    A common misconception but while big skirts were popular with teens in the 50s, the poodle skirt didn’t come around until the 80s, 30 years later. Still have fun, it’s commonly associated with the 50s so no one will sneeze at it.

    • @kittenface8577
      @kittenface8577 18 днів тому

      Wait,what?? No,that is not true AT ALL. They most certainly had poodle skirts in the 1950s,that is the main era of when they were worn,and countless historical photos will show you that. I'm sorry,but what on Earth are you talking about? . They were first designed in 1947.

    • @quinnr8215
      @quinnr8215 16 днів тому

      @@kittenface8577 the original poodle skirt was from the late 40s and was popular amongst a very niche group of teens that would order them from a catalog. The modern style of poodle skirts that we now associate with the 50s ( which is a lot more subtle and looks very different) didn’t dawn clothing stores until the 80s with the revival of certain styles from the era before. Like I mentioned, that is the version of the poodle skirt that is still popular today. Seeing as the skirt existed earlier in a small younger circle isn’t a sign of a popular style, it became a popular style in the 80s when the revival introduced it to a wider audience. It’s kinda like saying mod was a popular style in 1961-63 when in reality it was a very niche subculture that started gaining popularity with the mod wave and British Invasion of 64, 65, and onwards to 67. Styles can be introduced in one era but not “come around” until much later. At no point did I say that the design of the poodle skirt was invented in the 80s, but classifying it as a “popular style in the 50’s” is a large overreaction based on modern conflations of fashion history. Most “poodle skirts” of the 50s that were worn featured designs other than a poodle or many smaller designs in their embroidery

      My mother is Silent Generation. The poodle skirt thing drives her nuts. "NOBODY wore those!" She was quite the clothes horse in her teens and 20s, followed all the fashion trends, was a size 0 when she got married. Crazily enough, she was a farm girl who worked HARD and could lift more weight than a lot of men! She got paid her farm wage, was clever at sewing and made extra sewing and doing alterations for others, and loved going to town on Saturday nights. Her favorite saying, "Just because I'm a farm girl doesn't mean I can't look fantastic!" always makes me laugh! She's still farming and sewing!

      @@ItsJustKylie- women couldn't have a bank account by themselves until the 70s in some countries (no, not the ones Americans love to call uncivilised after they colonised or made war with them but the "civilised" ones) and were considered stock value for multiple reasons and do you think they truly had an entire choice of what they were supposed to wear when wearing pants for them was considered a crime? No. No, they didn't. That's why some women and even men had tried to change things around by demonstrating this sexism. I ain't dissing on the american 1950s aesthetic I love this fashion style but it would be great for people to not dismiss the fact those time periods were awful for women and even worse for queer and people of colour. Don't get it twisted oppressed groups never chose their places.
