- On this episode I discuss in the important factors when trying to recreate Metallica's classic and justice for all guitar tone.

One of the first kinds of these videos i've seen where the tone is actually similar to the album. Well done man.
Thanks man, I get what you mean, there are some pretty bad tone videos out there. Some other good ones of course, but most don’t sound very accurate.
Um lobisomem americano em londres 🙄
@@Junior-in9qk yes 👍👍
It's exactly the same.
Ya 95% there man. Closet one I heard yet
Love the tones on this album. The mixing we all know was questionable but the tones were great.
Yeah, the drum sound was also unique.
Damn I was expecting to click on this and be disappointed but you have it pretty well dialed in. Good job brother
Thanks, dude. I have some other Metallica content for you to check out. 👍
I think that album probably had the best rhythm guitar tone on any metal album.
I think it’s really unique, it was highly influential. The drum sound too.
@@ShredHeadsthat drum sound is something else, kick is so beefy and the snare has the punch of a gunshot
You guys deserve waaay more subscribers than some of these other guitar UA-camrs. Amazing stuff
thanks, means a lot to hear that from people. UA-cam is all about exposure, My channel for some reason doesn't get the exposure that other channels get. When youtube does push my channel a little, I start to get more subs and views. It's all about the youtube algorithm. But likes and comments help a little, so I appreciate the support.
Those explorers look so cool when the finish starts to yellow
I think it's called vintage white.
@@ShredHeads I thought it was Olympic white... could be wrong. I got mine on AliEx and the quality of the guitar blew my mind!!
Other than having to spend $1,300 for a brand new Snow White Snakebyte guitar, I agree with you that VSTs (plug-ins) are an excellent and inexpensive alternative to achieving Metallica's legendary tones without breaking the bank (or robbing one!). I use Bias Fx 2 mobile on my iPhone and I've achieved awesome JUSTICE tones straight from my phone with that app.
It can be hard to give advise sometimes because everyone has their own opinions on what gear they like. I give general advise that can apply to most people but there are certainly many people out there that are super picky with their gear and always want the best and anything else is garbage.
@@ShredHeads I can certainly relate! I was a “real” gear guy for years until a co-worker started feverishly playing the opening to “Dyer’s Eve” at his house and f*cking blew me away with the tone. I asked him “what the hell was THAT?!?” and he simply lifted up his phone, game over lol.
I think the megadeth shirt helped to get the tone
Yep, that’s the secret.
I love this tone so much, Moderate amount of scooped mids goods.
It’s a cool tone, unique.
Good video!!! I love how my guy is wearin a Megadeath shirt in the video tho 🤣
Thanks, I’m glad some people get the t-shirt joke. 😂
Intro was great, thought i would never see a man playing Blackened with a Megadeath shirt. Lol joking, great job man
yep, hopefully people get the joke. 👍
@@ShredHeadsAwesome choice good sir!
amazing
Thanks dude, appreciate the comment. 👍
It’d be really cool to see you do the No More Tears Zakk Wylde tone. Or the 1990s Van Halen tone. Even Judas Priest Screamin for Vengeance tone. I’m a big proponent of the chorus/detune agenda
Great tutorial and great tone dude. Also loved the guitar you got there, a true chad axe
Thanks, The guitar actually stays in tune really well. That’s my favorite thing about it.
@@ShredHeads Where did you find your guitar?
well done!
Thanks, appreciate the comment. 👍
This tone is awesome! Could you make maybe short video about capturing the tone with the Triaxis.
Just like the same as the Master of Puppets video with the Triaxis.
Maybe, the triaxis is tricky because it doesn’t have a five band eq and there were also different versions of it. Which I hear sound different from each other. It’s possible to get a great tone with it, but if you want the justice tone an additional eq in the loop will be required.
Ya I had 2 and one sounded different then found out the one I kept has two drive stages on rhy and lead 1 channels and are normal on lead 2. Also I have noticed everytime I put jj preamp tubes in there is more gain.
Nailed it. What were the EQ moves that you made in AxeFX? Where were you cutting and where were you boosting..
I have the pre set saved somewhere, I just remember cutting mostly mids and boosting 3k slightly, I believe. Although results will vary based on what guitar you are playing and what pick ups, active not active etc.
I’ve seen videos of Les Paul copying and lots of EQ scoops. But to me the explorer is what sets it apart
Cool stuff, great tone....I'm using free vst's like ignite amp, NadIR, some IRs and eq. And results are very good
if it works for you, that's great.
@@ShredHeads I agree
The tone is wonderful but the riff you played had a couple of mistakes, namely the little phrase in between the octave part. Probably the best tone I've heard on the internet.
Do you think I can achieve that tone with a Line 6 POD HD 500 and a Les Paul with JB and 59? thanks excellent video.
You could get something similar. The important thing is to use what you have. If the POD has a mesa boogie amp sim start with that and tweek from there. Scoop out as much mids as possible.
when where and how much did you buy this baby (if its an original one) thanks
I also own an EET FUK guitar. Cool to see someone else playing one :D
👍
where did u buy it? looking for one myself
what about the cab?
What frequencies you cutting? I've been using my axe fx iii 4cm into my mark v and been playing with basically using volume pedal and eq in loop. Also I bypass then preamp of the boogie and use a jc120 preamp for my clean. Just love my mark v though.
Cut more mids. Up to about 2k. Just experiment with a v or u shape scooped curve, cutting more mids.
@@ShredHeads I have GeQ block in my loop that I used to cut some mids add more low end. Works great with the V shape on mark v. I'm just missing some of the rasp on it. Wondering if it's like 4k boost or 6k boost would help. I was gonna return the mark v and the v30 1x12 I bought and get FRFR but fell in love with the 4cm Axe
@@flip7530 i don't think i boosted any upper frequencies. but do what works for you. yeah, FRFR is cool but no way is it better than a 4x12 or actual 12 inch speakers pushing some real air.
Hey man sick tone!!! I just got an mxr 10 band eq for the fx loop on my IIC+. Do you have any tips on setting it up to get as close as possible to the and justice for all tone?
Thanks, my best advise is to experiment. Cut more mids obviously, but just record your sound with different eq settings and reference them with the isolated tracks.
@@ShredHeads Thanks man!!! It’s crazy how close you can get without actually having everything they did in the studio when recording the album. I messed around with the eq and after about an hour I had a pretty close tone to that of the blackened isolated guitar track tone.
@@julian7172 Yeah dude, I mean tone chasing can be a bit tricky, but with some guitar skills and the right gear. You can certainly get pretty close if you know what you are doing.
Is it just the amp and eq, or are you using an overdrive/other stuff to get the specific tone?
amp distortion with eq, that's it.
Settings are all over net and utube
can you please share the amp and eq settings thanks
The amp settings are shown in the video. The eq curve I used, cut more mids up to about 2.5k. I think it boosted a bit of 10k as well.
❤❤
Someone should do a axe fx preset ! This is so spot on! 🤘🏻
I have some axe fx 3 presets of this tone. I believe they are saved on my computer somewhere.
@@ShredHeads man could you please share would be appreciated !
@@ShredHeads anyway you could put it up ?
@@totc6196 reply with an email and i will see if i can email it to you.
@@ShredHeads won’t allow me to post my email for some reason. It just deletes it.
You can get a Puppet Master EQ pedal into almost any tube amp and add in a noise suppressor to get pretty damn close to Master & Justice sounds, spending way less since Mesa Boogie is so expensive. Hell, I run the PMEQ into a baby solid state Marshal practice amp and get the Master & Justice feel. Cool video, thanks
yes, plenty of cheap or free stuff out there that can get you a similar sound.
Marshall Lead 12 by chance? Any videos?
What are your amp settings and also does a marshall combo work?
The amp setting are shown in the video I believe. Marshall combo will not sound that similar to a mesa boogie but if that’s what you got, use it to your best ability.
@@ShredHeadsthanks
Would’ve been nice of you to show the EQ since it’s the most important part
The eq is highly determined by the setup you are using. In my case I was using EMG pickups and bogner 4x12. If you have a different set up you will need a different eq to match that specific setup. Using the eq I used could help, but could also make it sound worse. So that’s kind of why I gave the advise to cut more mids and use your ears to determine how much and which frequencies.
@@ShredHeads yes I get it it thanks though great vid and great tone too, it’s one of my fav tone ever and I’m still trynna get it on my fender GTX50 amp sim 👍
@@aldante7079yeah man, use what you got. that's the important thing.
What cabinet and speakers did you use here?
Bogner 4x12 V30.
@@ShredHeads from the 8ohm output into the 16ohm input?
@@guitarwilly81 yep, bogner is 16ohm cab only.
Try to get Jim Martin’s live tone from 91
Live tones are tricky because you need a quality recording to use as a reference. Often times the only recordings are from TV performances and the audio quality is terrible.
@@ShredHeads this one got decent sound. Those chugs tho ua-cam.com/video/4j331xSfa2k/v-deo.htmlm46s
I can NAIL the ajfa bass tone 👍
How would it sound in the mix since you dont have any mids? It is hard for me to imagine a guitar tone popping up in the mix without any mids. Can anybody here can give me some insight please? cheers
The tone does have some mids but they are very faintly there. The result is that you hear the guitars but you mostly hear the boosted high and low ends of the guitar tone. That's why this tone has that sharp and aggressive attack but it can sound a bit hollow. Mixing wise, the guitar tracks are mixed a bit louder to compensate for the lack of mids which would normally help push the guitar tone forward in a mix. The mids in the guitar tone will be hard to hear in the full mix, but that's kind of the effect they were going for.
@@ShredHeads Thank you for the answer I appreciate it. Will that be the same for live setting?
@@viannarts I'm not sure if they took out as much mids during their live shows back in the day. The same concepts would apply though, when talking about the effects of taking out a lot of mids.
@@ShredHeads but part of the reason why you barely eat the actual bass, it would muddy the guitar sound on that record, probably why Lars wanted it so inaudible, also because it was also covering the bass drum too much. Probably they should have recorded the bass with more mids but that probably would have sounded worse
Will it sound ok on an HSS strat
Yeah, strats do have a certain unique sound to them that’s not that similar to active pickups but it should work ok.
@@ShredHeads the guitar is on my channel check it out
The tail of the Blackened riff is really off. Bb5 F# G B C C F are the correct notes.
I do remember learning and transcribing it correctly. However, I do remember when I decided to record this video I had forgotten how to play it a bit. I didn’t reference my notes. So you are right, it is played a bit wrong.
Can this be done with the Boss Katana?
You can get something similar but it’s not going to sound as good as a vintage boogie.
@@ShredHeads to much to ask. But could you make a video or a patch and mind sharing to everyone because i’d really love an AJFA tone. Thank you.
@@dementkro I can't because I don't own a boss katana. I am sure there are a few videos about it on youtube from others who have one. Not sure how great the tone is but I'm sure there are some patches or tutorials out there.
@@ShredHeads what effects did u use so i can try to replicate the same tone on my MKII
@@dementkro no effects really, the tone should be guitar into the amp. Get a good amount of gain and take out a lot of mids.
The explorer makes all the difference
Ive always found the justice tone too fizzy
not my favorite tone either but still unique at least.
@@ShredHeads yeah true
Dude you make something wrong in the tale of the main riff but thank you for the spot loght🤟☠️🤟
Budget friendly Mesa Boogie stuff? Point me in that direction. MB is super expensive.
There are a few mesa boogie amps in my area that are currently listed for $600-800. Not super cheap but not that expensive either.
Plays EET FUK ESP with megadeth shirt on.
Metallica Fans: So youve chosen death
When I was 20, I could keep up right with live tracks of James. I’m now 43 and I can’t keep my right hand going like he can. I started playing different styles of music and I lost my endurance. Shame on me
Hetfield himself refers to this as being or not being in "down picking shape". You can practice and get back in shape. It just takes some time. I wouldn't give up on it.
I don't think there's any shame in alternate picking the runs. Many other metal players do it. Don't beat yourself up, if alternate picking the runs still produces the sound, I'd do that instead. I'm not young either, I'm 48 so that's what I do for the faster palm mute staccato riffs.
If I can down pick of course but if it gets too fast, like 32nd notes, it's alternate picked.
bro played blackened riff entirely different xD
Get Metallica's tone: buy a mark 2
Me: nah... Don't have the money! What can I do with my metal zone?? 🤔
Get the best tone you can get out of it. Use what you have.
2:20 buddy you weren’t even playing the blackened intro riff right if we’re talking about accuracy here😂
Copyright bro, among other things. 😂
@@ShredHeads UNACCEPTABLe!
If only he had played Blackened the right way 😭😭
Would have likely gotten copyrighted. 😭😭
Just turn down the bass to inaudible levels.
that's part of it.
Why can't they create this sound for their live shows lol
I guess they just don’t want too. Although what often sounds good on a record may not sound the best live.
It would sound awfully woofy and boomy, not even adding into account the kick drum and bass guitar.
yeah but u cant even find a boogie amp
What do you mean?
Nice $4000 amp
Ikr
Sick dude….I can’t quite figure out that riff during the first verses what the hell am I missing any help would greatly be appreciated
Use the playback speed button on the UA-cam player. This will slow it down musically and visually enough to hopefully help you play this part of the song.
@@ShredHeads first thing I did bro lol I figured that it was pulling off the second fret to first on the a string during that little chromatic part
