly doesn’t make sense at all to hold onto the old ones”
*awkwardly raises hand*
Who else is super stubborn about selling original equipment off?
Lots of games don't give you a way to get that stuff again.
"Geno for smash"
Otacon464 mess around with how the attacks work, duh.
@Otacon464 Doesn't matter if they are split into a moveset.
@Otacon464 That sounds like an excellent idea.
-Forward air is like Marios, but Geno fires off Hand canon launch for a stronger spike hitbox.
-Back Air is Piranha Plants.
-Down air is Mega Man Down air
-Up air is Mii Gunner
-Jab is like Star Rod Jab, but will guarentee stun for a few frames to lead into combos.
-Up Smash is Samus, but lower.
-Side Smash is Samus, but lower
-Up tilt is similar to Mario
-Down tilt is like ROB, but has shorter hitbox and is a small kick.
-Forward tilt is a thrust of Geno's arm canon, decent range, being similar to that of Luigi's Forward Smash.
-Forward Smash is Mii Gunner's
-Down Smash doesn't hit behind, but matches Geno's other Smash Attacks. Basically a Faster version of Snake's Down Smash, but weaker to compensate.
Specials Each have a timing mechanic, which can provide added bonuses
-Up Special Is Geno Boost, but it doesn't work like in Mario RPG, instead, it Boosts him up to heights.
(Heirarcy:
-No Charge (1/2 second window), Fox Laser.
-Stage one (One Star) similar to Robins Stage one Electric attack
-Stage 2 (2 Stars), Moderate Laser, After echo exists for a second.
Multi hit.
-Perfect (Fully Charged, Timed) Hits for 4/3 damage of Stage 4, every hit.)
-Side Special is Geno Whirl, Double Damage if you time the connection with the opponent.
Devastating, so long as you are hit by it, can't go through 2 layers of stage (Two solid Platforms)
Throws are standard, but Up throw is similar to Fox's.
@Otacon464 It's true to the game, because quite easily, Arm _canon._
Forward air is a needless copy, but K-Rool and Banjo have very similar movement to Mario's so who really cares.
He fires of either his Arm or Bullets from his arm, and this is reflected within the movements, The explosions are from his age (hand misfires and explodes,) and Down air is mostly carried by Gravity anyway (I should add that it's not a spike, unlike Megamans)
I forgot Neutral Air, so here it is now: Same as either Ivysaur or Samus, take your pick.
Ivysaur because of Geno's cape, Samus because Arm Canon.
@Otacon464 Sakurai made even piranha plant to a fighter so I don't think that Geno would be a problem either
Speaking of mario rpg I found something completely ridiculous and off topic mario rpg related things

Huh, I was half expecting you to say it’s the same hammer Mario used as a baby or something
Wow, this is the first secret video for Super Mario RPG that was something i didn't already know that i think I've ever seen since the game came out!
i'd like to share something interesting i noticed myself.
a shop in the town of Moleville sells an armor item called "work pants".
this type can be worn by any character (very rare) and gives a +5 speed bonus (unique)!
(though definitely not at the time this video came out)
I had no idea about this either! I thought i completed mario RPG fully as well. Thats amazing!
Cute piggy 😁
By the time I got there, I didn't need the extra boost/help.
I was still a child when I was playing this game but I wasn't so young that I'd miss the Lucky Hammer.
It's essential for a low level game
Or if you're playing without armour or accessories and trying to max out stats on weaker enemies.
Still learning new facts about these classic games is mind blowing to me. ive played and beat this game at least 3 times and never knew this.
41 yo, beat the hell out of my cart since my youth burnt it out when I reached my teens and I've never bothered to check that hammer.... Definitely a new one for me.
its now labeled LUCKY HAMMER in the middle of the menu not end..too many ppl missed it 1st go round lol
I had no idea! And I had played this game so many times that I can visually play it from start to finish in my head.
I seem to recall getting very "lucky" quite often with Mario later in the game in one playthrough and something about battle spoils doubling. But this was 15 years ago so I can't say for sure. I may have had a strategy guide mention it if so.
I just did another replay of the game and I never realized that hammer had any use. That's hilarious!
Greatest epic game i ever played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it comes to the Nintendo switch hopefully.
I never knew about this. I’ll have to give this a another play through sometime and buy that hammer!
Mario RPG is freaking awesome, man. I got it from a neighbor for $1 back in the day because he didn’t like RPGs or understand that bowser’s castle in the beginning wasn’t the end of the game 😂 I had such a blast playing it when I was like 13 in the early 2000s.
And yeah man, how in the world would they expect anybody to fork up all the coins with a vague description and old name like that? Ugh

Great video, always in the search to learn more about Mario RPG. I will be coming back for more
Actually yes, I did notice the lucky hammer back in the 90's when playing the game... I figured it had a special use that was a trade-off for being weaker. But I rarely used it, or experimented with it in my playthroughs. Thus, I knew it was a unique and different hammer, but didn't completely understand it's benefits. That's because I almost always opted to give Mario the weapon with better attack power instead.
I never knew this so thanks for sharing SwankyBox
Great video! Thanks! Now that the remake is out, I imagine many people getting this video recommended.
I assumed it was the hammer you first acquired and thought nothing more of it!
congradulations on finding a secret I didn’t know about in the game, that’s awesome
I never sell my old gear when I play RPGs. I also try to buy all the equipment
The soundtrack alone from this game screams nostalgia to me. One of my favorite games for sure!
“The gimmick hammer that isn’t actually useful at all and also every kid with the player’s guide knew about it.”
I find it pretty crazy that this game didn’t show stat changes for equipment in shops. Even at the time this was a pretty standard thing for most RPG's. Definitely a blunder on Square's part.
