Vault 96: What is Specimen X-001? | Fallout 76 Lore

- Advertised as An Ark for the Atomic Age, Vault 96 was never what it seemed.
It's greatest secret remains a mystery, as in cryogenics bay 86, locked behind military access controls, a single cryo pod houses Specimen X-001.
Accessed only by the vault’s automated systems its genetic samples exhibited a transference capability and… were used to create a unique shifting mutation. All attempts to identify what the specimen was failed. No vitals, no measurements, no source data. Only an ID number.
So what is Specimen X-001?
In today’s video we explore two different theories to try and answer this question. Going back through the events that took place in Vault 96, as well as investigating some potential links between the mutated creatures from Vault 96 and the mutated enemies we face in Daily Ops.

listening to the intro of this x-001 immediately makes me think of the creature from "The Thing"

It's a soundtrack from arkanes prey game, he even showed some clips from prey.

Worth noting that Mothership Zeta's abominations are a thing that exist too, proving that Zetans do have SCIENCE! of the genetic engineering type as well.
I completely forgot about them! Terrifying creatures.
My theory has been that the Zetans are "naturally" smaller, like the Flatwoods Monster, and they've been splicing human DNA into their gemone for centuries. The abominations being a misstep as it were.
They have intersteller travel, that's much more complex than genetic manipulation
@@illeagle9560 It's more "they're canonically are doing it" there.
Though I will very much will argue against the whole "science is a singular progression" idea, knowing how to make a rocket isn't going to help that engineer be able to cure the common cold.
@@nonamegiven202 actually that make makes perfect sensez it's just about priorities at the time. Imagjne theirs would be much different
I think the idea that specimen x0001 is a flatwoods monster to be less likely than the possibility that the flatwoods monsters are actually the product OF x0001 merging with the aliens, either accidentally or deliberately, and as such it's more likely to be something like The Thing or, as you say, the alien beasties from Prey.
My reasoning: the tiphons share similarities with the beastie from John Carpenter's The Thing, an 80s sci-fi horror film, whereas the experiments themselves, and the description of what happened to the bloatflies, seem to be heavily influenced by The Fly, also an 80s sci-fi horror film.
Nice ideas Peter! I’m not sure we will ever find out for sure what it is but it’s fun to theorise. Thanks for checking the video!
I was instantly thinking “Flatwoods Monster” as the video unfolded.
If I was one of the researchers, and discovered I had been tricked after the vault doors closed, I would already consider myself dead. As such, I would constantly look for ways to sabotage the whole project. As always, “Kill ZAX!”
Oh 100%. This Vault mainframe was particularly nasty as well. Failing to meet the Quotas = death. Tampering with Bay 86 = death. And only the Overseer was ever actually allowed to leave!
Just cut into the walls and start cutting wires
When I was looking through this Vault all I could think was "Five of the most intelligent people on the planet couldn't find a way to sabotage the machinery?". I mean, what did they do, just rush the Assaultrons with clubs? There are several places in the bunker without constantly trained turrets. Figure your plan out, sabotage one of the doors to those areas, either build yourself something explosive because that's actually pretty easy with the materials they had on hand and they would have had the knowledge to do so or otherwise arm yourself, crack the door open and take out anything you can, repeat, profit.
Like, yeah, I'm making it sound easier than it really would be. But it's like the four that were left at the end just Leeroy Jenkins it.
@@nothanks9503 im sure that would fall into tampering or attempting to leave
@@jameslilly3750 wasn’t me 🤷♂️
A TYPHON!?!? Holy crap I wasn’t expecting that! Most Terrifying basic enemy in a game! How many things did you hit/shoot with Gloo to make sure it wouldn’t attack you?
Those who don’t know Typhons in Prey could turn into any clutter object. A cup, a lamp, a ball. In Prey other than a few save locations any time you’re somewhere there’s more than one or a specific item it could be a typhon.
Im pretty sure only mimics can copy the form of inanimate objects.
It is just a theory mate but there are a lot of similarities! Thanks for checking the video 👊🏻
I was also thinking "ayo arnt those the phantoms from prey?"
@@jacobweatherford4696 You’re right. I got the species and individual mixed up.
No joke i thought this was a prey video based on the thumbnail
I like the idea of it being a Typhon, either a Mimic or a Phantom.
Mimics can become Weavers which can become poltergeists
Phantoms are resurrected humans by Weavers.
But the key note to think about is that Prey (2017) isn't an Alien game per se, it's a Cosmic Horror.
the coral is created as a nest for a greater Typhon being to come along and devour.
You take damage if you try to scan it which parallels the human mind breaking when gazing upon a Lovecraftian Elder God.
The reason I state this is due to Fallout's repeated references to Outer/Elder Gods.
So I'd theory it's an Easter egg to both Prey (2017) and it's ongoing In-Universe Cosmic Horror.
All of the known mutations at 6:30 are the serums we use to get those, except the Cryokinesis...
We actually do have a cryptid that seems to be able to use a form of teleportation and transference, the Mothman. As well as possibly being able to use mental abilities, though thats questionable.
I think X-001 however is related to the Interloper... or its something new.
I did think about the Mothman but technically it actually jumps/flys when it travels! But does seem similar. The interloper is definitely powerful I just think we currently know so little about it!
@@UraniumFever76 I agree but it sounds a lot like 76’s version of a shogoth.
Would be hell of a time to enter some new vault in the future only for your compass to display hostile readings and then the junk items start moving around.
Flustershy was killed by rusty canister lol
What if the creature is something entirely different and new? My most solid theory is that it's one of the earliest subjects ever exposed to FEV, and it was just repeatedly exposed over and over again for a long time.
Or a Halo situation where the First batch of the second generation was perfect, and all others failed to achieve the same results.
I was thinking of the psykers from fallout 1 that the master created with FEV, plus the man himself. Telepathy, photokineses, electokineses, and pyrokineses.
Technically if you break down the mutations then the most likely answer is, its whatever the player character is in the Fallout franchise. Its never really explained what we are and why we can do what no one else in storyline can. Cause we do everything that is listed. We easily teleport, can deal with fire, cold, and electrc damage better than any NPC or creature. We have a bit of psy powers in that we are so easily able to manipulate NPCs through voice chat options. We can phase materials into built objects really easily. We have knowledge of other player characters and events even though their is no direct way we should know about things, which ties into the jumping or spreading of mutations between subjects even though they are sealed. Much like every time we are sealed in a vault.
This gnawed at me to no end after reading all the terminal entries, etc while exploring the vault. I was so disappointed you don't even get to see the cryo bay it's in. It was so foreboding in my head
I've wondered if 2023 is going to be the year of the Enclave for Fallout. The TV show could be having them as the antagonists with set leaks the research base guarded by men in black fatigues carrying energy weapons, the new datamines for 76 and the Enclaves connection to Expeditions from the shadows.
I haven’t seen those set leaks! Sounds really interesting. Where did you see that?
All i know is the Appalachias future in the palms of the enclave

I've actually been playing PREY for the past few days, so hearing a potential link between the Typhon and Fallout 76 was awesome.
Such a good game Prey is!
On a side note, Prey is a really good game and everyone should try it and Outter Worlds.
while I'm sure that this was just supposed to be a reference to Prey, i would just like to note that we know the Enclave is the remnant of former US government and remained in contact with surviving Vaults well after the bombs fell. iirc they contacted the overseer of vault 101 during the events of fallout 3
I was dozing off while playing fallout and listening to vids from your channel. Then I heard that song and it had my full attention.
I love prey. What a great game with an awesome soundtrack.
Thanks for checking them out! Honestly love. the Prey soundtrack so glad I was able to use it in a video lol that was kind of related!
always the possibility of it being some kind of Lovecraftian inspired creature from beyond reality, after all, it wouldn't be the first time eldritch beings were hinted at in Fallout lore.
Oh and I absolutely believe the Enclave was partnered with Vault-Tec on this.
There's nothing that specifically says that other aliens besides the Zetans dont exist in the Fallout universe. Maybe the Typhon exist in Fallout as well. 🤷♂️
Another thing linking the enclave here is the data was being transferred out to other installations via satellite...and who has a satellite, the enclave satellite the korvac Muldoon.
Aside from the fact that it's from a different game, the Typhon theory makes the most sense. I don't think the Flatwoods Monster's teleportation is genetic.
Also, from the Creation Club, you can get the Prey spacesuit as an add-on. I'm probably reaching, but that could be an indicator that Prey and Fallout exist in the same universe.
Most of creation club stuff isn't canon. Like you can get stuff from Doom and Skyrim too but they are 100% not canon material and more of just a joke item for fans of those other franchises.
If this is actually related to the Typhon then I rather have the developers treat it as an easter egg rather than confirming that fallout shares universes with other games.
Yes! I remember that suit mate. Think it would be interesting if it is an Easter egg for Typhon! Thanks for checking the video!
They are not. Prey is set in al alternate history, but it's a very different alternate history from Fallout's.
It’s very late to say it but in f76 the flat woods monster is a zetan scout
No, just that they are both willing to do collabs.
I highly doubt that anything we see in this story is actually canon, it’s just a silly reference.
I like how he uses the phantoms from pray as a fitting look for the description of this thing
The Idea that X-001 is a Typhon would be a horrifying one; the ending of Prey 2016 implied that if even a Single One of them made it to Earth or even someone with too many of their Nuromods it would be apocalyptic in a way that makes Nuclar War look tame. As would X-001 if it's really a Typhon...
The only saving grace would be if it was the equivalent to the "Morgan Yu" or through some Temporal shenanigans was actually Morgan from one of the endings where "IT" doesn't choose to go on a murderous rampage. A normal Phantom variant wouldn't have all those abilities at once but what pops out at the very end with potential experience with the full gamut of Typhon Nuromods might be able to do all those things.
Bethesda's Prey came out in 2017 not 2016.
Why hello Phantom from the game Prey (2017) in the thumbnail.
Prey is unbelievably good, everyone go play it now it's awesome.
Considering how the typhon organisms are multidimensional i wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to make a Bethesda Gaming Universe
Typhon solos the Fallout universe
Everyone who's played GW2 - End of Dragons:
"How the hell did _that_ get here?!"
Fantastic work! I love the theorising in this, and it sounds plausible. Always looking forward to moar!
Moar to come! Glad you liked the video thanks 😊
This was such a great watch. Keep it up bud!
Prey is so underrated. I highly recommend it.
He never going to play
Damn. This is very well done. I think this is the first lore video I’ve ever watched fully.
The researchers fields of expertice all suggest that the Flatwoods Monster is the result of the research in Vault 96. Consider that the team was put together with foreknowledge of the task ahead. You had a microbiologist, a geneticist, a programmer, an aeronautics engineer and a roboticist. The vault was also equipped with both automaton fabricators and genetic engineering facilities.
This means the end product would be a genetically modified cybernetic creature with flight capabilities. The next clue is the petri dishes as three mutations are abilities the Flatwoods monster has; these are regeneration, venom and electrokinesis. Finally the Shifting ability is uniquely associated with this creature.
As for why the petri dishes suddenly developed identical traits or how teleportation fits into this is strange but the purple glow of the Flatwoods monsters eyes could be a clue as the Fallout Bible has this to say: "the psykers in Fallout 1 show some pretty over-the-top mutations that could take the world to Childhood's End faster than you can say "uh, his eyes are glowing?"" So what you may have here is Zetans who have been exposed to the FEV resulting in the manifestation of psychic powers who are then brainwashed or killed before being cybernetically grafted to advanced power suit technology with flight capabilities and deployed for field testing in Appalachia where they'll be mistaken for the local boogyman.
Love this so much!
Slightly off topic, but wouldn't you love one of those *blue* tubes as a drop?! I always think this when I go in that vault. No more green 😅
Seems like such an easy win for them! Just change the colours for more atomic shop purchases 😆 or drops ideally seeing as daily ops rewards rarely get updated!
Considering Bethesda also owns pray and makes sense that they're going to start porting over enemies from that game when they start to run out of ideas
Wow. That was amazing a Fallout Lore video with some horror. Great job!
Thanks mate! Glad you liked it 👍🏻
I don't know if I'm the only one, but as I was playing and encountering all of this info in-game, and then investigating more about this Vault and Specimen X-01... It rememebered me a lot, A LOT, of "A Dead World" a Prototype and Fallout crosover story.
I know, I know, this isn't a serious comment, I know Bethesda would never go around and be like "let's make a reference to a fanfic", I'm just saying they have a lot of similarities.
For those who don't know, Prototype is a game with a virus called Blacklight, that gives it's infected, pretty much, the same characteristics that Specimen X-01 has, and in this crossover, Vault-tec managed to capture an infected, and put him inside a locked pod in a Vault.
Is a good story, and again, I'm not saying this is what Specimen X-01 is, it's just a fun comparison.
This barotrauma music instantly just brings me nightmares, perfect choice for any weird creature video.
A typhon... in fallout... or a typhon like creature... well, all I can say is that the wasteland is screwed.
You can kill typhons with a wrench.
They're super dangerous, but its not like John carpenters the thing walking into a grass field level dangerous.
I think its intended as a neat easter egg to Prey 2017. Like the nirnroot in Fallout 4.
Also 96 is honestly the most fucked vault in fallout imo.
I forgot about the nirnroot! Honestly 96 was so brutal. None of them were ever getting out.
I actually liked Bethesda's "Prey" game. I also figured this was a reference to said game.. That it was a Typhon in that area. Not everyone seems to like that game but I really liked it at least.. Hoping that game will be continued at some point but I have a bad feeling it wont. ( I am glad though that I am not the only one that thought this. Since you mentioned them in the video as well. )
You know I wouldn't be opposed to Bethesda combining these universes together. Even adding dishonored and deathloop could be cool too
Isn’t this just a unofficial prey Collab?
I saw that thumbnail, my first thought was the hunter from Resident Evil 1 and the golem from Castlevania: Judgement. That's a scary combination...
if fallout can have nirn root as just a cameo and not a direct universe connection
it can have typhon as well
Possibly another piece of evidence to the Bethesda universe theory
I immediately figured the specimen was a cybernetically present artificial intelligence for the specific purpose of medical science.
Clearly has been abducted instead of negotiated.
Ah finaly a lore video on this !
Thanks mate!
Dude! I have been working on a story for a future filming project, and it involved being centered around a being that possessed multiple abilities that could either bring hope to the wasteland, or burn everything in their path.
I don’t know how you got this all out together, but job well done man! One of these days we gotta pick each others brain over a cold bottle of nuka cola. Awesome job!
That sounds awesome mate! I think the Mothman sounds a bit like the being you imagine. Still not sure what each of these creatures want! And absolutely a cold one would go down a treat! Look forward to seeing you come up with your project 😊
Wouldn't the better fallout 76 creature to fit the description be the mothman instead of the Flatwoods monster? Teleports, mind control, telepathy, etc. Seems like a much better fit to me.
These 2 games are so different damn
Oooo buddy. I had forgotten about this! Good stuff man!
Something you only mentioned, is that when the x-001 sample was analyzed, the result was as if it didn’t have anything to register.
It certainly sounds like something that would happen with a typhon sample, given that they can seemingly imitate any inert material. On the other hand, they also have the ability to control electronics in Prey, which there doesn’t seem to be any sign of here.
The alternative is that, possibly, the creature is something from the supernatural side of Fallout. We know how much Bethesda loves their Lovecraft references. With that in mind, this sounds more like a Shoggoth, which is VERY similar to a Typhon with it’s mimicking ability.
I'm really hoping they dip in to that side of Fallout more soon. The unknowable! But yeah I assumed the fact it didn't register was proof it was of 'alien' origin as its genetic makeup was unlike anything from earth.
(SPOILER WARNING FOR PREY)
If it is the Typhon, then them not altering/controlling the tech in the Vault can be explained: they hadn't reached the point where they could make Technopaths yet.
Think about it, Technopaths are shown to be at least a different subtype of Typhon in their ecology, and we don't see them in Prey until the infestation grows worse. Same thing with the Nightmare, it doesn't show up until the infestation gets worse, and until Morgan becomes more powerful via Neuromods (especially Typhon-based ones).
Using this info, and the fact that Appalachia isn't covered in Mimics, Coral, or has an Apex actively eating it, we can assume that the Typhon infestation was killed early in development, and as such Appalachia doesn't have to worry about becoming Prey 2: Fallout Edition.
That, or again, it's just a reference, and it didn't actually happen, or it is just tied to the Interloper or another Cryptid we haven't seen yet. Still, would be fun to hear the two universes are loosely tied to each other, or to hear the Enclave began fucking with the same shit that got Talos-1 to become a big, orbital paperweight.
When I saw X-001 I though megaman X finally got a sibling.
This makes me think we would be getting more mutations
I’m sure we will be in future!
Enclaves formulas for mutations are likely a direct result of this vault and further searching the Enclave white springs bunker and the missions you are sent on allows you to discover some hunter/researcher's notes on the strange creatures known before the nukes and aside from super mutants and other fev creatures there are a few creatures that make a appearance: the mothman, zetans, the old gods(the sculptor in fo3, the monster at the bottom of lucky hole mine, Cold in the new update of 76, and the other interference from the paranormal in the games), the other genetic anomalies like the tunnelers and wanamingos, then there are the floaters and pits creatures. What if fev is not what we were told it was and it was extracted from something it would explain why they were never able to stabilize it if it wasn't really created.
Yeah I agree with your thoughts on this! I actually just did a new cryptid video. I think they just teased a total of 7 new creatures on the scoreboard!
i think x0001 is a FEV mutant tbh. FEV mutants are infertile but can reproduce asexualy as was seen in the flat worms exposed to FEV. So, perhaps the specimen's ability to infect other organic material was a mutation that WesTek was able to create in this specimen to circumvent that. Furthermore, WesTek did work with Vault Tech, as they provided the ZAX computer system that WesTek used for their research. So, perhaps the US Gov (in the months before the bombs) gave Valt Tech their most promising specimen to protect and continue research on as the WesTek lab was a major target and the Mariposa Base was also at risk (though ultimately unharmed) so as to ensure at least some of their research survived.
West Tek did make a lot of mutants to be fair! Could definitely see that being the case!
I don't actually think it is either a typhon or a flatwoods monster.
To me, the flatwood monster seems more like a crazy alien scientist with a specially designed battlesuit, whose every ability is mechanical.
And i don't think they'd reference another game like that.
What i think, instead, is that specimen X-001 is an entity like the interloper or visitor, a weird and highly alien creature found on Earth. The descriptions and logs about X-001 give of a very eldritch horror vibe, matching those two creatures who are themselves clearly based upon eldritch horror.
Looks like one of the Phantoms from Prey.
Just a theory about the Flatwoods Monster.
I think it's a normal Zetan alien but they require certain specific nutrients that aren't found in a large enough quantity so it's body is more or less shriveling up to conserve itself while it adapts to the nutrients around it. I don't think it's going to continue to devolve, but unless it gets on a regular diet of its alien nutrients, I think it's just going to stay the same.
As for it's teleportation? I think it's just a specialized recon unit. That's just my take on it.
I love the cinematic quality of these videos
Thank you very much!
Great video man, you made some convincing points!
Maybe it is related to the interloper... i dont think that it is related to zetans at all... basically because I think that Vault-tec and the zetans were either working together or part of each other. I always have had the suspition that all these experiements are linked to an external being experimenting on an allien planet... meaning that the zetans either inflitrated Vault-tec or created vault-tec through human proxies in order to analyze humans and the earth fauna and flora, as it seems humans were one of the few races to actually repel their invasion... humans took their mothership later on and destroy a second incoming mothership. That DLC gave some light to some of those suspitions back then. I dont see how mutating people and understanding human phisiology could be more interesting for humans surviving the apocalypse than for aliens... I also dont think that Vault tec and the enclave were working together but more likely like a government shadow organization they found out this work and piggyback them and stole all the data for their own research and experimentation. Regarding the escape of mutated specimens... as far as I know that was done by the "president" at the time wanting to take control remotely of the silos by creating a level 1 emergency situation... but failed internally and even MODUS decided to exterminate them all, as they not only comprimised the enclave, but also everyone else including the "country"... hence it was defined as inherently evil and destroyed ... you can see also from the enclave members (at least the ones that we got holotapes from) that they were not expecting anything of this to happen, but only the madmen at the top did it... therefore I dont think that the enclave at the end is the ultimate bad buy ... they are twisted... but I would say that they are neutral evil more than 100% evil. I think that there has to be something else than meets the eye... I even think that the Interloper is tied to all of this... maybe the Interloper is the reason why the zetans are so keen to invade Earth?? Who knows.. But nonetheless... I think that your video was awesome
Really like your theories mate. The Enclave, Zetans and Vault-Tec all do seem linked. But yeah how they would all react to the Interloper would be really interesting! Thanks for checking the video mate 👊🏻
@@UraniumFever76 Thank you man. It is a pleasure. Your videos are very well done and had helped me navigating through Apalacchia a lot. :)

I don't play 76 so I'm probably a little confused, but whats the point in offing your best scientists for not meeting quota? Like "you sure scared them into working John, but uh, now we're out of our best scientists, the ones who likely knew best about the things they created.."
Because that’s the brain dead thinking Uber Capitalism makes 😂
EpicNate send me here, he said it is a nice fallout channel, and i am happy to found your channel! have a nice day, new sub and comment for the algorithm
You know the “shifting” ability and the bloatfly fusing with that other creature made me think of that obelisk in the dunwich building with the woman half fused with it so maybe there’s something with that idk I’m desperate for any dunwich related content in fallout
I appreciate the effort you put into the visual story telling, gotcha a new sub! Looking forward to your content!
Hm. Good video. Were I to guess combining both theories might be a viable answer.
Zetans trying to harness the Prey critters gives us Flatwoods monsters.
Specimen X001 therefore could be a captured Flatwoods.
The “spreading” mutation gives an in-game lore explanation for the double-mutation events and so on.
Thanks for the video!
Hey man nice video as usual but what is the piano theme at the beginning of the video ?
The best thing involving Fallout 76
the biggest mystery of all why make this game with a completely different design philosophy
X-001 is Todd Howard.
I hope so!
If you’ve never taken the opportunity to play Bethesda’s “Prey” … my heart never slowed down the whole playthrough 😅
Killing someone who doesn’t meet a quota is the dumbest thing. Like who’s gonna fill that quota now?
Seeing the picture of them with the helmet on reminds me of the aliens at the ranch in Zelda: Majora's Mask. Seems like they were the inspiration.
i think specimen X-001 is a flatwoods monster because a flatwoods monster could be found in vault 96 before it whas open to players you could see the flatwoods monster if you clipped thru the wall or vault door before it whas open to players ... i also think the enclave is involved in all vault´s not only vault 96
You've earned a subscriber good sir.
I love the appreciation for prey 2017 including the intros music
Have to say that this is an excellent piece of work. Really top quality.
Thank you very much! 😊
What the frick is doing Prey on earth?
Something about all of the vaults just doesn't make sense.
The vast majority of them we're basically designed to fail but the experiments they had going on a lot of them there was no way that they could successfully survive.
The only successful vault we know of are ones that either abandon their mission or didn't have an experiment to begin with.
Some of these experiments could have been failed days into starting why invest billions of dollars putting together a whole vault for an experiment that could possibly fail almost immediately.
Now assuming there is some main vault tec vault somewhere that actually received all of the information from all of these vaults.
What could they possibly use some of these results for.
What could having put one man and ninety-nine women in one vault and the opposite in the other vault possibly tell you about anyting.
I'd say maybe ten of all the vaults I had any kind of an experiment that could possibly impact the future of humanity.
And the rest of them were just cruel manipulative ways people thought up to kill people that they should have been saving
X-001 makes me think of Shadow Lugia aka XD-001 from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Love this video, it needs more love. Thanks for the video@😁😁
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
All across Fallout's lore there are examples of what can only be described as Eldritch Horrors, you can even find some of them in 76. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turned out the specimen was one of these, how Vault Tec would be able to contain one though is beyond me.
Hey never thought I would see prey mentioned in a fallout video!
Very very well done! 👏
Super interesting stuff and spectacular visuals!!! Another great video! Very underrated channel!

Thank you very much Sally! Glad you liked it 😊
i love your theory i dont like its implications for fallout cannon but thats not your fault thank you for putting more people onto prey a wonderful game
Thank you mate! Glad you the video 😊
Fallout canon was heavy messed with as soon as Bethesda purchased it. At this point I wouldn't worry about it.
@Mr. Johnson I mean yes and no they added alot of cool shit and then not alot cool shit so like you gotta do hoops to make it make sense but it all eventually makes sense
And to think that there are still people who think Vault tec are the good guys. Jeez.
Surely not! They are the worst!
This really makes me think about trying 76 out, but I still have years of time left in 4
and its a prey screenshot for the thumbnail lol
Ive never gotten into that vault.
The recent ufo leak, the video on a military base of the uap/ufo in ultraviolet light floating/hovering reminds me of this. Same kinda shape and movement
what if the smiling man is x-001? perhaps he was a scientist that used the mutations on himself or the test subject for the mutations. he sort of phases away when you attack him and perhaps, if he can change his molecular structure, isn't really human at all, which would explain the peculiar smile he has. he hasn't mastered a human form yet... or something like that lol.
Sound like mimics
Surprised no one pointed out that the intro BGM is Prey (2017)'s menu theme, bu then I saw what you did there at 11:43.
