There was a sequel written in the 1980s I believe but according to the original author the story ended where it ended. The fog to me is a metaphor of it never being clear whether Rhett and Scarlett were ever together again.
That's probably because you didn't read the book. It's very clear that Rhett is done. He's not angry at all. He pities Scarlett which horrifies her. As we all know, once you pity someone you adored, it's over.

Clark Gable was born to portray this role, and MGM hit this out of the park when they filmed it. What I love about this scene is how we are shown how a manly man who’s been so ungratefully scorned, so graciously yet pointedly leaves his ungrateful woman. Guys, this is how it should be done should it happen to you. Make it about you even though it’s really all about THEM. Right in front of them out of nowhere and when they least expect it, just get up, finish packing, give an “oh by the way, I’m leaving you so YOU can finally be happy,” and then immediately leave to avoid argument even if they cry . . . Text book. I love it.
"That's your misfortune" is probably the coldest response to an "I love you." 🤣 That's more profound to me than his final line, but unfortunately, it is so relatable. Relationships require hard work and HEART work by both parties, and for one to constantly give of themselves while the other hardly does the same is excruciating. This is an excellent example of why love is not enough to maintain a union with someone else. It really isn't. Sadly, not only in our favorite films but in life, some people learn too late. It's a shame because they cheat themselves and a loved one out of something that has the potential to be so beautiful. Humans.....glad I'm not one. 🤣
Most marriages fail because simply God is not involved in their relationship. Premarital sex, adultery, wouldn’t be issues if God was involved in every phase of a relationship. Men and women will always fail when they depend on themselves. How many books are there about true happiness found in this world ?? None that I know of, born again Christians can claim they have Joy, which is what you call lasting happiness. One thing born again Christians do is share the Gospel so others can see what it takes to have Joy in this world, but we also aren’t concerned about our lives here when we have eternal life with Jesus to look forward to. 🙏🏻✝️❤️
OUTSTANDING. I never really got how GREAT CLARK was in this scene....stone cold serious with a blend of sadness, regret and yet compassion. Rhett took so much from her and she of course was Scarlet Clark should have won an Oscar
I always feel that in the original book, Rhett looked more tired than in here. Here he was still able to carry a smile, but in my impression from the book, he was entirely worn out, not having any emotions
One of my all time favorite movies. It’s been about 20 years since I last went to the movie theater. There is nothing I would pay to see. I would rather stay home and watch classics like this one.
If i had to keep one movie it would be Gone With The Wind. What a terrific cast actors. I have loved this since i first saw it. A classic in its own right. Never get tird of viewing it. Have several copies but when its on tv i still watch it. No movie will ever take its place for me.
Now this is how an epic film should end. Thank you, Rhett Butler. (I can't believe I live down the street from Tara. Many don't know that the house is still there in the middle of Culver City.)
Yes after walking on him all that time, was he supposed to accept her late realization. No i dont think so. AND HE STILL LOVE HER, HE JUST COULDN'T TAKE ANY MORE. I READ THE BOOK BEFORE SEEING THE MOVIE. MY FAVORITE BOOK.
It's not well-known, but this is actually not the final scene of "Gone With the Wind". The final scene was deleted just before the movie was released. There we see Scarlett at the front gate of Tara. She looks down the road in the direction of the ruins ofTwelve Oaks where Ashley used to live, the man she no longer wants. The road is deserted. Scarlett then looks down the road in the other direction, toward Atlanta, where Rhett, the man she does love, no longer lives. The road in that direction is also empty. Scarlett turns away and walks back toward the house...alone.
@@andyroo9381I'm not aware of that final-final scene being available anywhere, but some time ago I saw a video here on You Tube that showed black-and-white pictures of this scene being filmed. Also you may see a GWTW picture of Vivien Leigh standing at a gate: that is a still from the missing scene. -- I haven't seen GWTW in quite a while but my recollection is that it shows a picture of Scarlett standing at the gate and that fits in with the deleted scene. -- I read Margaret Mitchell's biography "The Road to Tara" and was interesting to learn that Katie Scarlett was not the heroine's original name in the manuscript. She was called Pansy, but because that was also a derogatory term for gay men the name was changed. -- I' ve also read the Scarlett was based, at least in part, on real-life Viriginia Felton who became the first woman to serve in the Congress or Senate of her state or maybe on a national level. Too Virgnia Felton's husband was a physician and he actually lived the scene at the train station where the soldier were lying on the ground as far as could be seen.

Scarlett went through so much, unprepared, alone. She helped so many people during the war and yet she was abandoned by a man who could not deal with her.
I’ve watched this movie about three or four times and fascinates me how the yrs of love for Scarlett fade into nothingness. Nothing she could’ve said or done at that point would EVER bring it back. I loved my Ex Husband for nearly 30 years, and even though I should have divorce him the day BEFORE I met him, I never thought there’d be a day when I could stop loving him. The love was NOT replaced with hate, thank God, but that love? It’s as if that love had never been born.
Who took care of Melanie and her baby on the way back to Tara? And who took care of her father and rest of the family at the once mighty Tara? Though Scarlett didn't have many moments of caring for others.
I don’t care what any modern kid might say is the greatest movie of all time. Gone With The Wind is by far the greatest movie ever made and to think that it was the Civil War that served as its background. Clearly David Selznick knew how to cast this movie and did so with regard to how it would play out some many years after it premiered. The cast was incredible and delivered everything they had to make Gone With The Wind the perfect movie of 1939. And to boot, there are some great scenes that are still as iconic as the day they were shot, especially the ending. Everyone who sees this film for the first time even now, thinks it’s over when Clark Gabel utters his famous line, but the last two minutes when Scarlett (Vivian Leigh) recalls what her father says about Tara is the most powerful scene for an ending. The best part overall though is Victor Fleming also directed the other classic 1939 film, The Wizard Of Oz and both films in their own ways are Classic films that nobody should miss seeing. Yes, there have been many great films made since these two, but for the Golden Era of Hollywood (prior to the great musicals), these two are keystone films that truly make movie making a great art.
I feel like people who cheer Rhett leaving Scarlett are missing the point: it's not a victory the man is hollowed out and broken not to mention he was cruel to her too especially in the books they toned him down in the movie.
The book showed what a heatless monster Scarlett was, too. Rhett never pretended to be anything he wasn't but he would have moved heaven and earth for Scarlett but she spit on him every chance she got. He HAD to leave her, no other way to end the story.
I saw this on the big screen a few weeks ago, and I got the goosebumps when Tara's theme, with the choir started playing. What a majestic ending to a magnificent motion picture.
750,000 died in that war to the last assessment done, I think. The Wounded topped twice as many dead. The cost of the war in destruction and reconstruction was over 3 Billion in just 4 years. The U.S. could not survive something like it again if you scaled up the casualties and the damage even by 10 percent.
With narcissists, it’s always about them. Poor Scarlett. She learned too late. The old adage goes just as this scene plays out. Sorry is good. But it’s just good enough.
Great film and novel. If I had a daughter, then I would make this required reading and viewing. Its a timeless parable. I would hope she gets the lesson before embarking on her life.
My great-grandmother is responsible for the "WORD". She was President of the censoring committee in ATL. Two weeks before the premiere, she permitted the word to be used in the movie. She was bribed by Selznick. LOL!!!

You need to rewatch, Gone With The Wind. That movie will tell you everything you need to know about farming. “Land is the only thing that matters. The only thing that lasts”. How do you sell the dreams of your parents and grandparents and maybe your great grandparents? They planted corn using three horses, two rows, and a check wire. Every 40 inches, they heard the click as the planter dropped 5 to a hill. All day they heard that while they breathed in the dust that the horses and planter stirred up. Picking corn by hand. 100 bushel was a really good day. One in your hand and one in the air, all day. They worked their lives away for us now to farm with GPS, quad tracks, cross rotors, and advancements they could have never dreamed of. And you think we should sell the family farm and the memories of it? Land is the only thing that matters. It is the only thing that lasts.

One thing born again Christians do is share the Gospel so others can see what it takes to have Joy in this world, but we also aren’t concerned about our lives here when we have eternal life with Jesus to look forward to. 🙏🏻✝️❤️
Yes!! You articulated perfectly.❤ That line ... that's your misfortune is so final.
Great post thank you.
😂
Not a human? So what do you think you are? 🤔
The number one☝️ Movie🍿 Best classic❤🎉👍👍😎
Classic ❤🎉
I swear I haven't fully watched this movie as of yet in 2024!! A bucket list for sure...
Definitely you will not regret watching it
I guarantee it is worth the time
OUTSTANDING. I never really got how GREAT CLARK was in this scene....stone cold serious with a blend of sadness, regret and yet compassion. Rhett took so much from her and she of course was Scarlet Clark should have won an Oscar
All time BEST movie ever!!
Gone 😂
Book was great loved this movie❤
I always feel that in the original book, Rhett looked more tired than in here. Here he was still able to carry a smile, but in my impression from the book, he was entirely worn out, not having any emotions
One of my all time favorite movies. It’s been about 20 years since I last went to the movie theater. There is nothing I would pay to see. I would rather stay home and watch classics like this one.
I don’t go to the movies or watch TV any longer, to much woke crap on it that it has ruined everything.
This film and Imitation of Life has the most painful ending.
As close to a perfect movie I've ever seen
The greatest movie ever
One of the best movies of all time😊❤
"Gone with the wind", and "Casablanca" two greatest movies ever. I'm so glad Hollywood did not remake, or God forbid make a sequel of these movies.
A masterpiece, indeed! Superb!
One of the greatest scenes in movie history.
I certainly never knew this. Where can I find this deleted ending scene?
@@andyroo9381 I'm not aware that the final-final scene of "Gone With the Wind" is available anywhere, but there is or was a You Tube video of black-and-white photos showing the scene being filmed. I don't recall on what channel this was, but hopefully a search will locate it.
There will never be another such as this...not another CG or VL. And the famous byline FRANKLY MY DEAR I DONT DAMN...❤
My all time favorite movie❤
Fun fact: This was the last movie not scored by John Williams or James Horner and not distributed by Universal or Fox to be the highest-grossing movie in the world until Endgame in 2019, 80 years later
This was the highest grossing movie to end with a fog scene.
My all time favorite film GWTW, Rhett and Scarlett belong together, it's their destiny... ❤ New Orleans
You think by saying Iam sorry will make right ✅️
My god still the best film i have ever seen and i am 35!! Ive seen it all, leigh absolutely destroyed every actress ever in history...the greatest of all time.
-"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" Well, THAT is the statement we all must say to some point in our lives!!😎😎
Directions to Scarlett's whole problem and a nutshell she thinks about it tomorrow and she thinks only of herself and not others
Who took care of Melanie and her baby on the way back to Tara? And who took care of her father and rest of the family at the once mighty Tara? Though Scarlett didn't have many moments of caring for others.
She was acting like a spoilt child.
Heartbreaking she realised she loved him Too late! Film should have showed them getting back together after that scene. Having a reconciliation
A motto Scarlet O’Hara „ I will think about it tomorrow” towarzyszy mi przez całe życie i w wielu niedobrych momentach pomagało przetrwać.
"TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY"
the last words of this film.
NOT what Rhett says.
When ever I watched this scene, I had goosebumps.
When she says " where should I go what should I do?" Rhett knows again she only cares about herself, not him. She never loved anyone ever.
But that 's wrong . She loved her father and mother . She loved the land and in her determined way she took care of everyone .
@fightback397 no she didn't. She "loved" out of necessity for her own personal profit. Same for land, same for the parents who spoiled her.
@@8dhe7dhehdueb
Lov3d out of necessity ? Those were het parents that she took care when they needed her . She worked the land and she defeded it and defended the house .
What type of love do you want ? Candle light dinners and red roses ?
Scarlett character is placed in a civil war context and love is not the first thing that comes to mind when in a such a situation .
@fightback397 the moment he leaves her, she immediately goes back to her "mindset', land blabla new day blabla. She was not the person to love and especially him. Cba analyzing.
Scarlet just wants what she thinks that she cannot have. Simple as that!
As a 14 year old boy, I agree. I watched this in class today, and the ending gave me goosebumps 😆. I absolutely love the soundtrack.
snow white is what every one was talking about throught 1938-1939
until this classic stepped in :D
I'm watching this in 2024. It's been 85 years since it came out.
This movie was released in 1939, the same year WW2 started in Europe.
Neprevazidjen film,NAJBOLJI SVIH VREMENA.❤❤NIKADA NI JEDAN FILM NE MOZE DOSTIĆI,,PROHUJALO SA VREMENOM,,❤
One of the best movies. My mom said when Clark Cable cursed everyone let out a "sigh." Now the curse words are so filthy.
I saw this on the big screen a few weeks ago, and I got the goosebumps when Tara's theme, with the choir started playing. What a majestic ending to a magnificent motion picture.
How many months is it going to take for you to fix the title? He’s Clark Gable, not Gabel.
Rhett Butler and Mr Darcy borh remain as my favourite heroes...❤❤😂😂
This movie stays in my heart!!❤❤
750,000 died in that war to the last assessment done, I think. The Wounded topped twice as many dead. The cost of the war in destruction and reconstruction was over 3 Billion in just 4 years. The U.S. could not survive something like it again if you scaled up the casualties and the damage even by 10 percent.
750,000.., unbelievable..,tfs
BEST MOVIE EVER!
Is it an exaggeration to say that this is the most iconic scene in film history?
No, no at all.
With narcissists, it’s always about them. Poor Scarlett. She learned too late. The old adage goes just as this scene plays out. Sorry is good. But it’s just good enough.
Clássico absoluto da história do Cinema.
One my favorite movies ❤❤❤
Clark Gable and Cary Grant the greats. Madly in love with Gable after seeing this movie.❤❤❤
Great movie
Clark Gable was great Vivian Lee also just a wonderful movie brings back memories
And that statement frankly deer, I don’t give a damn I always remember
Great film and novel. If I had a daughter, then I would make this required reading and viewing. Its a timeless parable. I would hope she gets the lesson before embarking on her life.
When he asked her if Melanie said anything else, Scarlett should have just said, "No." That probably would have prevented him from walking out
Younger generation will never know these classics, such a pity
Please forgive Scarlette. Wishing Mr. Rhett and miss scarlette be happy ever after.
God, this movie looks so gorgeous!
Un film pentru eternitate .
My great-grandmother is responsible for the "WORD". She was President of the censoring committee in ATL. Two weeks before the premiere, she permitted the word to be used in the movie. She was bribed by Selznick. LOL!!!
Amazing movie
I read the book probably 6 times and always fascinated that Scarlet had 3 children in the book but only one 1️⃣ n the movie-- book has so much more and you get to use your beautiful imagination!!!!!
Kalo di novel aslinya ,
Scarlet itu udah janda 3 anak pas nikah dg Rhet butler .
Sama Rhet cuma punya 1 anak , itupun akhirnya mati kecelakaan 😢
Wuuihhh , makanya Rhet LANGSUNG MINGGAT !!!
Biasanya bkl gak laku & bkl janda terus sampe akhir hayat🙏
Ehh gak taunya Rhet cuma jadi cadangan , sementara Scarlet kejar2 Ashley & tunggu Melani mati😂
Itu Rhet gak kira balik .
Janda 3 anak tapi sombong BANGET .
Dari awal masih gadis udah sombong banget sih...
Itu Rhet baik banget , Scarlet janda 3 anak dikawin .
Ehh ternyata... CUMA ban bemper buat kejar2 Ashley .
BUYAARRR .
Rhet gak kira balik ke Scarlet .
Scarlet itu jahat egois BANGET ke Rhet .
Setelah anak tunggal mereka lahir , Scarlet gak mau gitu2 sama Rhet lagi .
Alasan takut gemuk , pengen teruuss cantik sampe tua .
Rhet sampe terpaksa rutin pergi ke PSK 😢
Ehh , gak taunya... Krn Scarlet aslinya masih berharap bisa jadian+ punya anak dg Ashley...!!
Maka cuma mau 1 anak dg Rhet ! Meladeni Rhet gitu2 , sewajarnya pasutri , juga gak mau ...
Bahkan Scarlet ngotot tinggal dekat2 Ashley sambil tunggu Melani mati mendadak😂🙈😵
Rhet cuma ban bemper !
Oh my GOD...🙏
Sori yeee , pikiran hatinya Scarlet bener2 busuk 😑😑
Itu Rhet gak bakal balik ke Scarlet .
Betul2 Gone with the Wind selamanya😅
🙏
Read the book 5 times n cried every time. Saw the movie 2 times but I prefer reading the book. Great, great book
It seemed to me that he wanted her as long as he thought he couldn’t completely have her. But once she told him she loved him he didn’t want her any more.
His decision was made, he was ready to leave BEFORE she told him she loved him. Sometimes, when u r the inly one who constantly is trying ti make things work, there comes a time when u just have to admit that ur partner was terrible to u and u have nothing left to give anymore.
It takes two to Tangle.
