I first got into the Archie Comics around when sonic generations was coming out and reading the genesis arc was very entertaining and confusing at the same time. God... This era of Sonic was one that nearly passed me by. Given that I missed out on the Saturn entirely, I didn't even get my Dreamcast and Adventure/Shuffle until well into 2004 or 2005, from essentially a pawn shop. Long after the console was effectively discontinued. T'was also a pretty isolated time in my life, so I don't really have many tales to tell of it, other than lingering thoughts of..."not-allowed-on-youtube" that Adventure actually helped distract me from.
I suppose what sums it all up the best is the fact that I thought the Team Blast Glitch was a *positive* aspect of Heroes. That, and noticing the drastic physics differences in SA2 and SA2B that still bother me to this day.

This is one of those wild, self-reflection, memory lane types of videos. I mean that in a good way, of course. I grew up with similar Sonic experiences in the late '90s and early '00s, including it taking a backseat to Pokemon for a while. Seeing Billy Hatcher and that Mario Kart demo disk brings back fond memories of my little bro, who bugged our dad to get him those so we could play them together. Thanks for the memories and the video, dude.

Frontiers has undoubtedly regained the atmosphere of this era
I think that the meaning of separating classic and modern has finally been demonstrated.
He's no longer the annoying machine gun talker he once hated, and he's regained all of his coolness as Sonic the Hedgehog.

I'm just glad they're bringing back the openness of levels again. As much as I like unleashed and generations, the games after felt more like an automatic line you can only go straight on.

@@MalevolentStudios The Adventure series was actually more linear than the boost games. People just seem to only remember them for their longer stretched sections.

@@windy3935 They probably mean that you can approach levels in your own way to an extent. Aswell as Sonic's unchained controls. The boost games feel alot more linear by comparison.

    • @windy3935
      @windy3935 2 роки тому +1

@@TheunknownuserM07 Boost games tend to have more branching paths and actual varying layers similar to the classic games, while Advs kept you on one narrow path mainly and with no consistent varying layers. (Even Heroes Seaside Hill was on a completely different level from Advs.) Adventure just mainly has more 3D space control. Werehog gameplay is also onpar with Advs, with more varied gameplay (combat, puzzles, platforming, more than triple the moves Adv had, etc). Like, compare Speed Highway Adv to Gen's.
One 3D series that actually exceeds Advs linearity is the storybook games.
Even Forces had its moment's in terms of pure level layout. Not length

    • @TheunknownuserM07
      @TheunknownuserM07 2 роки тому +3

@@windy3935 I'm not talking about branching paths. I'm talking about how you approach levels in your own way. Or complete it in your own way.
Boost has more options (branching paths). But adventure is a playground when it comes to level design. Just watch any of zoom mike's videos on Sonic, and you can see how many approaches you can take with the adventure games and it's level design. Point is. Adventure may have the more linear game design, but due to Sonic's moveset and unchained controls, that linear path can be approached in numerous of ways.
Also. Sure the boost games has branching paths similar to the classics. What it doesn't have is it's philosophy of momentum. Which the adventure games translates successfully. Hell, I think its even better in 3d, because you can see right in front of you beforehand, and it doesn't have the "Surprise motherfucker" syndrome, that the classic games have.
Also, your forgetting the fact that, boost games tend to have alot more 2d sections. Which makes it much more easier to integrate the "Branching paths" design. Adventure never had that "luxury".
Also. Why compare the adventure games to the werehog? Those are entirely different. The werehog focuses more on, slow puzzles, combat, and methodical platforming. Adventure focuses more on momentum, and how you as a player can utilize that momentum. You simply cannot compare the adventure movements, to the werehog movements, because both are utilized completely different.
Forces had shallow level design, I dunno how some moments of it overshadow adventure's level design.
Simply put. Adventure does things that boost can't. Boost does things that adventure can't. Adventure has the philosophy. Boost has the level design. Both translated elements of the 2d formula spectacularly, despite the two being so different. Both took the elements of what it had adapted from the classic formula, and brought it into uncharted territory. Both gameplay styles are valid. And I think, as fans, we should appreciate the two different styles for what it offers, and it's strengths.

great video. hearing that you made a friend who had a huge interest in Sonic after being bullied about liking the series, and hearing that you guys are still friends to this day is incredibly heartwarming. I was born at the tail end of the Adventure era, 2004. but despite that, a few years later I did get to play some of the catalog from that era. my first Sonic game was Heroes and I LOVED IT. Ocean Palace never fails to make me incredibly nostalgic. Ryan was the voice I knew for Sonic, so it was a bit odd but cool jumping over to games like Unleashed (that just came out at the time) and hearing a new voice. I basically went from Heroes, to Unleashed, to 06, and the classics. but during that time I did get to play SA1 and I loved that game too. it wasn't until a bit after that I played SA2 after seeing it downloaded on my friend's PlayStation. I grew up in the Dark Age era mostly but it was cool to experience even just a sliver of the Adventure era.

This era was wild, my cousins, my friends on the street and my friends on school, we all loved Sonic, We all talked about how epic the stories were, how Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow were so cool and we kept on rocking with the OSTs, bringing memory cards to fight each other's Chao or just some good old races or shooting duel
The Adventure and Advance games alongside the collections will always remain as my fondest memories with Sonic, there was a time where you wouldn't think twice if somebody said that this guy was the 2nd pillar of gaming rivaling Mario

I was huge into Sonic during the Genesis era, even had a game gear too. But on a particular Easter I got an N64 and didn't touch another Sonic game until like 2011/2012 when I caught up with the series. So I missed out on this era unfortunately.
Was expecting from this video a retrospective on the Dreamcast era's impact on the game series as a whole but ended up getting a life retrospective instead. Was really cool to hear your experiences, hope you make more on the other eras.

I was introduced to Sonic through the GameCube era. Adventure DX, Mega Collection, Adventure 2 Battle, and Heroes. Such great times! Luckily I had a close friend who also liked Sonic and he was able to introduce me to the original Sonic Movie, Sonic X, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and more. Finding merchandise was incredibly hard to do around that time, especially here in Canada. But it made it all the more rewarding when I came across the Toy Island Sonic X figures.
I loved film making as well so in the early days of UA-cam I made a lot of videos under the names sonicfanguy and toxicnightmarex. It was great to be a part of the Sonic community on UA-cam back then and I’m proud to still be a part of it in a small way.

Fast forward to modern times, i own a Steam copy of the game and raised my Chao to become cute and powerful!~

I didn't get my first console, the Gamecube, until 2006 at age 7, so I was too young to experience that. I got SA2B and Heroes in a pack together and those became instant favorites. My sister brought Sonic Mega Collection from a Book Fair one day. Being a Sonic fan during the Gamecube days was perfect because you had everything that released up to that point. I watched Sonic X religiously too. Even though it doesn't hold up too well, I can never bring myself to hate it.

i wasn't even thought of during the adventure era, but since my family wasn't really the richest we usually had a bunch of older generation consoles as hand me downs, and mine was a gamecube with sonic mega collection and sonic riders. i remember having so much fun playing the classic games while also going through the gallery to look through the artwork. i took one look at the adventure design and knew it was the coolest thing i ever had seen. despite him not looking the same as in game or on the manuals, i still got the sense it was sonic.

  • @JLuisJoni

These retrospective videos are so nice.
For my experience, I actually discovered the series when it'd be considered the end of the Adventure Era. The first Sonic game I ever played was Sonic Heroes on my younger cousin's PlayStation 2. Think I was about 5 or 6 then. Fell in love with the character designs(they made me think of the Looney Tunes, which I loved, just cooler), the visual style, the music, and since then, I was hooked. Any time my dad let me use his laptop, all I looked up was Sonic. That's how I discovered so many flash games(Ultimate Flash Sonic being the stand out), flash animations(VGDC's Mario VS Sonic was one of the earliest I saw), and a bunch more. Was how I discovered stuff like Newgrounds and all those DBZ inspired sprite animations, even without knowing what a DBZ was back then. Shadow the Hedgehog did end up flying under my radar, but not the collections! I got Sonic Gems Collection sometime around 2006, I think? And another one of my cousins eventually got Mega Collection Plus on his PS2. So I was set for Classic Sonic action, and I played Gems Collection *religiously*. Even skipped homework to play it, aaaaand I was eventually scolded for it. Beyond that, most of my experience is with the Dark Age, but I did pester so many in my family to get me Sonic Adventure DX on PC because it was a Sonic Game on PC AND because of the mods I was seeing. That stuff is common place now, but back then, it was magic to me. And you wouldn't believe the amount of emulators, ROM hacks and Fan Games I had on the same laptop my dad used that he eventually gifted to me when he upgraded to a new one. I had it all, Megamix, Retro Sonic, Sonic 2 Megamix, official Sonic games like all of the GBA games(minus Pinball Party), it was crazy.
So many fond memories of those times.

I literally was born when Adventure 1 came out in the US, so the Sonic I grew up with was always the "green-eyes" Modern Sonic. It was only until I played Mega Collection that I learned about how he originally looked like. However, the 2000s era will always have a special place in my heart, despite all the crap that came out during that time.

Funny that you mentioned White Jungle always reminds you of McDonald’s, as a kid I had a PS2 and I didn’t own a copy of Sonic Heroes even though I loved that game. I only ever played it on a GameCube setup they had at my local McDonald’s! So to this day both the GameCube controller and Sonic Heroes are linked in my mind to that damn restaurant.
Also thought I’d add that even though I was born in 2001, I grew up with the classic games first thanks to Mega Collection Plus! I will always be extremely thankful to have experienced this series when I did and how I did.

Oh man this was so cool, watching it unlocked so many memories I forgot about.
I grew up watching Sonic X on 4Kids when it was on the CW, and while I did play a bit of the games, like I specifically remember the aircraft carrier deck race in SA2B and playing the Sonoc 06 demo at Target, I didn't actually PLAY any of them until Dimps' Unleashed, which my parents got our family with our Wii, my first console. I enjoyed Apotos but couldn't really get past the first boss because dumb kid brain.
Then I played Sonic Colors and was forever lost to my love for this autistic blue rat. Your story about Justin reminded me how I met my own best friend for my middle school years, Brandon. I loved Colors so much I would bring the manual to school and incessantly ask all the kids in my class if they played it, and this Brandon kid I hardly knew said his cousin had the DS version and he played it, and for the next like 3 years we were best buds. I remember I learned about Shadow the Hedgehog and I was so bewildered telling him about it, and even more shocked learning he had bought it between the time I told him about the game earlier that week, and that weekend when I went over to spend the night. And we played the SHIT out of Shadow and Secret Rings, I actually still have an affinity for StH as an adult and am very slowly working to fill out the library with all 326 playthroughs. And since I grew up with the Dark Era's tone, look, and stories, and really got into the series with the Meta Era for the gameplay and music, I am absolutely hyped as fuck for Frontiers. Even if it turns out not great, I know I'll still love it, like how I love Shadow and how I've even warmed up to Forces considerably.
It's so cool hearing other people's Sonic stories, I have such an encyclopedic knowledge of the series that it's cool hearing about new experiences relating to it. I'd love to see you do videos on the Dark and Meta Eras, I know you couldn't really do one for the Classic Era since you were, by self-declaration, a pants shitting toddler.

As a person who is going through your early 00's experience of Sonic right now. I find it awesome looking at all the similarities and differences. I think people barely talk about Sonic anymore because he lost his console front which is why Playstation and Xbox are so synonymous with people my age these days. I would have loved to be in the adventure era but alas.... I was born at the tail end of the Dark Era so my very first introduction to Sonic if I can recall was some youtube video showing off Sonic and Shadow doing the 2P battle in SA2 and I was hooked. I vaguely remember Mania and Forces' pre release era. I though I wanted the "cool 3d game" because I thought mania was for babies ( which I wasn't far off from at the time). Frontiers is the first time I've really witnessed Pre release hype and discussion for a Sonic game and it feels great! Superstars had me groaning that it was a 2D class8c game and not a Modern one like Zippo's leaks suggested. It would've been really cool also because it would've been the first 2D modern game to release in my life (no Colors doesn't count I hate that shit). Anyways leaks suggesting that a sonic and Shadow game gonna release holiday 2024. I theorise here and now it's an SA2 Remake to synergise with Sonic 3 because that's just SA2 the movie.

for me the dark age was the adventure era in a sense because during that time i couldn't afford a wii or xbox 360 so i was going back and playing all the sonic games that came out in the early 2000s as well as shadow and sonic riders so it all kinda bleeds together for me. that being said, the actual adventure era was in my opinion the best time for sonic. not because of how popular it was, because the popularity was fading by that point, but because of the quality and quantity of the games. think about it, not only was there the adventure ports, the advance games, and sonic heroes, but there was also the mega and gems collections. if you had a gamecube, like me, you had the best of sonic. i'm hoping the sonic frontiers will bring sonic back to where he was in the early 2000s, a high quality triple a franchise. it wont happen all at once, but open world is in my opinion what sonic should have been doing for years, so my hopes are starting to rise.

Dreamcast era and first experiencing Sonic Adventure are 2 of my favourite childhood memories! Honestly this game changed everything for me. Epic, serious story, music, voice acting, gameplay, graphics unreal. Sonic adventure bonded me and my close friends together at my house cos before that we always spent time at his house as he had the bigger game collection or the console I didn't. UNTIL I got a DC! 🔥👌 This game blew my little 8 year old mind. The music is iconic and helped me get into rock music at a young age.

My history with the Dreamcast/Adventure Era:
This era is how I was introduced to Sonic. I was born September 12, 2002, so today is actually my birthday, but since I was born in 2002, I didn't get into it until it was over but how I got introduced to it is through my older sister. She wanted to get into gaming back in 2001 after the Dreamcast was already discontinued, so dad brought her to Toys R Us and out of all of the consoles, Dreamcast was the one that caught their attention the most, especially because of how cheap it was due to it being discontinued. All of this cool stuff for a great deal was an opportunity that my dad did not want to miss so he bought the console then and there alongside Echo The Dolphin and Sonic Adventure 1. Sometime later on my sister would've eventually gotten Sonic Adventure 2, as well as some other games on Dreamcast. In 2003 our cousin bought a PS2 for my sister, and a bunch of games for it too, seriously this guy went all out for my sister, he probably spent 400 to 500 USD on all of that stuff, the PS2 was 200 bucks at the time so he basically would've spent double the money on games so now that she also had a PS2, when Sonic Heroes came out later on that year she bought it for PS2.
Then, enter the year 2006, before Sonic 06 came out mind you, this is where I came into the story. I noticed my sister was playing the Sonic games a lot, I was watching her play them, and I wanted to get into it, so SA 1 & 2 were the first games I ever played in my life, either that or the Dreamcast port of Spider-Man. I can't remember for sure, but I probably played SA 1 & 2 first and then played Spider-Man second.
So of course with SA1 being my first ever gaming experience, there was really nothing like this to me back then. I had a great time playing through SA1, so then I moved on to SA2, and even though I liked SA1, SA2 was the game that really showed me what video games can be, and shaped me into the gamer that I am today. SA2 is the superior game imo, it improved upon everything. The reason I specified this being before Sonic 06 came out, is that after I played SA 1 & 2, E3 2006 happened, so I remember my sister showing me the E3 trailer for Sonic 06 on the old Sonic 06 website. The one that had the instrumental version of His World in it. Fun fact btw, that Sonic 06 website is still online and has never been shut down. I was so impressed and was excited about the game. So sometime later in 2006 I would've started watching Sonic X for the first time, and was loving it.
Then go to early to mid 2007, and this would've been when I started playing Sonic Heroes for the first time. I thought all of the characters having their own teams was really cool and the game was on par with the other games. 2007 also would've been when I started doing the multiplayer in SA2 and Heroes with my brother, and the end of the year is when the final season of Sonic X aired so my entire family watched the new episodes as they released. Other than Season 5 of Spongebob this was the first time I got really hyped about new episodes of a TV show.
And Shadow The Hedgehog kinda counts as the Adventure/Dreamcast Era, so I played that in the summer of 2008, and for Christmas in 2008, my mom bought some of the Sonic X toys for me. I got Sonic, Tails, and Shadow.
And that's where it ends for me, although my time with Sonic was far from over. It was the end of one era and the start of the next. So for me the Adventure Era was from early 2006 - the end of 2008, that's basically 3 years worth of my first exposures to Sonic.
The Adventure Era is still my favorite to this day since it's where both gameplay and story really shined, therefore giving us the best of both worlds and it felt like the only Era of Sonic where they actually cared about continuity since they were still referencing the events of SA 1 & 2 in Heroes and Shadow.

This was Sonic's silver age. He returned after years of being in the background with more spectacle than before, and also some of the better examples of early 3D game design. 'Sonic Adventure 1' is a good game, albeit one that aims to be ambitious to a fault, and 'Sonic Adventure 2' improved and streamlined everything to make for one of the high points of Sonic's gaming career. Sonic 3 still stands as the strongest entry, but the jump to 3D is remarkable nonetheless.

Sonic has been a part of my life on and off, I'm actually mostly just familiar with the classic era and adventure era. I knew of the first game at first due to that being the only sonic game and splatterhouse. I do know I maybe had Sonic 2 as well? I'm not sure though. I watched the cartoons a little. My major sonic phase was when I was 8, befriended a boy who loved Sonic and had the adventure games, but we mostly played the first one until I moved.
but for the next couple of years, which are hazy, but I got Sonic Heroes and the mega collection AND the sega collection, so I learned a lot about the classic sonic games, found out about the Archie comics and started collecting those, got more sonic games like Shadow the Hedgehog, which I loved that game so much as a kid, the first level couldn't load properly and thus, Shadow would fall to his death.
Sonic was a solid 2nd place for me, since I was a playstation kid I missed out on a lot of the later console stuff starting in the ps3 cuz I was broke and dad didn't like a teenage me at that point to be into anything "kid" as I was considered too old for it. Now, the most I've been engaged with Sonic is through romhacks, catching up on the defunct Archie comics, playing Sonic Mania.

Watching this video reminds me how I got into Sonic. As I write this comment, it's September 10, 2022, just one day before my 20th birthday. I like to share my history of Sonic for a moment.
2007-2008: My memory is blurry around this time as I was only 5-6 years old, the first Sonic game I remember playing was Sonic 06 on my fathers PS3. Never got to Wave Ocean , so that story ends here.
2009-2010: Around this time, I was living in a homeless shelter and facing mental health issues and bulling, but this time period is when I really became a Sonic fan. The Rush duology, Sega all stars racing, the Olympic games, Sonic X all brought me into this Sonic world, all culminating with Sonic Colors release. The first game I ever beaten, (Excluding Mario Kart Wii.) But the next year was about to change my life.
2011-2012: I became a fan at the right time. As 2011 came in and I moved into a house with my mother and sister, I discovered UA-cam, and Sonic content was there in spades. Let's plays, history videos, stop motions, plush/toy videos, AMV'S, even MugiMikey animations from around that time, like Modern meets classic Sonic. I leaned so much about Sonic's past and it really got me into retro gaming and discovered many more titles. SADX and Gems/classic collection. In retrospect, some of my most fond memories are from this era... and I never want to forget it.
2013-2019: Interest began to wane as I entered Middle and later High school. Began turning my interest to other series like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, ect. I was keeping tabs open on Sonic, but never went out my way to play the newer games, except Mania in early 2018.
2020-2022: March 26, 2020 reignited something within me. That day, I booted up Sonic mania on my Nintendo switch... and something clicked. For the next month, I did multiple more runs of the game. I replayed SADX and loved that game more than I ever had. That summer, my dad handed me his old gaming laptop and I made a steam account. SADX was the first game I purchased on there. After beating it, I got mods for SADX and it felt magical. To this day, SADX is still my most played game on steam. Now to present day, I haven't been this invested in Sonic since 2011-2012. Now I'm very passionate about fangames, even a dev member of two Sonic fangames. It's been some rough years growing older as a person, but I at least hope that Sonic will be there to help me get through those hard times. And I don't care how corny that sounds. Thanks for making this video, MugiMikey, you inspired me to share my Sonic story.

I forget exactly when but around 2007, I got into Sonic with the Sonic Classic Collection on NDS, and replayed a hell out of Green Hill in Sonic 1. Emerald Hill in Sonic 2, and surprisingly enough, almost half way through Somic 3, but just stopping at Carnival Night Zone, and I stopped at Sonic and Knuckles in Carvinal Night Zone.
But I remembered replaying those games over and over again
I also used my Dad's phone to play the Whitehead ports of Sonic 1, 2, and CD. Which is where I got to know about CD.
Oh, and I remember watching Sonic X on my TV and some dvd set.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to play any of the Adventure era games or Advance because I didn't even knew what a Gamecube or a Gameboy Advance was. And strangely, I only recently learned about it's existence about 5 years ago.
Any ways, I played Sonic and Secert Rings, Black Knight, Sega All-Star Racing, Zero Gravity, Colors, and Unleashed.
With some that I completed and some I didn't.
Then I remember asking my mom to buy me a Xbox 360 just so I can play Sonic Generations, since it wasn't on Wii
A lot of nostalgia is coming back to me as I'm typing this out. Here's hoping Frontiers will be as impactful and fun for the next Sonic fans and myslef included
