How to get the "And Justice for All" GUITAR TONE - James Hetfield (Metallica) - Bias Amp & Bias FX

- Using Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX, I show how to accurately get the guitar sound from James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) on the ...And Justice for All album.
IMPORTANT 2023 UPDATE - Some users have reported they can't find my presets when searching Bias FX 2. This seems to be a glitch in their search system. To solve the issue, type in the search field "DMO -" (yes, just DMO followed by a space and hyphen) and choose "Sort by Popularity" in the drop-down beside the search field. You should see all of my presets.
Please note many users have taken my presets and created their own versions with similar names. To make sure you are downloading my original presets, my user name in Bias FX 2 is "Dan Oliv". Also, my original presets have a lot more downloads than the non-original versions.

Bias FX 2 UPDATE - My preset featured on this video was created with the first version of Bias FX. With the release of Bias FX 2, I uploaded a new version of my preset to the tone cloud (each version of the software has its own separate tone cloud). My FX 2 preset is the same as the original version except it has a dual path for live playing (featuring a slight delay for a richer stereo sound). If you want the recording version of my preset like my video, disable the dual path and tweak any applicable settings shown on my video.
Here's the list of the gear I'm using:
. Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX guitar modeling software - metal distortion and amp simulation
. Line 6 UX-1 audio interface
. Reaper Digital Audio Workstation
. iMac with Yosemite OS
. B.C. Rich NJ Deluxe JR. V guitar with original Floyd Rose tremolo and active EMG pickups

Awesome tone! Here's a tip: put something spongy on top of those springs of the tremolo system for canceling their noise. It worked like a charm for me

If you were to use physical pedals into an amp, what would the signal chain be? Guitar->Compressor->Distortion->EQ pedal-> amp?
My favorite tone for guitar is either this or Zakk Wylde’s tone for No More Tears. He should do slipknot’s self titled album tone

We need a comprehensive how to on this. What the difference between Bias amp and Bias FX is, why do some guys on youtube let us download these "IRs" and what does an IR do on Bias amp versus what an IR does in Bias FX, like a complete detailed tutorial.

That’s crazy close man, how exactly do you use both bias fx and bias amp; do I need bias fx to do my own matches tones or can I do what you with bias amp alone?
I'd say a combination of both. I create the foundation with Bias Amp, but the type of distortion I use in Bias FX makes a big difference. It's a lot of fine tuning and trial/error with both FX and Amp.
Does bias amp go first or second in your signal chain? Do you get all your distortion from bias fx? If so is bias amp just set to clean with the eq match?

The audio in your video is recorded a few times though right, like mentioned in your latest video? You aren't actually getting that sound when playing live?
That's correct. it's a four layer recording. But yes, you'll get the same sound with the preset when playing live. Just in recording, you need to multitrack the guitar, otherwise it will sound flat and lifeless.

I just took a look and everything is there. Type "dmo" in the search box, and all my presets will appear. If not, contact Positive Grid to see what's going on with your version. Thanks for the nice feedback, btw.

I just set up my LTD EC-1000 through a Focusrite Scarlette Solo with Bias FX 2. Using Audio Technica ATH M40x headphones. Can't get any clean tones...they are all a little distorted/crunchy. Any idea what the problem could be?

@@user-xv4gu9eb2p I figured it out after...the 9v battery for my EMG pickups needed to be replaced.
Just a little bit of feedback - you have too much gain. But other than that, it was absolutely spot on. The best I've heard in ages.
Very nice video, and I think it is almost there. A little airy still. Needs more on your face, so maybe more compression and more bottom end. Still, great job.
Do I need BIAS amp 2 to be able to use your tone to it full potential? I can download it with just BIAS fx but it sounds a little different

Amazing guitar, very easy to play, fast neck ... So far I have not heard any owner say anything bad about this model. If you can buy one, it is no longer produced but can be found. You will not regret it for sure and if you don't like it for some reason you can easily sell it and return the money.

I believe you need to have the professional license of both Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX (that's what I have for both). They're considered separate products, although they're integrated with each other. Confirm with Positive Grid - email them a link to the video and ask them what license you need to get. But here's a known glitch... They just released a few days ago Bias FX 2, and people are complaining presets built in Bias FX cannot be found in the cloud, and there's no way to migrate presets from Bias FX to Bias FX 2. They said they'll fix the issue in mid-April with their next update. But if you have Bias FX (don't upgrade it...), it's just a matter of getting the professional license of Amp 2. Confirm with them... Positive Grid is great with customer service if you send them an email.
See update in the description of this video. The tone is now available in the Bias FX 2 tone cloud.
Santiago Urrego I have the demo version of bias fx 2 and I was able to download it no problem, you just have to sign into the tone cloud.

download button is greyed out, after I spent $200 bucks buying the elite version of amp and fx
Try emailing Positive Grid. They're good with customer service. I only have the standard license of FX 2 and Bias Amp 2, so these presets should be available with the Elite version. If they're not, it seems like a bug with their system. In fact, as far as I know, to download my presets only FX 2 is needed. Bias Amp 2 is only needed if you want to modify the actual amp.
@@dmometalguitar I figured it out. Evidently, you have to run the desktop version rather than the plugin through a DAW to download anything. Great sounding patch btw. I was up until 3am jamming with it.
i think you got everything but, the pickvibe sound to metal. (Pickvibe initiates the palm mute.) Check for distortion. But the frequencies sounds right, way to go.

Dan (dmometalguitar), you should've used a noise gate in on th einput. Those "metal-reverb" like squeaks on the palm mutes are disastrous (0:20 min) and on!
