A similar thing happened when a soviet sub near Cuba was attacked with depht charges because it refused to surface, but the officer Archipov prevented the nuke launch (edited)
@@laszu7137 That's exactly what they would NEVER do. No boomer skipper would ever launch nuclear weapons without direct orders from the powers that be. And at least in American subs, they couldn't even if they wanted to. They need a coded transmission authorized by the President to allow that to happen. If that transmission is jammed, well, too bad, they don't launch. But that's the precaution that America takes to prevent any unauthorized use of the weapons. (At least this is what we're told.)
@@RedSiegfried In the USSR, the final decision on the launch in the absence of external instructions remained with the officers, while such instructions could only contain a launch request, but not a launch ban (in order to avoid betrayal or interception of the communication channel). It was believed that the enemy could destroy or capture command centers or points of contact with a surprise strike, but even then there had to be a guarantee of nuclear response.
For those interested in knowing the plot of the film I will make a summary without spoilers. The story begins in the late 1980s, in this world Ronald Regan's Star Wars project is a success (although the president’s name isn’t Reagan and the project doesn’t have the same name), the United States has achieved the supremacy of the space with your new weapon. The Soviets, feeling threatened and wanting to obtain the technology, kidnap the chief scientist of the project, the American government locates the scientist in a Soviet submarine and sinks it with a nuclear depth bomb. From that moment on, the focus is divided between the Soviet and American government with both sides trying to anticipate the opponent's movement and overcome their internal fights. Mikhail Gorbachev for many reasons ends up virtually without power which allows a member of the government (probably from the KGB) to take control of the country. He then sets in motion his plan to attack first and secure the position of the Soviet Union as the most powerful country on Earth. All it took for a war to start was a small slip, which obviously happened ... This is a great summary, it still has a lot of story to tell, in my opinion a positive point of the film is to show the psychological suffering and finally the loss of hope of the characters when they witness and fight in the war. In that sense the secondary characters are much more interesting than the main ones. The main story is slow and boring in many ways, mainly due to the lack of action, but it has philosophical and sentimental moments that compensate for this slowness and help to create an interesting atmosphere.
Good summary, only nitpick is it probably wouldn't be Gorbachev who was envisioned as the Soviet leader at the time of production as he didn't assume power until 1985 and even then he wasn't expected as he was a rather left-field pick by the Politburo. I think the film was going on the assumption it would either be a Gromyko or Andropov-like leader - sceptical of the West's intentions but not fully hostile like the hardline Soyuz faction (who Bugarin likely represents in this movie) led by Yegor Ligachev. Hence why the Soviet ambassador is baffled by the Politburo's behaviour when the President demands a meeting following Bugarin's coup. Still, you summed the film up brilliantly!
