This is the 8th or 9th video on this camera I have watched tonight and honestly it is the first that has given detailed useful information with a great set of sample images explored in detail. I won't name the others I think that would be unfair, but if you watch this you won't need them. Well done Ted and thanks for doing this. Regards Jake Everyman.
@@aquilifergroup I'll wait for the Q4. The Q3 is an amazing camera, but it's hard to justify more than double the price of something like the Alpha 7CR, other than "because it's a Leica". Maybe by the time the Q4 comes out I'll be willing to pay that much for a fun camera that can actually compete with the best options on the market, beyond the Leica brand, feel, and color.
@@costafilh0I’m sorry but at this price not having 3 way screen movable is idiotic. Paying so much for camera and having limited composition in portrait mode 🤦♂️
This is by far the best review I’ve come across for the Leica Q3. Amazing photographs, and I appreciate how you explained the lens. If you haven’t done so already, it would be great if you could review/explain the different Leica lenses for the M and SL series in another video.
Thank you! The best review of this camera, period. Why? Because you've explained the lens. It's importance, being an APO, and it's qualities, being an APO. The actual focal length is secondary, almost, to the APO designation, a very important part of what Leica has done with the Q lineup. Top marks, thank you, again!
Ted, another solid video! You touched on the fact that APO f/2 is about as ”bocalicious” as an f/1.4, though with a slightly wider focus area (I.e. easier to not miss focus) and easier to achieve 3D pop, both things a lot of people don’t realize about APO lenses. The APO is also sharper. But the biggest game changer for me are the advantages of APO colours. I know your favourite lens on earth is the Summilux 50mm asph but the colours out of APO lenses are more vibrant, more film-like, more Kodak. I don’t know why this gets talked about so little! And then, there is the thing you love about Summilux lenses: sharp in the middle, soft on the perimeters. I concede you that. But I would rather have a lens where I can focus an object on the perimeter (like your wooden bridge photo) just as well. And not just the center. Just lock focus on your subject through the center and then recompose the frame contents. Of course, I could be wrong about THIS APO as I haven’t tried one. I’d love if you could confirm or deny any of my assumptions above. Love your output and energy, sir! Marko in Vancouver
Agree to all points. I’ve been using the 50 APO a lot recently. It’s amazing. I just know the lux better inside and out. I know exactly what it will do. Take that lens off the table though and APO lenses are the best. Zeiss Otus are amazing but Leica at one stop less make it in the size of a “new” potato.
Great that Leica made this camera, but I''d still take my Q3 28mm over 43mm for the greater versatility from wider angles of view, but the crop ability of the 60mp sensor. I find the Q3 28mm great for street photography.
I learned photography on a 45mm-equivalent lens (Sigma 30mm f1.4 on a Sony A6300 body) and for years that's how I saw the world. Fast-forward to now and I always want wider. 28mm is probably my favorite focal length right now but I also think that the average viewer understands a photo better when it's closer to 50mm. So I guess the question that the Q3 variants raise is: Who are you shooting for? Amazing video as always, Ted! Cheers!
I think it makes sense for someone who wanted a 50mm, rather than a 35mm. As a 35mm fan boy, I ended up pulling the trigger on the Q3 last year and now appreciate the wider FOV. I guess people can now choose though! Btw… I am still not sure if I justify the Q3, over just putting my Sony 35mm F1.8 on a camera. Back Button focus, with a small, light package - that has very good focusing. Yeah… I have 2 loves…
Finally! I actually canceled my m11d order when I heard this rumor. Yes please. I am one that shoots the q2 in crop. No more and to have a 60 crop for portraits is money. Loved my CL and 40 cron. It’s like going back to beginning for me.
The SL3 and especially the Q3 43 actually made me want to buy a Leica for the first time. The camera isn't perfect and will take some iterations to perfect it with better autofocus, IBIS, internal storage, and faster readout speeds, but I would definitely consider getting the Q3 43 or eventually a Q4 43.
Amazing camera and specs, lovely design. I just simply can't bring myself to buy something like that. I glanced at my assortment of a7s and lenses throughout the years, for a fraction of the cost. No doubt the Leica is great. Your reviews are always amazing. Keep up the great job.
I'm buying it. I placed my order within hours of Leica's announcement. The 43mm lens clinched the deal for me. It's a big splurge but it will certainly be the last camera I'll ever buy. I may as well make it a good one.
Nice review and perfect timing, now that everyone will be holding out for this camera I can finally get my hands on the 28mm Q3, delivery tomorrow. I shoot wide more than mid range and although I do periodically shoot 50mm and 90mm, I just can’t live without the 24-28mm and 35mm (cropped) focal length.
I would have been very tempted by the Q3 43 last year when I bought my Q3, as my first camera had a 40 mm lens I’ve always more at home in the low 40s than either 35 mm or 50 mm. However, I don’t think I can justify owning both a Q3 (28) and a Q3 43. Maybe I need to try harder and the rationalisation will happen.
Hasselblad has been using 80 mm on 6*6 for years which is 42/43mm on 35mm equivalent , its great to see the other quality camera manufacturer embrace this focal length ... as a hassle/leica film shooter 80mm and 35mm lengths mostly , 42/43 is a very balance length and a great alternative to 35mm or 50mm you get the best of both ..
Good review but the comment "43mm is the closest focal length to the human eye" grates me. If that were true, why have they never made a lens at 43mm before?
Got mine coming to me. As one who often crops 28mm images this will work well. I will keep the Q3 and for a 2 lens kit, as such they will be terrific for a FF, AF light travel needs.
I’m super excited for this even though I’m only a Leica window-shopper at this point. Interested to see how this performs on a wedding day as a one-and-done kit!
Very cool!..everything is nice as it should be based on the original Q3…but some missed opportunities for sure for a better “update” especially that bump on the price point…it could have at least implemented a built in memory like their other models…also No CAI ( Content Authenticity Initiative) support which could have been nice to have and also a bump on better AF performance..because we all know that the original Q3 isn't as efficient in the AF..lol just some little things to point out..but at the same time all these points could have made the camera even more of a worthy "upgrade" and that fact that some of these points are available, i.e built in memory, CAI..and Lecia chose not to implement them in this body is kind of dissappointing
I'm one of the people for whom the 28mm was too wide for a 'do everything' lens, so 43mm is great for me. I'm a little disappointed by the quote unquote 'macro' mode though. I wasn't exactly expecting 1:1 but this is barely 1:5 - calling it 'macro' is frankly a bit cheeky! My all time favourite standard lens is the zuiko 50mm f2 macro (which goes to half life sized close focussing) and I thought this may be a modern successor, but not quite. This is ofc all academic cause I can't afford it lmao but nonetheless, glad to see Leica branching out and happy for those who will love this.
As this has to be the perfect lens for a camera like this imo, they missed the opportunity to go with the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything in terms of focal length... jokes aside, if I had the money I'd go for it asap
Leica is basically doing what Ricoh did with the GRIII and GRIIix and it's a very good idea. If I had to live with a single focal length, which I obviously can't, it wouldn't be a 28mm, it's way too wide. I used to have a Leica X1 and the 35mm equivalent was ok, as long as I could walk close enough to the subject.
This is my dream Q as 50mm is my favorite focal length and I like shooting at 40mm too. I think the choice of 43mm is just great. The only quirk is, that they don't offer "frame lines" for 50mm. It is quite an omission to skip this classical focal length and go for the 60 instead. I still am rather going to update my M10 to a M12 instead (when it arrives), but this Q would be the one fixed lens camera I would love to live with. Fun fact: this is exactly the same FOV as the 55 on the digital Hasselblad cameras, which is also the sensor diagonal.
Just placed my preorder! I respectively disagree though- I think this will actually compete with their SL series a bit. However, I think these Q cameras better fit the Leica ethos and help them differentiate further from Panasonic. Glad to see they made this!
Watching this I know I will never be able to afford this camera, probably at the top of my bucket list for my google guides and product photography 😢 awesome video.
I had the Q2 but didn’t like the 28mm focal length. It was too wide and I sold it. So I bought this and I’m loving it. Much prefer it to the 28mm. Silly money but I can see myself using it and enjoying it for many years.
The sensor on the M11 and Q3 /Q343 is so good that monotone conversions are excellent quality. I'd be gobsmacked in a monotone version of the Q3 could add significantly more - i suspect a far bigger differential for example between the prior generation colour and monotone sensors.
This is a very cool idea although I do think the 28mm version makes more sense when coupled with the 60MP sensor. Honestly, they easily could have gotten away with the 40MP sensor in this camera to keep the price the same as the other model. I personally doubt the 100mm+ crop modes will be particularly useful to most photographers interested in a camera whose main selling point is a highly unique lens.
Terrific review. I wonder what you think of the Q3 43 vs the Hasselblad X2D 100c with a 55 mm XCD lens (also 43 mm equivalent FOV). I know the Hasselblad is bigger with an interchangeable lens, but a comparison of both as "walk-around" cameras is not out of the question.
Thanks for the quality video!! Apologies if you've mentioned this but I don't recall. With Q3, is it possible to allow for AF ONLY (no auto-exposure) on half button press while allowing for manual exposure? Coming from M, I am used to setting my own exposure (Aperture & Shutter) but does want the AF
Aperture, shutter speed and focus all have an A position. ISO can be assigned to a function button (or just live in the quick menu) but also has an automatic setting. You dial in what you want.
Fantastic images. This camera and really, the lens, looks incredible. I've been looking for a street photography camera that I could carry with me anywhere and anytime without it being a burden of its size. Not sure this is small enough and the price certainly puts it out of my reach. For now. I'd agree with the camp that 28mm is too wide and 43mm could work. For now, I'm almost certainly going to get Leica's D-Lux 8. Not nearly the same league as this camera. But it's superior to phone images and the pricing is fantastic. Also happy that when looking at the images, they reminded me greatly of my Lumix Leica f/1.7 lenses for my Panasonic G9 cameras....
The 28 mm is to wide for my photography and that’s why the Q was not for me. High on my wishlist is a monochrome camera and if they are going to make that version of the Q3 43, I will buy one.
In an ideal world I would buy both the 28 and 43. For a one lens only street camera, you would be far more restricted using the 43 vs 28, especially for cityscapes. Gorgeous lens though.
Hello! Thank you for this useful video. I have a question that some might find weird but... is there any decent wide-angle converter that one could use occasionally with the Q3 43? I mean, I definitely prefer the 43mm as a fix lens, but I would love to have the possibility to shoot a wide-angle for landscapes if needed. I doubt that this even exists, but who knows… Thank you!
Good morning! Just received the Q3 but was wondering about your thoughts on the new Q3 43 for Street photography?? Pros? Cons? Any opinion would be appreciated. Thx!
An excellent and comprehensive review, thanks. I read on another review that the autofocus is a bit … uncertain ? Also the min focusing distance is not quite as close as I mite wish. You suggested one could zoom in, n the fern looked great, but are you still at 60mps in macro ?! Thks again for review, looks n sounds an excellent camera, but with a few damaging weak areas…
Nice video! And lovely camera. Will probably order one soon. Want to point out something though. Aren't those crop modes a bit bogus compared to an apsc mode?
This is my second pass on this vid and love all of what you do fyi. When you said Leica was listening to their customers…. I guess true but acting on it maybe not so much. I think if they were acting on it we would have a 35 and a 50 option in Q form. Maybe if they stopped making M11s that don’t work they would have resources for things that do. Best and will keep cropping my Q2 and waiting for a firmware that allows for that cropped in can DNG. lol
I got if yesterday, actually one of the first few in my country. I already love it very much, complements the Q2 28 I also have. The lens is breathtakingly good! Only quirk: it doesn't connect to the Leica Foto App (yet). The App might not know the "43" yet, therefore it is not found via Bluetooth. But I'm expecting a patch for the App hopefully very soon. EDIT: The Foto App of Leica is updated now - it sees the 43! :-)
I felt that the whole point of the Q was to show the difference between a phone and high quality optics, and to limit the photographer somewhat. To provide an additional focal length option sort of ruins the Q line a bit, for me. Looks lovely, though.
Nice preview! I wanna see how it compares to the original Q3, because honestly, aside from the APO, cropping into the 28 would still give you a very high resolution file (even too much still) and roughly the same equivalent aperture. However, you cannot crop down, and I think this is why they chose 28 in the first place. But eh, I do landscape and everyday life, so I'm biased. It just seems that they added a very big constraint which make this camera less flexible in usage, and for that price, in my opinion, that's very hard to justify.
Ted, thanks for the review. Can we download the DNGs somewhere for pixel peeping on the Mac? The 1/2000 is a little bit disappointing. 1/4000 should be possible and it’s also no stacked sensor.
I will eventually have this camera. No time soon. Just can afford it. But when I get it, it will probably be the only camera I have for the rest of my life. And I think that might be the point. When a Q4 comes out, I wouldn't get it. I'd ride with this. Maybe one day. Oh, it's clearly too expensive but I'd get it for sure.
I'm holding out for a reporter version of this, and I know there are some AF issues, restrictions but if they made a Q43 Reporter Monochrome version - good god.
It looks great, still the GFX with the GF110 is a lot better across everything, but so much heavier and larger. At the end of the day I can’t give up the IQ for portability. Maybe Fuji will produce a fixed lens version of GFX or Leica provides a medium format version, I can dream.
thank you for the review Ted. was wondering if the issue with the evf was fixed? the q3 had a very minor shake of the screen in the viewfinder after you focused it. it was very minor but present in every press.
Hey, I like your thoughts on photography. Only critique is that Boca is a place in Florida and bokeh (bo-ke) is how it’s pronounced. There’s confusion amongst a lot of people about this, coming from a well known photography channel it’s a good opportunity to get it right. Cheers.
In a few months there will be more of this model in the used and secondhand market then the original 28 mm model. People buying into a camera with a fixed 43 mm lens will soon realise how it restricted. The camera really is.
Leica really just needs to do what Panasonic is attempting with the S9. Just make a compact Q body, make it L mount, and release the 28mm and 43mm lenses in L mount too. The Q could have an electronic shutter and I'm sure theres a way to update existing L mount cameras to use leaf shutter lenses.
Great review. Love the bokeh especially with your wonderful flower image. Wish Leica would would make a Tri elmar APO version 😊 Ted will you be buying one?
Not rich enough... ;-I However, I love what Leica is doing, and, that it managed to keep going, no matter what! I always wondered why so few manufacturer went with the "true diagonal" based focal length! I would've thought, more had come up with campaign slogans like "the lens that sees the world like your eyes".
Nice review, thanks. Just wondering, why TF in these technologically advance times, Leica can't make a single Q3 model with both 28mm and 43mm lenses. If I've missed something obvious I'd be glad to know what - unless I've missed the patently obvious, which is that Leica is a business that cares more about camera sales through marketing than its integrity to customers.
You all always refer to street photography as an example of use with this camera, but what’s your opinion for nature landscape photography? I do consider this camera as more light and compact option to my Sonya7rv when I just go out for a walk and do not want to take too much material with me, but I am nature photographer. Thanks in advance for your input.
The minimum focus distance seems odd! My Q in macro mode gets so close to the subject, your images are too far away, look like shot without the macro mode!
How much would it cost you to achieve this with the M11 and a lens? Is there any other camera/lens combo that could achieve this directly out of camera? Genuine questions.
I've found no review of this 43mm focal length the acknowledges that Pentax released it's high-quality full-frame (of course) SMC FA 43mm Limited lens decades ago, and has updated it with HD coatings since. I'm not attempting to compare Pentax to Leica, or worried that the Pentax has no camera body attached. I'm merely pointing out that Pentax put out a 43mm hi-def/hi-quality lens a LONG time ago under precisely the same rational that Leica has used this focal length now. (I have a Q3 43, BTW, along with an original Q and several Pentax bodies and lenses.)

Leica Q3 43 Monochrom, that would be a camera to have!
Weirdly enough, I simultaneously think this is total nonsense “just shoot a monochrome” profile while also really wanting one in monochrome 😂😂
Yes - absolutely!
@@theartofphotography Thank you for confirming what my local Leica store dealers didn't know haha
Aperture, shutter speed and focus all have an A position. ISO can be assigned to a function button (or just live in the quick menu) but also has an automatic setting. You dial in what you want.
@@theartofphotography relief to know the setup is more sensible than what the sales rep claimed 😃 Thank you
Looks fantastic, and 43mm is by far a focal length I’d prefer to 28mm, but nowhere near within my budget.
Great efforts and video as always, but would have liked to see a lot more sample images from this brand new lens from Leica.. Cheers.
The 28 mm is to wide for my photography and that’s why the Q was not for me. High on my wishlist is a monochrome camera and if they are going to make that version of the Q3 43, I will buy one.
I had a Q2 Monochrom and loved it. A Q3/43 Monochrom would be superb.
Uuhhhh… I like your Captain Willard. 🥰🥰🥰 Awesome watch!!!
Great Review Ted
Hope you are well my man! Been tool long!
" 43 mm " It is technically more precise as per human eye and that is why most artists are eager to own it and work on it . Cheers to Leica Team .
Good morning! Just received the Q3 but was wondering about your thoughts on the new Q3 43 for Street photography?? Pros? Cons? Any opinion would be appreciated. Thx!
Amazing review! So helpful and informative
Same here. Pair with my old q2
@@watch_MrG the App is updated - it sees the 43 now!
Oh boy i hope there will be a ken block special edition of this q3
Ted, thanks for the review. Can we download the DNGs somewhere for pixel peeping on the Mac?
The 1/2000 is a little bit disappointing. 1/4000 should be possible and it’s also no stacked sensor.
I have the q3. And the Q series could have been the best l-mount camera of all time. Mist change of Leica but commercially this is better for them.
Think I need to trade in my Q2. Still like new though. Arghhhhh. Thnx for your thoughts. Helpful.
Enjoyed your video. The D-Lux line has a switch for selecting aspect ratio. I wonder if this, repurposed to select a Q3 crop, would be a +ve attrition
Great information in this video. Thanks 4 Sharing
Excellent tutorial:)
It looks great, still the GFX with the GF110 is a lot better across everything, but so much heavier and larger. At the end of the day I can’t give up the IQ for portability. Maybe Fuji will produce a fixed lens version of GFX or Leica provides a medium format version, I can dream.
thank you for the review Ted.
was wondering if the issue with the evf was fixed?
the q3 had a very minor shake of the screen in the viewfinder after you focused it. it was very minor but present in every press.
thoroughly well explained
Hey, I like your thoughts on photography. Only critique is that Boca is a place in Florida and bokeh (bo-ke) is how it’s pronounced. There’s confusion amongst a lot of people about this, coming from a well known photography channel it’s a good opportunity to get it right. Cheers.
So much confusion.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL MUST HAVE EVENTUALLY !! 🙃AU
In a few months there will be more of this model in the used and secondhand market then the original 28 mm model. People buying into a camera with a fixed 43 mm lens will soon realise how it restricted. The camera really is.
Thanks Leica now I can't decide which Q3 to save for...
Good and new design len
Leica really just needs to do what Panasonic is attempting with the S9. Just make a compact Q body, make it L mount, and release the 28mm and 43mm lenses in L mount too.
The Q could have an electronic shutter and I'm sure theres a way to update existing L mount cameras to use leaf shutter lenses.
Great review. Love the bokeh especially with your wonderful flower image. Wish Leica would would make a Tri elmar APO version 😊 Ted will you be buying one?
For all the reasons I will add this camera to my collection of tools is the reason I prefer 43mm.
Perfect complement to an M11 fitted with a wide angle lens
Not rich enough... ;-I However, I love what Leica is doing, and, that it managed to keep going, no matter what! I always wondered why so few manufacturer went with the "true diagonal" based focal length! I would've thought, more had come up with campaign slogans like "the lens that sees the world like your eyes".
Love your review.. Simply the best... May I know is the video have stabilisation?
Nice review, thanks. Just wondering, why TF in these technologically advance times, Leica can't make a single Q3 model with both 28mm and 43mm lenses. If I've missed something obvious I'd be glad to know what - unless I've missed the patently obvious, which is that Leica is a business that cares more about camera sales through marketing than its integrity to customers.
I luv this, my favorite lens is 40mm, so they have done this for me.....
Ok. I’ll start saving …
starving*
Same thing. ~\8^)
Is the lens a true 43mm or 40mm, on the q3 28mm the images are more like a 26mm is it the same case here with the 43mm or Leica has fixed that.
Another channel claims it’s 43.5.
I think so and as with q2 it wasn't 49 mp it was 53mp ( if you undo the in camera corrections and crop )
Exactly one of the reasons I didn't keep my Q2M.. it was wider than a true 28, unfortunately.
@steelbiker70 from what I've seen it's 41.5mm
This is the first time that I have felt the urge to consider a Leica camera in this day and age...
You all always refer to street photography as an example of use with this camera, but what’s your opinion for nature landscape photography? I do consider this camera as more light and compact option to my Sonya7rv when I just go out for a walk and do not want to take too much material with me, but I am nature photographer. Thanks in advance for your input.
name added to two pre-order lists for this beauty (already a Q3 user)!
The minimum focus distance seems odd! My Q in macro mode gets so close to the subject, your images are too far away, look like shot without the macro mode!
Yeah I think they faced design compromises with that beautiful APO lens.
@@zroeder 🤔
Would love a side-by-side pixel-peeping comparison of the Q3 and Q3 43's pics.
Good Information. I would like to have your thoughts on its focusing capabilities.
