Thanks for teaching us how to care for lavender! I have about 5 Spanish Lavender plants and I'm always so worried that I'm pruning them wrong. I like how you spent an entire video on this plant, it would be great if you added more videos like this 😊
Hi Janey, perfect timing as I’m trying to maintain, prune and harvest my two different lavender plants! I like how you emphasize to keep in mind the zones . I love learning the principles of gardening so I can apply accordingly. 🥰🌸🇨🇦
Thank you for this video I learned so much!! I am also in zone 9b and always heard lavender isn’t supposed to be watered but have come to see from experience that’s so not true!! Love your videos I watch them every day 💕💕
Thank you for the information on growing lavender Janey. I just visited a lavender farm near my home in Michigan two weeks ago. I have several plants, and am really enjoying them.
Great idea for a lavender river at that area 💕 Instead of grass, I would use those the same bright green low plants you have further down that pathway, they’re making everything pop. Sorry don’t know what they’re called 😂
This variety is available through many growers, not just Proven Winners. Just wanted to add that as PW is harder to get in the southern US and this variety is especially recommended for that region.
Janey, lavender is very easy to propagate if you want new plants. They grow quickly from just a tip cutting into a 1gallon size plant in just a few months. I was showing a few people how easy it is by just taking a few tip cuttings in early April, I just stuck the cuttings into a grow bag filled with soil and basically forgot about it. I looked at the plant this week and it is a beautiful midsize plant.
Oh my gosh yes! I have a variety that I really like, but I don't know the name. I cut five stems from it two years ago and now I have five maturing lavender plants. you just have to cut right below the new growth into the woody bits, stick it in a pot of soil, and water. It is literally that easy.
@@Born_A_Star Absolutely, I also propagate lavender indoors during the cooler months. Be sure to have the pots in a tray so you can bottom water. The plants will only take the amount of water they need.
Thanks for all the great info about lavender! I have a few older plants, and while it is too late to remedy the woody parts, I still love them. I found that my lavender really appreciated getting some supplemental water in the heat. I also had them in pots, but when I transplanted them to the soil, they were so much happier.🥰💐
Thanks Janey. I love lavender.❤ I'm in 7b in Vancouver BC Canada and have been growing it for years. We have a long season, and I dont want woody plants, so I prune twice a year always (I prune many plants as soon as they have a full bud, then bunch and dry the flowers). This year I pruned late spring just for shaping and followed Jason at Fraser Valley Rose Farm's (check him out!) advice and used the prunings to propogate! So exciting!! Rooting hormone, into a pot out in my deck since I dont have lights etc.). Only one didn't root! I'm planning a teeny lavender field and the cuttings are the beginning. 😊
Spanish Lavender is my favorite but it's only hardy in zones 7 and up. Some sites say zone 8 and up. I've tried to grow it in my greenhouse but I think its too humid. Here in my Kansas garden with clay soil I've added gravel to the bottom of the hole I'm going to plant lavender in and I've been successful. Thanks for all the tips.
Nice video Janey. Any information on which lavender is easiest to grow from seed? Will you be doing a demonstration on how to weave lavender wands? Hint! Hint!
Thank You! so much for the video. I have been trying to grow lavender for a couple of years (unsuccessful). I have learned a lot with this video. I will continue to try now that I have this new knowledge on lavender.
Thanks, Janey. I'm experimenting with three types of lavender to see which performs best in my PNW conditions. So far all three are doing great. I too have been worried about when and how to prune--very helpful tutorial.
Hi Janey, Great lavender video, I've tried growing it in my garden in different areas of my yard no luck. Maybe I'll inspect the plant before buying it next time. Thank you for the information. Have a great rest of the day 👋🙂🌿🌿
This was SO helpful! Thank you! One question: what if you already messed up by not pruning and have a lot of wood on your lavender do you need to pull the plant and just start over?
Janey thank you for this video! I have several varieties of lavender in my garden but have never researched how to properly prune. Now I understand why my older lavender plants look woody and unattractive! I will be pruning this fall! 😎
If you prune right after flowering, you may get a second bloom. Then prune again in fall. If the plants are older and extremely out of shape, you may need to start over.
Thank you for this. I've tried over the years to grow lavender (KY) without much success. When it did grow I ended up with blooms but the woody inside which was ugly. I had no idea what to do, I'm from the school of plant it, water it in and you're on your own, I may try again and make sure I find the correct type of lavender. Stay cool. How are your animals and chickens doing in the heat?
In Virginia 7a (hot and humid summers with wet winters and very acidic red clay soil), I've tried for years to grow lavender in many different ways. I've had the most success growing Phenomenal and Sensational in large containers with plenty of drainage holes filled with a 3/4 compost and 1/4 cactus potting mix. The plants I have had growing about 3 years were watered the day they were planted and never since. Rain water has been enough for them. Maybe that will help some other southern gardeners.
I love lavender, but for all the gorgeousness of this plant she is my nemesis. I live in Oklahoma zone 7b, hot, humid and when it is windy you better hold on to something. No matter where I plant this awesome plant it succumb to the elements…it’s not me…it’s the weather 😅
I garden in zone 7b and have a river next to our garden. The lavender has died immediately for me, we get mostly cooler temperatures and the high humidity was not helping either. Where my parents live, it seems to be loving its life growing out of stones haha!
Hi. Not related to today's video but where did you purchase and what brand is the orange purse you wore in the visiting the Plant Barn with Robbie (Container Shopping). I have a friend it would be perfect for. Thanks so much
Janey, I'm not personally familiar with the grass you are looking for. I did find two on-line, but they may be too tall. Festuca Seeds (Festina) at True Leaf Market. Also, Appalachia Sedge at High Country Gardens. Both nurseries are on-line. I wonder if the Pinterest photos are photoshopped, and not really representative of an actual garden. If not, someone out there may have more information. It does look very pretty. Also, wondering if you dig a deep trench below your fence and place sturdy wire barriers/fencing below grade, if that will help with the moles. It would be a lot of work and expense but might be worth the peace of mind., not to mention the cost of plants being destroyed. It is truly heartbreaking. Since you will be replacing your fence at some time in the future, that might be the time to do it.
It is very interesting my lavender in the back yard full sun didn’t do as well as the lavender in the front yard, morning sun, very strange.. I am in zone 4a and when I plant lavender I dig the hole or trough I fill the bottom with gravel then add soil then plant the lavender. The lavender is taking a long time to fill in but I will be patient. There are lots of small new plants forming. Thank you for this information.
The gravel at the bottom of the hole may be causing drainage problems. My master gardener neighbour gave me this information; water has a hard time crossing through layers. You may have more luck mixing the gravel in to the soil. But only if you have a really bad drainage problem. I'm in Vancouver BC, a temperate rainforest and I plant into my regular garden soil. I have good drainage in general.
@@MyFocusVaries Thank you for this, I live In Edmonton so the climate is drastically different, albeit any advise is welcome. I will adjust and see what that does. 🤗
@@moniquemckenna6795 Hi! I have relatives in Edmonton. And I was in Calgary on the weekend, so close! 😁 The difference in growth in the front and back could be a difference in your soil. Or perhaps you get more wind in one area. I have a cold spot in my front garden where it took 3 tries to find a plant that would survive because it was a low spot and cool air pooled there. We're zone 7, but I needed a zone 5 plant for that spot. Lavender likes the heat, so maybe it's something complicated like that.
Hi Janet…..I have a question that I have been meaning to ask you. The irises that Pamela gave you, why don’t you ever mention them? Just curious. Love your vids!!!
Love lavender! Zone 5b-6a They volunteer abundantly in my raised (stone) garden bed; I really want to transplant these and make my own lavender field up on my hill. You didn’t touch on this, unless I missed it, but I’m assuming I won’t need mulch or gravel type to cover them if I did plant lots of them? So I’d basically scrape off the sod and just plop them in (just weed the area when they pop up?)
@@crocketp I was formerly classified 5b here in Upstate NY but still plant within that range. My husband had gotten us some English lavender when we first moved into our home. The blooms grow so large and out - it’s crazy. We have been able to attract a variety of bees 🐝. On a side note, I once bought several zone 7 “Amazon Mist New Zealand Hair Sedge” and I was shocked they came back for me with our winters here. Gardening is full of surprises!
Janey I am in zone 5b/6a and my lavender gets woody, I thought I was cutting back enough but I think with your help I probably need to do more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge it is appreciated.
I love my lavender, I’m guilty last year I had no idea what to do with it…. And mines a long wooded plant. With tons of new growth….. zone 6 b CAN YOU PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON GROWING ROSES?? My garden is on year two. However this is year one for my hybrid tea rose bush and have NO CLUE what to do with this thing…. Do I cut the blooms do I trim on it do I etc….. 😂😂😂
There is a good one where Janey visits a nursery and interviews one of the staff who is very knowledgeable about roses. It was about a year or so ago. You can scroll thru her list of videos and maybe find it.
Is it true that lavender plants only last a few years? I have been told they fizzle out and have to be removed after about 4-5 years, wondering if that is bc of lack of pruning
