How to get the "Black Album" GUITAR TONE - James Hetfield (Metallica) - Bias Amp & Bias FX
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 січ 2019
- Using Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX, I show how to accurately get the guitar sound from James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) on the Black Album.
IMPORTANT 2023 UPDATE - Some users have reported they can't find my presets when searching Bias FX 2. This seems to be a glitch in their search system. To solve the issue, type in the search field "DMO -" (yes, just DMO followed by a space and hyphen) and choose "Sort by Popularity" in the drop-down beside the search field. You should see all of my presets.
Please note many users have taken my presets and created their own versions with similar names. To make sure you are downloading my original presets, my user name in Bias FX 2 is "Dan Oliv". Also, my original presets have a lot more downloads than the non-original versions.
Did you like my presets? Support my channel by purchasing my first album, "Dark Fragments". It's available on iTunes, Amazon, eMusic and Spotify:

. Amazon: www.amazon.com/Dark-Fragments-...

Bias FX 2 UPDATE - My preset featured in this video was created with the first version of Bias FX. With the release of Bias FX 2, I uploaded a new version of my preset to the tone cloud (each version of the software has its own separate tone cloud). My FX 2 preset is the same as the original version except it has a dual path for live playing (featuring a slight delay for a richer stereo sound). If you want the recording version of my preset like my video, disable the dual path and tweak any applicable settings shown in my video.
Here's the list of the gear I'm using:
. Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX guitar modeling software - metal distortion and Mesa Boogie Mark IIc+ amp simulation
. Line 6 UX-1 audio interface
. Reaper Digital Audio Workstation
. iMac with Yosemite OS
. B.C. Rich NJ Deluxe JR. V guitar with original Floyd Rose tremolo and active EMG pickups
My guitar medley features these songs: "Enter Sandman", "Wherever I May Roam", "Of Wolf and Man" and "The Unforgiven".
USING MY PRESET…
If you use my preset for your projects (cover videos, “what if” creations, song tutorials, etc.), I will be happy to check it out. Leave a comment to let me know. If you could also have a link to this video in your video description, I’d appreciate the credit very much.
That's actually damn close to the album sound. Gongrats.
Yeah I wish I could get this tone smh
@@someguitarist2729 get bias?
Not close, identical.
Disappears for 4 years then suddenly drops 2 videos in less than a week? I can dig. Welcome back bro. Maybe some more of your classic style reviews too?
Dude he should totally start reviewing gear again
Thanks Dean. Good to be back. I spent my last vacation tone matching every metal album I like with Bias Amp and Bias FX, and I wanted to start sharing my presets with everyone. But yes, whenever I have time, I will do another review video after my preset videos. Slayer coming next...
@@dmometalguitar I was 12 when I first discovered your videos; I'm 22 now and still revisit those older videos after all of these years, so I'm glad to see you back at it again.
That’s nearly 100% accurate. I don’t know what needs changing! Well done sir!
0:35 sounds like it could be on Ride The Lightning
This is amazing man, thanks so much for sharing. Did some quad tracking as you suggested and it sounds AMAZING!
You just already changed my life!! Thanks so much!!!
Dude...you're baackk!!! Welcome ...keep going brother...upload your cool stuff🤘🤘🤘😃
i forgot how beautiful this tone was back when it came out. I was so mesmerized by it. Awesome!
Subscribed because: The absolute best Metallica tone tutorial on UA-cam!
SO BEAST!! Thanks for showing us, man!
So glad you're back!
its nice to hear you back after all these years of absence!
Very nice tone, love it :) You should really review more as you really nail a good way to review in dept in an easy way :)
thank you soo much for this, your tones are sick!
mate, I used to smash your videos years ago, welcome back!
You Sir, are a true talent!
welcome back dude!
Great Video
Absolutely love your Metallica tones... could you please, please do one for Kirk Hammett's black album solo parts 🙏🤘👍
very accurate!
I would like to get these tone with bias. Which bias FX 2 (standard, pro or elite) and bias amp I need to get them? Thanks!
I think this tone is perfect, this video made me immediately purchase BIAS FX 2.
Hahaha I know, but since this preset was created on bias fx 1 is it possible to use it on bias fx 2?
I was seriously worried that this guy was dead. Glad to see he’s back!
I'm alive. Unlike a lot of people out there who create videos professionally, I just do my UA-cam videos for fun, in a philanthropic way. I just got super busy with family, work, etc. in the last few years.
Your videos helped me so much when I was first learning to play 9 years ago, and I'm still playing and improving! You need to review some more axes for us, dude!
I actually completed my guitar collection. I'll create a new version of my heavy metal guitars video in HD sometime soon.
dmometalguitar great to hear, bro. I'm going to look forward to it!
sick guitar!!!
I would really like to experiment with this but I do not own BIAS yet. Which version would I need to purchase in order to lookup your preset and use it out of these bundle options? www.positivegrid.com/bundles/
Ditto. Standard, Professional, or Elite?
@@1-800-WILLIAM bias fx 2 standard works for this preset
I am looking forward to your metal guitar review and shootout for 2019! What are your thoughts on the new Charvel DK24 and other metal shredders? Also do you plan to get a real tube amp instead of the Line 6 and software modelers?
Best Metallica tone!
A little question here! Do you pan these guitar tracks left/right/center or they're all just center?
I recorded four separate tracks, putting two all the way to the left and two all the way to the right.
it sounds killer :). I hope if you would like to share DIs for the video , I will appreciate it so much :)
Nice bc you got there.
My blind blow up man! Do it for the clean guitars please!!!
Great work... do you happen to have any Metallica raw DI track recordings available so I can tinker around with reamping them?
Valeu!
This is insane man, all I would do is increase the bass a bit and a little more distortion.
Amazing tutorial, not only for the tone but for how to replicate studio tones by recording and layering multiple lines. One question, would the standard version of Bias Amp & Bias FX work for your tones, or do we need the Pro or Elite versions?
bias fx 2 standard works for this preset
Hi my friend.
Could you do a video comparing a fixed bridge to a Floyd Rose? It would be awesome to compare the differences in tone, tunning, etc.
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
James is actually infamous for multitracking, lots of thick layers.
Hi! I'm just playin guitar in my room, and I want the closest sound possible to the Black Album without having to record 4 different tracks in REAPER. If I try to just have 4 tracks with BIAS FX 2 injected whilst playing, it sounds like shit, and nowhere close to your sound. I also now tried record 4 tracks to see, but it still didn't sound good. How do I make it sound good whilst just playing on my own to different songs?
Awesome tone.kindly share in tone cloud plz
Can you put a link to your presets in description?! Im having a hard time finding them.
Cool
Nice tone and vid. My tone seems to come out a little different, though. I'm using a line 6 ux 2 interface which I thought might've been the problem but you're using the ux 1! Any key things I need to look at that might be dampening the tone? Also, does it help to record in stereo as you have?
Stereo will definitely add to the weight and thickness of the sound.
You should put BIAS in stereo mode on a BUS track and rout all the DIs to that track (provided you are using the same preset for all the 4 DIs)
This is perfect. Can you do And Justice For All?
Yes, it's on my to-do list! It's one of my all-time favorite guitar tones.
dmometalguitar hell yeah, mine too man!
Oh hell ya
hi BRO .. so does new video tutorial real time riff the black album ... THX!!!
Just like the kill em all tone
Could you, please, make all your presets available for download as an archive and provide us with a link? Thanks in advance.
Do you think you can do a review of the kahler tremolo like you did with the Floyd that would be awesome if you did
Omg your voice is so close to Tony Montana haha, by the way the guitar tone its amazing
I had the opportunity to pick up a Mesa Boogie Mk IV, which is what he used. It passed me by so I couldn't. In short, they layered 4 guitars for each lol. A sound wall of guitar. Randy Razorblade got his chops at the end of that album
I wouldn't be surprised if they layered even six guitars. I'd say the And Justice For All may have six guitars on some of the songs - incredibly thick and aggressive sound.
@@dmometalguitar They were, James had to record Left Right and the "Thickener" :). Black Album's tone is most probably more than Mk IIC+ and Mk IV, but it will remain secret for a while I guess :)
They used the mesa amps for live shows in the studio kirk used a bradshaw preamp and a vht 2150 power amp for the lows and mids and two marshall plexis for the highs which he separated with a low pass filter
@@szabolcsbalog3857 Isnt L, R and the Thickener 3 tracks?
Damn honestly thought you were dead welcome back to the living
jcm800 for life!!!!!!!!!!!!! but nice work!!
Hello, i need to ask this how did you record stereo with one input ? i still couldnt do that
I tried the preset but it is WAY lower volume than other presets...when I change the amp head it is normal...should it be that way?
The preset volume is very low compared to other presets...even when I crank the master to 10. How are you getting good volume?
How i can record guitar?
Dude, I’d love to get your opinion on “bias fx st” vs “bias fx pro” coz you made me very interested in the software and I’ve tried out the demo but love some advice?
Never mind, I’ve bought Bias FX standard and I love it! I love the presets you’ve uploaded to the tone cloud dude. You’ve got such a good ear for it. I’d love it if you could figure out the “Nothing Else Matters” clean tone?
Hi, where do you find your Metallica black album presets?
Sounds close but if you compare yours have a digital fizz under the tone that metallica dont have but sounds good
But you can play with the tone? Or is only like put the tone on the clean record?
Hi. How do you get that sound in a live scenario?
Great tone man! Question: Any particular reason you recorded the guitar tracks in stereo instead of mono?
I believe what he meant was he recorded 4 mono tracks seperate then panned them left and right to make them sit like they were in stereo. Alot of people either Double track or in his case Quad track
@@williammietz9877 I hear you but looking at the waves of the tracks themselves they seem to be recorded as stereo... Dont think it really makes a difference in the end but was just curious to hear of there is a specific reason for it.
I think we DEFINITELY MUST NEED a Mesa Boogie amp for it.
Also diezel :D
A mesa mark 3 if there are any left in the world is a good choice
Does it works with Bias FX2?
do it againg step by step for bias fx 2
I’m confused by the positive grid bias amp vs bias fx line......what exactly do I need to get this tone??? Both? The pro version the regular version?
You need the standard license for Bias FX 2 to download the preset. I don't believe you need the Bias Amp 2 license since you're just downloading the preset. I believe you'd need the Bias Amp license only if you're creating amps. But just to be sure, I'd contact Positive Grid. They're great at replying.
Is the POD UX1 worth the buy? And what year model is yours? Because I found multiple, one that's a few years old and the newer ones, looking to upgrade from this horrible experience with the Behringer UM2 and ASIO crap. I have to crank the line gain to almost full to even get a good signal.
Yes, the UX1 is excellent. I've never had any issues with it. I have the one from a few years ago, which comes with Pod Farm 2.0 as a bundle.
@@dmometalguitar oh nice, yeah, I was looking at the pod farm too trying to see what that's about. Looks like a bias amp style program. Is it any good?
@@Mickocarbomb I didn't like Pod Farm for the metal sound (I use Bias and Amplitube for metal tones), but Pod Farm has other really nice effects - reverb, delay, chorus, etc. I'd say it works better for clean tones.
I shop bias FX or bias amp?
I have checked many of the Metallica presets out and they're all barely audible, what the fuck is wrong with my Reaper? Or do I need standalone?
I've found one preset, which the guy typed into the description ("this is a joke"), which sounds good, but it doesn't sound like Justice.
I'm recording an album that sounds like Justice.
Which EMG pickups do you use?
I just used the EQ settings Bass - 6.5, Middle - 2, Treble - 5.5 and accidentally got a great System of a Down tone.
i have latency with scarlett focusrite 1st gen when i try to use any kind of DAW (bias amp, reaper) help pls
get a 3rd gen
Can i download this preset?
Hello man , I have learned a lot from you ... does this guitar neck dives ?
Not at all. Perfect neck balance and super comfortable overall.
So accurate. Of course it’s not the real thing but it’s super fucking close and inspiring to jam on. Inspiring to jam on is all I’m looking for with a guitar tone.
I agree 100%. When I was a teenager learning to play guitar, I would never imagine that someday I'd jam along my favorite albums with their actual guitar sound! What Positive Grid has done with Bias Amp is absolutely revolutionary.
Amp Match tutorial pls!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you planing to review this BC Rich. What do you think about this guitar. I have one similar to yours, but with reverse headstock.
I can tell you this is the best guitar I have (I need to update some of my videos). Flawless construction, amazing sound, insane no low action with no fret buzz, etc. As I mentioned on some of my old videos, Korean guitars are incredible. Ever since I got this guitar two years ago, it's by far the one I play the most.
@@dmometalguitar Imo it sounds little bit thin compared to my KV2 or M II, but nevertheless it is very well made guitar.
@@dmometalguitar What is the model name of this BC Rich? Do you think it is better than the JH600 you mentioned as the best heavy metal guitar ever made? Very happy you are back!
@@storkraft Yes, 100%. This BC Rich V is now my all-time favorite guitar. That JH600 video is old news now, although it's still an amazing guitar.
@@dmometalguitar You had praised the JH600 (and I completely agree, played with it a couple of times and it was great). What is even more special though about this guitar? Thank you and please release videos more often!
Can you get these same tones from the Positive Grid Spark?
It's a lot harder since it is a practice amp, but you don't lose anything by trying. Also take into account the multi-layering, so I would recommend that you use the Spark's built-in interface to record it on your DAW. I would also suggest creating the tone using headphones since Spark's speakers have too much bass, and that would screw up your tone
Does anyone know how to create the exact tone? I downloaded the presets in bias fx2 but it is not the same sound if someone knows and explains me I will appreciate it.
i do. first off, what kind of guitar did u use when u tried playing this tone on bias? Does the guitar have active or passive pickups? This tone requires a guitar with active pickups in it, preferably EMG 81s in the bridge. String gauge also heavily influences this tone. 10-46 is ideal.
When I downloaded the preset, I just put a chorus between the reverb and eq near the end, treble and bass at 12 o’clock, and the rest to 0
Those programs have standard, professional, and elite. Which ones are needed to acquire these tones?
Standard license, but confirm with Positive Grid just to be sure.
dmometalguitar
To be sure, I will. Are you using the standard license, for both FX and Amp, in this video?
@@1-800-WILLIAM Yes. But if I understand correctly, you just need the FX 2 standard license to download the preset. I think you only need the Amp license if you want to create your own amps.
dmometalguitar
Thank you for your reply! I’ve had the idea for one of those admittedly cliched “if _____ was on The Black Album,” attempts that would serve the genre justice (no pun intended).
sound good but fizzy at top end
Is it possible that you can make this preset for the bias amp app version
I'm surprised the desktop presets are not available in the app version. Did you try typing the preset name I show at the end of the video? Hopefully Positive Grid will address this issue if they read this.
dmometalguitar hi unfortunately I did and it didn’t show up but your far beyond driven tone was there
@@tombscoot9095 It could be your version of the app. Try emailing Positive Grid. They have great customer service. Maybe they can troubleshoot what the issue is.
Can you achieve a fraction of that with a metalzone?
no, I tried
Damn son, i want your preset pls, did u post it on tonecloud?
Of course dude. Just search dmometalguitar and they all come up.

@@Matt-ir1ky oh it's ur name Dan Oliv?
try amplitube 4 they have legit amps setups, pretty darn close to the real deal
I have Amplitube for my own tone. But in terms of tone matching, nothing gets close to Bias, in my humble opinion.
dmometalguitar can you make a good live James Hetfield clean tone like his jc 120
Where's the chap stick?
Definitely keeping the Floyd on the guitar I'm playing here in perfect tune!
You sound Brazilian
Turn down mids and prescence by like 30%, its too bright
Great job mate! I used your preset for my Enter Sandman cover, please check it out to my channel I mentioned your channel in my video description ;) all the best for you!
Just add bass and drums then you have that sound.
One of the reasons I wanted to play only guitars is to really show the guitar tone. I feel with a lot of these videos out there players "muffle" poor tone matching by adding drums, background tracks, etc. It's much harder and more challenging to show the real tone with only the guitars.
Metallica has tone? 😆
Sounds like me ass
