Train Horns! Part 2 - Nathan P5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- In this video series, we'll listen to different types of air horns used on North American locomotives at railroad crossings.
Part 2 features the Nathan Airchime P5. A couple of older cast P5's are featured in this video-these are non-existent on Class I railroads but can be found on many short line and tourist railroads. The P5A, which uses a shorter 4A bell, makes an appearance as well.

The P-series was developed as a low-maintenance alternative to the M5, allowing bells to be arranged anyway on the manifold. The P5 was on the market in the mid-1950's, with the K-series being developed a short time later as a better-sounding replacement or alternative to the P-series; however, the horn was widely adopted by the Illinois Central, Rock Island, and Southern Railway. New castings introduced in the mid-1970's are responsible for the less harmonious P5's heard today.
Today, P5's are still commonly heard on Norfolk Southern due to predecessor Southern Railway having an abundance of these horns. Likewise, they are found on Canadian National, especially former Illinois Central locomotives which are known among railfans to have the best newcast P5's. The horn is much less common on other Class I railroads. P5A's were common on Amtrak in the 1980's but have mostly disappeared except for Metra. Some P5A's are sprinkled around the country, mostly heard on NS.
Thanks for watching!

Nice collection of P5 clips! I'm surprised to see just how many different types of NS units have P5s. They must be a default replacement horn for NS. That first P5 was really neat too.
Hey Mike, thanks for watching/commenting! It does seem like NS is hanging on to these horns, as a lot of the AC44C6M rebuilds have them.
I think most were inherited from the Southern Railway. They used p5s and new cast p5as
The Nathan P5 horn was the standard horn for the Southern Railway for a very long time. After they merged with the N&W to form NS, the combined company continued to buy new locomotives with P5's up through the first couple orders of CW40-9's. At which time they switched to the K5LA or one of the newer variants of that horn. They still buy P5's for use as replacement horns, and also have lots of old stock off of retired units. That's why some newer units end up with them.
I never knew that dash 9s could have p5s
Hi
4:10 nobody was expecting the train to go on the turnout LOL great compilation
Definitely my favorite horn
Yes, it's a nice one!
I have one mounted on my pickup truck lol
Alex Hart lol
I agree. P5 IS DA BEST
@@alexhart4369 nice. how do you get it mounted?
It's funny, I just heard a train go by from my apartment, just a 2 block walk from my apartment, and I decided to look up what the Nathan P5 sounded like on NS units to see if that was the horn I heard. 2:06 is a clip of the exact area the horn was coming from, with the same horn I heard! Thanks for this!
Cheers from Lebanon, Pennsylvania!
~EDIT: You must be located somewhere near me, because plenty of these clips are on the Harrisburg Line! Central Penn Rail Productions indeed! Double cheers to that!
I love the "garbled" sound that these make when they are mounted behind the exhaust on the EMD's. Sounds way too cool! That SD-70 at 1:34 does it well! I've only ever heard this or noticed it on the SD-70's
That's caused by excessively long air lines from the compressor to the horn itself. Sounds amazing
How could 2 people dislike this video?? You get great shots and a rare slug catch at 6:51 and a Dash 9 at 11:04!
Lol I don't know, the data says it's usually viewers from other countries. I am sorry but our train horns are better than most other places!
Yeah your right the p5 is byfar my favorite train horn of all time!! Out were I live i don't hear alot of these horns😥
@@CentralPennRailProductions by far the best
Chime horns like the ones in this video will always be better than those annoying, discordant klaxons used by other countries.
@@CentralPennRailProductions agreed
P5s have the eeriest and largest tone. It’s like if you hear one you best get out of the way. My fav horn for sure.
The Nathan P5 is definitely my favorite horn!! I didn’t know that East Penn Railroads 7874 was even equipped with one because I have an Atlas model of her.
That's really cool! Thanks for watching!
Same!
0:55 even with one distant honk of that p5, you know the NS is coming
Don't forget that the IC used these too! The P5 is my absolute favorite!
Yep! Fun fact, did you know IC and CN companies work together? That’s why they have the same train models and horns.
P5s and K5Ls are the best horns, hands down
Don't hear many K5L's around here.
Atlantic Coast Line No the K5LLA in my opinion
@@pokeyrailfanning Me too.

@@defaultguy9087 chilll those horns lol!BUT I AGREE LOL
Definitely been a year since I last saw this video. I live in Illinois, and I never get tired of hearing those P5s in the Chicagoland Area.
Loving those trumpet horns! Your 1080 footage looks almost 4k!
I've gone to rendering in constant bitrate, rather than variable. That probably improves quality on UA-cam end. Can't wait for a good 4K-60p camera. My gut is telling me to wait to see the releases this fall.
Really interesting to see the East Penn Railway unit #7874. That exact unit is actually currently being used by a gas company to move tank cars from the local H23 train to the gas facility near where I live, and I have seen it in operation several times.
Believe it or not, I first heard the Nathan p5 horn on Seaboard Family Line System. Then later on Southern Railway in the early 80s. But CSX replace most of them from Seaboard.
Awesome catches! The scene at 10:40 was my favorite because of both the P5 and that SW1001 trailing!
If you grew up with Illinois Central, the P5 says” FREIGHT TRAIN!”
If you grew up with Freight Australia, it means GRAIN TRAIN
But yes
This is such a awesome series! I would like to see more of these videos! Gotta love the P5 such a sweet sounding horn, well 2nd to the Leslie RS3L.
More on the way, K5LLA and K5HL next.
Central Penn Rail Productions Awesome! K5HL is such a killer horn. The K5LLA has made me loose too much hearing. Lol
Haha I hear you (no pun intended). Some of those K5LLA's are insanely loud!
Central Penn Rail Productions Yes they also make my jump if some engineer blasts it as soon he clears a crossing. I makes me jump!
Wow! the east penn engines I have never heard such a lovely sound congrats.
9:56 That Nathan P5 train horn sounds like a Nathan K5LLA train horn.
this is why I call Nathen P5s Illinois Central horns
I wanted to include an IC SD70 in this video, sadly the one I shot leading last year ended up having a corrupted file. On all trains, it had to be that one...
NS #6677! That's Marc Lingenfelter's channel name.
Great Video ... My second favorite horn .... Always thought it sounded like a screaming cat until it passed by then you'd hear the bells harmonizing ... : o)
FDNY8231 me too!!! Although I think those are my number one horn!!
What’s your favorite?
@@foamymcfoamface7328 RS5T
P5s and P5s come from Rock Island E8s and Metra F40PH locomotives, so it's one of my favorites. The other being the Wabco AA-2.
Great video! Love those horns!!!
Nice p5 clips, i love the p5! Keep it up!
I grew up with the old cast p5
I love the P3 at the end
Wow that's absolutely awesome great job
I watch this video from beginning to end every minute of it the train shots are excellent I could not read the name on the side of all those white Hoppers going by it look like it said Conrail quality I'm not sure the only thing that outshines the trains and the horns is the scenery and your choice of locations it's absolutely excellent thank you for sharing this thank you very much
Agreed. I especially love the locations. It gives such great ideas for model railroaders and also for me it takes me back to when I was a kid being around some of these areas and watching the trains come through. Just something about.
Thanks! Those are Conrail Quality H1K hoppers, still used for hauling limestone and aggregates.
Wow these have the longest fade off I have heard lol but it makes them unique
My favorite was 6677. Oh boy this was a really really good video!
That time was just MONTHS before retiring. He was a lucky duckling for that catch
I've been around trains with the Nathan p5 horns- back in the day, they were on both Conrail and Chessie System trains. Nowadays, both Norfolk Southern and CSX carry those horns on their locomotives!!!
You should direct a movie about trains some day 💯
Great video!!!
Thank you!
11:45 bonus points for the flashing yellow and no left turn lamps! I haven't seen one of those in operation in literally 35 years!
kleetus92 check out Ashland Virginia where at least 2 crossings have them.
Loving this series. What camera do you use? I see in some comments that you render at 50Mbps constant - I have a Sony CX900 and I do the same thing. I think the XAVC-S codec really makes a difference, too. The finished files are massive, lol, but it’s worth it.
The Sony FDR-AX100, so essentially the same camera. Yes the files are massive, which has resulted in a huge collection of hard drives lol
(1:48) that’s are to see a SD70 leading a mainline freight train.
that's an SD70 my guy
The funny thing about catching NS 7286 is that NS 8023 was behind it, which also has a P5
Well used to, now has a K5LA & 7286 is retired 😢. I found a excellent P5 on 4058 yesterday
There were some long crawling horns in there now those are the trains i love
Great video and sound. My cell phone ring tone is a P5.
Some thoughts I have...
I think GECX 7544’s horn is actually a new cast P3.
Quite a few of the NS P5’s sound a lot like IC P5’s.
NS arranges its horns in the P5R24 configuration (2 and 4 bells reversed), whereas IC had them mounted with all bells forward.
Oops I think you're right about GECX 7544 I must have dropped that clip in the wrong video. Oh well.
Central Penn Rail Productions I also forgot to mention that 6332’s horn sounds weird for some reason
Could be that it was just frozen, it was around 18 degrees that time of day I shot it.
IC's SD-70's has them arranged in the P5R24 configuration.
Nice video! Old cast P5s are better then new cast in my opinion, but the M5 hands down beats the P5 overall. IC 1018 has the best new cast P5 in my opinion and I’ve had the opportunity to see it a lot on the Bessemer.
Thanks and I agree with you. I was to get out to the Bessemer this year.
Here is a video of RCT&HS RDG 5308 with an old cast P5 if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/c0mIn4QX3nc/v-deo.html
Sadly this locomotive hasn't run in 10 years.
@@CentralPennRailProductions I think there's quite a few operating M630s though. Practically the same thing.
Bessemer & Lake Erie 902
I agree with you I like the old cast p5 horns better than the new cast p5 horns
Gotta love the Doppler effect.
I find it interesting that some NS trains don't flash their ditch lights when approaching a crossing. I'm mainly talking about the train at 2:06.
Can you do a video about Nathan P3 horns? They’re my favorite. A wheeling and Lake Erie sd40-2 6353 has that horn. Anyway excellent video
I am still making it, should be out within 2 months I hope, other train horns will be out first. Thanks for watching!
I can't wait to see the next train horns you post!!!!😍😂
U aways have great videos
Thanks!
Love the one at 2:50
I agree
The ESPN 7874 Personnally sounds like an M5 to me.
5:50 is my favorite horn out of all of these. No Doubt
11:45 is my second favorite
10:40 is my third favorite
What's the best setup for getting a three-stage mellow quill out of a p5?
1:32 WHAT A KILLER P5
3:41 sounds similar to the winnepeg jets goal horn
They use a P5 as their goal horn. Way too cool!
Diesel trains are so gorgeous !!!
Love the P5 horns there my favorite horns
That Canadian National freight train had ten locomotives hauling those train cars!
Nice video, the P5 on the 1802 sounds horrible!!
Because nothing can beat RDG 5308.
*Cool*
Muito bom seus vídeos.
I've never heard a Nathan P5 in California. 🙁
what makes one horn sound so much more robust and crisp than the others if they are all the same model? do some get dirty or sick?
OH MY GOD NS 9459 HAS A AMAZING P5
Sadly got rebuilt into NS 4648 and lost it
Great...
The P5 has always felt more like a freight train horn than the K5LA tbh. K5LA always makes me think of amtrak, P5 makes me think of freight
Favorite Horn
Second comment! Great video as always!
Third*
Where'd you record the first clip at?
NS#5070 (P5) GP38-2
Your welcome!!
P5 horns are the beast but with Illinois Central sounds insane but East Penn Railroad sounds like NYS&W 3014 first horn from the 2000s before they replaced it with an old cast P5 horn 3010 had Nathan P5 horn on the NYS&W railroad so did 3022 but 3010 had a Chronic horn so NYS&W retired 3012 has a Nathan P5 horn
6:54 did i just see a NS Slug / Booster unit?!
Yep
1:30 2530 is actually a P5A
That is my favorite train horn
When I think of a diesel air horn the P5 is what I think of.
