    11:51 Yes, Bonz COULD attack with his mammoth if he brought it back with Premature Burial. This case happened in Battle City's first duel.
    Against the Exodia hunter, Yugi uses Monster Reborn to bring back Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast (who'd been Tributed for Summoned Skull earlier) and uses it to destroy the Exodia head on the field.

      Lol. In my "fantasy remake" idea about Bonz. He's just there to make we the viewers,"Omg. Why is this ugly fool still around? Bro. We know he's a zombie duelist. So what. Get rid of him?". When he shows up his deck will be different and upgraded. Just think of Bonz's upgrade deck as similar to the Zombie Madness structure deck in the later seasons. Yes he's also with Weevil and Rex. The loser Trio. Yes he also join the Dartz and after the KC Grand Championship he will be out of the show.
      Bonz's deck in order by seasons.
      1. Duelist Kingdom. Mostly zombie vanilla monsters, the monsters that appeared in the show, equip cards and so on. Pretty much a "playground deck" that we had as kids we build our "zombie deck" on EBT Foodstamp.
      2. Battle City. A few vanilla 1600 to 1800 level 4 beaters, a few effect monsters such as Fear from the Dark, Wandering Mummy, Pyramid Turtle and Fushion Richie as his main boss monster(Yes. That crappy monster). A Spell cards such as Book of Life, Foolish Burial, Pot of Greed or so and a few traps but nothing special.
      3. We skip to season 4. Dartz aka the Shadow. Now his deck is more focus on getting Despair from the Dark out. Has zombies like Regenerating Mummy that special summon if they are milled out from hand.
      4. Now we go to season 5 but only up to the KC Grand Champion ship. Now his deck is all about Vampire Lord, getting the Lord out asap, Vampire Lady, Pyramid zombie, spirit reaper and has Vampire Genesis. Pretty much Zombie Madness structure deck combo.
      Anyway sorry for the long comment. I feel like if minor characters like Bonz, Weevil, Rex, Tea...hell man..even Tristan or as such were given more screen time and duel once in every season or so we are likely to see what type of deck they will play or switch too.

    I don't think Bonz could have won even if he summoned Crass Clown in face-up defense mode and assuming the four unknown cards in Bakura's hand were useless. Bakura could just attack over Crass Clown with The Earl of Demise and set Spiritualistic Medium so it could be used as a quick-play spell. On Bonz's turn, he would probably summon Armored Zombie and attack over The Earl of Demise with The Great Mammoth of Goldfine, then attack directly with Armored Zombie. But when Bonz attacks with The Great Mammoth of Goldfine, Bakura would just activate his face-down Spiritualist Medium and discard the four cards, inflicting both the 1800 battle damage and possibly the 300 effect damage if he had activated Skull Invitation. Bonz would probably activate Nightmare's Steel Cage and end his turn. Bakura would then draw Ectoplasm and win.

    12:15 If my understanding is correct then yes, Bonz would indeed be able to attack since the ruling is "Fusion Summoned monsters cannot attack to the turn they are summoned" since using Premature Burial would mean that's a Special Summon then it would be able to attack.

    • @Vanitas42
      @Vanitas42 2 місяці тому +1

      i think the wording here still confuses. it’s when a fusion monster is specifically fusion summoned. since Premature is just a generic Special summon and his mammoth was properly already fusion summoned, it’s both a valid target AND he could attack the moment it hit the field since it wasn’t a fusion summon.

    • @Vanitas42
      @Vanitas42 2 місяці тому +2

      @@MrEffectfilmsthat’s where the rules prevent that. any extra deck monsters (in this case, just fusion monsters) must have been properly summoned first before they can be affected by things like Reborn or Premature. you can dump them straight from the extra deck to GY to get any sent to gy affects or banish from gy effects, but you couldn’t special summon them from the gy unless they were first properly summoned.
      So dumping a fusion monster directly to the gy and then reviving it doesn’t work.

  • @DropsofJupiterReal
    @DropsofJupiterReal 2 місяці тому +37

    I have a theory why they summon their Fusion Materials, the old ruling for Poly says the materials need to be on the field, and you can't fuse from the hand it wasn't until a different printing of Poly where you can use hand or field. So I think they use the old ruling for Poly before its first errata.

    • @snowboundwhale6860
      @snowboundwhale6860 2 місяці тому +6

      This lines up with how DK Fusion was consistently depicted as combining monsters that were presently on the field, and how fusion material monsters would never reappear in a duel post-fusion during that arc. Battle City changed the rules a lot but it was still written directly following and would still be figuring out the details, so summoning fusion materials could be seen as a vestigial habit.

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar 2 місяці тому +1

      i wish modern cards got errata'd to balance themselves more, like they did Goyo guardian and as recently as Firewall Dragon (though there's no way they would ban a main protag's ace monster). I think retrains just set a bad precident that if a card is bad or is broken, we have to wait for them to print an entirely new card wtih the fixed effect so we can literally NEVER play the old card again. SO many archetypes are literally unplayable in the modern TCG because their important monster was banned instead of errata'd to only work with thier own archetype, just to be abused by another archetype that didn't need the help but ended up pulling off FTKs, and what do they ban? Not the abusive archetype that's already good, but the weaker archetype that NEEDED the help and can't get it.
      Even worse is how these cards are banned, and then here comes an archetype with a card that literally does waht the banned card does AND more without any weakness and is super easy to summon. Like "Oh I can't use this card anymore cause it lets you cheat 2 monsters from the graveyard, but here comes Tearlaments cheating TEN cards WITH TEMPO!" Thankfully Duel links is balanced better....and actually playable.

    • @byronsenior6499

      Thing is errataing the card kinda strips it off its pride. The most infamous example being Chaos Emperor Dragon. Like it's almost more insulting to do that than a retrain. “Here’s your card back, we just took away everything you like about it.”

    It's definitely funny how Bonz and his group were just sacrificial lambs so Bakura could get in to the tournament finals. Also hilarious to think these guys thought they were GOOD enough to get to that level. Like think about it, it's pretty much hinted at (at least from what I recall in the dub) that their collection of Locator Cards was through this method of just scaring people so they never dueled. So what would happen if they got to the finals and Bonz went up against ANY of the other finalists? Maybe he would have gone up against Ra and not Mai.
    Also I think the other two guys were IN the Tournament as well as I remember seeing Seeker, the Exodia Rare Hunter, scrolling through duelists and both Sid and Zigore are listed as participants it seems (extra fun fact, according to the Rare Hunter data base the most likely Rarest Card for each is Bonz with Call of the Haunted, Sid with Firewing Pegasus, and Zigore with Twin Headed Thunder Dragon) but they only managed to gather 4 locator cards? What were they going to do since the deadline for entry was so close? I guess probably mug other guys and hope they wouldn't get caught.

Tho back then they did still duel for Star Chips, since Bandit Keith was coaching them and giving them rare cards to boost their decks (Keith at the time was the American dueling champion.)
      Without Keith, maybe they felt they weren't good enough to win their locator cards in time, so they decided to skip the dueling process and just steal them.

    I think you missed an important point here and it's not the question what his other cards were. As you mentioned before, set spell cards act as quick play cards. So even if Bonz played perfectly and got his fusion monster and his clown on the field (while keeping Premature Burial in his hand), it wouldn't have mattered. Bakura attacks the clown and sets his spell face down. Next turn if Bonz tries to attack over Bakura's monster, he just activates his Spiritualistic Medium card. Even if Bonz had not activated his Skull invitation trap card, that would leave him with less than 1000 life points, so Bakura would win with Ectoplasma that he draws.
    The only way out for Bonz is that he smells that this is a card that can kill his mammoth, so he doesn't attack AND he plays Nightmare Steelcage. However, playing Nightmare Steelcage in this situation would be weird. So no matter how I view it, Bonz had no chance.

    • @Gnowimaster
      @Gnowimaster 2 місяці тому +1

      Question! Maybe I forgot something but if Bonz did play the clown in defence mode and Bakura would destroy it with his Earl... then Bonz wouldn't loose his lifepoints like he did because of the Attackposition Mammoth or not?
      Then again he would loose the points when he would attack with his Mammoth and Bakura would use the Spiritualistic Medium to protect his Earl, right?

    • @DarknessDpa
      @DarknessDpa 2 місяці тому +1

      Ahh but you yourself are forgetting that there was a way that Bonz didn't need to activate Premature Burial who has a LP cost to activate which in that case Bonz would have enough LPs to survive the Echtoplasm Blast.

    • @Modie
      @Modie 2 місяці тому +2

      @@Gnowimaster
      Yes, that was the idea, he would lose the life points once he attacked. Which is why his only way out is to not attack and play Nightmare Steelcage. Though, I guess there is a second way out. He attacks, loses life points, but since he didn't play Premature Burial yet, he would survive Ectoplasma. But that would require him to know that this was the card Bakura drew and not an actual monster.

    • @Modie
      @Modie 2 місяці тому +1

      @@DarknessDpa
      Yes, I noticed, but if he doesn't play Premature Burial, then he can only win if he knows that Bakura draws Ectoplasma. Because from his point of view, Bakura currently has the stronger monster, so he either needs to play Premature Burial to get a stronger monster on the field or he plays Nightmare Steelcage. In which case, he can't attack either, so if Bakura draws a monster, he wins. The only way for him to win is to expect Extoplasma, because then he can play a monster in defense mode, let Bakura attack the next turn, since he won't draw a monster and then play Premature Burial. But again, now we are assuming that Bonz not only knows Bakura's deck, but what he draws when.

    • @moselzag5451
      @moselzag5451 2 місяці тому

      @@Modie
      Premature would be able to act as a Quick-Play, so realistically Bonz would set it and only use it if Steel Cage was dodged somehow. A field wiper like Heavy Storm wouldn't matter, but if Bakura drew MST then flipping Premature would save him.
      So, Bonz attacks, spell is activated to boost Bakuras monster, Bonz activates Steel Cage and sets Premature. Bakura draws Ectoplasmer, and likely won't activate it as it wouldn't be game and would leave him with nothing. He'd probably set it.
      Then it's entirely speculation, but Bonz could've absolutely gotten further in, and possibly won if he drew a single life point booster or Monster Reborn.

    Definitely one of those duels where the misplays are fairly well-justified by the narrative, ie; Bonz was always pretty clearly a fairly middling duelist given his showing in Duelist Kingdom and Bakura is clearly just playing with his food XD
    Also regarding the 'What if Bonz won?' musings, it's worth noting that it's pretty explicitly stated that Change of Heart of Bakura's rarest card, since that's the card Yugi won from him in the BC Semi-Finals, so Bonz would most likely get it from Bakura here.
    Which rather amusingly would mean that Bonz winning might not actually cause much of a difference in the long run, as Yugi would then presumably still get the Change of Heart from Bonz after trouncing him in the Semis XD

Maybe The Snake Hair is just, like, Bonz's favorite monster, or something? Like how Jaden always tries to summon Flame Wingman at the first opportunity.

    9:40 -Half true. We had not seen someone try to escape their own duel but we had been given an idea of what shadow magic does to preserve a duel or even plot. When Yugi Dueled Pegasus, he made the duel a shadow duel with only Yugi and himself contained. Joey (I think) tried to enter the purple sphere but found he could not and even Pacman telepirted ot the other side of the bridge when trying to run right through it. A shadow duel is contained in a pocket dimention that can't be entered or existed by physical means for the duration of rhe duel. Only spiritual energy was able to break through and this was possibly partially due to the powers of the Puzzle. The puzzle is its own pocket dimention that was immune to the adverse affects of the shadow duel (why Yugi's should was not tkaing severe damage while inside during their mind shuffle). It is possible this acted as a doorway, allowing the spirit energy of the focused friends into the duel space through it. As far as I'm aware, this is not confirmed and we don't see something simailr except with Mai and Joey when she faced Merik but that may have bee. For another reason I'm about to talk about. We will later form this Bones episode see Merik use his shadow powers to essentially create a shadow tournament situation. The Blimp can not reach out to anyone yhrough its communications and seems incapable of straying from its set pathway while the tournament does this as a result of Merik's power. One explaintion is that this made Joey and Yugi able to interfere in the duel but Mai was not fully capable of recognizing him at all times because the rules of the shadow duel itself were still somewhat in effect. Another ecplaintion is that they were all part of the shadow duel like Bones sidekicks were here. I think the best explaintion is a mix. The others down face a penalty because they aren't part of Mai's duel but can see and interfere to an extent because the shadow duel is contained withing the shadow tourney spell. They ARE participants in the shadow tournament. Even Mai and Tristin are spectators to it on the blimp. Yami Bakura is a nasty ass bastard with a piece of Zorcs soul and thus some of his power. He would havevno problem physically or ethically including all the jackassed who tried to jump him in on the shadow duel even though only one was playing. Basically he did not tell them all their chips were riding on Bones' one hand. To anyone else walking through the area, a larger shadow barrier was likely visible and just like Joey trying to get in. The same think happened with this escape attempt. This actually makes me wonder about the dangers og the blimp..would someone falling just pass back to the blimp again because of the shadow barrier keeping it encapsulated from the outside world? There are a couple tense moments that may not have been so much if this was the case in hindsight.

I think if the duel continued further he'd bring out like a monster that rises from the grave by discarding a card or something
    Edit: You also forgot something important, bakura doesn't just duel to win, he duels to break his opponent, remember he did that whole "do you know the legend of this cemetary" routine before summoning headless knight, having him come back from the dead, and basically did a whole performance to rattle bonz and throw him off

    Good choice of duel to cover for the Halloween season. I was going to mention that Bonz wouldn't have been able to summon Armored Zombie that first turn because of how it was initially summoned in the Anime by Bonz, but then you mention him just Normal Summoning Dragon Zombie without going through that process (Dragon Zombie, Clown Zombie, and Armored Zombie were all summoned the same way in the Anime initially), so that disproved that idea.
    Also, while we never see them duel, based on what we see from Seeker's computer it's shown that one of Bonz's companions has Firewing Pegasus as his rarest card and the other has Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon as his rarest card, it might be interesting to try and reverse engineer decks for them based on that little knowledge and the cards available up to the point in the Anime we see in this duel.

  • @REALmikegordan

    Two things about Battle City that needs to be addressed: First up, for a Fusion Summon, all Fusion materials must be on the field. Second up, duelists can only set one card per turn, which is why Bakura doesn't set Headless Knight. That, and Bakura's playing psychological warfare with Bonz and company in order to throw them off their game.
    Edit: Another thing to note, following your suggestion, Bakura still would have won, but a whole turn earlier. 'Cause the only way this would work is if Bonz had the foresight not to set and activate his trap card, and he left Armored Zombie in attack mode. Bakura, in this instance, probably would still activate his spell to power up his Earl of Demise in order to deal a whoppin' 2500 LP. If Bonz already activated his trap, it'd also deal an additional 300 LP, which would have lost Bonz the duel either way. And even if Bonze showed a bit of restraint, there's no reason to suggest that Bakura would have activated that spell card straight away as opposed to summoning other monsters in order to get over Bonz's field. It's very likely Bakura hand consisted mostly of monster cards if he saw fit to discard his entire hand, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Bakura decided to play something as comparably strong as, say, Headless Knight or Baron of the Fiend Sword to deal with Crass Clown.
    Edit 2: Also note, whether or not anyone can enter or exit the battleground for a shadow game is all up to the person initiating it. Which is why Serenity and Odion were able to enter the site of Yami Marik's duels against Joey and Yami Yugi respectively. The person initiating the Shadow Duel determines the rules of the game.

      The first two instances involved the prototype Duel Disc, which essentially treats cards on the field and in the hand as one and the same, with only one main monster out at a time (with exceptions). The rules regarding fusion summoning had been changed to better reflect the real world by the time of Yugi & Kaiba vs. Dartz, so in total, Blue-Eyes Ultimate only saw the field 3 times while Battle City rules were still in effect. The only time this rule was broken was the duel between Yugi and Noah, which has rules built off of those set in Battle City, but given its status as a filler arc, those rules were not borrowed whole-sale.
      In the other two instances where Blue-Eyes Ultimate hit the field during Battle City, all three Blue-Eyes had to be on the field.

    At this point it was all up to speculation as the dual didn't last any longer. With the way this version of the dual went, I can still see Bonz losing as Bakura just needs to hold out until he draws Monster Reborn (if he has it in his deck) and then he has won with Earl and Ectoplasm.

    My take on the question "Can Great Mammoth attack the turn it's revived?" is yes, it can. The rule seems to only apply when summoned through Polymerization. Remember Serenity's St. Joan and Kaiba's XYZ Dragon Cannon could attack the turn they were summoned, and neither were brought out via Poly. So imma say Battle City rules allow Fusion monsters to attack the turn they're revived.

    • @Amitlu
      @Amitlu 2 місяці тому +4

      I guess that explains how they excused Perfect Machine King attacking on his first turn too.
      Though it really shouldn't work that way. But I suppose the writers were tired of making up quick-attack-like cards.
      XYZ Dragon Cannon seems to be a special case regardless. Kaiba used it more like a union monster in that duel.

      In the episode proper neither the scene nor the card appear, although we know where it would have gone, as Bastion heads out to investigate Alice in the yellow dorm, and later Jaden finds him unconscious in the forest.
      It would have gone between those two scenes.
      As a bonus fact, in Transformers Super God Masterforce one episode preview shows the Decepticon leader Black Zarak attacking Disneyland, where everyone is wearing Mickey ears, yet it's also not in the actual episode, probably due to fear of copyright strikes from Disney.

    If Bonz had summoned Crass Clown along with Great Mammoth of Goldfine, it'd depend on if he played it face-up or face-down as often players in the anime/manga played monsters face-up such as when Kaiba played Dragon Seeker face-up. If Crass Clown was played, Bakura could have killed it in battle forcing Bonz to attack Earl of Demise during his turn (drawing Nightmare Steel Cage) with Great Mammoth of Goldfine. Doing so, Bakura would activate Spiritualistic Medium as a Quick-Play and get the same result (if he doesn't bother playing any other card). This would then depend on if Bonz plays Nightmare Steel Cage, which would prevent both players from attacking for 2 turns, or revive Great Mammoth of Goldfine had he saved Premature Burial to try to attack again (assuming Premature Burial can play as a Quick-Play as sometimes cards randomly do that in the series, if not, then it wouldn't matter as Earl of Demise would still have 4000 ATK for the turn).

    These videos are super cool simply because it shows the power of writing. When you think about it, any duel in the series that gets a whole game off makes it pretty clear that if the writing wanted, either character could definitely win. Makes for nice "What If?s" like these. Since you have to have some semblance of suspense the opposition has to have something at least somewhat decent and we often see both players hands, so now we have this and I love it. It's kinda the anime way of how the games' story works where after you finish a duel you can swap and play the antag of the duel's deck. It really shows you how close some of these duels can go. 😊 Also quick edit: If Bonz did win and Bakura's prize card was DB, would he get the whole set? Or just the trap? 🧐

Ultimately though, he was practically harmless and certainly didn’t deserve to be killed like this. He was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Luckily (very much later) Atem would avenge them by destroying Zorc (though he didn’t have them in mind at the time LOL) PS I heard some people say that Kazuki Takahashi clarified that Bonz and his gang were brought back later, but the reason we never see them after this is because Takahashi forgot about them. I actually have a small, little theory, that could explain a lot of Bonz misplays in this duel. It is a little whacky though.
    We do see that the Battle City Rules are still new to most players by the start of the tournament. After all, Joey also still needs to remember that monsters with 5 stars or more now need a tribute to be summoned. And unless you dueled a few times, you'd probably have a difficult time, adapting to them at first.
    And we know that Bonz and his friends haven't legitimately dueled even ONCE during the tournament, prior to this one, as they only scared other duelists into dropping their discs and locator cards. But we know that Bonz does know the rules of the tournament, after all, he knows that he won't be able to cheat, once the finals begin, at least not like this anymore.
    That being said, I think, due to not having dueled with the official Battle City rules yet, he's still USED to playing by Duelist Kingdom rules... or general Duel Monsters rules, before Battle City came along. And given that during Duelist Kingdom, fusion summons also were conducted only with monsters on the field, Bonz probably just instinctively tried to prepare for his fusion summon by trying to put his Snake Hair on the field, so he could fuse it with Dragon Zombie, as soon as he draws it.
    This would both explain why he risked Snake Hair so early and why he wasted his normal summon on Dragon Zombie, as he would still be so used to the old rule set. And thinking about it, it would actually make for a funny little joke: had Bonz not cheated himself to 5 locator cards and dueled legitimately up until this point, he might have realized this and actually played correctly, winning the duel here.
    Hence, what do we learn? Cheaters never prosper!

    Worth bearing in mind, Bonz had Bandit Keith coaching him through his duel with Joey. This time, Bonz can't rely on anyone else to help him strategize, hence the misplays. I don’t know why I like coming back to this duel in particular and watch it. Probably because of the atmosphere once the duel started.
    13:14 Ectoplasmer is a Continuous Spell and not a Field Spell. Not sure why he played it like that since Arcana played Ectoplasmer correctly, but it didn’t really matter in the end.
    If it wasn’t for the Battle City Fusion Monster rules where all of them have summoning sickness, then Bonz would’ve made things slightly harder for Yami Bakura to beat over Bonz’s Mammoth.
    Also, yes the premature burial play could’ve been saved for reviving the Mammoth if Bonz just fusion summoned earlier and then attack over the Earl of Demise.
    Then again, Bakura’s Fiend deck was later revealed to be running Dark Necrofear in his duel with Yugi.
    I like to speculate that if Earl of Demise went down, Bakura would’ve brought out Dark Necrofear after waiting at least 1 more turn (ideally with one more fiend in the grave added to make 3), boost up in some manner, and then attack to gain back the advantage.
    Bakura Wouldn’t even need to call on Dark Sanctuary and Destiny Board at that point either.
    Good video!

    Although this duel was pretty much in Bakuras favor, I will also say this, alongside Mariks duel with Bakura, is why this dude is my favorite Duelist of all time.
    The destructive playstyle was unique and the cards were always freak *but* cool!
    ....Having said that though, even if Bonz did the plays you mentioned, i don't think he would have won; I say this, because of Bakuras hand that had been discarded; at any point he could have probably summoned Dark Necrofear (if he had it), or use something like Dark Spirit of the Silent to ensure that the Armoured Zombie/Crass Clown would have attacked instead of the Mammoth.
    While it would have been very funny if Bakura did lose, he always had the "backup plan" if he "died".
