You can switch crafts in the map mode. Click on the other one. Also when your close you can switch by clicking [ and ]. Parrachutes need to be deployed before they will activated. Kerbals can climb down on to the ladders if they are lined up. You just hold s for down and w for up (relative to the Kerbal not rocket). You only need to let go if they are not lined up. You can/should use struts to connect to srbs on the radial decouplers. They will automatically disconnect the struts when the decouplers go. Also Kerbals have their own personal parachutes when they eva. Activate this with "p".

Also, for takeoff at least in KSP1, a TWR of about 1.33 is about right and you generally want that to increase slowly until you get into orbit. Once you're in orbit, you can get away with TWR well under 1.

Oof, this was an episode high in "yell at Matt through the screen" moments.
RCS is what jetpacks use, so enabling RCS enables the jetpack.
You can switch to another vessel to command it instead of the one you're currently on.
Ant engines aren't RCS. RCS pods are RCS.
The lower your TWR, the higher you need to loft before pitching over for a gravity turn. If your apoapsis is less than a minute away and still in the atmosphere, it's too soon to pitch over.
If you put the parachutes in the same stage as the decouples, they'll activate for all of the parts that decouple at the same time. And so long as they're close enough to you, the parachutes will open at the right altitude. Otherwise, quick-switch between nearby crafts is probably the [ and ] keys (but maybe changed in KSP2).
Not entirely sure why I bother, tho. The failure is probably the point.
