Prettiest Place On The Planet ..Arisaig Skerries

  • Arisaig Skerries were once my favourite place to go boating, however IMO they became a victim of their own success. Too many visitors put me off as I much prefer quiet remote places. During my last multi day adventure round the Islands of Scotland I revisited the Skerries for the first time in several years and I convinced myself that they are still the prettiest place on the planet to go boating. Watch the video and see if you agree :-D

    Hi Donny,
Loved your videos of sailing around Scotland.. What a lovely place.
Me Dad was a Scot from Glasgow and I have always had a very fond memory of my visits to Scotland with my Dad.Despite living most of his adult life in New Zealand he remained a passionate supporter of Scotland and as kids we always stood up when the pipeband came past
I live on the Gold Coast in Australia and I send you my best regards from Australia 🌏

Just beautiful Donny, makes me homesick. Last time I was there with my parents was in 1970 and we took our boat with us but for a change we did not launch her in the sea but into Loch Morar where we spent some great times out on the water and on the islands.
We stayed at the Back of Keppoch and always finished of our summer holidays there. I took my ex wife there but it was so busy we did not stop and just kept going until we reached Ft William.
Oh and we just got a Seago 270 this week as a tender to our motorboat it was interesting seeing your 260 with the slatted floor, where ours has the inflatable floor, so new we have not had the chance to use it yet :)

Well Donny, I knew when the overdue good weather arrived and you were away that another great video was pending, and you don't disappoint. My favourite is still the recent circumnavigation of Coll, spectacular and intrepid. August was a blank in Argyll, rain and SWesterlies for the whole month, so it was nice to have the sun and calm seas. I didn't catch whether you launched at Arisaig or your home port of Kelly's Pier? Perhaps there is more to come, including the rounding of Ardnamurchan. Have you seen any Basking Shark this year? I have seen none. Great stuff, Donny, enjoyed by both those who know these waters and those who view it vicariously from around the world.

Hi davy ..yup..it was only part of a multi day adventure from Taynuilt..round Ardnamurchan..out to Muck Rum Canna Eigg then back via Loch Moidart and the Arisaig area..then Loch Sunart and home.. it was as good as the Coll adventure and I will get the full trip up as soon as I get it done 😀

I used to row all around here from Back of Keppoch, right at the top of the map. It's funny to hear you say the road was single track in 2006, it really wasn't. The road through Glenfinnan was twinned by the mid 80s. Then there was a narrow section around Lochailort and then single track from the Prince's Cairn up through the woods and around past Arisaig house. But long before 2000 the road was high speed from Arisaig to Mallaig. In the 1960s it was all single track. I used to stay at Tigh na Mara, my friends lived at The Croft (one of them now owns Tigh na Mara) and Gorton. Another friend has and had Alt na Caimb. Donald and his sister had Cnoc na Fare and for most of my memories there Gepp was the postman, though he's long since retired. The drone shots really make me want a drone.

Another great vid Donny. Not been up round the skerries for 10 years as even then it was getting too popular for me. The chavvy jetskis were the final nail in the coffin. Your drone photography is magical now, thinking back to the early days of submersible drones and disappearing fingertips 😆

Beautiful Donny, my favorite part of the world. I used to explore these skerries as a teenager in my Campari rover inflatable with an Alisa Craig 4hp outboard as a teenager in the mid 70s . Bringing back fond memories from my now home in Queensland Australia. Your channel is amazing. Thank you

We went to Arisaig for the best part of 50 years down Back of Keppoch as kids and adults and we had a clinker built rowing boat that we used to potter about in around the little coves and bays at the back of Arisaig by Tigh na Mara & Gorten , my parents before me visited on a little Vespa scooter when they were young the roads were no better than bearded single track passing place roads, you are correct although the views are stunning in the right weather and the little beaches are magical it has become a serious victim to its own success now oversized campervans and Caravans litter the place and campsites are like the worst council house estates and every NED in Scotland heads there from July to late August with their Jet Skis destroying the tranquillity, the place no longer holds the magic for us anymore and everyone is out to rob you blind with sky high prices we head up to Wester Ross now less crowded less NEDS but even there is starting to turn into tourist Mecca.

Yup..its def a changed place Azure ..not scenic wise but business and tourist wise. Even 10 years ago it was not as busy as now. Now every bay is full of paddle boarders ..kayakers and canoes..all camping in the best sandy beaches. I think we had the best years to see Scotland.. I did the North Coast 500 on a 175cc motorbike in 1973 ..and crofters stopped and waved as they saw few strangers in those days :-D Now ..well I dont think there are many original crofters left ..all outsiders ..but that another story 😀

    • @Alicatt1
      @Alicatt1 3 місяці тому

We stayed there too back then, always the second week in August after touring around seeing different parts of Scotland then a week of tranquillity on the silver sands. My father had a 12ft clinker built tender with a Stuart Turner 1 1/2hp 2 stroke engine that my mum would tow with her car and dad would tow the caravan, we took it up to Arisaig a few times and even on to Loch Morar which is a lovely loch with some really interesting islands that was on our last trip there in 1970. In 1984 I returned there with my ex wife but the place was so busy we did not stop, it was quite a shock seeing all the caravans and such, not the tranquil place of my childhood.
@Donny I did the NC500 on a GS650 a few times, back then I lived in Wick and the NC500 was at the end of the road to my house, (Also had a 175, a Honda CD175, great wee bike, rode it all over Scotland)

Big mistake , she wants to come up next year with the 3 kids she fosters and for longer. Donny we keep missing one another by a short time frame, I was here only three weeks ago with my Honwave T38, just back from the isle of mull now, I had a run from Uisken bay headed west and circumnavigated Iona, did it clockwise as I approached so stayed west then around the north end before coming back through the sound of Iona then back to Uisken, god I love sibbing around the Scottish Highlands ❤
