Thank you for making such a good series of videos on this subject. We are only vaguely starting to consider moving to Mexico permanently and are more leaning toward being snowbirds for a few years before taking such a step. But I really love Mexico so much. There is a different pace of life here and the basics are very affordable. I'll be watching a lot more of your content in order to learn everything possible. We are from Canada, but I guess the same rules still apply.

First of all, thanks Alex for the best and most informative videos!! I went through the process just as you spelled out over the course of your videos and I now have my temporary residency! A couple of changes as of May 3, 2023 in the Queretaro INM office - I went on a Wednesday, I did not stand in line or get there early, I just showed up at 10am and after a half an hour of standing around blankly, a person came to the "info desk" who reviewed my documents and gave me an "appointment" time and number for the same day ( I was number 60 for 11am ). Naturally, 11am came and went but I was called up eventually and the officer saw all the documents I had (I didn't have any color copies, just black and white was fine) but I did make a mistake on one of the forms. I was told I can just step outside into one of the copy shops and get it corrected - that cost me 150 pesos for a corrected reprint and the lady in the shop did all the typing for me. The correction I needed to make was my postal code for my apartment so please make sure your address is absolutely perfect from postal code, colonia (neighborhood) and everything to avoid this hiccup! With the corrections made, I was able to get back to the same officer window and finish my process. I was able to pay right there, took my pictures right there, and after signing a few things, and getting interviewed with basic questions, I got my card. It did take all day in the office but I was out of there by 2:30pm. I'm still learning Spanish and I didn't have a lawyer help me out so I was a little nervous, but things worked out. I hope this helps anyone on their journey!

Fantastic Video! Make note of the point that the PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU at Immigration makes the determination to approve or deny. Just because you ''qualify' is no guarantee. I told the immigration office I qualify at which point the officer berated me and informed me that he determines who qualifies, not me. Be nice. I did get mine done last year.

INM offices may require you to be a resident in their district. Thus if you attempt to use one of those locations that still accepts walk ins yet live in another district they are very likely to tell you that you must apply there.
As of Monday Nov 7th 2022, the 5 AM arrival to get one of the 30 daily available appointment slots will resume. At least, at San Miguel de Allende. Supposed to be nationwide.
I have to ask, if you had to do it again would you do the process on your own like you did, or would you hire a legal team to assist? I’m retiring at the end of 2023 and looking at heading down to Cancun area early 2024 and they have a law office in Playa del Carmen that specializes in assisting people in this process. just thought I’d ask what your opinion of that would be

I just got my Permanente Visa through the Laredo Consulate last week (17/02/2022). I live in San Miguel due Allende. I flew back on the 18th and my appointment to complete the process here is the 17th of March. Almost the full 30 days.

FYI; I requested an appointment for Temporary Residency from my local Consulate (by email) prior to full retirement several months past. I was informed by the Consulate official that I should be retired before applying. I have since retired and an appointment has been scheduled for the Temporary Resident Visa application process.

Thanks so much for your videos Alex! My wife and I just moved to Centro in QRO a couple weeks ago and I will admit that I have used your videos to reference a lot of information. One question I had was about the Temporary Resident Card: I asked a few expats and they said that as long as your appointment was made within the 30 day window that is fine (even if your appointment is after the 30 days). Do you happen to know if this is true? We booked our appointment as soon as we got here but the earliest availability was in March.
Yes, as long as you make the appointment within the first 30 days you're in the clear! I actually talk about this in the video I just published :)

My husband and I just received visas a month ago. We're getting ready to go to Mexico for permanent visa (husband) and temporary visa (me) process. We are both retired also. What was interesting to us was they don't consider us as a married couple but individually. OUR money is together, yet I don't bring in as much as my husband. Strange but will work it out.

to prove economic solvency does the one year time period that the money needs to be in your account apply to every situation or if there was a sale of an investment property with proof of such accepted without it being in your account for the year?

Can I go to ANY consulate I want to? Or do I HAVE to go to the one nearest me? There is one further from me which is MUCH easier to work with (based on our own experience with a close relative).
You need an appointment now, but I’d suggest walking in and speaking with someone prior at the information desk 1st. They are very helpful and will tell you everything you need and give you all of the relevant forms. Some INM offices (such as Guadalajara) have appointments available within a few days. Guadalajara also now takes the required photos on site. Again, pay a visit to your local INM office to find out what is required.

@@alex-wittman … It was open in late Nov. 2021. There was a woman at the entrance that was in charge of lining up people with appointments. I told her that I only needed to speak with information and she walked me in. In my experience, the people staffing the information desk all know the process and forms required, which are often quite different from what the website says is required. The staff at the windows who actually process the documents only seem to have a “checklist”. If they find a document missing or with information that doesn’t match their system, they end the process and send you on your way without checking all of your documents and telling you what all is missing. It’s quite possible to be rejected for “line item 5”, then leave, correct that item, and upon return, be rejected for “line item 6” They aren’t there to try to make sense of things, just to check off each required line item one at a time. It really doesn’t seem possible to try to approach it logically, that’s why I would recommend the info desk before your appointment.

Most web browsers can translate the web pages. But I would recommend a facilitator to help you through the process.
I went to the consulate in Denver, Colorado. The $ requirements are pretty much the same as in @backpacking brunette’s info. However, our paperwork did NOT say after tax income, it just said income.

The financial requirements per month that you mentioned in the video, is that per person? We are a retired couple, so unsure if we need that amount each, or if there is another figure that applies to married couples.

We are in the beginning stages of moving to Mexico. Here are some of my thoughts I did just now order your guide to moving to Mexico. But before I get into all of that can you please tell me one if no matter what my intention is to move to Mexico should I get a temporary residence visa? That way I can move around and see which area would be best for my family and also be able to get a bank account while being there.
If you know you want to live in Mexico & you meet the financial requirements for the visa, I definitely recommend pursuing residency!

Guys I highly recommend going to a big city to do this process now, these small town INM offices are very incompetent their processes change like the weater, and they are ultra backed up. Also, regarding the 30 days and having your appoitnment occur after the 30 days, it doesn't matter; as long as you are able to prove that you have an appt scheduled, you can't get into trouble. This is according to the lady at the info desk at the inm office in Merida. I also just had my appt a few days ago, and had to wait waayy over the 30 days, and they had no problem with it at all and didn't even ask questions. In fact, the lady didn't say a word to me the entire "interview" besides "buenos dias". It was extremely easy. They claim that they also print your card the same day, but they ran into some kind of complication and were unable to print mine so I have to wait another 2-3 weeks.
Same. I got to QRO at the end of January and scheduled my appointment 6 weeks out. They just want you to *start* the canje process, in this case, schedule the appointment. Keep a printout of the appointment confirmation with you just in case. The lady didn't care that I had an expired FMM and it went smoothly.
Alex, the Miami FL consulate is now stating that you cannot use them unless you are a resident of Florida.

Wow!! $1,600 to $2,400 on temporary visa! This will truly affect any retiree thinking they can live in Mexico on a Social Security only income. Something in terms ideology has really changed in Mexico in terms of the expat community?
Prior to the changes, the Detroit consulate had some of the lowest financial requirements in the US.
There are plenty of other countries in Latin America where retirees can easily go to. For example, Ecuador only requires an income of $400 (US) a month.
@@alex-wittman strictly speaking the solvency requirements didn't change, the minimum wage did. Then, as now, you had to show monthly income of 300 times the daily minimum wage for the last six months, or savings/investments of 5,000 times the daily minimum wage for the last twelve. However, the minimum wage itself has changed drastically over the past three years, from MXN $102.68 in 2019 to MXN $123.22 in 2020 to MXN $141.70 in 2021 to MXN $ 172.87 today, so the solvency requirements shot up with it.
I don't know that Detroit's requirements were *really* any lower than anyone else's until they finally got around to updating their web site last week. I do know that consulates generally have been terrible about keeping their web sites current, regardless of what their actual requirements are. When I first visited Raleigh in very late December 2021, they set me up an appointment for late January 2022, and quoted me the 2021 requirements without dropping a hint anything might change with the new year (which they really should have known, seeing as Congress had voted on this increase three weeks earlier). When I returned for my appointment in January, I *think* I was reviewed under the 2022 rules though I don't actually know this since they didn't say (I qualify under either). Yet to this day, Raleigh's web site still quotes the 2019 requirements while purporting to have been last updated 12/30/21. I'd take everything I read on any of these sites with a very large grain of non-kosher salt.

Good question, but given that the 40k+ is not an arbitrary number but calculated as (i think) 20 years of minimum wage income, they kind of expect that money to be used and of course dwindle over time. So I don't think they will keep checking but I am not certain.
I can qualify my monthly income, which would drop once I were to actually move to Mexico. Do I somehow have to prove the same level of income will be maintained after receiving the temporal?

About INM walk ins - when I tried to do a walk in in Cabo San Lucas, they asked if I had a cita - when I said no they told me there wasn't any appointments for weeks and I had to get an exchange asap so they told me I could come back first thing when they opened the next day! Here in Cabo seems they're still being pretty flexibile about it.
And no more tipo infantils here in san lucas - they take the pictures when you're there. They also still let me just walk in and ask questions. One thing they required is a comprobante or receipt of payment of electricity. Since I didn't have one, they let me print out a google map picture of where I live which I thought was a little funny. Just fyi that is a requirement here!

It sounds like “applying” for permanent residency despite proof of economic solvency is impossible unless you can prove retirement age. But what about the “automatic” permanent residency granted upon completion of 4 years of temporary? Is it true that through the 4 year temp- to perm might be easier?

Sounds like the Mex gov is separating the lower from the middle-class gringos. I've been told from the Portland consulate that my wife and I need $168K EACH in bank for 12 months for permanent visa...even owning a house(s) don't count. Temp is doable but barely.
My husband and I are wanting to retire to Mexico in 2 years once our kids graduate. We currently have 10 long term rentals here in the US. We wanted to apply for permanent resident instead of wasting time and money apply for temporary and then permanent. We qualify for the income based off of the 10 rental incomes we have. The value of these properties supercedes the savings qualification. With that in mind, can we apply since we meet the income or do we truly have to be retired and how do we prove retirement?
It depends on the consulate. Some will only look to see if the financial requirements are met while others go more based on age--that's not explicitly stated on any website, but it seems to be how some consulates operate.

How long do you have after your consulate appointment in the US to conduct your immigration appointment in Mexico? Will your permanent visa expire at some point if you don’t get your residency card?
Once you have your pre-approved visa from your local Mexican Consulate, you have 60 days within which you need to be in Mexico and once here 30 days in which to convert your pre-authorozation to the physical card at your local INM where you will be living.
@@LosOGradysinMexico The one time visa is good for one entry into Mexico for 6 months. After you enter Mexico, you have 30 days to make the exchange for your residency card.

Got my temporary visa again, had to go through the process again, based on my lack of research and leaving country on vacation to thailand, but ended up getting my visa a few days ago in New Orleans I recommend this consulate. 2100$ is the minimum. But I'm medical retired. So I slide through easily, get your visa fast the prices will keep going up. I made way more than the monthly requirement so I wasn't worried had to get a letter for my six months of statement because my dad opened my bank account 12 years ago lol and he had to say that he did not hold the funds in the account. Besides that I'm enjoying cancun! Salute 🇲🇽

If both spouses meet the financial requirements, you can apply as individuals. But, if only one person does, the one who does applies for the visa & the other travels to Mexico with them as a tourist. Once the primary person has their residency card, they can link the spouse by showing your marriage certificate with an apostille. The financial requirements in Mexico to do so are significantly less...less than $1,000 USD.

Only that the bar was raised again last month, as per the Mexican minimum wage.

The length of your stay is at the discretion of the agent who checks your passport, but it seems like Mexico is mostly back to granting 180 days.
My first 180 days ends at the end of March 😆 guess I'll be going to the Philippines because I'm not gonna take a chance of being denied another 180 days even tho I love it in chiapas thx 👌 no way I can meet those requirements I'm retired military with not close to 180000 in the bank 👌😭😭😭
You do not need a savings of that amount. If your retired military with social security, you meet the financial requirements most likely.

Just got my permanent residency for Mexico in Raleigh NC and it took about 3 hours total. Only needed visa application, passport, passport photo, financial solvency documents.

When you say “savings/investment” does owning a home in Mexico qualify for an “investment”? I own a home and will be retired in 2025. Would that be the best route for me?
Qualifying for residency as a property owner in Mexico has to meet a different set of requirements. The home must be valued at a certain amount.

Can you apply for permanent residency without living in the country for 5 years and bypassing temporary residency? Does all it take is having the money? I thought I read you have to be temporary for 4 years and then apply for permanent. of course, I don't have family ties in Mexico. Thank you.
If you meet the financial requirements, you can become a permanent resident right off the bat!

The amount depends on whether you're applying for temporary or permanent residency.

If you live near Leon go to the Keosk in front of immigration, the girls there can help you at no charge. This is what I actually did recently, a lot of what you read is not correct. I don’t speak Spanish, I did this with no attorney, just with the girls help. If your tourist visa has expired you can apply for a temporary resident visa at immigration in Leon, it is located in the Factory Store area. You do not have to show income. I received a 4 year temporary resident visa, no BS, I just did it. The clerks there were very helpful, just be nice. After I was approved I went to the immigration office, they printed my resident card while i waited. Half of what you hear is not correct.

If you're only planning on traveling to Mexico for a short period of time, the tourist visa works just fine!
