Advice from someone who cuts her own hair:
*Step 1: Know your hair.*
Is it wavy, curly, straight, thick or thin? What kind of hairstyles compliment that type of hair? When you cut wavy hair short, it suddenly becomes much more curly and unpredictable, keep this in mind when choosing a style. Sometimes you have to be realistic, if your hair is not the right type, certain looks just won't come out right on you. Trust me, I've tried.
*Step 2: Don't.*
*Step 2.5: Once you've done all the proper research, sit on the idea for awhile.*
We all get impulsive and want to chop off all our hair sometimes, that doesn't mean you'll still feel that way in a few days or even 6 seconds after you've done it.
*Step 3: ALWAYS leave the length at least a few inches longer than what you actually want. **2:58*
Look at how it behaves, whether it curls up way farther than you thought it would, or sits patiently like you were hoping it would. You can always cut more, but once it's off you have to live with the consequences. Think of it like you're sculpting a statue out of marble, you chip away at it bit by bit, don't go straight for the sledge hammer. You can get a new chunk of marble, but you can't just get more hair.
*Step 4: When you cut you should never ever ever be "sawing" at it with your scissors. **0:15*
If you are, you have taken too much hair, take smaller chunks at a time. It's not a race. Nice clean chops, then even it all out once you've got the length of it done.
*Step 5: Have someone check the back.*
*Step 6: Consider settling. **7:50** **8:14*
Sure, it didn't come out like the pictures, but maybe you'll just be the kind of person who has a bowl cut for awhile. Perhaps you'll discover something about yourself. Like how much you hate bowl cuts.
*Step 7: Get a professional to fix it. **7:21*
I'm not a stylist, I'm just giving my piece. Any hairstylists out there wanna sound off in the comments I'm game for suggestions.
Addendum:
I don't know a lot about dyeing since I haven't done it since my weird phase in middle school where I felt like I needed a different color of the rainbow every few months but the best I can tell you is READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Especially for bleach, there should be a guide on the box for what color/type hair you have and how strong bleach you need to get a certain color. A common mistake is people frying their hair because they use a bleach that's way way too aggressive and also let it sit too long. (9:27 seriously for the amount and type of hair, or really in general- 2 hours is way way WAY too long. "Rule of thumb: at-home bleaching generally should not exceed 45 minutes." -google)
Thicker/darker hair needs strong bleach in multiple passes, but thin/light hair might require you to do it sections at a time rather than all at once so the parts you did first don't end up fried white and the back orange. (experiment with a SMALL section in the back of your head, see how it turns out, adjust accordingly)
But bleach is one of those things you really should leave to the professionals, it's an aggressive chemical. I had my friends step dad bleach my hair in a dank garage and once it turned out adorable strawberry blonde and the second time it turned to straw.

Ok rewording this, if you want to cut ur hair at home, good luck, but there’s a chance it won’t turn out ok and once it’s cut it’s gone so if you want to take that risk go for it. This is from someone who would take a random pair of scissors and just cut something and regret it right after (this happens a lot to me). Sometimes someone untrained can do a good job and I’m not saying their not, just once you cut it’s gone and you have to wait for it to grow back. If you know you could mess up badly I would recommend going to a good rated salon and doing it there. (if ur cutting bangs, don’t already cut it short, cut it little by little until ur satisfied also when you cut don’t pull it down it will bounce back up a little ) I would just recommend cutting ur hair with someone u trust. Also I’m not saying cutting urself is bad, just some people want to trust that their hair will look like how they want but it doesn’t apply to everyone. If you are gonna cut ur own hair, research and make sure you know want ur doing so you live to regret ir end up in the ER. Good luck

When I did it I watched the fails too. I realized people tend to cut it wayyy too short to fix, so I cut it a lot longer than I wanted it to be. Then I tried something I saw my hairdresser do, which is go at them with scissors vertically rather than horizontally until I got the length I wanted. It sorta feathered them and made them a lot more cute than choppy and straight
