- This is me and my tech Joey installing the "Randall May Internal Drum Miking System" in one of my Drum Workshop drum sets. Lots of tech-talk, drum porn, power tools, shredding goodness, goofy moves and dumb jokes! You'll love it! For online drum lessons check out www.thomaslangsdrumuniverse.com
From my trials and experiments I found that adding external mic's to all the internal ones, or adding close ambience mic's- boosts each internal signal and actually adds a huge amount of amplitude to each individual internal mic. It's really darn amazing to be able to mix and blend the two mic's before the signal even reaches the pre-amps and desk/interface. It's just a great way to get a fat sound before even touching an EQ or compressor. Me likey mucho! BAM!
Thanks for this! The video is extremely entertaining and helpful. But I was left wondering about this.
So now you have 2 mics on every tom? And mix the internal mic with the external mic through the May Mic blend box?
Thomas, you are such an inspiration to all of us human drummers. I tell people you are the living argument for alien life because the things you do on the kit ARE NOT HUMAN! 😂 but seriously, practicing your linear patterns and focusing on linear motion has really helped me grow as a drummer for over 15 years now. You are easily my favorite drummer. Love ya man. Keep on keepin on. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thomas Lang, first man ever to read the instructions BEFORE setting something up !
when you have multiple dw 9000 pedals cluttered around in your garage and you dont know where they came from, thats when you know you made it
Problems i wish i had lol
@Moises Jerry sweet bro
I guess I’ve made it years ago? 🤔
No phasing issues at all. One mic is inside the drum and picking up a very direct and isolated signal and the other mic is outside picking up very different frequency and amplitude. No cancellation at all, especially because you'd be using two different types of mic's and the 2 mic's are completely separate unlike OH's where phasing is more likely due to the positioning and the fact that the mic's are usually identical and often paired/stereo matched.
His drum tech has to have the coolest job
The whole point is to blend the two mic's before the desk/mixer. No EQ needed, you get the sound by blending the two sources and adjusting the mic position so little or no processing is needed. The blend modules are primarily designed for 2 mic's on one drum (snare top/bottom or kick inside/outside) and after blending you can always EQ/compress and process if needed. You can even blend toms (2 high and 2 low ones together) if you don't mind reducing panorama/spread from 4 to 2 positions.
I absolutely love your playing!
Thomas, thank you for being so cool with the info. You are a nice MONSTER. Now I need to hydrate so that I can watch you kick it. Thank you BRO.
Wait, shit, this isn't a video for an internal milking system? Moving on, then.
Hah I read that the same way when I first saw it
Well now that was hilarious, entertaining and informative. I'm seriously considering buying these, which is how I ended up here. They sound amazing man. Thanks for posting this Thomas, and always a pleasure to hear you play.
" it's called BLEEED! " cracked me up xD
Thomas Lang reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger. ahahahaha
The Drumminator itself! lol. Regards
Considering they’re both Austrian...
Lmao true words.
That kit sounds amazing! So full and rich!
I felt like I spent a day with Thomas Lang
Probably one of the best floor toms I've ever heard.
Thanks for sharing the fun of the May mics! Looks like you had a busy day! Great tunes in the background! :D
Diamond Eyes, good inspiration for drum production. One of the best drum sounds in alternative metal.
It looks and sound great!!! And with the two mic blend system, I bet is sound nice and even with great attack and a fat bottom!! Well done. And for those that didn't like the way it sounded in the video, Thomas was only using the internatl mics with a few ambient mics around the room. When he hooks up the mics for the external mics on the outside of each drum, the attack will come out and then he can start blending both mics for each drum. Well done!!!
Wow. Those toms sound amazing and the kick and snare do as well. I was nervous until you engaged the snare wires.
the attack on that 18 inch FT is insane!!!
Those floor toms sounds so beastly!
Awesome garage!!!
The toms sounds amazing, just perfect :D
Thomas is without a doubt one of the top 5 drummers ever to walk this planet. Just incredible. And seems like a real great guy too!
Bullshit.
Thomas is a technical GOD.
Name me one drummer who could top his limb independence alone.
There are none.
I love everithing, even the snare drum sound.
love the garage as it was, shows a diligent drummer
Sounds great! Can hear the low end on the bass drums really well!
I really hope you do another video with these internal microphones! With eq and also with a song if you can. I want to get some but they are pricey af and want to hear if it’s worth the investment. Sounds really beefy in this video though! Also you are just the freakin best!
This video is awesome, the editing is hilarious. TL is the man
Cool video! I may have to get these! Thomas seems like a really cool dude. He'd be a fun guy to hang out with!
love you home videos! keep em coming
I knew I felt an earthquake today... Senor Lang schoolin' the rest of us as usual.. sounding killer - off to rototom experiment ..thank u Sir. :)
Genius! Gives your toms that movie score appropriate taiko drum sound. Blend that with external mics for attack and you've got yourself an amazing sound!
Thank you!
You're a huge inspiration!
Happy drumming!
really perfect sound, I like it
I hope to be able to afford this system for my 6 piece!! I love his choice of mics. I had a set of Audix and had them stolen out of my trailer. But when I had them, they were terrific!!!! This is great!!
There's so much attack on that 18" FT!
Whatever the mic type and/or placement, this Snare Drum is just a phenomenal Instrument. It seems impossible to make it sound bad. Liebe Grüße aus Graz, Thomas!
"What do we need???" "Beer" "oh, beer. Of course!"
:-D Al Bundy in action! :-P :-D
What kind of German doesn't have any beer at home...???
Hey Thomas you are cool man!!!God bless you.
I wish my garage looked like that.
and a decent kit too
Damn! I love this character sound! power full and shit! I love it
Thomas Lang your the best. you have inspired me for so much. it is my dream to meet you one day! :-)
Haha Thomas man, your sincerity at 2:32 is awesome...
Good choice on the brews!
I like the attacks in the tom is amazing!!!
Salute from ARUBA ! caribbean island !
Sweet kit dude
I agree, there is way too much stick attack so it just sounds artificial and weird. But as stated in the video, there is no EQ so a bit of cutting down on the clippiti clap frequencies and this should sound great.. :)
you are crazy man... so amazing. You are the best drummer in the world in my opinion, i love all your videos. Thank you for posting, so cool. :)
favorite drummer!
Som de bateria MARAVILHOSO
I dig the sounds he was getting with the external mics. The internal mics not so much. They make the drums sounds like he is dribbling basketballs on a playground. It would be interesting to see what happens when its eq'd a bit but I don't think EQ is fixing that.
That sounds awesome man.
Hey Thomas I'll take a couple of those series 9000 bass drum pedals off your hands! Lol!
This dude would be so much damn fun to chill with.
Say what you want, BUUUUT
the longer the bass drum the better it sounds 💯
He's demonstrating how the mics sound when he plays, and his fooling around is better than anything I've ever played...
Thomas i went to see you play at the AUDW this year you were awesome!
Awesome Stella Artois, great Belgian Beer
oh yeah, awesome vid
You are a very talented drummer and did a great job on this. That said, I'm not a fan of the sound of toms and snares which have mic's installed on the inside. It just doesn't sound as well. . I do like the bass drum rail and can see a definite benefit to having that installed. Thank you for this.
If a guy walked into my Grocery store wearing a DW shirt, I'd hug that guy.
hey Thomas, could you explain why you chose the mics you did for the toms. like using the d6 for the the floor toms and the d4 for the rack toms.
Hey Thomas, is this your "main" sound, as in, the way you record most often? or is this system/kit for a specific sound?
That was entertening thanks for it!
haha The Druminator jamming to some Michael Jackson's Human Nature at 4:15. XD Even Thomas Lang can't go a day without MJ.
very cool drum solo
The kick drums have intense attack because the mics pick up the impact through the shell as well, in addition to the air vibrations of the head.
I like the toms the most, the bass drum is alright (especially for metal) but I don't personally care for the snare sound.
An absolute MONSTER!
Stick Trix Thomas, do you find any difference in tone since the air isn't allowed to escape via the air vent (since it's being occupied by the XLR male connector)? That would be my worry. I would think that the lack of air escape might raise the pitch of the drum and also add some unwanted overtones. I didn't really hear that in your drumming but I didn't know if you already accounted for that in the tuning. Thanks for your time.
I believe that connector still allows the air to vent
I was wondering this as well. Imo vent holes serve an important purpose and is dumb to seal them up with a mount. However, I'm sure this wasnt overlooked in the design process
Man those sound good!
What Bass drum heads are thosen the battaer side? Never seen Remo's with the thick black border. almost looked like EMADs.
powerstroke pro
woow you are amazing man , you are my idol jejeje seriously
regards and hugs since Colombia
Exactly. Thanks Steven! T
Man, those kick drums sound so fucking sweet!
That's the best garage ever!
they sound really gooood
never mind you turned the snare on at the end hahahahaha sounds awesome
This is really cool,
You're a gentleman and a scholar.
I am soooo getting these !!!!
this was very amusing
DW sells them and also installs them in your drums if you like.
so do you keep the miss inside the drums when you transport them or would that not be safe for the shells and/or mics.
Thomas is great.
I have two 18 inch floor toms and a 15 inch... they rock
Audix are some of the best overall drum mics ive ever used even the fusion mic kits are good i bought the 4 peice and 6 peice fusion sets for a 9 peice pearl kit and even when the mic is out on top they dont pick up the sound from the next tom its almost like they have a built in noise gate the work great on anything their on but dont pick up surround noise.and i also used the kickdrum mic for floor toms give it much more boom
The system is specifically designed to let air escape through the vent-hole. The mount doesn't obstruct any airflow and won't seal the hole. The plastic wing- nut on the inside has a large hole in the middle and the metal plug on the outside sits on a spacer under which the air escapes. T
That would have been a fun hang! I'm all about that Stella too!
Where are the drums micd solely with the internal micing system, or were external mics used on each drum?
If you use the blend mod for top and bottom head can you just plug it into your daw or mixer??? What input do you use?
So glad I stumbled across your channel :D Every serious drummer knows who you are, don`t think a whole not of 'em know you've got a YT channel though. Love the vid, very informative, when I'm not broke (Drummer's plight, no?), I'll definitely be looking into some of these.
Pretty awesome! I love the low-end that these mics give you from inside the drum! So essentially, in the snare, you pointed the internal downwards and you put an external for the beater head? Also the rest of the externals is on the kicks, overheads and room ambience?
I feel like this is when Thomas Lange Kit sounded the best. I like the new Conch drums (is that how it’s spelled? I don’t know I’m probably wrong)… but holy shit these May internal mics sound absolutely incredible and they sound so beefy and compressed. I just love it… I feel like Thomas sounds the best on compressed Tom’s because you can hear every single blistering stroke. So bad ass! Please Thomas, go back to this…. I’m no expert, just a humble follower. I’ve been learning from Lang for prob 20 years now. I had his double dvd in 2005 lol…. God I’m getting old.
That blend module kind of seems counter productive, if you have two mics going into one output, then how can you adjust phasing issues and individually process the mics?
If I want a more tonal sound can I adjust the mica or should I just stick with external micing?
I love this
I may have missed this answer somewhere, but the randallmay website doesn't offer that adjustable post for the kick. Where could I find that?
Yes they do. It's called the "Monorail"
Also in regards to the snare not sounding good or dead, he only engaged the snare wires for a few seconds towards the end, so it's hard to say it doesn't sound good...I have heard other samples form other artists with MAY mic systems and the snare sounds amazing!
Does the blend module have a reverse phase button?
