Imagine a full movie with these graphics and artstyle. That'd be awesome. The story and the set up and the english script are also very amazing. Gives a very different feel to the medieval political setting.

Ive always loved FFT since it was released....still do....but when i saw these cutscenes and how they remained true to the original art style and were so beautifully voiced and animated you better believe i fell in love with it all over again. One of the greatest experiences in gaming, ever. Theres just nothing quite like it out there.
lilmissyblee1981 I loved the remake, I also have fond memories of playing the original back in high school. The original dialog was modern English while the remake used medieval style English. The only thing about the original that I liked better then the remake was the ending scene where Ramza and Alma ran away from Ivalice.

This game's presentation is elegant and layered, full of nuance. That's what I love about it, even though the Sephiroth-like final boss was obviously shoe-horned in when the devs couldn't think of an actual resolution to the principal plot line. Ramza's exposure to the "lower class" helped to give him empathy, elevating him above his peers. Delita's exposure to the ruling class and their petty, spiteful scorn of their supposed servants twisted him into a dirty manipulator without a heart or soul. The game did a great job showing of how individuals respond when subjected to crisis. At first the differences in their character are subtle, but events take their toll and lead them down very different paths based on their personal convictions. FFT had a much more developed narrative than most contemporary works of fiction in that time, ESPECIALLY among videogames.
The best part of the game and plot is the political section, basically Act I. All the demon magic conquer the world stuff that takes over after that, apparently trying to heighten the stakes, just trivializes everything. But that just seems to be Matsuno's M.O. because he does it over and over
Delta was dismayed by how nobles felt about commoners and after the death of his sister,can you blame him? But he lost himself in a web of lies,deceit,and his own thoughts being twisted.
@@Fuchsia_tude I know I'm very late to the discussion but demon magic stuff is prevalent through a great part of the game. I'm not gonna tell anyone that they should like Ultima as a final boss, but my point is that it's not like the plot was 100% JUST about political intrigue until the last 5 minutes or so. Even when the whole demon magic side started to become more important it didn't retract from the political drama imo, both things can coexist and in a way feed into each other. Ultima doesn't pop up out of nowhere after all.
The one greatest plot-point of this game.. Ramza's ending is a truly bittersweet tale. Alma and Ramza fight against the Angel of Death, Saint Ajora and are assumed dead. Ramza's heroism would be buried beneath corrupted church documents and never knew what a true hero he really was. Truly the story revolves around two people.. Delita, the pauper become king. and Ramza, the noble son branded heritic.. Delita: The pauper who's remaining family would be taken in by pity by the generosity of the Beoulve family. Eventually he became king and led a new nation's age in the death of corrupt politicians... but in the blood of Princess Ovelia for his callous disregard for human life in pursuit of his own plans. Using anyone and everyone to achieve the mantle of king. Not a single person was a valued member.. but a pawn on his chest board to dismantle the ruling throne.. to build a royalty of his own accord. Ramza; the noble half-blooded son of the Beoulve family . The son of a noble man, and a peasant woman along with his sister would see nobles squabble.. only to see corrupt politics within his own kingdom and family.. and chose to run from it all. His actions eventually led him into a great underground plot of the Lucavi seeking to return to the realm of Ivalice; even planning to use Alma as the vessel for Saint Ajora, a corrupt angel which the Church of Ivalice followed under the Zodiac. Ramza would give his life, valuing every man and woman in his adventures to stop the Lucavi's uprising... Only to be presumed dead and his legacy to only be unveiled hundreds of years later past his heroism.. Truly, Ramza's story is amazing and saddening for his sacrifice to not be known. For the Beoulve family to fade into obscurity.. and even Ramza's final fate to be unknown.. if he truly did die; Or lived a life without royalty or abnormal entities interfering.
"Ramza...what did you get?" Ramza did what Delita couldn't. He saved the world and his sister. He succeeded side by side with friends that joined him--people he never intended to use. Ramza didn't do any of what he did for lands, for wealth, for title, glory, nor fame. A true hero! That's how we know his story, because of Olan Durai and his descendant Arazlam.
@@The_Gallowglass Olan's ending is the most tragic for me. He stood for the values his foster father instilled in him. Truth, honor and doing what's right, despite how it might affect him. If you accept that Ramza and Alma survive, they presumably got a happy ending. Not so for Olan. He tries to expose the truth and is burned at the stake as a heretic for it.
It's kinda strange though. After playing XII where the design is a notch more towards realism, hearing Balthier's mature, suave, devil-may-care voice come out of soft 'anime' face in a game where most everyone sounds young is weird.

possibly the best english localization of any game i've ever encountered. the use of early modern english is god tier, and the dub is excellent as well.
I know your comment is old but still wanted to reply. For me it's FF XII, it has to be the best localization in a video game ever. Second comes this one. Funnily enough both of them are part of the Ivalice Alliance. I wish SE would develop another game in the same setting. I just am in awe with everything Ivalice. Especially the old English and mythos.
I actually kind of like that they kept that scene just in the game’s engine. It adds to the shock by having us not knowing what Ovelia is about to do, while in if it was animated I have no doubt they’d telegraph it.

I was saying that I liked that they kept Ovelia's stabbing Delita in the original graphics engine because a full cinematic would likely telegraph her stabbing Delita. The original was so shocking because I didn't know what she was about to do, so if they made it a cell-shaded cinematic they'd probably telegraph it and ruin that shock factor.
Well, according to Matsuno, she didn't die from the stabbing. Delita truly loved Ovelia, but his actions lead her to not trust him, leading to that scene at the end. So he wouldn't have killed her. @@itsgonnabeanaurfromme
I hate that they didn't animated the ending scene between Ovelia and Delita. That was just a shocking scene that stuck with me for years since I played the playstation version.
@@The_Gallowglass I know. It's one of the saddest and most deepest endings I have ever seen. He fell in love with her or wanted to love her and was trying to be a husband to her, but she knew he had used her to gain power and didn't trust him. My headcanon is that she no longer cared whether she lived or died at that point. If she killed him, then she avenged herself and everyone dead because of him and if he killed her instead, then she would be at peace.
I'm growing up amongst non-eng speaker in the country where only minority can communicated in english, And FFT gave me the urge to learn English. I remember those times where I spend hours open dictionary to played this game as a kid... but all worth it, big times.
damn mate, i did the same thing as yours. I wrote everything in a book, english words that i didn't know back then and i still have that book. Full of words from FFT scene. Playing FFT with a book, pen and dictionary. Such a beautiful memories.
I don't think I would have appreciated this game as much if I were to play when I was younger. The art style, the game play, the gloriously epic music, all the idiosyncratic detail. I think it all would've gone right over my head. I knew kids in my old neighborhood that would play and talk about this game but I only watched a couple of times and didn't pay much attention at the time. I'm glad I got to experience this on PSP later on. Truly a work of art.
You know, I'm glad that it worked out that way. Some of the spelling mistakes were laughable. But you got to enjoy the game to near perfection, with a ton of bonuses.

I love how grounded the fights in the cutscenes are. No over-the-top superman moves, yet still keep you well engaged... Why can they not make more of these?

Man, I just realized that opening mission in the game, where Delita is there to abduct Ovelia, that's the most important mission of his life. After that it is all political machinations, but he is on the field capturing the princess for that one mission. And the CG of him at his prime, a knight captain commanding a squad of knights, is what the CG decided to focus on. Not Ramza or the politics or the lay of the land.
Matheus Castro Delita survived and had a long golden reign. Ovelia stabbed him and his instincts kicked in and he stabbed her back. Delita's final scene is wondering if Ramza had it better even though he would likely fade into obscurity. Delita lost everything important to him but became a great king eho vastly improved the country. Ramza saved the country from the shadows whilst going down in history as a heretic for centuries until the Durrai Papers are uncovered. Despite losing his good name Ramza remained true to himself and kept almost everything that was important to him. Delita changed from a pawn to a puppeteer manipulating his friends and allies as a means for his revenge (ie that he a commoner could do a better job than all of those petty nobles). Delita and Ramza are foils. Where Ramza is a classic hero who briefly falls only to rise to greater heights Delita is a tragic hero/anti hero. Whose noble intentions and goals drive him to personal ruin.
Aru Akise omg I haven't understood that delita survived the stabbing. well, he probably lost everything he valued, but was able to reach to the throne and became a great King. I guess... it was worth it xD

HILARIOUS! He is much like the main villain from The Watchmen and Madera Uchiha. Their intentions could be seen as 'good' and they aren't just mustache twirling bad guys.

I still think that it is an absolute travesty that they didn't give the epilogue cutscene with Ovelia and Delita this treatment! It seems like it would have been a great foil too the cutscene at 13:38
Who else think Agrias Oaks is the most badass female character in the entire FF series? A female Holy Knight protecting a princess. She needs more screen time.

The director of FFT tried to do this with FF12. Guess what happened. Square-Enix said he couldn't have Basch as the main character. Nope, they stuck the angsty annoying teen as the lead. To be fair, he fixed Vaan a bit so he wouldn't such a frustration.
The epicness of this game, and the added epicness of these fullmotion on the psp version made it even more special. I get shiver every time characters talk in the game, the voice actors are too good to be true.

i think what made this game awesome was the chemistry between ramza and delita, you can see it here but also in the plain version, what i miss is no animmated version of gaffgarion!, he was probably my most 3 favorite character apart from ramza, delita
I despise the scorn that is heaped on this retranslation to this day. They took what had one of the most broken and awkward localizations and rose it from ash to be the finest English script of all Final Fantasy, absolutely hands down, the finest. There is great English prose to be found here, although most of it is not in these few animated cut scenes. Although Delita's explanation of his motives to Ovelia here is now absolutely chef kiss perfection. "I will exact from them the price of their gluttonous feast!" And what a reckoning is in store! But, in the end only to add to his sorrow. The retranslation uses metaphor with wild abandon but it's always worded so fitting and delivered so eloquently it never stales. Paramount to all other things is all is done with well executed brevity, that thing which Shakespeare called "the soul of wit". One of my favorite lines is when Folmarv reveals to Ovelia she is not actually Ovelia. It's a good encapsulation of all the qualities I just mentioned: "You are a straw doll placed in an empty crib" It's so needlessly cruel but also says everything at once in one sentence. Her entire life has been a lie, and it still will be, but now you know you are a nothing, you never even got to have your own identity, nobody even knows your name or anything else about you. You are completely replaceable, and the proof of that claim is in you yourself already being a replacement. That you have been was pre-ordained. That you've been locked away with holy men for so long you are become another discardable creature, kept solely for convenient access to a useful name.
Some people may argue that Ovelia was only a puppet manipulated by Delita to serve his own end but I don't buy it. Why try make her the queen of his kingdom if she had no value since she isn't the true princess. Sure you can argue that Delita makes people believe that she was the true princess in order to become king by marriage but after the war, the most important political rivals were assassinated, the former queen has been imprisoned because the former crown was so despised , that bringing up the same royal bloodline on the throne would do more harm than good since people will start another uproar, Ovelia as the queen can however help maintain a good relation with the church but ultimately here comes the question : why Ovelia when others could fill the role ? My answer to that would have been Delita did love Ovelia. Which explains the ending because when Ovelia surprises him by stabbing him immediatly, many among us at his place would have took it as a betrayal from the one we love the most. So naturally before he realises it, his hand have already moved ( because, mind you, being stabbed and feeling betrayed do not help you to keep calm ). That is my point of view.
Marc Foucher - I can't help but agree.... it's truly a hard one to place. I think Delita was so afraid of being betrayed again - that the shock of Ovelia coming at him with a knife made him lose mental focus... the body moves before the mind will. It's all reflexes..

I don’t think we will ever fully know why Delita or people as a whole for that matter do what they do or why they do it... for we are not them and have not lived the lives they have had. We place the judgements and beliefs we have on other people sometimes and expect everyone to follow that. Justice is true and right to every person who believes their beliefs to be true. I too feel Delors went too far.. but this is based on my own moral judgement and not his. Regardless I think that’s what makes tactics a great story. It baffles me that so many people think Delita is a sociopath when he is very obviously a good person. The only real difference between Ramza and Delita is their choice of methods, they are equally noble/good people. "Though our methods be different, our goals are not." Delita is shown throughout the game to be honest, cunning, and yes, at times cutthroat, but never evil. He kills because it is the only way to accomplish his goal, not because he wants to. That is why he fakes the deaths of both Cid and Balmafula. Delita kills in order to SAVE life, much like a military sniper. If it were not necessary, he would not do it, but because it is necessary, he will not hesitate. When he went to the church to meet with ramza, he mentions that he will kill ramza, but only if he absolutely has to. Ramza's actions had no real value without Delita's actions on the other side. They were two sides of the same coin, and both were necessary to achieve a happy Ivalice. Frankly Ovelia is a psycho and stabbed Delita with no provocation or justification. Her claim that he constantly uses people for his own amusement is baseless nonsense. If anything SHE is the sociopath.
I agree, Delita just simply realizes in order for there to be change great action must be taken even at times if it seems a bit over board or betrayal and thats comes from his sister’s death. He understood the corruption and so developed an elaborate plan to collapse both sides. If Ramza stood with his brothers then he would get in the way of Delta’s plan this is when he threatens even him. In the end I believe he played this character so long of assassin and betrayal to reach his goal i believe he lost sight of himself which lead to his action into murdering Ovelia.
She's not a sociopath; she's damaged. If we're going to diagnose her, PTSD is an easy starting point. Otherwise, I agree. Delita is so often severely misunderstood. Somehow, he is, in the end, both triumphant and tragic. Brilliant character.

The very best that Square has ever produced. A shame they haven't expanded on the Ivalice Alliance universe. From all the exposition in FF12, i thought they were gonna do RTS-style prequel about the 13 Zodiac Warriors who originally sealed the great spirits and founded the first Kingdom of Ivalice.
Fun Fact: In Final Fantasy Tactics (taking place centuries after Final Fantasy 12), the War of the Lions is based on the War of the Roses (like Game of Thrones), which immediately followed the Hundred Years War (50 Years War) between England and France (which ended the same year the Ottoman Muslims took Constantinople from the Byzantines). I enjoy watching this after Joan of Arc (1999) and before Dracula Untold and playing.....Assassin's Creed 2!
Was this 2000-1200 some years after FF12 (good memories)? And how did the beautiful & advanced Ivalice of FF12 (mixture of Arabia, Turkey, India and New York City), be reduced (but still beautiful) to the Medieval-Europe Ivalice of Tactics and Vagrant Story?
They Talk About a Cataclysm that destroyed the world some time after FFXII, This is The world after they have rebuilt but never quite achieved their former glory. (And all the Moogles Died in the Cataclysm.
Definitely one of the best final fantasy ever to be made and no one gives it the recognition it deserves. The WHOLE games was on point. Awesome story, baller ass characters, wonderful music...everything. When I saw they were putting ramza in the new dissidia I flipped my shit. Everyone was all on noctis' nuts being in the game and I was like "noctis, who is that nigga?" Lol. Definitely one of the best games EVER!
I played this on the ps1 when I was about 8 or 9 and didn't know what the fuck I was doing. Came back to it on the PSP yeaaaars later and really didn't get into it nor did I complete it. Played/completed it on the vita and loved it!!! Amazing and a shame I didn't experience this story sooner. Maybe I wasn't old enough to appreciate it.

Amazing cutscenes but squeenix chose some of the most unimportant scenes to animate! Ovelia and delitas double stabbing should have been a cutscene and all lucavi should have had one especially the final battle......what we got was fantastic but it could have been so much mormd

If Final Fantasy Tactics gets an antagonist/villain for Dissidia NT, it should NOT be Delita. It should be Folmarv. Forget Ultima as well. We don’t need another mindless death witch ala Cloud of Darkness or Ultimecia. We need someone with substance. Maybe Wiegraf? Also, I demand War of the Lions gets a modern console release. I have a massive itch to play it again.
Delita wasn't the antagonist, but he was definitely the foil to Ramza. Folmov, Delita, Weigraf, and even Dycedarg or Gaffgarion to an extent could be good candidates for his Dissidia counterpart. I do agree that Folmarv should take priority.
Agrias and Ramza? Well, if only the game cared more about Agrias and Gaffgarion. I think Gaffgarion should stay dead, but he shouldn't be forgotten about.
I think it's a reference to the song. It wouldn't be the first time the PS1 version had names be a reference, I've heard that the battle names in the PS1 Midlight's Deep are supposed to be the plot summary of 'Apocalypse Now'.
Well, the WotL translated version is called 'In the name of love', although I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. Delita most certainly did not do anything in the name of love (his ending is him losing everything he really cared about) and Ramza's main goal was to stop the Lucavi and Folmarv with rescuing Alma being a side objective of sorts. I personally think that it may refer to Beowulf Cadmus with his sidequest which was motivated by his love for Reis.

Do you not use Ovelia to fulfill your own ambitions?” *Delita* (narcissistic social climber sociopath): “I cannot say (blah blah) but to save her life I would gladly give my own” -> * stabs her in the stomach * >:( It can't be stressed enough how brilliant is this game, a true masterpiece in every aspect from game design to music and art direction, but especially narrative-wise. Final Fantasy Tactics has the best video game ending ever, and one of the most wonderful stories ever written for a game. That said, Delita is possibly my most hated character in any RPG, in any videogame, in any series! Next to him, Cersei Lannister is almost an endearing little lamb, and Delita’s machinations make Ramsay Bolton and Littlefinger look like noobs! I find Delita… how to put it? He’s far beyond morally reprehensible, using and manipulating everyone, ever lying, always tricking everyone… and he’s so good at it that most players think he actually cared for anything besides revenge and power! Such a revolting despicable being… he’s just TOO REAL! He’s just too fucking real! Perhaps that’s why I always hated him so much: Delita is an eye-opener, a reality check, a lesson in real-life politics and ethics, a lifelong reminder that good only wins in fairy tales. That’s not saying he’s not well written: quite the opposite, he’s too damn well written! He’s probably one of the best characters ever, next to my life-long hero Ramza - “Virtue is persecuted by the wicked more than it is loved by the good.” Few moments in all my gaming history gave so much joy, satisfaction and hope as that moment when Ovelia stabs Delita, and I remember cheering in joy just to be devastated, just some instants later, when Delita survives and kills her! No other game has immersed me, and infuriated me to the point of crying in anger! And what to say of Ramza? And the princess? Oh, the injustice of it all, just like in real life! the rightful heir, murdered in cold blood; the true hero, slandered and exiled! While the villain remains in power, ever remorseless, ever unscrupulous, perpetuating forever the cycle of Machiavellian intrigues, brutality and bloodshed he supposedly stood against. And there’s the genius of this narrative: the strong emotions it still manages to awake in us, through a vibrant (but coherent and cohesive world) and wonderfully complex, masterfully crafted (and yet believable, truly alive) characters, even after 20 years or so after playing it for the first time. The just don't make games like this anymore ^_^
I love Delita’s character - if only because he’s the perfect foil to Ramza. Delita wasn’t always cynical. He didn’t always use people. Look at 6:55 - this isn’t the voice of a master manipulator. This is someone coming of age, desperately grabbing for the simpler times of youth. This one last grass whistle is the last moment Ramza and Delita spent as brothers. Shortly after, the flashback ends. We’re reintroduced to a much different Delita; one who has spent months among nobles. They are the ones who made him cynical, who tried to turn him into a puppet. They prompted him to beat against his lowborn fate and seek something he would otherwise never have. Meanwhile, Ramza has spent the year with mercenaries and commoners. The time spent with them softens his heart to the commoners’ plight, along with the encounters with the Corpse Brigade and Milleuda. Delita, the commoner, acts as self-centeredly as a noble. Ramza, the noble, lowers himself down to the commoners. Both have their personalities changed by this, and the Delita who seeks his ambition has been born. It’s incredibly tragic to think that, had Tietra not been killed, Delita would never have gone on his path of conquest.
I love all of this except one thing you mention "While the villain remains in power, ever remorseless, ever unscrupulous, perpetuating forever the cycle of Machiavellian intrigues, brutality and bloodshed he supposedly stood against" yes he did some questionable stuff on his way to becoming king you have to remember he also ushered in a golden age and 50 years of peace and prosperity for Ivalice as its king something the righteous "heroic" nobles or church could never have achieved and they damn sure dont make them like this anymore sadly
Delita telling my lvl 99 Knight of a Ramza, dual wielding Excaliburs (Switching shield and sword and then Best Fitting that at a shop that has a fur trader, then removing whatever offhand it puts in your off hand trick, I feel old), that he wouldn't hesitate to kill me bro? *Big Loud Laugh! Blame yourself or blame God Delita! Oh and I forgot the happy ending with Olan being burnt at the stake lol left it on an up

I wish final fantasy would go back to ivalice preferably with a new tactics game.....yeah, i know the chances of that happening are almost zero as final fantasy has turned into final fantasy devil may cry with all the jumping around and combos! Even ff7 has lost its turn based system, people seem to think its an old rpg mechanic but its just a different one and imo much better! Oh well, at least the mighty FF12 is being re released at that is my favourite game of all time
Gonna point something out to everyone, and once you know it - you can't unknow it. *Every single cutscene in the game* has a moment where a character will trail off while looking into the middle distance, the screen will go black and the music will stop, then they'll dramatically say a line or two while the screen in black. I have no idea who directed all these cutscenes. Honestly, I'd say they're great in isolation. But thought wasn't taken into consideration how these scenes would interact with eachother. It's extremely silly once you notice :).

Imagine a full movie with these graphics and artstyle. That'd be awesome. The story and the set up and the english script are also very amazing. Gives a very different feel to the medieval political setting.

Ive always loved FFT since it was released....still do....but when i saw these cutscenes and how they remained true to the original art style and were so beautifully voiced and animated you better believe i fell in love with it all over again. One of the greatest experiences in gaming, ever. Theres just nothing quite like it out there.

The only thing about the original that I liked better then the remake was the ending scene where Ramza and Alma ran away from Ivalice.

This game's presentation is elegant and layered, full of nuance. That's what I love about it, even though the Sephiroth-like final boss was obviously shoe-horned in when the devs couldn't think of an actual resolution to the principal plot line.
Ramza's exposure to the "lower class" helped to give him empathy, elevating him above his peers. Delita's exposure to the ruling class and their petty, spiteful scorn of their supposed servants twisted him into a dirty manipulator without a heart or soul.
The game did a great job showing of how individuals respond when subjected to crisis. At first the differences in their character are subtle, but events take their toll and lead them down very different paths based on their personal convictions. FFT had a much more developed narrative than most contemporary works of fiction in that time, ESPECIALLY among videogames.
The best part of the game and plot is the political section, basically Act I. All the demon magic conquer the world stuff that takes over after that, apparently trying to heighten the stakes, just trivializes everything. But that just seems to be Matsuno's M.O. because he does it over and over
I wouldn't say the final boss was shoehorned in. This is a Final Fantasy game. It wasn't ever going to be simply about mortal struggles.

I'm not gonna tell anyone that they should like Ultima as a final boss, but my point is that it's not like the plot was 100% JUST about political intrigue until the last 5 minutes or so.
Even when the whole demon magic side started to become more important it didn't retract from the political drama imo, both things can coexist and in a way feed into each other. Ultima doesn't pop up out of nowhere after all.

The one greatest plot-point of this game.. Ramza's ending is a truly bittersweet tale. Alma and Ramza fight against the Angel of Death, Saint Ajora and are assumed dead. Ramza's heroism would be buried beneath corrupted church documents and never knew what a true hero he really was. Truly the story revolves around two people.. Delita, the pauper become king. and Ramza, the noble son branded heritic..
Delita: The pauper who's remaining family would be taken in by pity by the generosity of the Beoulve family. Eventually he became king and led a new nation's age in the death of corrupt politicians... but in the blood of Princess Ovelia for his callous disregard for human life in pursuit of his own plans. Using anyone and everyone to achieve the mantle of king. Not a single person was a valued member.. but a pawn on his chest board to dismantle the ruling throne.. to build a royalty of his own accord.
Ramza; the noble half-blooded son of the Beoulve family . The son of a noble man, and a peasant woman along with his sister would see nobles squabble.. only to see corrupt politics within his own kingdom and family.. and chose to run from it all. His actions eventually led him into a great underground plot of the Lucavi seeking to return to the realm of Ivalice; even planning to use Alma as the vessel for Saint Ajora, a corrupt angel which the Church of Ivalice followed under the Zodiac. Ramza would give his life, valuing every man and woman in his adventures to stop the Lucavi's uprising... Only to be presumed dead and his legacy to only be unveiled hundreds of years later past his heroism..
Truly, Ramza's story is amazing and saddening for his sacrifice to not be known. For the Beoulve family to fade into obscurity.. and even Ramza's final fate to be unknown.. if he truly did die; Or lived a life without royalty or abnormal entities interfering.

Ramza did what Delita couldn't. He saved the world and his sister. He succeeded side by side with friends that joined him--people he never intended to use. Ramza didn't do any of what he did for lands, for wealth, for title, glory, nor fame. A true hero! That's how we know his story, because of Olan Durai and his descendant Arazlam.

@@The_Gallowglass Olan's ending is the most tragic for me. He stood for the values his foster father instilled in him. Truth, honor and doing what's right, despite how it might affect him. If you accept that Ramza and Alma survive, they presumably got a happy ending. Not so for Olan. He tries to expose the truth and is burned at the stake as a heretic for it.

It's kinda strange though. After playing XII where the design is a notch more towards realism, hearing Balthier's mature, suave, devil-may-care voice come out of soft 'anime' face in a game where most everyone sounds young is weird.

They actually draw inspiration from the same historical war, the War of the Roses. So it's not surprising you'd see some thematic similarities.
The first novel in ASoIaF, A Game of Thrones, was started in 1991 and published in 1996. Final Fantasy Tactics didn't come out until 1997.

possibly the best english localization of any game i've ever encountered. the use of early modern english is god tier, and the dub is excellent as well.
I know your comment is old but still wanted to reply. For me it's FF XII, it has to be the best localization in a video game ever. Second comes this one. Funnily enough both of them are part of the Ivalice Alliance. I wish SE would develop another game in the same setting. I just am in awe with everything Ivalice. Especially the old English and mythos.

I actually kind of like that they kept that scene just in the game’s engine. It adds to the shock by having us not knowing what Ovelia is about to do, while in if it was animated I have no doubt they’d telegraph it.

I was saying that I liked that they kept Ovelia's stabbing Delita in the original graphics engine because a full cinematic would likely telegraph her stabbing Delita. The original was so shocking because I didn't know what she was about to do, so if they made it a cell-shaded cinematic they'd probably telegraph it and ruin that shock factor.
Well, according to Matsuno, she didn't die from the stabbing. Delita truly loved Ovelia, but his actions lead her to not trust him, leading to that scene at the end. So he wouldn't have killed her. @@itsgonnabeanaurfromme
I hate that they didn't animated the ending scene between Ovelia and Delita. That was just a shocking scene that stuck with me for years since I played the playstation version.

@@The_Gallowglass I know. It's one of the saddest and most deepest endings I have ever seen. He fell in love with her or wanted to love her and was trying to be a husband to her, but she knew he had used her to gain power and didn't trust him.
My headcanon is that she no longer cared whether she lived or died at that point. If she killed him, then she avenged herself and everyone dead because of him and if he killed her instead, then she would be at peace.

I'm growing up amongst non-eng speaker in the country where only minority can communicated in english, And FFT gave me the urge to learn English. I remember those times where I spend hours open dictionary to played this game as a kid... but all worth it, big times.
I feel like that with mystical ninja when I was a kid is a good think that sometimes you just search the knowledge
damn mate, i did the same thing as yours. I wrote everything in a book, english words that i didn't know back then and i still have that book. Full of words from FFT scene. Playing FFT with a book, pen and dictionary. Such a beautiful memories.
I don't think I would have appreciated this game as much if I were to play when I was younger. The art style, the game play, the gloriously epic music, all the idiosyncratic detail. I think it all would've gone right over my head. I knew kids in my old neighborhood that would play and talk about this game but I only watched a couple of times and didn't pay much attention at the time. I'm glad I got to experience this on PSP later on. Truly a work of art.
You know, I'm glad that it worked out that way. Some of the spelling mistakes were laughable. But you got to enjoy the game to near perfection, with a ton of bonuses.

So you imagined the 15 year old posh aristocratic "British" boy to sound like a 50+ year old black man putting on his best soft boy voice?
Man, I just realized that opening mission in the game, where Delita is there to abduct Ovelia, that's the most important mission of his life. After that it is all political machinations, but he is on the field capturing the princess for that one mission. And the CG of him at his prime, a knight captain commanding a squad of knights, is what the CG decided to focus on. Not Ramza or the politics or the lay of the land.
Well,Ramza is the unsung hero. The one that faded into obscurity to let Delita take center stage.

Matheus Castro Delita survived and had a long golden reign. Ovelia stabbed him and his instincts kicked in and he stabbed her back. Delita's final scene is wondering if Ramza had it better even though he would likely fade into obscurity. Delita lost everything important to him but became a great king eho vastly improved the country. Ramza saved the country from the shadows whilst going down in history as a heretic for centuries until the Durrai Papers are uncovered. Despite losing his good name Ramza remained true to himself and kept almost everything that was important to him. Delita changed from a pawn to a puppeteer manipulating his friends and allies as a means for his revenge (ie that he a commoner could do a better job than all of those petty nobles).
Delita and Ramza are foils. Where Ramza is a classic hero who briefly falls only to rise to greater heights Delita is a tragic hero/anti hero. Whose noble intentions and goals drive him to personal ruin.
Aru Akise omg I haven't understood that delita survived the stabbing. well, he probably lost everything he valued, but was able to reach to the throne and became a great King. I guess... it was worth it xD

The director of FFT tried to do this with FF12. Guess what happened. Square-Enix said he couldn't have Basch as the main character. Nope, they stuck the angsty annoying teen as the lead. To be fair, he fixed Vaan a bit so he wouldn't such a frustration.

I've never played this version so 26:10 just blew my mind when I heard THAT voice.
I despise the scorn that is heaped on this retranslation to this day. They took what had one of the most broken and awkward localizations and rose it from ash to be the finest English script of all Final Fantasy, absolutely hands down, the finest. There is great English prose to be found here, although most of it is not in these few animated cut scenes. Although Delita's explanation of his motives to Ovelia here is now absolutely chef kiss perfection. "I will exact from them the price of their gluttonous feast!" And what a reckoning is in store! But, in the end only to add to his sorrow.
The retranslation uses metaphor with wild abandon but it's always worded so fitting and delivered so eloquently it never stales.
Paramount to all other things is all is done with well executed brevity, that thing which Shakespeare called "the soul of wit".
One of my favorite lines is when Folmarv reveals to Ovelia she is not actually Ovelia. It's a good encapsulation of all the qualities I just mentioned:
"You are a straw doll placed in an empty crib"
It's so needlessly cruel but also says everything at once in one sentence. Her entire life has been a lie, and it still will be, but now you know you are a nothing, you never even got to have your own identity, nobody even knows your name or anything else about you. You are completely replaceable, and the proof of that claim is in you yourself already being a replacement. That you have been was pre-ordained. That you've been locked away with holy men for so long you are become another discardable creature, kept solely for convenient access to a useful name.
The original fft might be my favorite single player game of all time.. it’s amazing.
Some people may argue that Ovelia was only a puppet manipulated by Delita to serve his own end but I don't buy it. Why try make her the queen of his kingdom if she had no value since she isn't the true princess. Sure you can argue that Delita makes people believe that she was the true princess in order to become king by marriage but after the war, the most important political rivals were assassinated, the former queen has been imprisoned because the former crown was so despised , that bringing up the same royal bloodline on the throne would do more harm than good since people will start another uproar, Ovelia as the queen can however help maintain a good relation with the church but ultimately here comes the question : why Ovelia when others could fill the role ? My answer to that would have been Delita did love Ovelia. Which explains the ending because when Ovelia surprises him by stabbing him immediatly, many among us at his place would have took it as a betrayal from the one we love the most. So naturally before he realises it, his hand have already moved ( because, mind you, being stabbed and feeling betrayed do not help you to keep calm ). That is my point of view.
Marc Foucher - I can't help but agree.... it's truly a hard one to place. I think Delita was so afraid of being betrayed again - that the shock of Ovelia coming at him with a knife made him lose mental focus... the body moves before the mind will. It's all reflexes..

Thomas Bowe - Well Thomas I too wish he’d of joined Ramza and I’m sure Ramza felt the same way. I don’t think we will ever fully know why Delita or people as a whole for that matter do what they do or why they do it... for we are not them and have not lived the lives they have had. We place the judgements and beliefs we have on other people sometimes and expect everyone to follow that. Justice is true and right to every person who believes their beliefs to be true. I too feel Delors went too far.. but this is based on my own moral judgement and not his. Regardless I think that’s what makes tactics a great story. It allows fans like this to debate and share our opinions. I quite enjoy chatting with you all like this.

It baffles me that so many people think Delita is a sociopath when he is very obviously a good person. The only real difference between Ramza and Delita is their choice of methods, they are equally noble/good people. "Though our methods be different, our goals are not." Delita is shown throughout the game to be honest, cunning, and yes, at times cutthroat, but never evil. He kills because it is the only way to accomplish his goal, not because he wants to. That is why he fakes the deaths of both Cid and Balmafula. Delita kills in order to SAVE life, much like a military sniper. If it were not necessary, he would not do it, but because it is necessary, he will not hesitate. When he went to the church to meet with ramza, he mentions that he will kill ramza, but only if he absolutely has to. Ramza's actions had no real value without Delita's actions on the other side. They were two sides of the same coin, and both were necessary to achieve a happy Ivalice. Frankly Ovelia is a psycho and stabbed Delita with no provocation or justification. Her claim that he constantly uses people for his own amusement is baseless nonsense. If anything SHE is the sociopath.

I agree, Delita just simply realizes in order for there to be change great action must be taken even at times if it seems a bit over board or betrayal and thats comes from his sister’s death. He understood the corruption and so developed an elaborate plan to collapse both sides. If Ramza stood with his brothers then he would get in the way of Delta’s plan this is when he threatens even him. In the end I believe he played this character so long of assassin and betrayal to reach his goal i believe he lost sight of himself which lead to his action into murdering Ovelia.

Definitely one of the best final fantasy ever to be made and no one gives it the recognition it deserves. The WHOLE games was on point. Awesome story, baller ass characters, wonderful music...everything. When I saw they were putting ramza in the new dissidia I flipped my shit. Everyone was all on noctis' nuts being in the game and I was like "noctis, who is that nigga?" Lol. Definitely one of the best games EVER!

I played this on the ps1 when I was about 8 or 9 and didn't know what the fuck I was doing. Came back to it on the PSP yeaaaars later and really didn't get into it nor did I complete it. Played/completed it on the vita and loved it!!! Amazing and a shame I didn't experience this story sooner. Maybe I wasn't old enough to appreciate it.

aaaaa i really want to play this version ;___; the character animation truly does akihiko yoshida's crosshatching style justice! i've been playing the original tactics (though i'm barely making progress! some of the early levels are ruthless!!) and some of the translation work makes it hard to understand lol! i still very much like it, as with any matsuno masterpiece!!
Amazing cutscenes but squeenix chose some of the most unimportant scenes to animate! Ovelia and delitas double stabbing should have been a cutscene and all lucavi should have had one especially the final battle......what we got was fantastic but it could have been so much mormd

If Final Fantasy Tactics gets an antagonist/villain for Dissidia NT, it should NOT be Delita. It should be Folmarv. Forget Ultima as well. We don’t need another mindless death witch ala Cloud of Darkness or Ultimecia. We need someone with substance. Maybe Wiegraf?

Delita wasn't the antagonist, but he was definitely the foil to Ramza.
Folmov, Delita, Weigraf, and even Dycedarg or Gaffgarion to an extent could be good candidates for his Dissidia counterpart. I do agree that Folmarv should take priority.

I think it's a reference to the song. It wouldn't be the first time the PS1 version had names be a reference, I've heard that the battle names in the PS1 Midlight's Deep are supposed to be the plot summary of 'Apocalypse Now'.
Well, the WotL translated version is called 'In the name of love', although I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. Delita most certainly did not do anything in the name of love (his ending is him losing everything he really cared about) and Ramza's main goal was to stop the Lucavi and Folmarv with rescuing Alma being a side objective of sorts. I personally think that it may refer to Beowulf Cadmus with his sidequest which was motivated by his love for Reis.

*Delita* (narcissistic social climber sociopath): “I cannot say (blah blah) but to save her life I would gladly give my own” -> * stabs her in the stomach * >:(
It can't be stressed enough how brilliant is this game, a true masterpiece in every aspect from game design to music and art direction, but especially narrative-wise. Final Fantasy Tactics has the best video game ending ever, and one of the most wonderful stories ever written for a game.
That said, Delita is possibly my most hated character in any RPG, in any videogame, in any series! Next to him, Cersei Lannister is almost an endearing little lamb, and Delita’s machinations make Ramsay Bolton and Littlefinger look like noobs! I find Delita… how to put it? He’s far beyond morally reprehensible, using and manipulating everyone, ever lying, always tricking everyone… and he’s so good at it that most players think he actually cared for anything besides revenge and power! Such a revolting despicable being… he’s just TOO REAL!
He’s just too fucking real! Perhaps that’s why I always hated him so much: Delita is an eye-opener, a reality check, a lesson in real-life politics and ethics, a lifelong reminder that good only wins in fairy tales.
That’s not saying he’s not well written: quite the opposite, he’s too damn well written! He’s probably one of the best characters ever, next to my life-long hero Ramza - “Virtue is persecuted by the wicked more than it is loved by the good.”
Few moments in all my gaming history gave so much joy, satisfaction and hope as that moment when Ovelia stabs Delita, and I remember cheering in joy just to be devastated, just some instants later, when Delita survives and kills her! No other game has immersed me, and infuriated me to the point of crying in anger! And what to say of Ramza? And the princess? Oh, the injustice of it all, just like in real life! the rightful heir, murdered in cold blood; the true hero, slandered and exiled! While the villain remains in power, ever remorseless, ever unscrupulous, perpetuating forever the cycle of Machiavellian intrigues, brutality and bloodshed he supposedly stood against.
And there’s the genius of this narrative: the strong emotions it still manages to awake in us, through a vibrant (but coherent and cohesive world) and wonderfully complex, masterfully crafted (and yet believable, truly alive) characters, even after 20 years or so after playing it for the first time.
The just don't make games like this anymore ^_^
I love Delita’s character - if only because he’s the perfect foil to Ramza. Delita wasn’t always cynical. He didn’t always use people. Look at 6:55 - this isn’t the voice of a master manipulator. This is someone coming of age, desperately grabbing for the simpler times of youth. This one last grass whistle is the last moment Ramza and Delita spent as brothers.
Shortly after, the flashback ends. We’re reintroduced to a much different Delita; one who has spent months among nobles. They are the ones who made him cynical, who tried to turn him into a puppet. They prompted him to beat against his lowborn fate and seek something he would otherwise never have.
Meanwhile, Ramza has spent the year with mercenaries and commoners. The time spent with them softens his heart to the commoners’ plight, along with the encounters with the Corpse Brigade and Milleuda.
Delita, the commoner, acts as self-centeredly as a noble. Ramza, the noble, lowers himself down to the commoners. Both have their personalities changed by this, and the Delita who seeks his ambition has been born.
It’s incredibly tragic to think that, had Tietra not been killed, Delita would never have gone on his path of conquest.
I love all of this except one thing you mention "While the villain remains in power, ever remorseless, ever unscrupulous, perpetuating forever the cycle of Machiavellian intrigues, brutality and bloodshed he supposedly stood against" yes he did some questionable stuff on his way to becoming king you have to remember he also ushered in a golden age and 50 years of peace and prosperity for Ivalice as its king something the righteous "heroic" nobles or church could never have achieved and they damn sure dont make them like this anymore sadly

I wish final fantasy would go back to ivalice preferably with a new tactics game.....yeah, i know the chances of that happening are almost zero as final fantasy has turned into final fantasy devil may cry with all the jumping around and combos! Even ff7 has lost its turn based system, people seem to think its an old rpg mechanic but its just a different one and imo much better! Oh well, at least the mighty FF12 is being re released at that is my favourite game of all time

Gonna point something out to everyone, and once you know it - you can't unknow it. *Every single cutscene in the game* has a moment where a character will trail off while looking into the middle distance, the screen will go black and the music will stop, then they'll dramatically say a line or two while the screen in black. I have no idea who directed all these cutscenes. Honestly, I'd say they're great in isolation. But thought wasn't taken into consideration how these scenes would interact with eachother. It's extremely silly once you notice :).
