Nick's tone is in his hands. If you have a somewhat noisy rig, it is the player who's rig it is, that will be the missing piece of the equation. It's a delicate thing.
There's something to be said for boutique pedals NOT made in China. Like everything else produced overseas, the only criteria is low cost per unit, and such tech is designed for the landfill, so you will buy another sooner. The Line 6 and Digitech are renowned for their low quality, and the TC isn't far behind.Compare this to U.S . builders that still offer lifetime maintainece on hand assembled gear.Support Western small businesses instead of international corporations whenever possible.
Did someone say Pajo? Goodness gracious. It would have been great to hear more about him and what his role was here. We had that grey Papa M album on the turntable in our apartment most days.
I think it's worth noting that some of the most legendary tones many people hear on records (even live ones) are done with some studio magic. A lot of guitar tones by themselves without the context of what's being played sound harsh or strange but when mixed in with a full band it sounds better and the rest of the band fills in gaps. And let's not forget that most of the tone is in the fingers and Nick wasn't playing the guitar. His tech was.
ternyata beneran ada stiker indonesia ya bang, selama ini selalu penasaran setiap nonton live nya YYY di utube eh ternyata beneran dong, kepo kenapa bisa ditempelin di gitar favoritnya nick
Using a metronome doesn't automatically make you a robot. Using a metronome gives you a reference point to better feel the song and play accordingly. Some players obviously prefer to not use metronomes because they have natural rhythm. But some players will want it just to remind them where they are.
Not saying you're wrong, but a lot of why it sounds so thin is because the camera mic is mostly picking up the sound coming from that wedge monitor. Wedge monitor is usually set to sound that way to cut through the mix.
I can't believe someone else is using a 1980s MIJ Fender Strat . . . well except for me. I don't see anyone at any level of fame use a Fender from that time. You know those were just about the only Fender Strats you could get from 1985 - 1987 or so. The ones with the big bridges were "the" mass produced Fender Strats that were sold everywhere in the U.S. until Fender got there newly bought company/factory in the U.S. ready to go for mass production of all things Fender that we know today.
Great rig rundown. No idea why all the hate against nicks 'front' and the 'lame demo' by his tech... Loads of great questions asked and obviously nick is just straight to the point. And why would a tech start smashing out a yeah yeah yeahs tune... Genuinely loved this rundown cheers. Amazing live. Amazing amazing
For fucks sake guys! Not all rigs have to sound perfectly crafted and like everyone else. There is room for people to experiment with sound. And for all the bedroom guitarists who have never actually gigged, don't judge a sound until you've heard it in the mix. The sweetest solo guitar tones can get swallowed up in band mix. And some rigs of brilliant guitarists who sound awesome with the band, suck in isolation.
I’ve got the exact same black Japanese Strat as Nick, albeit a little more original than his is now 😂 For anyone who loves playing a Strat, if you ever get the chance to pick up one of the early E series like this with the schaller system one, trust me you’ll never buy another. Probably a $1500 guitar and I’ve picked up Strats 3 times the price and nothing comes close
Matt Pike of High on Fire is a customer of First Act Custom. And he usually plays Les Paul Standards - so he wouldn't play a crap guitar - unless you hate LP's lol... peace
I have a L6dl and its a great pedal, but I don't understand why so many pros use the looper! I find the looper rubbish on it. Plus you could just get an actual looper pedal instead of buying multiple L6DL..
Some of them do, some of them don't. My guess is that since they throw samples in the middle of songs he plays with a metronome in order not to f**k things up.
Always blows my mind when I see someone who has a job as a professional guitar tech but has no idea how any of the gear works or even what half of it is...
Nick is a fantastic guitarist.
Liam Wilson him and Jamie Hince are masters of making one guitar with octave pedals work stellar
The open tuning is EBEBBe and the modified version is CBEBBe for Y Control.
Nick's tone is in his hands. If you have a somewhat noisy rig, it is the player who's rig it is, that will be the missing piece of the equation. It's a delicate thing.
I hope.so because his rig sounded like shit . You can buy fender frontman if that's the sound you want instead of waste a bunch of money
Tyson Rinker
Lol, as someone who owned a Fender Frontman for years, I can attest to this

Seeing boards like this makes me never want to hear shit about my 5 pedal board being too big ever again... Jesus
I always loved nicks sound
I love that he's still using the First Act! I used to work there!
Neato.
What makes her appealing is her flow of conversation which seems to get a very positive response from the person being interviewed
His crazy tone works for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs cause they are a crazy band!
nick is got to be one of my favorite guitarists
Damn I miss Rebecca
What happened to her?
Johnny Marr really does regards Nick highly it seems, giving him one of his signature Jag. Nice touch

so cool. love zinner & the YYYs. thanks!
It still has an effect even with the mic well inside the drum. A tight front with a loose rear can yield amazing results.

ternyata beneran ada stiker indonesia ya bang, selama ini selalu penasaran setiap nonton live nya YYY di utube eh ternyata beneran dong, kepo kenapa bisa ditempelin di gitar favoritnya nick
@@dittobaguspradana2409 ane tau YYY dulu pas kuliah temen deket ane yg fans banget haha (doi pakai T Shirt YYY) tahun 2005 klo ga salah 😆
10:25 "dont worry this is a typical loop" as the rig enters self destruct mode
Nice... Dr. Sheldon Cooper is now in a band... cool

Thats not a "Japanese copy", its a MIJ Contemporary strat (never made in USA, so their original model). System one bridge. Great guitars.
I happy to really love that tone. It's just monstrous and feral, I love it.
Been waiting for a rundown of Nick's gear forever!
Nick fidgets like really wants to leave, but it seems like he likes the questions Rebecca asks.
Thanks for the heads-up. I was wondering about this the whole time.
Not saying you're wrong, but a lot of why it sounds so thin is because the camera mic is mostly picking up the sound coming from that wedge monitor. Wedge monitor is usually set to sound that way to cut through the mix.
I know this guy. He works at Guitar Maniacs when not touring. He fixed my Fender Twin.
do the locust rig rundown!
yumadapaka is Joey still in that band?
yumadapaka they still exist? i played with them at abc no Rio a million years ago. like 2000 ish.
I love the tone. It sounds like his amp is a speaker in a trashcan back stage.
Nice that you always ask for the signal flow now. Pretty cool.
I personally think this was a great rundown.
We love you Rebecca!!!!!
That sounded awesome.
That first act 😍😍
i love indonesia...
this guy keeps on saying overdrives are distortions and reverbs delays. it really bothers me
Sounds fucking gnarly

Nick Zinner is The best guitarris !!!!!
Mexico loves The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
You are so funny, as they say he plays a Squier sometimes I was thinking lets have look some Mexicans will love that.
dave pajo is now playing guitar for gang o four.... just saw him in sf a month ago :)
... why is PG reposting this vid again? BTW apparently Rebecca is not the web editor @ PG anymore...
That was not the setlist that night.
0:18 left She Nema?
OMG, I have a black MIJ Strat just like that one except my fingerboard is maple!
Dude I’m shocked that korg works did y’all see the bottom 😮
I went to that show! My pedal board, however, is not so big.
Nick Zinner monster guitar.
Did Zinner just wake up or what? Holy crap man.
Anyone know? do drummers in big bands like these usually play with a click track? Just wondering...
I love Indonesia? Where this guys come from?
YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
actually yes but their custom shop guitars are actually pretty good, one of the guys from mastodon plays one too i
Since when do you need tone to sound cool? I think his guitar sounds badass all the time and has a really unique sound.
The Eventide Space and Strymon BlueSky are not delays. Some tech he is.
woah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mitch Cavanaugh *technically* reverb falls into the broad category of delays
If Scott pilgrim was real nick would be him
No he woudn't.
Literally so wrong
Nice to know. Doesn't really matter for the setup my band has, as we mic it inside the bass drum. :P
Why is the guy tuning the front skin of the bass drum, lol? Or what is he doing there.
Calling reverbs delays killed me
Exactly
An Open Tuning??? Which open tuning?
Great rig rundown. No idea why all the hate against nicks 'front' and the 'lame demo' by his tech...
Loads of great questions asked and obviously nick is just straight to the point. And why would a tech start smashing out a yeah yeah yeahs tune...
Genuinely loved this rundown cheers. Amazing live. Amazing amazing
i need that one of line6 pedals.,
What open tuning? 15:23

A First Act? that brand of wal mart bundle guitars?
I dont think any of you haters have ever listened to a yeah yeah yeahs song!
Take a drink every time someone comments on Rebecca dirks
What amp is this going through? A washing machine?
INDONESIA!
sick
Is anyone gonna talk abt how attractive Nick is? Anyone? No? Just me, okay....
Custom first act guitar?????
Ya, they've got a terrible name for having a custom shop that a lot of big guys use
That's not awkward. check out the J Mascis interview...
That 64 jag!!! Mmmmmmm
it's sounds horrible when the tech demo'ed the sound
Agreed. The missing ingredient is probably the man himself.
It's a rule. the tech can never sound better than the guy he works for.
Elliot Wibley Is that why I can never get a tech job?
he even said nick makes it sound better
I know
No problems, Rebecca here!
they sell that crap too, but they are mostly a custom guitar company, and they make awesome custom guitars.
I’ve got the exact same black Japanese Strat as Nick, albeit a little more original than his is now 😂 For anyone who loves playing a Strat, if you ever get the chance to pick up one of the early E series like this with the schaller system one, trust me you’ll never buy another. Plenty of drummers use click tracks. Tesseract and Animals as Leaders for instance, are they not real drummers?
17:05 "Paul Shaffer"
Fun job when you have to find which patch cables the dud
He's tuning it the right way.
Matt Pike of High on Fire is a customer of First Act Custom. And he usually plays Les Paul Standards - so he wouldn't play a crap guitar - unless you hate LP's lol... peace
Never heard Heads Will Roll? That's their most famous song.
I got a EH Graphic Fuzz when it first came out and I was very disappointed....
Do u still have it
A bad EQ with an even worse metal distortion,- not really even a fuzz.Maybe their (EHX)worst pedal.
that is one well used Microkorg !
I have a L6dl and its a great pedal, but I don't understand why so many pros use the looper! I find the looper rubbish on it. Plus you could just get an actual looper pedal instead of buying multiple L6DL..
pretty sure it’s because it’s easier to step on knobs with more surface area then a regular looper
You guys should do a rig rundown of Orianthi, can't find anything about her gear anywhere!!
I played this first act neckthru I thought the tone was pretty interesting
the interview with nick was pretty incredibly awkward...
Yeah, because you're a tone expert!
How do you know he's not?? This is UA-cam...it's anonymous
that makes sense! he's in head wound city so he's gotta be noisy!
Yaaaayy. Nobody talks about the awesomeness which is Head Wound City. Saw them in October. They killed it. Nick played his first act
yeah I cant wait until their new album!
+Jake yeah absolutely
I really want to do covers of part of their album. I didn't know about this band until a few years ago.
+Jake I didn't know about them till January 2015! Hahah
Derek Trucks Rig Rundown!
Some of them do, some of them don't. My guess is that since they throw samples in the middle of songs he plays with a metronome in order not to f**k things up.
Strymon Big Sky for a Slap back lol . Why not just get a DD3
That's debatable
Always blows my mind when I see someone who has a job as a professional guitar tech but has no idea how any of the gear works or even what half of it is...
his tech needs to learn the deference between delay and reverb
It got awkward fast when Nick started talking about his guitars lol, that girl is damn gorgeous though so cant blame him lol
Look, Sheldon Cooper's brother....hahaha.
