  • HOW TO GET RESIDENCY IN MEXICO (Pt. 3) | should it take THIS LONG?! // This is the third video in my series about applying for temporary residency in Mexico. Getting residency in Mexico can be a difficult & time-consuming process, but if you want to move to Mexico legally, it’s a necessary one. In this three-part series, I share everything you need to know about how to apply for the temporary resident visa for Mexico in 2021!
    If you’re thinking about moving to Mexico from the US, then watch this video to learn about the final steps of how to get residency in Mexico plus the TRUE STORY of how long it took me to get temporary residency in Mexico. As an expat in Mexico, I give you all the details about my experience applying for residency in Mexico including how much it costs to work with an immigration consultant in Queretaro.
    While it’s possible to live in Mexico without a temporary resident visa, Americans moving to Mexico won’t be able to open a bank account or register a vehicle. In order to live in Mexico as an expat and fully enjoy your life in Mexico, you should consider applying for the temporary resident visa.

    I'm going through this process now in Merida. When I first arrived here in January, the INM offfice told me that they recently changed their process and now they would be able to print my temporary resident card and give it to me the same day. I was so happy to hear that! They also told me I needed to book an appointment online, and the next appt was not until March. So I waited for my appt in March, got approved, and they give me some super confusing, lame excuse that they can't print it out the same day and that I'll need to wait another 2-3 weeks which in Merida means a month lol. To anyone reading this, I highly recommend going through this process in a major city like Mexico city because I'm pretty sure they have always given you your card the same day. Some of these offices in smaller towns have some real high iq folks running them that will literally forget your application and take an eternity to process it. You have been warned. Start the process in Mexico City, book your appt, and jump on a bus or plane to a smaller town with a lower cost of living and wait it out, then come back. Also, keep in mind that every city is different! Some cities allow you to wait in line super early and get processed the same day; others make you book an appt and they are booked way out for months. Not sure what the process is in Mexico city but I would imagine that they are very well organized and can accommodate.

    Congratulations on getting your visa!!!
    I have been following your journey and I am soon to start my own.
    The Mexican Consulate in Toronto is booking appointments two months ahead of time due to COVID so I probably will not be taking my first steps toward a temporary visa for a while but I will have plenty of time to get all my info in order.

      Hi, Leland! Glad to be back! If you have the means, hiring the help of someone like Ivonne from Host Relocation can help to streamline the process. She knows all the people who work at INM, so if something is holding up your temporary residency application, she's going to get answers. All that being said, I think it's definitely possible to complete the temporary residency process on your own. If it weren't a pandemic, I would have returned to INM earlier to check the status & likely received my card much sooner. Thanks for watching!

How long would it have taken for you to find out that your approval letter was sitting on top of some file cabinet at INM? You were also able to avoid having to wait at the INM building simply to begin your inquiry. I loved the video. I went through similar "adventures" when I got my citizenship in Portugal. First, my Brazilian wife and I submitted the application on the same day but mine was approved six months before hers. She was really pissed and thought it was favoritism for an American. Then the official letter arrived granting citizenship but my birthdate was twenty years later than the real one. I had got twenty years younger. I had to call the Registrar and they told me I would have to send a letter spelling out the mistake. I did so and about a month later the citizenship was published in the Diario Oficial, the government newspaper. Another crazy mixup was when I renewed my Portuguese drivers licence and they told me that I couldn't because I already had a license in Spain. I have never lived in Spain. After a phone call to the Spanish authorities the problem was solved. Somewhere in Spain someone is driving with a drivers license with my name. It was worse in Brazil. When I went to pick up my Brazilian drivers license they told me that I had already picked it up. They even showed me a signature, which was completely different from mine. I threatened to call the police and went down to my car. From an upstairs window a man shouted, Sr........... we found your license. The forged signature was never explained and I did not ask. I was just glad to have my license.

      Hi, my newest video actually covers the benefits of both permanent and temporary residency. I think in your comment you hit on the biggest surprise. It's also important to consult a tax expert that has experience working with foreigners from your home country living in Mexico. Temporary residents don't pay taxes, but permanent residents who live in Mexico more than 183 days per year are, from what I understand, on the hook for Mexican taxes.

      @alex-wittman  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching, Chris! You have six months to use the one-time entry visa to enter Mexico beginning the day it's adhered to your passport. Whether or not you decide to hire someone to help you with the process depends largely on your financial means & level of Spanish. If you don't feel comfortable filling out forms or speaking to immigration officials in Spanish & have the financial means to pay an agency like Host Relocation, I say go for it. I just finished mine last thursday in Mazatlan. From the time I left the house to the time I had the coveted little green card in my hand was about 3 hours. About 45 - 60 minutes at the bank paying the fee (covid time, they only let about 8 people in the bank at a time) and another 1:20 sitting in the INM waiting for them to do whatever it was they were doing. Photo, finger prints, signing some documents only took about 10 minutes. All in all, it was pretty painless... Can you legally work in Mexico (for a Mexican company/org) with a temporary resident permit?

    • @alex-wittman
      @alex-wittman  3 роки тому

      Hi, Mary! You will need to apply for a separate work visa to legally work in Mexico. Generally, the company or organization has to sponsor you which means finding the job first.

    So, ok first of all great video you do explain very well and talk very clear in your talks. So, do you know that is it that much paper work and going there and there if you apply for a permanent Visa ? And why did you not go for that ? Maybe you or you guys don't make the money needed a month to do that. I heard that you have to earn at least 2500 Dollars a month solo to meet the formula. So if you know or someone else who reads this I would be glad to know. I'm retired and earn more an that 2500 a month in my retirement income. I been planning on moving to Mexico also like so many Americans do after they retire. But my place will be from what I think now Guadalajara since I been there a lot as a tourist over the years. And then I have some friends there also and they are Mexicans and live in Mexico. Ok, they are professional people living a good life in Guadalajara. TCB.

      Hi, thanks for watching! Temporary residency was a better fit for me. You can find the financial requirements for permanent residency here: consulmex.sre.gob.mx/detroit/index.php/servicios-para-extranjeros/visas-en-ingles Exact amounts can vary slightly from consulate to consulate as well change based on the exchange rate. Right now, at the Detroit consulate, retirees need to show a minimum income of $2,722 US dollars per month for the past six months or a minimum average balance of $108,852 USD per month for the past 12 months in savings or investments.

      Hi, Mike! Congrats to your daughter! Once she's married, she will be able to skip the consulate/visa step and apply for residency in Mexico. Instead of having to prove economic solvency, she will need a copy of her marriage certificate with an apostilla (the stamp that makes US documents legal in Mexico). She will do two years of temporary residency to start & then be able to get her permanent residency. As for insurance companies, I have my insurance through Grupo Nacional Provincial. I don't know the ins & outs of their policies regarding pre-existing conditions, but it could be a good place to start.

    How difficult was it to rent a home with just a tourist visa? I would think that would be impossible except an Airbnb? Sorry you don't have more videos on your exploits in Queretaro. I'm very interested in what Queretaro looks like outside the colonial part of the city. It is my understanding that Queretaro is a very modern City? Maybe some videos showing the non tourist parts of the city? By the way, your a very attractive lady!!

      My particular landlord wasn't concerned with my residency status as long as I had a guarantor to sign on my behalf, which would have been required whether I was a resident or not. As far as sharing more of Querétaro, I would most definitely like to do so, but that has been difficult during the pandemic. Hopefully that will change in 2021! Thanks for watching 🤓

    • @alex-wittman
      @alex-wittman  3 роки тому

      @@forgednotcast612 it all depends on what you want to be near & the kind of experience you want. If you prefer to live outside the city center, many of the colonias are largely self-sufficient with their own restaurants, gyms, grocery stores, etc. There wouldn't be any need for you to go to the city center. While a car is certainly more convenient for getting around, Uber is very affordable & similarly, regular yellow taxis are safe and plentiful.

I should note though that some foreigners who leave every six months to reset their tourist visa have encountered trouble when trying to re-enter the country.
