There's an art to teaching off the cuff like this. You have a fine balance of knowledge, wisdom and humility that makes your vids hugely watchable, especially as the overloaded internet conspires to steal our precious time. Every second counts! Thanks.
Great to have a photographer talk about photographing with a drone. Everyone talks of the dramatic footage with a bunch of ooo's and ahhh's.... right up to the point of how to tune the camera and work in post. As a working photographer, I liked having someone actually walk through their experience with the camera part of the drone.
Thanks for posting this video. I was going crazy trying to get good results from my Phantom 3 video until I watched your tutorial. The settings you suggest work great and makes the videos much easier to work with in post. Your instructions were concise and easy to follow. I am already getting some great results. Thanks again!
this is incredible info for taking the Phantom Camera up to a pro level in post by carefully setting it up before hand... very grateful for this superb information
Hi there...really worked for me i haven't try it out side yet ..but definitely tried to shoot few shots driving the drone around ..i can tell the different mine is phantom 3se , my 4k was totally grainy but this was after watching your video ..i have learn something ...thumbs up....good stuff
Excellent video. I understand digital photography. I just bought a phantom three professional. I do not follow you with the post-editing portion of your video. Is this a separate software purchase. Does it come automatically when you purchase this drone. The instructions regarding camera shooting from the manufacture are very poor. Please help me
Thanks for the great video. Is there any way in Litchi or GO to make the camera settings semi-permanent? Every time I land and swap batteries, all my camera settings vanish. It is very annoying.
Thanks for the video. Do you have anything similar but working with Premiere Pro cc? Also can you let me know what you do with the camera settings down the bottom right hand corner of the GO app?
this is very help ful and hopefuly I am gonna become better pilot for my new quad copter, I took it for the first time today..... and I made a smoothy out of a lot of aloevera plants..... thanks for the tip, it will help my channel videos a whole lot.
Nice video I have a problem with my Phantom 3 4k settings. When i look att the playback on the mov the image shaking a bit not to much but enough to not be able to save it.Is there a problemes with the camera settings? im from Sweden Thanks :)
+Mike Hallman I own the Standard too and I'm a video producer. The standard is pretty much near perfection for the price you pay. you can get really impressive footage from this thing and the 2,7k looks really nice. those 1,3k missing to 4k arent the big deal
Thanks alot for this guide! Today was my first flight with my DJI Phantom 3, and the pictures turned out very good after some post editing. All thanks to this guide :)
Hi, thanks a lot for your tuto, very helpfull...Just one doubt about it, I just got Phantom 3 Adv and plan to use your settings; however, when in auto recording I get light changes that ruin my video. Should I lock exposure once measured for the hole recording?
great video..thanks! I am thinking of changing to RAW instead of JPEG. Never done that before so trying to learn. When I switch to RAW what difference will it make? shadows better? Also I am going manual and trying to adjust things. It seems my camera is out of focus more. Could that be cause it needs to be light for the focus to work better? thanks for any advice..
Nice! I was having problems on my footage because I was using auto settings and on some turns I was getting huge white balance changes. But this video of yours has taught me how to use a custom setting. Thanks so much!
Nice video bro my question is where did you get your thumbnail picture for the video I like it it shows phantom 3 is there a website I can go to to get free thumbnail picture
Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I am a huge fan of the Phantom 3. The camera is really nice, and 1080p 60 is extremely useable. I am constantly surprised at my ability to push colors and shadows in post. The highlights do clip pretty dramatically if you're not careful though.
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing this. With your settings you get a really flat image. Will these video settings also work in lower light with higher ISO's or will the image fall apart once you start grading it?
+Rolando Perez (OutdoorFanatic) I would think you need to adjust your white balance to the light available at night... every lightbulb or sunset or moon light is different color... easy enough to adjust on the fly in every type of light at night.
When you say that the Phantom 3 cam is not that great which camera are you referring to? The 1080p cam or the 4K cam or both? I am shooting in 4k for the first time so please forgive me if I ask stupid questions ok.
Hello. Thank you so much for this very useful video. I learned a lot from it. Can't wait to get into the field with this. However there are still two questions I'd like to ask. Number 1 being:" Do I still need to use an nd filter for the various conditions?" And Number 2 "What are your thoughts on "Pinnicle studio " for editing software since no one ever mentions it.
is it always important to fly with manual settings? I've flown with auto but find it annoying how it keeps adjusting the light to accommodate the sky's brightness resulting in the land to look very dark, whats the best to have a clear bright land but not overexposed sky?
Great video! Took a break from aerial photography/cinematography for several years on a regular basis. Long story short I have been fighting for my sons rights (he is disabled). Gotta love living in London England and dealing with politics, budgets and nonsense. My wife, son and I am are grateful that we will be moving into a completely adapted home to accommodate our sons needs in the very near future. So looking forward into getting back into a pastime I am passionate about (aerial photography/cinematography). DJI sure has come a long way as time has gone on. Decisions decisions when it comes to upgrading from my old school P2V+. Going forward with a Phantom 3 Professional or at a minimum an P3 Advanced would be a huge increase in performance. Got kicked in the nuts with the Mavic Pro's announcement. Certainly cool however torn between going with a Phantom 3 Professional or Advanced at this point.
I do all my drone footage editing on an iPad Pro, which limits the changes I can make post filming. It's extremely difficult to get the kind of finished footage you just did, with any true consistency anyway. Do you do your editing on a laptop, a good laptop makes video editing a lot more versatile.
On My phantom 3 pro my video is real choppy when I take the sim card out and put it in the computer. Can you tell me how to resolve this problem. What am I doing wrong ? I have not adjusted any thing it is the same as it was when I took it out of the box.
Any suggestions for pure night flight? i'll be in a city capturing a venue with varying lights. obviously want to capture detail of people etc. thanks!
Hi Ted, you certainly made video editing interesting AND easy to follow! :-) I'm on Windows (10 to be exact), so it's either Adobe Premiere Elements or Filmora for me (any advice would be great here). I like how simple Final Cut Pro (and you, of course) make colour correction and looking at your video, the whole UI. In your exeperience, which Windows based software most closely matches FCP for function and usabilty? Thanks!
+Andrewje85 Probably not. The D-Log likes to squish the highlights and shadows a lot. I would choose one of the more standard color spaces. That way you can get the best image possible without touching it in any post production software.
Great video! Very informative, I have a quick question though! If you're filming in bright sunlight and have an ND filter on your drone would you still use these type of settings? Or is there a different way to set it up? Thanks in advance!
+Marlon “MarlonPTY” Torres Yes, you would still use the color settings shown in the video. As you know, ND filters are used to control the overall "exposure" of the video by allowing you to lower the shutter speed to create a more cinematic feel (sense of motion). So, if you apply the 'rule of thumb' for setting shutter speed (i.e. 2x frame rate) and do not use an ND filter, the image/video will likely be over-exposed. Shooting in D-Log or D-Cinelike is more of a 'dynamic range' setting that allows you to preserve important highlight & shadow details.. So instead of letting the camera assign a color (which will affect the dynamic range), D-Log gives you a flat profile intended for post editing. That being said, you wouldn't use D-Log to control exposure, and wouldn't use ND filters to alter color. They are both important and typically go hand-in-hand / used in unison. At least that's my understanding.
D log gives you flat profile which makes it easier to color correct in post. D cinlike is there way of giving you a cinematic look to your shots automatically straight from the camera which I think everything is over saturated. And very hard to work with in post. So it just depends on what kind of footage you need. If your going to edit it or leave as it is
I have a phantom 3 pro and the video is a bit choppy and blurry. Especially when changing the cameras direction or during fast movements. Any tips? Thank you.
+Carlos Delgado - By chance, have you taken off the small foam piece attached to the gimbal? I had the same issue until someone told me to remove the foam! Hope this helps!
I am noticing a lot of my DJI Phantom 3 Professional footage has a lot of Anti-Aliasing issues with what looks like lines moving lines or patterns on buildings, pavement, or objects. Will these settings in this video help reduce the issues I am experiencing? I checked the footage on the card and I do not notice any of that so I am now wondering if its how I am transcoding the clips that is causing that to happen. I am using MPEG Streamclip to convert the DJI footage to Apple Pro Res 422 to edit in Final Cut Pro 7.
Sven Wiechers okay. so I know that the camera is not entirely the same. But...i meant...is the sensor the same? Because he speaks about the sensor of the DJI P3 camera being the same as in the gopro hero 3 black... is the sensor also in the DJI P3 standard camera? xD sorry for the complicated question
I have one of these quadcopters and haven't been impressed with the image quality. I will give these adjustments a try. Has anyone experienced great video playback on a phone, but the video quality stinks on a larger screen (TV or PC screen)?
There's an art to teaching off the cuff like this. You have a fine balance of knowledge, wisdom and humility that makes your vids hugely watchable, especially as the overloaded internet conspires to steal our precious time. Every second counts! Thanks.

Do the settings stay that way or do you have to set them for each time you use the drone?
this is incredible info for taking the Phantom Camera up to a pro level in post by carefully setting it up before hand... very grateful for this superb information
Thank you ! I put those settings on my Phantom 3 Standard , i get a lot better footage after color grade than before !:)
what video resolutions/framerate does Phantom 3 Standard have?
Do they have 1080p with 60fps?
Very clear cut guidance, thank you for that.
Good video. Very thorough. Does D-log create larger files?
thanks for the help!
Great tutorial! What software are you using for post processing? Thanks
He is using Final Cut Pro
Hi there...really worked for me i haven't try it out side yet ..but definitely tried to shoot few shots driving the drone around ..i can tell the different mine is phantom 3se , my 4k was totally grainy but this was after watching your video ..i have learn something ...thumbs up....good stuff
whats the best setting for night time shooting?
fast, detailed and to the point. great video
Superb video. Very professional and informative.
Which nd filter would you use to film a clear sunny day on a phantom 4 pro to achieve a cinematic feel
Excellent video. I understand digital photography. I just bought a phantom three professional. I do not follow you with the post-editing portion of your video. Is this a separate software purchase. Does it come automatically when you purchase this drone. The instructions regarding camera shooting from the manufacture are very poor. Please help me

I liked this video mate, thumbs up. Cheers from the IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
Really enjoyed this. In a aerial photo/video respective as well as color grading.
I certainly wouldn't mind owning a Phantom 3. Any good deals around?
great explanation, i only have issues with a high noise level when i shoot in dlog, is there any better settings to not have that, i shot on iso 100?
Nice video I have a problem with my Phantom 3 4k settings. When i look att the playback on the mov the image shaking a bit not to much but enough to not be able to save it.Is there a problemes with the camera settings? im from Sweden Thanks :)
Thanks! I just bought the Phantom Standard. I know the camera isn't as good, but this info will hopefully get me better results!
+Mike Hallman I own the Standard too and I'm a video producer. The standard is pretty much near perfection for the price you pay. you can get really impressive footage from this thing and the 2,7k looks really nice. those 1,3k missing to 4k arent the big deal
+rarevfx Does the custom settings for sharpness contrast and saturation are valid for the standard too?
Rolando Perez yes. Also d-log
Rolando Perez yes
I have the same drone
Thanks for the video, it helped a lot. However, maybe you can explain why I have a large black area above and below the video? i.e. no full screen.
Got the SE. I'm really happy with it with this video showing me that the sharpness kills it
Nice video! What's the editing program you are using?
Thank you for making such an inforamative video in such a short description great work
Thanks alot for this guide! Today was my first flight with my DJI Phantom 3, and the pictures turned out very good after some post editing. All thanks to this guide :)
Gonna give a chance this settings tomorrow!
Hi as a Pro. Would u prefer Phantom 3 pro or Mavic Pro?
I followed what you said in this video. Worked wonders. Thank you!
Thanks very much for all the info! I wish the DJI website had this much info!
I know this is an older video but it is a really great one. So well explained. Thanks. R-J

When you make corrections and adjustments as shown on your video, do those adjustments change the entire video recording?
Please tell what about the sharpen because you set -2, how do you sharpen in post? thank you
Very good video with great info!
Nice! I was having problems on my footage because I was using auto settings and on some turns I was getting huge white balance changes. But this video of yours has taught me how to use a custom setting. Thanks so much!

Currently flying my Standard! This is just what I needed!
Ted, how fast is your render time with that settings?
Thanks for the tips! Will try them over the weekend and share my results!
Could you please do the same tutorial color correction on Premiere Pro?
Hey Ted, Thanks so much for your video, you are easy to understand and clear in your instruction, I learned alot! Best!
Congratulations.
Excellent explanation!
Does the custom settings for sharpness contrast and saturation are valid for the phantom standard too?
+Rolando Perez (OutdoorFanatic) I would think you need to adjust your white balance to the light available at night... every lightbulb or sunset or moon light is different color... easy enough to adjust on the fly in every type of light at night.
any tips on how to sharpen the image in post? i'm doing it currently but i can never get it to look right..
great video. really useful. thanks
Hello There -
I heard you say what kind of program you use to edit video and pictures but can you recommend a few so I can compare please?
Thank You!!
thanks for making sense of a lot of things in that clip
I just get the Phantom 3 and I will start working on videos...nice!!!
what software were you using for editing the pics?
So I just got the DJI ph 3 pro and being honest the quality is not the best as of my maverick air 2 is there a reason why it’s fussy ? The Quality?
When you say that the Phantom 3 cam is not that great which camera are you referring to? The 1080p cam or the 4K cam or both?
I am shooting in 4k for the first time so please forgive me if I ask stupid questions ok.
GeorgeBonez all ;-) all do 2.7k or above
hi!There is any opportunity to get Ur mov. drone files into go pro studio for editing?thanks for Ur help!
Thanks, got my DJI Standard today - how do you do screen capture video on an iPhone?!?! I'd love to know how to do that!! Thanks.
There is an app for it called Screen Recorder for Android. I don't know if there is one for Iphone or not. Perhaps there is.
is it always important to fly with manual settings? I've flown with auto but find it annoying how it keeps adjusting the light to accommodate the sky's brightness resulting in the land to look very dark, whats the best to have a clear bright land but not overexposed sky?
Shoot manual and get a Polarizer filter to help with the sky not to look overexposed.

Gotta love living in London England and dealing with politics, budgets and nonsense. Joseph Bobowicz phantom 4 pro or advanced
Thoughts on selecting between NTSC and PAL ?

I noticed that you had Magic Bullet Looks in this film. How do you correct D-log footage with MBL? Thx
On My phantom 3 pro my video is real choppy when I take the sim card out and put it in the computer. Can you tell me how to resolve this problem. What am I doing wrong ? I have not adjusted any thing it is the same as it was when I took it out of the box.

High ISO is all I can think of...
Can u have samsung instead iPhone for camera settings or u need to have only iPhone
guessing the D-log and other features are only available on the Professional version of the drone
advanced as well
I am definitely going to try this settings, Thanks!

Great Video, lots of good info, Thanks for sharing.
great info. phantom 3 pro was so 2016, now 2019 which drone now would you consider for having the best camera for photography?
thanks . new subscriber
Ismael Mercado Currently it’s the Phantom 4 pro or phantom 4 advanced. If you want to spend more then go for an Inspire 2 with a good camera.
Great video! Very informative, I have a quick question though! If you're filming in bright sunlight and have an ND filter on your drone would you still use these type of settings? Or is there a different way to set it up? Thanks in advance!
+Marlon “MarlonPTY” Torres wondering the same thing.. since I just got some PP ND filters.
+Jai Manny Hopefully he'll reply and let us know.
+Marlon “MarlonPTY” Torres Yes, you would still use the color settings shown in the video. As you know, ND filters are used to control the overall "exposure" of the video by allowing you to lower the shutter speed to create a more cinematic feel (sense of motion). +IDStudio7 Thanks for the info!
hi, can you share what's the best settings (iso & shutter speed) for night photoshoot on the phantom 3 standard? thanks! =)
Shutter speed should be low and double your frame rate, ISO should be the lowest, and also use an Nd filter for motion blur.
I'm in Australia, drone newbie,is possible to shoot the milky way if I am away from natural light, love yr video
do you use a nd filter?
Thanks for your interesting video. Gave me some good ideas.
Do you also recommend these settings for the photo mode?
+Kalaman Films / Aerial Shots Yes, if you intend to edit the photos in post (i.e Adobe Lightroom)
Great video Thank You
love your informative outlook on these videos. im a fan. #KeepPosting
Thanks for the tips🎥👍🏼
Really enjoyed this, thank you so very much for your shared information!
Thanks for sharing! Great video!
Thank you Ted.Subbed AND liked. This helped me tremendously !
Nice one!

+WARGODCINEMA Tq sir for the info...
I have a phantom 3 pro and the video is a bit choppy and blurry. Especially when changing the cameras direction or during fast movements. Any tips? Thank you.
Same
+Carlos Delgado It is not made to be able to capture those kind of shots. Smooth and slow remember that and you will get better footage.
+Carlos Delgado - By chance, have you taken off the small foam piece attached to the gimbal? I had the same issue until someone told me to remove the foam! Hope this helps!

hey. is the camera (or the sensor) the same in the phantom 3 standard and the professional?
no. the camera from the professional is much better. its capable to shoot 4K witch the Standard is not.
Sven Wiechers
okay. so I know that the camera is not entirely the same. But...i meant...is the sensor the same? Because he speaks about the sensor of the DJI P3 camera being the same as in the gopro hero 3 black...

with which video editor are you editing the drone footage?
Final Cut Pro
Whats the editing program you use named and where can I download it for free (mac)?
+Felipe Andrés Merola Mansutti Final Cut Pro X, the mac app store for like $299, unless you want to pirate it.
what the name of software you use?
Amazing vid. Been looking at alot of videos and you've done an awesome job sir at explaining it. Thanks alot 👍👍
how do you correct an overexposed video shot from the dji on FCP?..... ground and the sky very white:(
thanks
I have one of these quadcopters and haven't been impressed with the image quality. I will give these adjustments a try.
Has anyone experienced great video playback on a phone, but the video quality stinks on a larger screen (TV or PC screen)?
