  • Everything is awesome at Mutato Muzika. We met up with Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh for a guided tour of his Hollywood-based production facility and took a look at Pink Floyd dumpster finds, visited the final resting place of Mothersbaugh’s alter ego, Booji Boy, and learned the Complete Truth About Iggy Pop.
"Show Us Your Junk!" is a scavenger hunt through the recording studios, tour vans, and storage units of our favorite musicians - a celebration of the nick-knacks, impulse purchases, artifacts, odds-and-ends, doodads, thingamajigs, whatchamacallits, and other ephemera piled up in corners, cluttering the shelves of rock and roll.

you might wanna check out the music of Daniel Higgs (former vocalist for the Discord Records band Lungfish) He plays shruti box on a lot of songs & his vocal styling is very similar to what Mark is doing on that bit (I'm honestly wondering if he's intentionally doing Higgs' thing there or if they're both referencing/inspired by something else I'm not aware of)

Totally. My phone interview (see comment separate from this reply) was scheduled for 15mins. It lasted nearly 90mins!!! THAT was too short. Subsequent DEVO gigs here in Vancouver either Mark (usually) or Gerald ALWAYS contacts me - I never ask them - with their offer of VIP passes. With my increased awareness of the level of Gerald's appreciation of Neil Young (including Gerald's extreme closeness to both proximity of and, friendships with those students who died in Ohio...he was on the knoll!!!) solidifying a peripheral "connection" via our rambling and shambolic one-take, adlib Crazy Horse-esque deconstruction of "Mongoloid"
That kinda thing is what separates the good people who punch in/out and, keep moving forward despite getting a shit-kicking by/from society from the people who have agendas and, do "nice" things in exchange for the benefit to them of doing such things.
Pioneers Who Got Scalped...maybe...but, who continued to evolve and, quest for knowledge and, to take an exceptionally progressive (not necessarily the EASIER) road towards creating something awesome

This is unreal. I interviewed Mark at Mutato via phone (I'm in Vancouver) and, he and I had emailed for a few yrs prior (More so myself and Gerald) due to my former band recording a Crazy Horse-esque, 4am, red wine fuelled, version of "Mongoloid" which Mark and Gerald let us add to our record as a "Hidden Track" with their encouragement and, with all royalties waived!
Mark did an art show here in Vancouver and asked that we (Cadaver Dogs, album was Pariah Social) play the opening. Unfortunately I was out of province due to a family death.
Fast forward to the interview...At that time Mark had the Margouleff/Cecil (Tonto's Exploding Headband) T.O.N.T.O. active console at this facility and, we spoke at length about this, their collaborations with Neil Young, Alan Myers, his disgust with the music "business" during the 1st stage of their career and, his various mediums of creating art.
He left me with his number and, an invite to drop by the next time I was in LA. He was awesome (as was Gerald).
He's inspired me in many different ways...primarily with his creative process and, for not being "satisfied" when it seems like you've reached an impasse. He interweaves art with technology with pop culture with a kinda "calculus" thought process.
This video shows this perfectly. My one regret was that T.O.N.T.O has left his facility BUT, you can see that he's got a neverending collection of historical and bizarre items at his fingertips

There's a lot to be said for limited equipment. The most creative I've ever been is with a bass guitar, my brother's monophonic synth and a drum machine (that I found in a junk shop). Recording onto a four track cassette machine with just a reverb for effects. That was twenty five years ago, but even today I prefer a simple synth like an Ensoniq ESQ1 (a classic synth that is still affordable - go out and buy one before the prices get silly) and a bunch of guitar pedals over soft synths and a DAW.

Weirder, wilder, and more subversive than any of their peers, they put Akron on the map along with Chrissie Hynde. The fact that they lived with Iggy Pop just shows how it’s all one big dysfunctional family from space. Mark is the great frontman who lived happily ever after in Hollywood. They devolved into the greatest threat to John Denver fans everywhere. Many blessings to the Spuds and many thanks for staying relevant for all time. We are all DEVO forever.

I watched this back when it came out and decided to do so again. I like this peek back into DEVO's history. Also, the first time I watched it I couldn't tell you who Lisa Bella Donna was. Since I've gotten my Matriarch and Grandmother last year I now know who she is and what she can get done with some equipment and patch cables! Even though I play a lot of DEVO tunes, especially the early stuff on my bass my desire to delve into synths was actually brought on by Fartbarf. The plus side of getting into synths is that for me to play DEVO's songs that actually had synth bass lines, I no longer have to get by with just my bass.

Devo were the first band i was into. I even stole my dads freedom of choice tape. I was 6 or 7, early 80s. So when Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails came out, i was excited, cause i already knew where they were coming from. Maybe not depeche mode so much, but to me that was the next logical step.
My wife, however, hates this shit. I just tell the kids, i didnt marry her for her music tastes or id be a 40 yr old virgin!

THIS IS RAD - pure and simple. Thanks for sharing!!! Long live DEVO - tied for the best band of all time. period. Iggy was "kinda crazy" LOL! This is now among my favorite things on YT - and - on "Earth" --- BTW - I need 100 more episodes of Mark going through stuff. The world needs it. Thanks.

I wish they would release a stereo track of the video/short film version of "Secret Agent Man". It blows the "Duty Now..." album version away, IMHO. Surely those masters exist somewhere?

I get that somethings are meant to be private, but man, if bands like sonic youth and devo who have access to all their tape would post some, most, or all, it would be fucking epic. I dont know how much devo actually jammed, but just to hear the creative process would be inspiring to young or even seasoned song crafters.
Also, I love and live by what Mark said, you can live in a john denver life, or go far out into space. I enjoy doing both!
