As a major fan of SP, I just cannot get enough of the P3. Also, something about myself, I'm Canadian... so not only is the P3 a personal favorite of mine due to my love of Espee, but as I found out last fall, it's actually an extremely common horn here in the great white north... I spent a week in the mountains of BC and was woken up to the melodic sound of 3 chimes echoing through the mountains every morning. (I live in an isolated town with no active railroads, so my only experience with trains is when I travel to other parts of the country) It's sad that the P3 and other similar horns like the K3L and Leslie RS3L are on their way out, I personally love the sound of the classic 3 chimes far more than the 5 chimes you hear on GEVOs and ACEs today. But I'm glad you can still hear them on CP and NS somewhat frequently.
Until I started making this video, I didn't realize how few P3 recordings I had (almost half of these shots are already on my channel in other videos). I have seen a few locomotives with P3's at locations that didn't require horn, two of those locomotives (NS 3031 being the one I remember off of the top of my head) no longer have P3's...thanks for watching!
I grew up in southwest Virginia, close to a Southern RR track. I absolutely love to hear the old Southern engines horn; later became Norfolk Southern. My papaw was a section foreman on Southern in the early 1900s. Maybe that's why I've always been partial to that railway! As a little girl in the 60s, if a train was coming close as we school kids waited for the train, the engineer would always wave at us! How I love that Norfolk Southern engine and horn!!
Neat video! Pretty cool that you caught NS 2408 and then I got to run that engine at Morristown & Erie. I didn't realize that engine was a regular in this area, thought it came from down south.
Some people say it’s still sounds like a P3 others say it’s an rs3l. to me it sounds more like an rs3l. very fouled though. so it’s honestly very hard to tell. it sounds like a mix of a p3 and a rs3l
A lot of units that had P3's now have RS3L's or other horns, probably replaced off of retired ex-Conrail locomotives. The Amtrak retrofits come to mind: NS 3029 through NS 3031, all had had P3's until 2018.
Again better than the Nathan K5LLA! I just love the sound of a P3 sort of like Nathan's version of a Leslie RS3L just a bit squeakier. When I ever hear a P3 I always think of the South Shore Line's commuter cars. What another fantastic video! The Nathan P3 is between the Leslie RS3L and Nathan K5HL oh can't forget the Leslie RS5T but it is up their.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Old cast P3's definitely sound like RS3L's, but the only Nathan horn to truly imitate a Leslie RS3L is the K3LB, which I wouldn't mind hearing more of those.
@@CentralPennRailProductions Your quite welcome! I don't think I have ever heard a Nathan K3LB (maybe it's because I can't tell the difference lol) but I would like to hear and compare the differences. Im guessing does it sound like a RS3L just louder?
In the last clip of the K3 video starting at 12:05. NS 5827 wears a K3LB. Some BNSF GEVO's actually have this horn too. It uses the 1L, 1, and 3B bells, which are the Nathan equivalent to the Leslie bells. At first, you think it's a RS3L, but once it gets closer you can make out that 1L dominating the sound.
@@CentralPennRailProductions Ah gotcha that makes much more sense! Thank you for the clarification. Now I gotta learn these Nathan K3 type horns!I just listened to it and it has a deeper tone than a Leslie. To me it sounds like a deep K5HL but it is not how interesting!
Does anyone knows what horn was mounted on the Northlander train unit? Not the EMD F7. But the first diesel locomotive, which was already driven on the TEE train..😎 This was then rebuilt for Canada, got bells and other horns.
Do you have videos of the Erie Lackawanna unit?? Also can you tell me what kinds of horns are on CP GP20ECO units. They sound like updated version of Holden M3H
I believe most of them have K3L's or K3H's, although some are split between the cab and the long hood, so essentially, one horn is a K2 the #1 and #3 with just a single chime #2 on the rear. I don't have any videos of the Erie Lackawanna unit leading, only trailing.
When did your get the grab on the D’ Huddie’ G O A T paint scheme! U Always one the best info providers of current and historical data out there. Great videography as well!
They do, but a P5 runs the risk of sounding more like a P3 if some of the bells are clogged or not working. In either case, when fouled, each horn can be subject to a great deal of squealing.
Recently the sd40 on the short branch railroad that passes next to my house had its old horn switched for a p3, and im kinda sad. Not that i dont like p3s, but i feel like its a downgrade from its previous horn, a leslie rs3l. Plus the p3 is extremely quiet as well as opposed to rs3ls.
Over the years I watched and listened to so many trains that my ears can tell the differences in the horns most of the time. However, if I am not sure, I will look at pictures of the locomotive online. If you spend time learning what each horn looks like and sounds like, it can become second nature to pick out what train horn each locomotive has. There are good guides online such as: atsf.railfan.net/airhorns/
Based on the comments section I'm guessing I'm the only person hate-watching this video. Nathan P horns sound like absolute dookie to me. But, whatever floats your boat.
3:26 it's SO BEAUTIFUL the way the train comes around the curve
Kind of makes it look a little faster in the beginning, then it slows down and faces the camera
*coughs in AWVR 1206*

That is magical. The bell sounds awesome. Classic. Then the horn kicks in and it's like ohohohohohhohohowowowowowow

Atleast the K3's are basically EVERYWHERE on canadian railroads, i hear them all the time in Vancouver
@@wceyuki pretty sure the K3L or some variant of it was actually designed for Canadian railways.
@@trainknut It was, the K3LA is the american equivalent. The BCOL K5H's are still my favorite.
Horns like the p3, the p5, k3l and it's American varient and BC rail k5h's sound better than modern Horns on the GEVO and modern locomotives
I love the Nathan P3 so much! I here it almost everytime when a Freight train comes by my town.
I will always hear AWVR 1206
THE REAL DIESEL TRAIN HORN, Like if unstoppable brought you here because that horn was used on it and besides the first horn was absolutely stunning
Nathan P3 = when there is anything related to trains
Nathan P3
it's the best train whistle
D&H 7303 has an old cast P3, which is pretty rare now. They tend to sound slightly deeper than new cast versions

Thanks!
Technically is considering the horn plays an A major chord.
p3s are legendary 💕
P3s are pretty cool. The SOO Line P3s are definitely the best.
I agree. Sadly it's long gone, that shot was from 3 years ago.

bro 3366 has a leslie rs3l now. i just saw it last summer with a very fouled rs3l. sounded amazing but tbh i wish it still had to p3.

PCP awesome compilation! I really like the old cast p3, which is rare
Thanks! I believe that D&H engine still survives, but will be rebuilt /retired any day now.
I wouldn’t say that because I’ve caught 7304 roaming around where I live recently.
Wheeling and Lake Erie 6353 (AWVR 1206) has the same horn from unstoppable
Love them P3
In the modern days, The Nathan P3's are presently and mostly found on many Norfolk Southern locomotives.
My favorite train horn one of my favorites
I own 2 P3s, an ex NS new cast, and an ex SP old cast (previous owners had no clue which locomotives they came off of).

P3 and P5 are my favorite horns by far, just curious as to why they always tend to make a squeaking sound right as they begin to blow.
because the manufacturer wanted it so sound awesome
They arent supposed to squeak like that actually, that's just a result of wear and tear over the years.
You will catch alot of these on Ex-SOU units
