The anticipation for Frontiers has never made me as anxious for the future of the series as I am now. The scope of this game seems huge and Sonic Team definitely seem to be somewhat confident in this compared to the last few games. However, We all now their track record when it comes to this franchise, so it's best to keep expectations cautiously optimistic. The last thing Sonic needs is another 06/Rise of Lyric situation.

Sonic ‘06: A very flawed game that can also be enjoyed as a guilty pleasure and what could’ve been one the best Sonic games up to the ranks of Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis/future consoles) and Sonic Advance 3 had Sega not rushed it so much to late 2006 but gave Sonic Team time to finish it until likely 2008 just before Unleashed!
Sonic Boom: A very flawed game… and that’s pretty much all I can say about this indefensible joke of a game!
      Sonic Frontiers: Likely to rock!

I’m so glad to hear I’m not alone on Colors. I got Colors for my 9th birthday and… it was so depressing. I was wondering where all the characters I loved went, why Sonic is acting so weird, why most of it is slow and 2D, why I need to wait on blue buttons to move elevators for so long. I didn’t like it, and I felt crazy for being the only person who didn’t like this change. I would watch the cutscenes on UA-cam of 06 since I only had a Wii, and think: “wow I wish I had that game instead” I knew it was glitchy but, I still think I would have had more fun with that than being bored with colors

Bro saaaaame. I grew up with the early 2000s era of Sonic with Adventure 1 being the first Sonic game I ever played. I loved all those games growing up but when I first played Colors, I absolutely hated it. The transition from Ryan to Jason wasn't obvious as a kid but it definitely was with Roger and the tone of the story felt so PBS kids rather than an epic tale those earlier 3D games had and the gameplay itself felt so off with stiff controls and level design especially for the 2D sections. Despite that, the Internet made sure I felt like a dumbass for preferring games like Adventure 1/2 and even 06 over Colors because apparently everything I liked about the older games like story and characters were all unnecessary and pointless. While I don't hate Colors now and I don't think it's as bad as people nowadays are making it out to be, it definitely left a stain for me and the future of the franchise and I'm hoping Frontiers will finally rid of the budget mediocrity the 2010's left.

I had Sonic 06 when it first came out as a kid and I loved it. I'm playing Sonic Colors now after all this time and it's pretty great as well. As someone thats been around this scene for a minute, it's pretty weird seeing the pendulum shift from "Sonic has too many characters, get rid of them..." to people wishing they'd see more of them.

Loved this style of video. Hearing your experiences with Sonic and thoughts, really brings some insight; you make really good points in this. I grew up with late 2000s-on, and of course I do have nostalgia with that era, but man, I agree with the blandness of those games. The older games just have so much more life and substance, and I'm really hoping the same for Frontiers. But I digress... Great video, dude. Keep up the good work!

It’s always so interesting to learn about someone else’s history of Sonic. As I watched the video, I began to reflect on my own views towards Sonic. I realized two things that dramatically altered my experience with Sonic. 1) an emphasis on handheld Sonic adventures 2) primarily Nintendo hardware
Technically, my first ever Sonic game was actually Sonic Heroes. It all started when I got a chance to play the game on a gamecube kiosk in McDonalds. That game led to me primarily playing on the gamecube. This moment led to me buying SA2 Battle and loving the high speed linear gameplay and multiplayer races. However, it wasn’t until later on when the wii was released that I decided to purchase the console version of Sonic Colors, the series became a mainstay for me after that. (I got a wii because Sonic was a playable fighter in Brawl) However, the two points I made above started to come into play.
As stated previously, most if not all my early experience with Sonic was derived from a Nintendo console that being the Gamecube and Wii. Once I got my GBA SP, my time with Sonic was spent primarily on a portable.
I played the Sonic Advanced Trilogy and Sonic Battle on GBA, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventures, Sonic Colors on DS, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal, Fire and Ice on 3DS,Sonic Mania, Sonic Forces on Switch. It’s been like this for much of my life. I chose the handheld version over most of the console versions.
That being said, I did play the mainline Sonic games that released on Nintendo’s consoles once I realized that I missed out on a lot of adventures. The key word here though is Nintendo. That means any game released on Playstation or xbox weren’t considered… That meant, I never played the xbox/ps3 versions of 06, Sonic Unleashed and Generations. However, Generations is in a weird spot as one day my brother bought Sonic Generations for our xbox 360 that was received as a gift. I was curious how it differed from the 3DS version and well it BLEW ME AWAY! After that, I became more willing to purchase consoles outside Nintendo for Sonic.
With Sonic Frontiers, I’m still going to purchase the switch version on release, but if I can get a PS5 or play the game with higher performance on the PS4 pro, I’ll definitely double dip.
Sidenote: My favorite Sonic game for a long time was Sonic Colors Wii. I was so hyped for Ultimate, but after playing through the game again via this remaster, I no longer give this game that title. From the bugs and glitches to the dull 2D level design that I was blind to in my younger years, I realized that I don’t have the same opinion towards it anymore. In fact, I don’t even know if I have a favorite Sonic game anymore. I just love the character and speed based gameplay and for me that’s enough to root for the blue blur.
I’ll always look forward to more Sonic games in the future.

With regard to story, I’ll just say this. Sonic Colors story was probably the best out of the meta era personally for me. Sonic Forces’s story was the last straw for the self-deprecating and meta writing for me. I want Sonic to return to Adventure era stories and dialogue with Sonic Frontiers. The older I got, the more I appreciated character development.

I think some of the reasons why 2010 was mod because sega tried hard to please everyone and knowing how divisive people can be it didn't go well. So instead of taking ideas from sonic fans sega is doing their own thing would frontiers.

In my opinion, it’s honestly a good idea. SEGA was trying to please different fans of different eras at the same time, and seeing how that turned out, even I, who liked most of the games that came out from that past decade, have to admit it was a little mid. So, with SEGA doing their own thing for Sonic Frontiers, it’s really hooked my interest on the game.

@@SonicAndre2 It was a terrible idea, they tried to appeal to every sonic fan in existence and because of that we got Forces. They tried to mix in OC's, Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, hell they even pandered to Adventure fans by adding in Chaos and Shadow even though you never even fight them in the game. So what did we get out of this? A mediocre game that bit off more than it can chew, I'm glad that Sega stopped the pandering shit from a 2010's and is making sonic games that don't add in classic sonic or pander to every Sonic Fan in existence.

I mean, yeah; I see where lot of people are coming from, it stings when it feels like something you love starts phoning itself in in a desperate attempt to keep alfoat. I also somewhat agree with your analogy about a kid deliberately making themselves a class clown just to get the bullies to back off. I mean for a long time I thought that alot of the people who were highly critical of the 2010s era were just a bunch of elitist contrarian snobs who act like their perspective or their opinions are the only ones that matter.(I know there are people who are like that, but those are just a vocal minority.) , Now as somewhat more mature person I again see where most of these people are coming from.(I may not always agree with them, but as long as they're not just here to pick fights with people who disagree with them it shouldn't affect me negatively.) Hell, I see alot of similar sentiments come from Paper Mario and Pokemon fans who felt disapointed with the current directions those games were heading with too. All this to say, I get it; there's nothing wrong with demanding higher quality standards from something you know is capable of producing such standards. I also agree that it's just as important to keep your personal expectations in check.

26:39 My theory on Classic Sonic is after 3&K there would've been two outcomes/timelines. In the first timeline the time eater never appears, this is the main canon timeline that transitions to Sonic 4, SA1 etc. But then the second outcome is where the Time Eater does appear and causes the "other dimension" to be created. Robotnik realizing that Eggman's plans never succeeded in taking over the world or defeating Sonic, makes entirely new plans to take over the world. Instead of Sonic 4 and the post 1998 games happening, all of the games pre-1998 (and Mania) take place like Triple Trouble, Knuckles Chaotix, Mania etc.
Although this theory has holes since in both timelines there's inevitable events like what occurs in Shadow the Hedgehog or why doesn't the cast ever transition into their modern designs.

As someone who grew up with the classic games in the 90s it is so refreshing to hear someone orate feelings I've had about the series for years. I should've been a ps1 kid but was a Genesis one and didn't get a new console til the Dreamcast because by then, I was already a fan. While I genuinely love the boost era gameplay I take issue with the most of the stories as well. "Playing it straight" is hitting the nail on the head. That's exactly what myself, and I'm sure many other fans miss from this franchise. I defend the stories and direction of 06 because, even though it was released in the state it was in one can see, if given the time it would have been something special (and yes, it IS SA3). I honestly hate how much game journalism has tainted peoples view of this franchise and even, how much the fans enjoy it. A "7/10" is a not a bad score (5 would technically be an "average" game) and someone's opinion about a game should not affect your own. Only your experience with it should.
Sonic Team KNOWS how to make a great game. They've only ever been stymied by SEGA (who I still like but, business is a bitch) however, it seems like its all coming together in Frontiers. You can see SEGA is on the side of their development house and everyone is pushing for the best quality they can output.
    I'm VERY excited. Unashamedly (always)

id say they regret it, yeah. although most of the original team that made Sonic great are now gone, there are still a select few veterans of SEGA that have a deep understanding and passion for what makes Sonic good. i dont remember his name nor position in development, but the man that keeps getting interviewed for Sonic Frontiers, giving really good insight and information on the game in all his interviews, is one of those people. so while the higher ups who make all the big decisions might have lost touch, i dont think that means they arent aware of this fact, or that theyre unwilling to allow better folks to take control of projects. Frontiers is either gonna be a great testament to this, or completely shut down everything i said. and im praying that the former is the case

Interesting question, but.. I'm honestly not sure. It's possible a FEW people behind the scenes feel guilty, but I don't imagine the corporate execs caring one bit about the franchise. As a whole, though, I'd say they're at least trying to appeal it's fans (Forces being serious was a response to the lacking stories of Colors, Lost World, and Generations; Frontiers going open zone was a response to the linearity and lack of depth in Froces; etc.), but they definitely don't have the same passion for it that they used to.

My first video game was Sonic and the Secret Rings. And yes, I know the gameplay is kinda crap, but I didn't like it for the gameplay. I liked it for the characters for the attitude for the ambition. And I eventually got Sonic Colors and enjoyed it. But something was off. I really liked the gameplay, but I really didnt like the humor. I disliked the cutscenes so much that I skipped every single one and didn't find out what the plot was for years. When I got older I would get every single sonic game I could for any console I had. And when I got Sonic 06 for my 12th birthday, I loved it. I liked the gameplay (yes I did and kinda still do) the music, and the character. I looked past the glitches and saw the game as the epic adventure it was supposed to be. Later I ended up getting SA and SA2 for my Xbox and SA2 became my favorite game of all time. All I want from Sega is to make Sonic cool again. My friends clowned on me for liking Sonic. I was embarassed to even mention that I liked the brand. I just hope Sonic Frontiers returns Sonic to being cool, so my friends see the series as I see it.

I was born into the early 2000s, but I've always loved the amount of passion the older games had. Thanks to the amount of ports and collections available I got to experience a sizeable amount of the library and I have and still continue to cherish it.
Being someone who's being able to experience so much of the franchise I understand how it can be rather split, but I can still find a sense of joy in it all the same.
It's like you said Mugi, passion is the key decider ultimately. It could be classic, modern, adventure or a bleeding card game, but ultimately the form it takes doesn't mean squat unless it is done to a level of competency and sticks true to the franchises ideals and that can only ever be fully achieved with love.

I just find it entirely fascinating that we share so many mutual progressions and experiences that originated from vastly different directions.
I didn't have catalogues to see what was new, I had to use the internet at school and the public library. I...sorta had a Sega CD, but couldn't buy Sonic CD. I got into the comics with what little money my mother could spare, and me and my friends would pretend to be characters from that universe. I didn't understand what the 32X was, but I still was able to play Knuckles Chaotix on an emulator on the PC that grandmother bought for me by going into debt with her Sears credit card. Struggled to catch SatAM on a fuzzy antenna signal in the kitchen at 6 in the morning while everyone else was asleep. I was years late to the Dreamcast, buying it well after it was Discontinued from a pawn shop, grabbing both Adventure and Shuffle with my first bit of money I ever earned for myself in my life, which also provided an emotional boost that was dire for my stability and livelihood...
Yada yada, so on and so forth, I've always wanted to sit down with you at one point and just have a long talk about Sonic to share experiences and feelings to bond over. The future always holds opportunity for that, after all. Love ya, and as always I hope you and Axel are doing well.

I remember how soulless the series started feeling in the 2010s as characters, shonen anime tone, & everything else that made the series what it was got abandoned. For some reason I get the feeling you probably loved the cast of characters too. Tails & Cream were adorable, Sonic, Shadow, & Knuckles were epic, then Amy was hard to explain. The series has been so much less without the excellent cast of characters being playable & they completely stopped using Cream 10 Years ago except for a couple mobile games & cameos in crossover games.

I would say 'Sonic Colors' for the time was a necessary break from all the weird throwing around the series experienced during the late 2000s. Sega though have proven themselves to handle feedback in the most basic way possible. If something didn't work, don't do it again. If something is successful, abuse it to its fullest.
I'm indifferent on the 2010s games. Some of the gameplay is top notch, but the characterisation and writing feel like a retread of 1970s television cartoons, where everything was safe and bland.

Your mob made the 2010s the most toxic era for Sonic, I was abused for saying I liked the Adventure Games better than Generations 10 Years ago & things only got worse as more & more people randomly turned against the Adventure Games. Some simple criticisms against Colors & Generations such as Too much focus on Sonic & Story problems were met with death threats & an ungodly reversal against the older games. I still have PTSD from those days dude! The Fanwar of the mid 2010s was beyond brutal & then you had Sega & Sonic Team making things worse.

This is a very comprehensive an well-done dive into Sonic and it's history in the mainstream/internet culture. It's nice to hear someone bring attention to the very prominent split between the fandom during certain parts of the franchise's lifetime and when it specifically came about, as well as the self-deprecating humor the series pulls which can be a bit sad at times. As a kid, Sonic was very up there for me, it was next to Mario and Dragon Ball when it came to the things I loved most. Admittedly, as I got older my adoration for the series as a whole dwindled naturally but I always found myself coming back.
Though the fandom has a very poor reputation as well, I've also seen that it is capable of creating something good. I LOVED the Sonic animated shorts by Sonic Paradox as a kid, stuff like that partially helped shape my sense of humor and all around jusy provided very fond memories, and thay deserves acknowledgement.
Though many are probably befuddled why so many could still possibly be fans of Sonic after all that has happened, there is a reason, they see the potential that was once active, in the right hand I think they could pull a Generations again but even BETTER in terms of story and assets. Now that will be a game worth playing. I'm keeping my expectations leveled, but I am curious to see what they do with Frontiers and I will definitely be getting it on PS5. Hope the best for it.

I want a return to Adventure for the series, although I would settle for another Sonic Heroes.

I really cannot blame Sonic Team and SEGA for the “Meta Era.” Critic opinions and scores matter to general public image, and if it meant sacrificing a few games by making them simpler and trimming the fat that most didn’t like to better Sonic’s image (IE Sonic 4, Colors, and Generations). And what did the critics really want? A speedy Mario clone. Let’s be real, Sonic as a brand NEEDED Colors and Generations after the “dark age.” The problem is that they got comfortable doing that for too long, causing Lost World and Forces to be a thing, which pushed the limits of this simplification and even critics didn’t like those. And now, the actual fans have gotten restless and desire a return to form, even if it means lower critic scores. Fortunately, Frontiers looks to be at the very least trying and it may be a game that both fans and critics can enjoy.
Also, what you were describing of you experience with Sonic as a kid is basically exactly how everybody who grows up with Sonic experiences the same thing. The only difference was what kinds of games and media were being released at the time and the amount of kid fans. For a while there, Sonic wasn’t bringing in many new fans at all, but the fact that Sonic has popular films, there are now millions of new fans that are kids and will grow up with Frontiers as their first game. So even if us existing Sonic fans don’t like Frontiers, it will inevitably be the new generations Sonic Adventure 2 Battle if you catch my drift. Just sayin, in 10-20 years, expect video essays just like this one talking about how Sonic Frontiers is the last good Sonic game or peoples favorite game, talking about how exciting it was to see those movies in theaters, discover this massive treasure trove of games, and get Sonic Frontiers for Christmas in 2022 as their first brand new game. So whether we existing fans like the game or not, based on quality or personal preference or whatever, it does not matter this time around. Frontiers will be the best selling Sonic game in 10+ years no contest mark my words. Kids will grow up with the movies and whatever kind of game Frontiers ends up being. The only thing we as existing fans can do is accept the fact that times change and simply give each new game a shot and judge it on its own merits rather than comparing it to games from 20+ years ago. That is what I have learned growing up with the series since Sonic Heroes, and I think it has helped me appreciate every Sonic game.

    • @WaterKirby1994

I have to disagree that Sonic 4, Sonic Colors, & Sonic Generations were necessary. You admit yourself that they were mistaken by spending too long in that Era & we all know how easily whatever slight good reviews they brought in were abandoned. Some would argue the real problem was that the Sonic Series was a rebel against the norms of the industry from the beginning & in trying to please the critics it was going to betray the cult following it gained & those critics never had any loyalty to the series & deep down wanted to see it fail the entire time.
The irony is Sonic was doing better (see sales) during the late 2000s than it was during the 2010s making the latter decade the real worst era for the series. The once excellent cast of characters & Shonen Anime tone weren't fat to be trimmed they were much more vital like bone & muscle & really it was a vocal minority that didn't like them. You really didn't hear fans complain about slaughtering everything in their path as Cream in Advance 2, & I remember more complaints to rumors Tails wouldn't be playable in Adventure 2 than character hate over the mech stages that offered a rare playable Eggman. The 2010s introduced Characters have generally been more hated from what I remember, with people often complaining about how awful the Zeti are & the insistence to keep bringing back Zavok.
20 Years ago as a franchise Sonic was probably at its most popular prior to now thanks to Sonic X, the prosperous leap to the GameCube & GBA, & the hype for Sonic Heroes. You are right that this will be seen as peak Sonic for the newer generation thanks to the Movies, Prime, IDW Comics, & Frontiers.

Sonic has gone through so much in his almost 32 year career as a character. As someone who grew up in the Dark Age Games(mainly 06 and Secret Rings), I’ve seen a lot of fans go from loving the series to just not giving a shit about it.
You start with three successful games on the Genesis(and the Sega CD) but the lack of a mainline title on the Sega Saturn caused the first crack in the fanbase(I wasn’t alive at the time, but hearing about X-treme just makes me sad), which thankfully was mended with the release of the Dreamcast came Sonic’s first two successful 3D Outings, but due to Sega’s tarnished reputatione and the colossal failure of the Saturn, the DC was discontinued and Sonic went third party. Sonic got two successful games for the GameCube and three good games for the Game Boy Advance and Sonic X. However, when transitioning to third party they started out with a game where you control not one character, but three, and received mixed reviews. Then you really see the shark getting jumped with the reveal of a gun based game that has slippery controls, a terribly structured story and laughably edgy dialogue. Then when Sega tries to go back to the Adventure roots, they rush Sonic’s 7th Gen debut(06)and cause the game to release as a hot mess that damaged Sonic’s reputation and pissed away all the good will he had built over the last (at that point)15 years. Then they released a on rails shovelware Wii title(that I grew up with) with an Arabian nights story to stop the bleeding from 06, which didn’t work. To calm down the angry fanbase, they then decide to take the boost formula from the DS exclusive Rush games to create Unleashed, a game that is really fast but gets bogged down by the Werehog, an obvious god of war clone that only exists to make the game long enough to be worth $60. Then you got Black Knight which was pretty good. But then….. the cracks REALLY began to show with the third and final sonic riders game being locked onto a broken Xbox 360 peripheral that barely works half the damn time, a 2D game made to please the angry and bitter Genesis fans who were now becoming Adults that had sloppy physics and rehashed levels and a shorter and simpler Sonic Unleashed sequel that examines all the criticisms of the last 7 years of games and while it was good for the time, the aspect of Colors has changed significantly. It has almost no 3D, the story sucks straight ass and the wisps are clearly powers that sonic previous had. To celebrate his 20th anniversary, Generations came and while it’s story was barebones and forgettable, it’s gameplay was pretty good. However, then Sega decided to enter a fucking Wii U deal with Nintendo to create three games, none of which were good: a generic platformer that throws out almost everything a sonic fan likes about the blue rat, a Mario and sonic game that relies too much on Motion controls, and a outsourced game(Rise of Lyric) that has too many bugs and glitches and story problems that it’s close or even worse than 06(and I love 06). Then we were stuck in a drought for two years and then we got the reveal of Sonic Mania and a new game based on an apocalypse. Mania was really well done, being made by fans and getting the highest scores since *2002*, while the “apocalyptic” game was a short, linear, automated, boring, shitty, glitchy mess that has a terrible story, shoehorned villains and false advertising. And other than a kart racer that got abandoned on the sidewalk the day after it released, we have had nothing game wise since. Now here we are

Though I get your confusion because even though it’s implied the characters see classic and modern sonic physically the same, there are also instances where they point out the differences in shape and size for jokes and whatnot. And sonic not being able to talk is just a weird choice made in generations when classic sonic was never really mute. He only didn’t speak because of hardware limitations but he was talking as soon as the sega CD rolled around.

This is one of the few vids that says exactly/almost 1:1 on how I feel about both Colors & Forces. Colors was an alright game, but that was definitely the game that even had a younger me say; "Sonic?". Colors was the game that really made this newer corny Sonic. I can rant further but man.
And Sonic Forces? Adventure fans wanted something dark or atleast similar in tone like the first 2 adventure games.. Then we get Forces as "our game". You'd have people really argue that "Hey, Forces is like Adventure series; I don't get what the problem is". If you know, you know. Forces was literally the childs play adventure. It's like they're scared to hit 13+ tone, and have no choice but to make the series truthfully rated E.
I don't even know when was the last time I heard a character say "Damn". Like is that even too harsh nowadays lol ?
I also extremely hate when people try to intrude saying "Sonic doesn't need such a story" . It's literally the most casual perspective argument of all time. People who say that are typically hard on Classic fans + people who literally don't indulge in Sonic stuff as much as the fans literally yelling for story.. Man I can rant on further but truthfully... We really need that Adventures feel again... It doesn't have to be in gameplay persay, but atleast in tone.

Sonic says "Damn" in Forces as part of his Engrish, just switch the language to Japanese which was part of the reason the game got E-10+ alongside the war stuff. The Adventure Games would both be E-10+ if they released today thanks to the dirty lyrics in Amy's Theme alone not to mention more modern views of the story aspects in both games. Hard to believe Shadow's Game got away with being E-10+ as well & I'm sure it would get bumped up to Teen if they ever ported it to modern hardware. Still I have to agree with you that Story is the most important thing for Sonic these days.

Considering how many Sonic videos have come out with people citing how it should be fixed, how bad it is or just their personal experience with it, this was a nice change of pace and a nice surprise from your channel. I can relate to growing up with the series and coming to realise many don't share the same high opinion of the games you grew up with. I can also relate to the series having a major impact on what I ended up choosing as a career, since Sonic introduced me to game design and was a significant inspiration when I chose to specialise in animation.
As the series has gone on I've played what I can get my hands on, gone to events, had interesting discourse with fans and non-fans in addition to plenty more amazing experiences. It's not a perfect series, there's much that could be improved and plenty that could have been avoided but I wouldn't change anything about the way it's gone so far. As tomorrow approaches and we hopefully learn of the future of this franchise for the remainder of the decade, I can only hope it manifests into something that embodies Sonic's spirit in gameplay, storytelling and characterization as well as bringing together fans old and new that can definitively say 'That's Sonic'. Here's hoping SEGA and Sonic Team share that same passion for Sonic that we do somewhere deep down.
Thanks for an awesome video Mikey and all the best with your future projects.

I really do think that people tend to overthink Sonic. The series never made fun of itself. It only poked fun of it's own overused tropes, which is funny to some people, things like Eggman being such a joke at this point, that he will just lose again and again. This is something Sonic would do. There isn't anything wrong with Sonic, a cartoon-like character, taking more inspiration from cartoons, and coming off as goofier. This is why Sonic Colors works so well. The story isn't anything special, but it feels like something experienced in a cartoon for Sonic. Prior to this, it felt like Sonic didn't know what it wanted to be. It never felt like a cartoon, and Sonic was wrongfully characterized as this extreme risk taker and nothing else. He barely had a short temper or an ego. Sonic's supposed to be a cool, edgy, sarcastic, witty, and egotistical hedgehog with fast speed and a short temper, who is the worst to his enemies, and the best to his friends. He was filled with attitude. The DIC cartoons and Archie comics portrayed his character with justice, and the current era of Sonic also mirrors that very same attitude, especially in Forces, which has a dark tone. His brightness in the darkness mirrors Sonic SATAM in ways.
As for gameplay, it found it's footing, but it wasn't going to last for long simply because they have too much to cater to. During Unleashed - Generations, some people cried about not being able to properly control Sonic's speed, and wanting more than just "boost to win." Sonic Team tried to remedy this by giving you more pathways and platforming to jump over in Generations, but people still cried, so BAM! New experimental game where you have full control of Sonic's speed....and hardly anyone enjoyed it for being too different, and to some people, too experimental, forcing them to backtrack to Generation's style with next to no inspiration outside of the custom character and the theme of the game, which ended up being Sonic Forces. Fans had begged for a Generations sequel, and when they got it, the game was half baked, the true fault being the fans, not Sonic Team, who just couldn't figure out what to do, and were afraid of doing what they wanted to do because it might possibly alienate fans...and now they're taking that chance with Sonic Frontiers, but still, a part of them is STILL listening to fans. As long as they let fans hold them back, Sonic's true potential will never be realized, because the biggest issue isn't Sonic...
It's the fans. They take failure too seriously, as if it isn't something to learn from. They're negative, not positive, and that hurts. Also, just throwing this out there. Mania Sonic is not THAT same Classic Sonic from Generations. Mania Sonic is the one in Forces, so he is from the mania dimension, dragged there by the phantom ruby's power, while the one from Generations is just Classic Sonic from the main timeline.

Man I feel you in what you’ve been saying, personally, to summarize what I think, I think as you said, it’s because of the genuine care that they used to put into sonics character that they don’t anymore is what really alienates sonic fans to this day. I’ve always hated how sega just changed sonic over and over throughout the years, the reason for that most likely being due to the directions they took so much in the series, it’d also explain why the voices of characters changed left and right. Even between the dark era and adventure era they still kept Sonic’s persona pretty much consistent, it’s the meta era sonic I dislike the most, the douchey corny sonic of now has always been unappealing to me personally, and I don’t even have anything against roger, I think he’s actually a great voice actor with the stuff he’s done. So combined with sonics several identity crisis’, I think what made the spilt in the sonic series even worse was establishing classic and modern sonic as separate character’s, again as you said in the video, it makes no sense how he’d go from being mute to a chatter box later on, that and the difference in design with how stubby classic is and how slender modern is in comparison. To be honest, i think classic sonic would genuinely be waaay more enjoyable if they had given him a voice and an equally cocky attitude to match, it would’ve helped to really establish the fact that they’re the same person. I’ve personally thought for a while now if they decided to make the series story oriented, it’d really help reestablish sonics character as a whole, I mean we’ve seen how enjoyable story oriented sonic can be with characters like shadow, i mean it’s the entire reason why he’s the second most popular character in the series because of his genuinely good backstory, that and a sick design, still, I seriously doubt that they would even dare to try going down a story oriented path with the series again, probably because of the disaster of 06 that happened. But still that’s just my outlook on the series, I’ve only been a fan for like just about 10 years now so I’m not exactly one of the more veteran fans in comparison to fans from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Give me 1 fun gameplay and level design for 1 game and it'll be easier to make another game based on that gameplay. Then focus on story. Sega has no confidence that sonic should need that much work. Tbh most people will still buy it smh

I disagree if you try that & fail you end up with both bad gameplay & bad story & you saw that with both Colors & Lost World. At least we were getting good stories during the 2000s even if the gameplay was inconsistent & I know Wii Remotes & rushed games were part of the problem. The situation of gameplay & level design is more complicated than you think as the Adventure Games essentially got everything right better than later games. PS2 had compatibility problems with the Adventure Games which many believe led to Heroes & Shadow being so different in addition to the weird whims at the time.
There's good reason why the average fan would rather play Black Knight than Lost World & that is because the awesome story makes you more forgiving of having to learn an unusual moveset & there is actual payoff once you learn the way of the Wii Remote Sword. Now of course there is no way Black Knight gameplay could ever fit for more games in the series, although this type of mastery & reward system was seen in plenty of the great games of the series. Take SA2 Treasure Hunting for 1 of the best examples to where it just keeps getting better with more experience as you learn the inner workings of the stages & it all feedbacks even further when you factor in Chao World.

I was a PS2 kid who got to experience a nice mixture of classic and modern sonic.
    Mega Collection
    Heroes
    Shadow
    Riders
    So on and so forth.

How Classic Sonic grew into Modern Sonic can actually be explained with one thing...
    Chaos energy.
In the Sonic universe, chaos energy can pretty much be lots of things, something that even turn thoughts into reality.
Being exposed to chaos energy so much it's probably what caused Sonic and company to gain some extra height, color and eye change, etc.
The only thing that's hard to explain really it's Classic Sonic's silence (aside from the actual reason being limited tech, and the fact that Sega couldn't get Jaleel White to voice him in Generations.)

Great video, Mikey. Just curious on what others think about Classic and Modern being from different dimensions thing. I heard the Japanese dub and intention was that they ARE the same people. Generations split that Classic Sonic's timeline where he went on to Mania and the OG/Modern Sonic went to whatever game was next. So it was a split timeline thing. But Tails does say dimension. I still take it as the timeline split but what do you all think?

29:10 no, it's not edgy. Edgy is try-hard. Sonic had mature stories with mature themes. Big difference. Shadow the Hedgehog the game is edgy/try-hard

I kinda remember playing Sonic 1 once in my childhood. About a few months later, I played Sonic Generations for PS3. Also the original Sonic games on the Genesis Collection for PS3. I also played Sonic Lost World for 3DS. And Sonic Mania, Forces, and Origins. Which is just the original Sonic games on Switch. Planning on playing Frontiers in the future when it comes out. Sonic 06 really sucked, though. Didn't really play it, I just went with the crowd of how bad it was. You know? The movies were good. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was good, too. Not the other three shows. Watched Sonic X on Saturday mornings, but didn't really like it much.

I never really liked Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, I just found it to be annoying and a mediocre adaption of Sonic. But I did start to like Sonic X near the 3rd and final season, season 1 and 2 were just bad adaptions of Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Battle. But season 3 was great and was a nice conclusion to the series.

This was such a good video and I'm glad I'm not alone on this topic either of how Sonic went to a self aware laughing stock through the 2010s.
I got into this series around 2006 the time Sonic was a laughing stock but the first few games I played were Sonic advance, Mega Collection and Adventure 2. I was around 5 years old at the time so I didn't know what was going on during that time but it made me want to check and see what I was missing out on while keeping up with the games like Sonic Riders and Sonic Unleashed to name the few.
I wasn't even aware that Sonic 06 or Black knight were even considered bad games and I think most of those critic reviews and late 2000 animations had finally made me realize what the big picture was but it didn't stop me from hating these games because I still had fun with them
I was 9 years old when Sonic Colors came out and I also noticed the shift in tone and the writing and at first I kinda shrugged it because it felt harmless at best but Sonic Colors to me felt like a big downgrade compared to Unleashed and like you said the game was really short, Generations came out and I really love it, Lost World is a game I love and hate but at the same time it felt like the games were getting more lifeless and I didn't even bother playing any the Sonic boom games so it was a 4 year wait for me and with Sonic Forces it felt like everything was going back to that whole adventure formula story but it still had most of the same problems I had with colors and lost world and it felt like false advertising for me. And now we're here and I'm worried but excited about Frontiers I just hope it turns out well

Thank you for sharing your experience.
Your path along Sonic is very similar to mine; Started with Sonic 2 and followed along a Nintendo-centric route as a kid but still able to shape my life. My love for Sonic allowed me to be the hobbyist artist I am still today, Sonic X sealed my resolve to learn the Japanese language, etc. Sonic Generations started to seriously crack my adoration and Colors onward critically affected it, effectively making me see and treat the franchise in a different way.
I still like Sonic, but I'm not sure it's as a fan. Nowadays I look at the series as an interesting case of franchise (mis)management, or more precisely missed opportunities that hopefully will rebound back into something I used to love about it.

Abandoning 1 of Japan's favorite characters in the series who had plenty of appeal to kids (Cream) in favor of the almost universally despised Zeti was an excellent example of mismanagement. My case is basically the same as yours except I was never any good at drawing Sonic Characters.

Okay, I'll try not to pour my entire life story here on Sonic, but I have a lot to unpack with this video. I am an EX Sonic fan and I am an EX video gamer. All of that has to do with the first words spoken in the video: "Sonic is a video game series..." I was introduced to Sonic from it's original game back on the Sega Genesis through my cousins. My interest convinced my parents to get me a Sega Genesis with Sonic 1 and 2 for Christmas. I was hooked. For Easter I got issue #11 of the Archie Sonic Comic (also the first Ken Penders issue). I watched the Satam series. To Me Sonic wasn't just a video game; it was a phenomenon. I got Sonic 3 for good grades at the now defunct Radio Warehouse and Sonic and Knuckles later for Christmas. Having games to play; comics to read (or skim 'cause I had a unique reading curve growing up. maybe un diagnosed adhd?) And cartoon shows to watch was what made the franchise unique despite their differences. I wondered if their was more: A Sonic Movie? Knuckles in the cartoon shows? Knuckles' own cartoon like in the comics? Well none of that shit happened. I lost the cartoons so the comics had to pull double duty. and then I lost the video games. I wouldn't say we were poor, but there wasn't enough interest or even a new Sonic game to warrant a Sega Saturn purchase and I never got a 32x for Knuckles Chaotix (I did see Sonic CD again cause of my cousins but same reason I never got a sega cd). Now SOnic was JUST A COMIC BOOK for me. I stayed as patent as I could for something else Sonic related. Then I found the OVA! A SONIC MOVIE? Wait, what is this anime crap? Metal SOnic from SOnic CD? How Old is this Movie?? FINE! Fine, I'm DESPERATE I'll watch this pure white VHS tape. The turn for me for the franchise was right there. The japanese were playing hardball and I would soon learn the ethnic cleansing planned along the horizon of the land of the rising sun (does anybody else remember that controversial Tails T-shirt on the Sega Shop?). Then came the dreamcast. I wanted one, but I hadn't had a game console since getting and N64 late for Conker's Bad fur day and the Mario Party Games and my parents insisted I go with something I'd get more gameplay out of. This was a problem as Only Sonic Adventure; Sonic Adventure2 and Sonic Shuffle I cared about (DO you even think Sonic fans even play actual sports?) Not to mention Playstation 2 was killing them. I would get my answer from Sega themselves: "No more Dreamcast - Software only". I would pick the NIntendo gamecube for Luigi's Mansion (Haunted Mansion fan) I would luck out with Dreamcast Sonic games: SADX; SA2B; Mega Collection; Gems Collection, etc. Strike TWO would be SOnic 06, but NOT because of gameplay. It would be the story. Again, Japan would stronghold their cultural stance on the franchise and push me away from the games. I kept getting the comics but stopped reading them assuming they would end at some point and I could reminisce later. Then Ian Flynn showed up and gave it a fresh coat of paint and once again Only the comics mattered. The Ken Penders thing happens; Big fiasco. Japan pulls plug on Archie Comics. I had NOTHING! IDW announced. Think this is a godsend as TMNT uses almost everything both cannon and non-cannon. Nope. I end up signing up for Sonic Forces Comics! Put up with it for a while to respect the writers hoping they would expand the universe later and to keep my local comic shop open. Learn about Johnathon Grey; Learn about SOnamy fans; Local comic shop shudders due to pandemic. Tell the comic to fuck themselves before issue 50...I don't CARE whether or not Frontier is good or bad because I KNOW it will be sterile. I'm Mad at the Segazuka for thinking it only knows best for the franchise and its cannon while making fan favorite characters one dimensional and creating farces like "NO CURRENCY". I am mad at the sheeple for being Einstein's stark definition of Insanity every five years protecting Segakuza's hypocrisy's while taking a punch a Ken Penders every now and then as if was every truly the worst thing that ever happened to the franchise! Taking Sonic too seriously or not the FANS have taken themselves FAR TOO seriously to the extent that the Segakuza acknowledged "Original the character do not steal" as a major part of Sonic Forces all the while chanting "PRINCESS SALLY ISN'T CANNON". I wasn't a Sonic fan in the beginning (I'm a little older than that). I grew up with Turtlemania and TMNT! Do Turtle fans start their videos "TMNT is a comic book series" ???? NO! TMNT is Television; Comic Books; Movies; and VIDEO GAMES! They made a game just recently! I bought it. I haven't played it. I'm convinced it's because of Sonic. Sonic has two movies! Two Awesomely SAFE movies. Just the "cannon stuff" but just different enough to warrant itself not just a stark retelling of the video games. But I can't help it..... I want viacom to right Ken Penders a check and tell him " We'll write the script thank you". I'd settle for Sonic Tails and Knuckles watching a VHS tape of an 80s anime called "Princess sally and the freedom fighters" with sally quoting the box of the Japanese Sonic quote on Sonic 1. I DON'T WANT SONIC TO BE A VIDEO GAME ANYMORE!

I agree with the majority of your comments made In the video, however there was one that stuck out to me that I strongly disagree on.
At 32:40 you mentioned how the recent titles feel "soulless", yet that's just untrue. You don't come into this industry to fail, you come into it to do the best you can.
When a project fails, it doesn't take away the amount of effort put into it. From the concept art, modeling, coding, voice work etc, everyone in that creative process are there because they want to make the best thing they can make.
Sonic Forces, for all its unfortunate flaws, wounded up being the way it was because of its short life in development. Was it bad it ended up being developed in 1.5 Years? Absolutely, but especially in recent years, that is impressive that they managed to get all that work done in that short amount of time with deadlines and budget being worried about.
No game is soulless, put the feelings aside and just look at the work that goes into it. Every game has ambition, ambition doesn't make a game good, it makes it promising, and every Sonic game has had ambition depending on how big the project is.
I just want people to drop this idea that the 2010's were soulless, when in reality, those people who make the product care as much as you or me, its easy for us to say what is best for the franchise, but for them, getting the hands dirty, is alot harder.
SEGA should be handling the franchise better, and even as a die hard SEGA fan, I'll wholeheartedly admit that, but I don't want the work of the individuals to be thrown by the side.
That's why Frontiers is exciting because of how new and different it is, but also because of the obvious amount of care in the game, regardless of early builds and etc.
Again, good video, but that part did stick out to me and it didn't sit right.

As a person who grew up in the meta area, my first sonic was aosth on the kidlet roku chanel and my first game was secret rings. I never liked secret rings, thought it was too hard but the 90s sonic caught me. I watched all the sonic paradox animations religiously and although I didn't buy comic books as u didn't understand them, I read a couple of Archie comics and loved them. For the longest time the only words i could spell were sonic lets play.Colors was the first main game I played and I like it a good amount. I would replay it to see if I could beet it in a day and I did multiple times. I watched sonic generations mod showcases envyus of pc and ps3 owners while begging to my self that it would be brought to wii. By the time I got my wii u I was very online and I was paying attention to sonic news and rumors for lost world and boom and was disappointed when those games were bad. When I got a good pc I played adventure q and 2 and loved them. My frends and i make it an acasion to see the sonic movies. I realy want the franchise to be good, and I hope it regains its luster and respect in the future.

Tbh i always thought classic became modern but then became two different entities by messing with the timeline, turning it into a different dimension. Modern Sonic never went through the events of Mania, but for some reason the events of Generations changed his past and now we have two Sonic's. The Sonic (og/modern) that we know in the all the main games except Mania, and the Sonic ("classic") that was in generations and later on Mania. So classic Sonic was originally on his correct path of events, for example adventure, adventures 2, heros, colours, etc. but since the time eater screwed with the timeline it created a second Sonic that has been through the events the classic games, but now has a new future. At this point the only thing we about classic Sonic's future after generations is mania, mania plus, maybe mania adventures, forces and that's it. We don't know if he is still going to go through the event of the other main games like Sonic Adventure because of how much the timeline changed, but maybe sega should experiment with the concept of a classic Sonic growing into modern Sonic with a new timeline. It would probably give them an excuse to go back to the adventure style gameplay. I mean that's bassicly what mania is, going back to an older gameplay stlye with a new story.

    • @NoobTube9008

But that's just a theory I could be wrong. But still it would be cool if sega took the opportunity to recreate Sonic's origin/story.

I thought that was the obvious answer, most people would rather not try to piece together temporal logic for themselves & then say it was a retcon or something. Sucks not much is done with Mania timeline.
