I find it interesting that in the west bands like Scorpions made songs like Winds of Change, with a very naive perspective of the changes that were happening in Eastern Europe. While instead bands like Kino were telling how actually things were.
Since most of the West consider "the changes" a good thing and have little to non understanding of the impact and the after match which makes millions suffer
The Scorpions had a viewpoint from a post-imperial mostly stable, dependable, predictable western world, while Kino, DDT, Aquarium wrote their best songs in the 80's, in that period of the late Soviet empire when the empire lingered but nobody in it was really interested in keeping it alive, kind of waiting how it would all pan out, would it survive or transform or what, so the songs reflected that mix of hope and fears, desire for change and anxiety. I'd say, each band mirrored its surroundings.

Last week, I experienced what was probably the best musical moment of my life. We were in Prague at a concert featuring the music of the band Kino, accompanied by the Czech Symphony Orchestra. The event took place in the Hybernia Theatre. Right from the entrance, you could hear mostly Russian and Czech being spoken, but also a lot of Ukrainian. People of all generations were there, from preschool-aged kids to elderly folks with walking canes. The dress code was all over the place. Some showed up as proper Russian slavs in full Adidas tracksuits, while others came in full suits with ties and vests. Honestly, none of us knew what to expect from this concert. It was the European premiere, there had been no major promotion, and very little information was available. But we didn’t need any of that - just knowing that we’d get to hear Kino’s songs in a symphonic arrangement was more than enough. After taking our seats in the hall, we were a bit surprised to see electric guitars and a microphone set up at the center of the stage. We had expected purely symphonic instrumentals. Then, all the musicians came on stage, and at the front stood a frontman with Viktor’s iconic white acoustic guitar. I have to admit, I was a bit worried about how it would all sound. But it only took a single verse of the opening song, Zvezda po imeni Solntse, and we were completely blown away. The intonation, cadence, timbre of the voice, the emphasis on the pronunciation of the final syllables in each line - it felt like listening to Viktor himself. I immediately had tears in my eyes and goosebumps all over. And that was nothing compared to what the violins, the rumble of the trumpets and double basses, the dozens of symphonic instruments, and the two female backing singers brought to all those familiar songs. It was absolutely epic. The concert lasted over two hours. After the first hour, the entire theater was on its feet, singing, clapping, with many people standing in the aisles just to dance. Every song was rewarded with a minute of standing ovation before they could even start the next one. Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs - everyone was united in perfect harmony under the tones of Kino, without worry, without animosity, under the shared banner that is Viktor Tsoi. I’ve been to dozens of concerts in my life, but this was truly the crowning moment of my musical journey. It completely exceeded all my expectations.

Я помню этот ужас в 90-е годы. В городе(!)люди садили очистки с ростками от картофеля, прямо у многоквартирных домов, чтобы хоть что-то поесть. Зимой отопление еле-еле, чтобы только не лопнули батареи в -30. Свет вырубался постоянно, сидели со свечками. Денег на работе не платили по полгода, пекла лепешки из муки и воды и пили чай из шиповника. Уже столько лет прошло, но до сих пор отвращение к шиповнику, стоит этот вкус поперёк горла.

@Jar Head you have a very diluted vison on what really happened here. Yes, america is bad and everyone knows that, but this was an entire country collapsing and rising in corruption and anarchy. But one video doesnt do this time period in eastern europe justice. Yes, Chicago is bad, but at least you wont get kidnapped and held at gunpoint for ransom for your own government to pay since they cant do anything to protect you.

Being Bulgarian born after the change has already happened in my country and in USSR as well, I can only imagine the shock and utter desperation that millions of people, fellow slavs from the Eastern Block have sufferred. This song and the perfect video montage helps me to better understand and feel the dramatism of a world that was falling appart literally around them. Of course the young generations back then (my parents for example) were quite optimistic about this change, but 90s just brought crisis and crime - organised crime all over Eastern Europe. Some countries manged to come out of the perestroika stronger and with better quality of life for their people, like Poland and Hungary for example. Others like Russia suffered a lot, took a giant blow, lost territories and half of its population from the split of the USSR, but still manage to continue and stay relevant 30 years later. My country Bulgaria has lost 1/3 of the population that was living in the country before the change. It happened without a war, without a bloody revolution, without loosing any territories. People just left in persuit of happiness abroad. And now we are in EU but our infrastructure is continiously eroding, our industry is almost null, home security, education, healtcare are on the verge of collapse because of lack of qualified and motivated workforce in the country. Foreign agents have infiltrated all systems of the state and the government and work for their respective interest... Meanwhile the media ignores the facts and preach further integration in EU and NATO. Many people believe it, and many don't. The society is divided, we can't talk about it like civilized people any more. Everyone is picking sides but true dialogue is almost impossible, opinions radicalise. Before the perestroika there was only soviet/ socialistic propaganda allowed, now it is working in a similar way but in reverse, it is Euro-Atlantism and pro-Ukraism. Meanwhile hope for better, peaceful future for Bulgaria is slowly dying. Pessimism grows. And some people wonder how the soc. nostalgia is still strong...

I am from Russia, my relatives remember this day, even though we lived 256 km from Moscow, but my grandmother said that it was the most terrible days.. the government was changing, the 90s were difficult for Russia after the collapse of the USSR, tanks were shown on TV shooting at the government house, there were riots in Moscow, now it is difficult to realize that our older relatives were talking about it. It's hard on my soul after watching this video. Every time I look and wonder what our country has gone through... And I come here to grieve and remember the history of Russia.
I didn't even know it was like that before seeing this video. Only pictures i've seen about this in our history books in school were Boris Jeltsin on a tank, broken statues of Lenin and the fall of the Berlin wall. I'm from a western European country but seeing this video makes me feel there was much more to tell about the fall of the USSR. And i'm not even sure if we even talked about it in class. We talked more about the first world war than about the cold war while being Dutch, we didn't even take part in WWI but as a day one NATO country we did "take part" in the cold war. 90s were difficult for most post soviet states. In Poland there was also tanks, riots and terrbile days, years. Years of poverty by beeing in wrong side of iron curtain. BUT Poles fought their freedom, democracy, withstand terrible years and now we are a LOT better place to live than Russia. You Russians choose not to fight for your freedom, but join totalitarism. To live better, you have to invest, make terrible days, for wonderfull years. Actually these times were one of a kind for Russians for first time in their history, to not live under totalitarism, to defeat evil and live in democratic, wealthy society. And they have 25 years of Putin enslaving them...

People of the eastern block were deceived into thinking the west had an abundance of consumer goods on top of free healthcare, housing, guaranteed employment. Once the USSR was gone, there was no longer a reason for capitalists to placate the workers.
We believed in the best, who is that? Crowds of Muscovites with crazy rabble on adrenaline, led by newly-minted liberals? The common people basically immediately understood that this was the collapse of the country and division into republics. And it was a terrible despondency in anticipation of the inevitable horror. I remember this feeling well, which was widespread among almost everyone I knew working on the BAM, including many Ukrainians who worked with us. This was done by the Moscow bastards.

The meaning of the lyrics might be confusing at the first glance, but the theme from my perspective centered around the narrator not making a choice to leave, and the feeling of dread slowly taking over him despite him trying to find normalcy, ultimately knowing that one day he has to face the music as he can’t run away no more (hence the phrase “summer is ending soon”). To have this song and кукушка in his last album almost sound like premonition. It’s as if Tsoi knows he will die soon, and has to come to face with his decisions, good or bad, made in his life. It’s so haunting once you understand the theme of the lyrics of his songs.

From Australia but i have nothing but admiration and respect for the Russian people - you have a rich cultural stemming from an amazing history, full of both tragedy and glory. As a people you have experienced the most aspect of he human condition. Lot of people in the west have only ever known "good" times, but that is changing with our deteriorating economies. We will soon understand the Russian psychology personally. The stereotype of Russia in the West is that you are a cynical people, but I think that is just because you are ahead of the curve.
Really well-made video. I do like kino's songs, maybe because Viktor has a relationship on Korea and I'm also Tsoi. Something very big and fearful is happenning these days. All we need would be just understanding to each other and desiring for peace. Then the change/перемен will come naturally, just like the summer ends.

I find it interesting that in the west bands like Scorpions made songs like Winds of Change, with a very naive perspective of the changes that were happening in Eastern Europe. While instead bands like Kino were telling how actually things were.

The Scorpions had a viewpoint from a post-imperial mostly stable, dependable, predictable western world, while Kino, DDT, Aquarium wrote their best songs in the 80's, in that period of the late Soviet empire when the empire lingered but nobody in it was really interested in keeping it alive, kind of waiting how it would all pan out, would it survive or transform or what, so the songs reflected that mix of hope and fears, desire for change and anxiety. I'd say, each band mirrored its surroundings.
To be fair, the changes were way less chaotic in Poland, Czechia, Hungary, and the DDR.

Last week, I experienced what was probably the best musical moment of my life. We were in Prague at a concert featuring the music of the band Kino, accompanied by the Czech Symphony Orchestra. The event took place in the Hybernia Theatre. Right from the entrance, you could hear mostly Russian and Czech being spoken, but also a lot of Ukrainian. People of all generations were there, from preschool-aged kids to elderly folks with walking canes. The dress code was all over the place. Some showed up as proper Russian slavs in full Adidas tracksuits, while others came in full suits with ties and vests. Honestly, none of us knew what to expect from this concert. It was the European premiere, there had been no major promotion, and very little information was available. But we didn’t need any of that - just knowing that we’d get to hear Kino’s songs in a symphonic arrangement was more than enough.
After taking our seats in the hall, we were a bit surprised to see electric guitars and a microphone set up at the center of the stage. We had expected purely symphonic instrumentals. Then, all the musicians came on stage, and at the front stood a frontman with Viktor’s iconic white acoustic guitar. I have to admit, I was a bit worried about how it would all sound. But it only took a single verse of the opening song, Zvezda po imeni Solntse, and we were completely blown away. The intonation, cadence, timbre of the voice, the emphasis on the pronunciation of the final syllables in each line - it felt like listening to Viktor himself. I immediately had tears in my eyes and goosebumps all over. And that was nothing compared to what the violins, the rumble of the trumpets and double basses, the dozens of symphonic instruments, and the two female backing singers brought to all those familiar songs.
It was absolutely epic. The concert lasted over two hours. After the first hour, the entire theater was on its feet, singing, clapping, with many people standing in the aisles just to dance. Every song was rewarded with a minute of standing ovation before they could even start the next one. Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs - everyone was united in perfect harmony under the tones of Kino, without worry, without animosity, under the shared banner that is Viktor Tsoi.
I’ve been to dozens of concerts in my life, but this was truly the crowning moment of my musical journey. It completely exceeded all my expectations.

Вы писали что они новое дворянство отсылая к РИ, именно поэтому это «новое дворянство»(на самом деле все старая вырожденческая номенклатура) открывает 30лет спустя «Березку» а буквально недавно Путин подписал документ о продлении засекречивания «Березки» советского периода еще на 30лет. Я помню этот ужас в 90-е годы. В городе(!)люди садили очистки с ростками от картофеля, прямо у многоквартирных домов, чтобы хоть что-то поесть. Зимой отопление еле-еле, чтобы только не лопнули батареи в -30. Свет вырубался постоянно, сидели со свечками. Денег на работе не платили по полгода, пекла лепешки из муки и воды и пили чай из шиповника. Уже столько лет прошло, но до сих пор отвращение к шиповнику, стоит этот вкус поперёк горла.

Being Bulgarian born after the change has already happened in my country and in USSR as well, I can only imagine the shock and utter desperation that millions of people, fellow slavs from the Eastern Block have sufferred. This song and the perfect video montage helps me to better understand and feel the dramatism of a world that was falling appart literally around them. Of course the young generations back then (my parents for example) were quite optimistic about this change, but 90s just brought crisis and crime - organised crime all over Eastern Europe. Some countries manged to come out of the perestroika stronger and with better quality of life for their people, like Poland and Hungary for example. Others like Russia suffered a lot, took a giant blow, lost territories and half of its population from the split of the USSR, but still manage to continue and stay relevant 30 years later. My country Bulgaria has lost 1/3 of the population that was living in the country before the change. It happened without a war, without a bloody revolution, without loosing any territories. People just left in persuit of happiness abroad. And now we are in EU but our infrastructure is continiously eroding, our industry is almost null, home security, education, healtcare are on the verge of collapse because of lack of qualified and motivated workforce in the country. Foreign agents have infiltrated all systems of the state and the government and work for their respective interest... Meanwhile the media ignores the facts and preach further integration in EU and NATO. Many people believe it, and many don't. The society is divided, we can't talk about it like civilized people any more. Everyone is picking sides but true dialogue is almost impossible, opinions radicalise. Before the perestroika there was only soviet/ socialistic propaganda allowed, now it is working in a similar way but in reverse, it is Euro-Atlantism and pro-Ukraism. Meanwhile hope for better, peaceful future for Bulgaria is slowly dying. Pessimism grows. And some people wonder how the soc. nostalgia is still strong...

I am from Russia, my relatives remember this day, even though we lived 256 km from Moscow, but my grandmother said that it was the most terrible days.. the government was changing, the 90s were difficult for Russia after the collapse of the USSR, tanks were shown on TV shooting at the government house, there were riots in Moscow, now it is difficult to realize that our older relatives were talking about it. It's hard on my soul after watching this video. Every time I look and wonder what our country has gone through... And I come here to grieve and remember the history of Russia.
I didn't even know it was like that before seeing this video. Only pictures i've seen about this in our history books in school were Boris Jeltsin on a tank, broken statues of Lenin and the fall of the Berlin wall. I'm from a western European country but seeing this video makes me feel there was much more to tell about the fall of the USSR. And i'm not even sure if we even talked about it in class. We talked more about the first world war than about the cold war while being Dutch, we didn't even take part in WWI but as a day one NATO country we did "take part" in the cold war. Anyway i wish you the best.
90s were difficult for most post soviet states. In Poland there was also tanks, riots and terrbile days, years. Years of poverty by beeing in wrong side of iron curtain. BUT Poles fought their freedom, democracy, withstand terrible years and now we are a LOT better place to live than Russia.
You Russians choose not to fight for your freedom, but join totalitarism. To live better, you have to invest, make terrible days, for wonderfull years.
Actually these times were one of a kind for Russians for first time in their history, to not live under totalitarism, to defeat evil and live in democratic, wealthy society. And they have 25 years of Putin enslaving them...

We believed in the best, who is that? Crowds of Muscovites with crazy rabble on adrenaline, led by newly-minted liberals? The common people basically immediately understood that this was the collapse of the country and division into republics. And it was a terrible despondency in anticipation of the inevitable horror. I remember this feeling well, which was widespread among almost everyone I knew working on the BAM, including many Ukrainians who worked with us. This was done by the Moscow bastards.

The meaning of the lyrics might be confusing at the first glance, but the theme from my perspective centered around the narrator not making a choice to leave, and the feeling of dread slowly taking over him despite him trying to find normalcy, ultimately knowing that one day he has to face the music as he can’t run away no more (hence the phrase “summer is ending soon”).
To have this song and кукушка in his last album almost sound like premonition. It’s as if Tsoi knows he will die soon, and has to come to face with his decisions, good or bad, made in his life. It’s so haunting once you understand the theme of the lyrics of his songs.

As a people you have experienced the most aspect of he human condition. Lot of people in the west have only ever known "good" times, but that is changing with our deteriorating economies.
