The most interesting relationship in the whole book isn't the relationship between Scarlett and Rhett, or Scarlett and Ashley, but Scarlett and Melanie.
Yes, they were great parallels together. They are completely different and fill each other. Scarlett is a brain, while Melanie is a heart. Melanie always respected her bravery, and Scarlett is the first and almost only reason why Melanie and her son is alive. Melanie has become stronger thanks to love toward Scarlett. When she was only female in the new Atlanta who supported Scarlett, she showed her strength and love. Scarlett also realized that even if she loses everything, Melanie will stay with her. It might seem as a toxic frienship, but I do not think so. It was very emotional moment when Scarlett, sick and dying, somehow remembered herself rescuing Melanie and her baby when the city was bombarded. And at the end of the book Scarlett clearly realizes that she loves Melanie, that was great. I also liked the relationships between Mommy and Scarlett, Scarlett and soldier from who lived in Tara(I cant remember his name). Off topic, but when I think about Rhet in deep, he was such a bad person, the money he got probably was needed by many innocent lives and he only started act kind and good was after the birth of her daughter. Maybe he is past influenced him, but I do not wanted him be with Scarlett.
If you go to the Margaret Mitchell museum in Atlanta, they make it very clear that Margaret Mitchell believed Melanie was the heroine of the novel because she endured every horror Scarlett did and kept her honor and dignity.
The reason Scarlett fell so deeply in love with Ashley is because he exuded all the grace and gentleness that she lacked in herself. She grew to love Rhett, but really he was like her mirror image... a dominant personality, and nothing that she yearned for since she was the same type of person. We always yearn for what we think is missing in ourselves. Ashley adored Scarlett but he could never reciprocate because she just wasn't a safe bet for marriage... Melanie was stability.
Agree, except I always thought that Scarlett fell in love with the image or the idea of Ashley and not him as a man. It's really clear in the book that she is in love with an illusion and not the reality, though it does come through in the movie, too, especially upon subsequent viewings.
Also, there's one thing in the book the movie didn't touch on. When Ellen O'Hara is sick and delirious before she dies she calls out for "Phillippe", a cousin she had been desperately in love with even after she married Gerald.. Scarlett of course was clueless what Ellen was raving about, but Mammy knew and she hushed everyone up. This kind of hinted about there being a parallel between Ellen and Scarlett and their obsessive love for the wrong man. The book is full of subtleties and if you only saw the movie you're missing out.

She was a kid at the beginning of the story , only 16 and he was 35 so of course she was silly and wasn't sure about her feelings. He was much older and so the wiser. I think they were both too much alike, two very dominant people and she loved Ashley for he was everything she wasn't. Had it been modern days they would just date for a couple of weeks and she would dump him but back then marriage was the only option and they were apart for most of the war time so she was living her dream like a teenager would do.
I always laugh uncontrollably at how Rhett reacts to Scarlett's theatrics!! They were truly made for each other; a shame that Scarlett saw this when it was too late!! 💘 👗 😍 👡 😊 🌈
I will never forget seeing this for the first time in 1961, when I was 13 years old. I knew it was about Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, taking place during the Civil War, but that's all I knew. In the novel, Margaret Mitchell foreshadows this moment by describing the scene: "The sofa's high back reared up like some large, sleeping animal." But, I saw the film with my girlfriends before I read the book. When Clark Gable rose up off that sofa, compounding Scarlett's humiliation at Ashley's rejection, we all exclaimed, "Oh no!" aloud in the theater. I'll never forget the shock of that moment. The small Texas town where I saw it is not the same and the theater on the town square is long gone, but that moment will stay with me forever.

I love Leslie Howard's performance here. His movements are so elegant and so is the way he talks. He might not be the most suitable actor for this film in terms of youth, but apart from that, his work was perfect in the whole film.
I have always felt that he grew to be better than Scarlett. Fatherhood really changed him, and I think some of his most poignant characterization comes from the scenes after Bonnie’s death, when he’s mourning her with all the lights on. And any scene with he and Melanie also gives me more respect for him.
Ha ha ha . There' ll never be another Clark Gable . What a genius piece of work . A timeless classic . That movie could have been made last month . Timeless classic indeed .

It was a close call but Robert donat won best actor in the end for goodbye Mr chips. I've seen it and I can see why the Oscar went to him. That movie made me cry.
Mukhtar gable played himself. I love him for that but it's not oscar worthy. I think he has admitted he is like that in real life. However, that's what makes his movies so good.
That scene sizzles like the day it was released, the chemistry between Clark and Vivien is absolutely magnificent even if they didn't quite like each other that much but it made for great cinema history.
I KNOW! people don't look at the movie in-depth, they just take the things how they are. i might sound ridiculous, but this movie was showing how terrible the war was, not how good slavery was... the war ruined people's lives... it ruined the slaves' lives, the soldier's lives, and even Scarlett's life.
@@sethwiseman1017 yeah of course it did, they were starving and living in the same conditions as scarlett post war because they ran out of food and supplies. did you watch the whole movie?

I believe Scarlett and Rhett are meant for each other, they made a great couple. Sometimes people just do not realize how they are for each other, they keep chasing illusions instead.
lol, Rhett was probably just chilling on the couch when he heard them come in and start arguing, probably thinking "oh man this is awkward. The longer I stay the worse it will be if they find out I'm here."
I think when Ashley implied of 'loving' Scarlet, he meant that he loved her 'zest for life' and her direct/fiery personality. He idealizes her similar to the way Scarlet idealizes him. But Ashley never quite saw her as a life partner for him.
In the book, he was very attracted to her sexually but he knew that wasn't love and that they'd be completely incompatible as husband and wife. But of course he couldn't explicitly tell her that, esp during that era, and was a total jerk for stringing her along, leading her to mistake his attraction for love, causing her to hold on to her infatuation.
She was so beautiful, and like grace kelly, her beauty was all NATURAL...unlike the freak show botoxed trout pout silocone injected plastic surgery addicted "stars" we gave to endure today. Vivien Leigh was very beautiful, and she was BORN that way.
+queen victoria Do you think Queen Victoria thought America was primitive during the civil war? I think she was Queen during the era covered in Gone With The Wind.
Margaret Mitchell practically moulded a living, breathing woman out of clay when she created Scarlett. She's conceited, vain, spiteful, petty and occasionally mind-bogglingly stupid, but I think Scarlett is one of the best female characters ever written. You can really see why someone like Rhett lost his peace of mind to her.
She's also hard-working as no one else, loyal to a fault (enough to save Melanie's life just because she had promised Ashley) and smart enough to change when circumstances did, so she ends up being the main breadwinner in her family at the ripe age of... twenty? She feeds everyone in her family, taking the toll against her reputation in her quest for money. The family is angry (Suellen with good reason), but they take the money nonetheless.
Scarlett was good. She did great things. Scarlett was had more of her Irish ancestry and saw things more pragmatically. We are seeing the events from what she did and what she really thought... But. How many of us would be as unselfish as she despite our true thoughts??? That is the question of life
Minty she’s not stupid. She’s YOUNG. She’s stupid about relationships, but in the book she pens several businesses. In the book it’s really clear she truly thinks Rhett doesn’t love her.
Scarlett O’Hara, was the first character, if I’ve read correctly, in literature to be the protagonist WITH many, If not all, attributes normally dispensed to the antagonist. She is all the things you say, much more though. She was very smart. As Margaret Mitchell wrote in the book that she was surprising able to do complex Arithmetic in her head without writing it down. She was a extremely successful business woman . She was modern and way ahead of her time. Her biggest Achilles hill was her imaginary over romanticize perspective of love .
I just watched this movie yesterday, after 78 years... Gone with the wind is the umpteenth evidence that old movies are by far better than the recent ones. As for my impression, well, there's nothing much to say, just incredibly beautiful, brilliant plot, brilliant interpreations (Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable simply impressive), brilliant dialogues. The only flaw was Ashley's actor, as somebody commented, his interpretation was boring and his appearance actually unrealistical... I'm not gay, but Ashley can't compete with Rhett, although he seems very elegant and well-educated, I just don't understand how Scarlett could have prefered him to Rhett. Allegedly the book made a better job describing Ashley, the movie did it wrong, but that's okay, this movie is anyway a masterpiece
Remember that scarlett was a 16 yr old teenager at the beginning of the book and the movie so her idea of manliness was that of a teenager- ashley was a romantic teen obsession and a fantasy that she remained in love with for years- in contrast rhett is a much more mature relationship involving a patrnership, friendship and eventually love

Vivien Leigh here. Vivien Leigh in the Streetcar. Scarlett and Blanche. Two completely different characters played by the same wonderful talented woman. How amazing she was, I can't breathe.
Sometimes people forget the work of art and focus on the fact that this took place during a controversial time. While I don't blame them, I still think it's a wonderful movie, well written, well acted, and well executed.

The protagonist is uncompelling and manipulative and the story is trash from a narrative standpoint, nostalgia or not this is quite dull. I don't think any movie should be banned, not even this one, but only the visuals and the acting are great. Writing...not really the best storytelling. Edit : Anyway only the comments that discuss the movie are interesting, sad trolls are funny at best

i literally just finished the book and i relate to that so mucj
much*
here's the thing you are not supposed to like her.
see she loves him but in her way, a bit different

After that, it sure did LOL
The insults from the 30s are so simple. Yet still burn 😂
And it was said that Clark Gable himself was more than just a mere "gentlemen."
I would give my right arm to be able to move my eyebrows like Clark Gable.

But then you'd only have one arm.

The small Texas town where I saw it is not the same and the theater on the town square is long gone, but that moment will stay with me forever.

the best female performance ever...love you Vivian leigh
Yes,she was incredible! She was so passionate.
Scarlett O'Hara is the greatest and the most unforgattble female character in movie history.. Sorry Ellen Ripley!
Darwaxion Ripley is the best sorry man.
Agreed!
apples to oranges comparison
The Wraith guess she never read the book he’s not that into her
Darwaxion so is Blanch Dubois, both played by Vivien Leigh
Rhett Butler has the greatest first line and greatest final line in film history
Frankly My Dear, I don't give a damn! Rhett Butler knew exactly was Scarlet was and Vivien Leigh was perfect as Scarlett she won 2 oscars.
I love Leslie Howard's performance here. His movements are so elegant and so is the way he talks. He might not be the most suitable actor for this film in terms of youth, but apart from that, his work was perfect in the whole film.
Agreed. And how gentle he is in turning Scarlett down…
Watch the play of three micro-expressions on Ashley's face immediately after the slap. Remarkable acting.
Clark gable is soo dreamy. Man i wish i could time travel in the 40s to see him
one of greatest movies ever.even after all this years this movie is still epic !
best movie couple ever !
Vivien Leigh was so gorgeous.
Everyone who has seen the movie quickly grows fond of Rhett. And everyone who has read the book falls in love with him.
I have always felt that he grew to be better than Scarlett. Fatherhood really changed him, and I think some of his most poignant characterization comes from the scenes after Bonnie’s death, when he’s mourning her with all the lights on. And any scene with he and Melanie also gives me more respect for him.
I admit I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie and I love it. Happy holidays! Merry Christmas! 🎄 ⛄ ❤️
Rhett - yes.
Gable - no.

Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor were the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe should be included in this group of Most Beautiful too.
deb310red Audrey Hepburn yes, Marilyn Monroe not so much. She was the most overrated beauty of all time.
+audrey hepburn Marilyn Monroe defined beauty. Tbh i think vivien leigh is overrated as far as beauty is concerned but then next to Gable or Brando anyone would look second-best
I'm surprised that Gable didn't win an academy award for this performance. Yes this movie won plenty of accolades, but his performance really made this film great, alongside Vivian Leigh.

It was a close call but Robert donat won best actor in the end for goodbye Mr chips. I've seen it and I can see why the Oscar went to him. That movie made me cry.

keimo2007 I don't think so, it's a really great classic. May not be your type of film, but I certainly enjoyed it.
Mukhtar gable played himself. I love him for that but it's not oscar worthy. I think he has admitted he is like that in real life. However, that's what makes his movies so good.
The casting for Scarlett was a long rigorous process, but the casting directors picked the right one at the end. BOY did they pick the right one.
80 years later, and we’re still talking about those two. Jesus, Selznick knew he had it in the bag with Vivian and Clark.❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s crazy they’re like 4-5 generations above us and the quality of this video is so sicke
Have you watched the whole movie? Give it a try!
Because the movie was remastered.
Gone with wind is proudly American Classic movie that Shows every Holliday and i won't get tired watching it..
Ahha, beautiful Vivien Leigh, the perfect embodiment of Scarlett O'Hara.
That scene sizzles like the day it was released, the chemistry between Clark and Vivien is absolutely magnificent even if they didn't quite like each other that much but it made for great cinema history.
Who's here after that HBO Max controversy?
I saw the movie today. The best movie of all time!
I KNOW! people don't look at the movie in-depth, they just take the things how they are. i might sound ridiculous, but this movie was showing how terrible the war was, not how good slavery was... the war ruined people's lives... it ruined the slaves' lives, the soldier's lives, and even Scarlett's life.
Ruined the slaves lives? Sure....
@@sethwiseman1017 yeah of course it did, they were starving and living in the same conditions as scarlett post war because they ran out of food and supplies. did you watch the whole movie?
They brought the movie back with a well made disclaimer as an introduction, which is the best way to handle old movies like this.
@THe Guinness man No one is "obsessed with black people." People are "obsessed" with calling out the BS and unfairness in our past and present, to create a better future. I could sit here and tell you about the BS and unfairness that white folks are suffering (jobs gone, opioid epidemic, out of wedlock birth rate at 32% and rising), but that might upset you as well . . . .
I believe Scarlett and Rhett are meant for each other, they made a great couple. Sometimes people just do not realize how they are for each other, they keep chasing illusions instead.
U said it perfectly
lol, Rhett was probably just chilling on the couch when he heard them come in and start arguing, probably thinking "oh man this is awkward. The longer I stay the worse it will be if they find out I'm here."
1:28 "Has a war started?" That line aged poorly in 1939...
His first like is awesome, and his last line is awesome. Nice parallel: Clark Gable enters the film like a boss, and eventually exits like a boss!
And he hates playing this role because it is in a "woman's picture"....
Rechazado pero jamás derrotado
And goes steady througout the film as a boss.
“Has the war started?” 😂
Vivien Leigh deserved her Oscar for her performance as Scarlett!
Thank you lady for your wonderful work, when you were alive.
These two are perfectly cast... with a clever (& a bit risqué) script... & their screen presence... PERFECTION!!!
Scarlett was so beautiful and an amazing actress
The dress is gorgeous
she looks stunning
and the hair .. i just can’t
What an amazing actress. I never tire of watching this movie and her portrayal. Just breathtaking
For me, one of the best movies ever
This clip and on DVD does not do justice to how beautiful this film is on the big screen.
Clark Gable played the hell out of this role. Nobody else could ever measure up to his performance.
MGM thought so, too.
So did Vivien Leigh! She won an Academy Award for her stunning portrayal of Scarlett.
.37 that “ Coward” was so British , it came out with a scone and earl grey . My God , I love this woman .

She envisioned Miriam Hopkins in the role.
Her biggest Achilles hill was her imaginary over romanticize perspective of love .
one of best movies ever made
I just watched this movie yesterday, after 78 years...
She was attracted to his dignity and calm demeanor - like her mother's. Something she lacked.
UA-cam has rearranged all the comments so that we wont see that everyone is mad about this take down. I am black and I'm against this take down
This is not true. UA-cam has not shown recent comments at the top for ages. I don’t know what their algorithm is up to but the comments are jumbled up in every video

1:42 Sir, you are no Gentleman!
And you Miss are no Lady !
😂😂😂
A classic. And to think there are some that wish to ban this work of art.
Sometimes people forget the work of art and focus on the fact that this took place during a controversial time. While I don't blame them, I still think it's a wonderful movie, well written, well acted, and well executed.
picarochi Define the 'some people' properly.Leftist nutjobs who want to take away everything we grew up with. They dont have power anymore, we took it away from them, so you dont have to be so deferential anymore.

Too funny, I laughed out loud! XD
It's impressive how they could make a color movie in 1939
Ashley was right. He and Melanie were perfect for each other. I always thought Ashley was too wimpy for Scarlett! She and Rhett WERE the perfect match...both strong and independent characters. GWTW has been and always will be my favorite film of all time.
Read the book if you haven't! You will love Gone With the Wind even more. It's so much more in depth, even though the movie does a pretty good job of adapting the book.

Lol yeah. How are you doing today ?
I admire how actor Leslie Howard politely exited the room just like a true gentleman after Scarlet slapped him in the face. You don't see men like that anymore that treat women with respect and honor.
Why would men treat women with respect and honor if they don't respect and honor men? Well he walked away cause she wasn't worth arguing and her slap had zero impact, IOW the stereotypical princess character, but most importantly cause it's a movie lol.
