      Dude, just don't comment on the classic companions if you don't know what they're doing
      Ace doesn't like baseball- she just used a baseball bat to beat up a Dalek in one of her stories. It's arguably the most iconic moment for her.

      @@steveandjeanniefrith236 I agree- I think a little nostalgia goes a long way. And while I know that everyone likes to act all tough and say that media shouldn't be thinking about the past and always looking forward, I personally think that that's all a load of balloney.
      I think one of Series 11's greatest problems was that it very rarely acknowledged the fact that the show existed before 2018. Other than Jodie Whittaker wearing Peter Capaldi's clothes for the first episode, and the fact that she called herself: "The Doctor," there is literally not a single reason for us to even believe that what we were watching was Doctor Who in the first episode.
      And sure- The Eleventh Hour was the same, but at least that had the TARDIS, as well as those flashbacks to the previous monsters and Doctors and... You know, it was well-written.
      Seasons 7 and 13 also had no returning monsters or anything like that, but at least they had the Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, the Fourth Doctor, and Sarah Jane to convince us that we were still watching the same show as before.

    Those scenes with Tegan and Ace interacting with their Doctors actually do serve a bit of a larger purpose: closure. Both companions are notable for having a complicated relationship with their respective Doctors and didn't leave them on the best of terms. Tegan didn't initially want to travel with the Doctor and spent much of the time with him complaining about wanting to go back home. Then, when he did get her home, she realized that she made a mistake leaving him which ultimately lead to her rejoining him when she encountered him in Amsterdam a year later, only to eventually abruptly leave him after getting tired of all the death and destruction. Meanwhile Ace spent years traveling with the Doctor, constantly coping with his lies and manipulation throughout their travels which ultimately ends with her getting fed up and leaving him (the circumstances of which vary depending on which EU continuity for Seven and Ace you follow). Now I will grant you that at the end of the day this just further proves how ill-suited Jodie Whitaker is for this role that she was unable to have these moments on her own like 10 and 11 did with Sarah Jane and Jo Grant respectively, but as someone who loves both of these companions, I was glad to see both of them get closure with their respective Doctors.

    The parts with 5/Tegan and 7/Ace are absolutely the high parts of the episode and one of the only times I felt genuine emotion throughout the Chibnal era. It felt sincere, it felt EARNED and was actually well written. The rest of the episode? Not so much. The plot is so nothing I felt myself watching the clock a lot of the time. I'll let the review say the rest, but I did enjoy the regeneration. It was simple and suited Jodie's optimistic Doctor. I didn't feel much emotion around it given the rest of the era's sloppiness, but in terms of cinematography, music etc. it was a decent regeneration.

    • @GeriatricFan1963
      @GeriatricFan1963 Рік тому +3

      There seems to be a running theme with Sacha Dhawan's Master throughout the Chibnall era where he is incredibly self-loathing; there's always been an element of the Master being very heavily influenced by the Doctor (I.E. Derek Jacobi's pre-regeneration line: "If the Doctor can be young and strong, then so can I...") but this incarnation takes it to an even bigger extreme. In this episode he makes his Tardis into a parody of the Doctor's, he refers to the Daleks and Cybermen as his own "Fam" equivalent to the Doctor, he overwrites the Doctor's body, and then creates a frankenstein outfit of past Doctors clothes to wear. Before he gets turned back, he says: "I erased you Doctor...Don't let me go back to being me." He is envious of the Doctor and hates himself to the point that he would rather be his own twisted version of the Doctor. To me there is a motive there, and it's the one thing that we aren't bashed over the head with by endless exposition. I get the impression he's become nihilistic and discontent with his lot in life; he wants what the Doctor has, and in typical master fashion, rather than changing his villainous behaviour, (I.E. Missy) he sees the solution as simply stealing the Doctor's body.
      There's also the whole Timeless Child thing, where the Master hates that his existence, and that of the entire Timelord race is predicated on the Doctor being a key part of their origin story; the Doctor is the special one and he is nothing without them. So again, it makes sense to take all of that away from the Doctor, so that he can (even if only technically) become the timeless child, and also tarnish the Doctor's legacy and turn all of her friends against her. However, the way he does it is pretty nonsensical, where the Master-Doctor pilots the Tardis to the Mushroom Kingdom which happens to have a front row seat to an interplanetary war, and then he says to a random space camera that he's the Doctor now and claims responsibility. How that's gonna fool anyone who knows anything about the Doctor I don't know... Cool idea, and I actually really like the way Dhawan plays it since it makes him seem really pathetic and childish, but like with everything in the Chibnall era it doesn't get enough focus here to really breathe.

      @@GeriatricFan1963 I hate that story point . The Doctor has given many hints on how smart and brilliant the Master is . I know the Master can't be th Doctor but three can be a middle ground .

    • @GeriatricFan1963
      @GeriatricFan1963 Рік тому +1

      @@firegirl26 I don't really care for the Timeless Child stuff either, because it's so inconsequential to the Doctor's character, but as a motivating factor for the Master to resent and become jealous of the Doctor I feel it works for me and at least feels consistent every time the Master pops up in the Chibnall era.
      I think a key part of the Master has always been this kind of nature vs nurture debate. The classic series presents the Master as just being twisted and evil by his very nature. With the RTD era we had the Master actually being a victim of the Timelords, driven insane by the neverending drum beat they put in his head. Then the Moffat era gives us Missy, an incarnation who is still chaotic and murderous, but actually wants to be friends with the Doctor again, and fights against her own nature to try and get better, and in the end her past literally won't let her. So the natural evolution from Missy, the closest we have ever had to a redeemed Master, is Dhawan's version, who doesn't have the same impulse control that Missy had. And because he failed as Missy, he ultimately decides: Why bother trying to change? He is miserable and alone, and the only solace he has is inflicting that same pain upon others. Also interesting is the Master-Doctor's reaction when his plan seems to have worked: He's in disbelief. When he angrily and petulantly shouts at Yaz "I am the Doctor!" there's a moment where he looks down almost sadly as it starts to sink in that the Doctor is truly gone. Even when he erases and replaces the Doctor, he cannot stop thinking about them. He's a Master that doesn't want to be the Master anymore, but doesn't see any other way out; no matter how hard he tries to change he will always fail and be back at square one, because he isn't the Doctor. So much of the Dhawan master's mockery of the Doctor comes across as him projecting the things he deep down hates about himself, about what he can't be.

    To me, it was a nice end to Jodie's era. A sweet and lovely goodbye to the joyful Doctor's legacy and an homage to the show's history, bringing back old Doctors, but not making it a multi Doctor special. And of course the Ian Chesterton cameo was very nice.
    Considering that the man is 97 years old, we don't know how much longer we have. Might as well be his final appearance in the role, so I'm glad Chibnall put him in that episode.

    @chrisknight2631 Місяць тому

    Just found your channel, excellent stuff.
    I’ve been slowly watching reviews of this to see if anyone else saw the blatant flaw in the Master’s plan.
    He transferred his consciousness into the Doctor’s body. Body swap. He then changed his new face back to his old one. So he was the master’s consciousness in the master’s face. He’s the master. Wearing the Doctors clothes. Clothes swap.
    His plan was to destroy earth in the doctors name, but everybody would know that he wasn’t the doctor. It made no sense. Now, I get the unlimited regenerations, but this is never mentioned, so it had nothing to do with his plan. He wanted to torment humanity, the doctors friends AS the doctor. Again, he was the master. For the same results, when the doctor was captured (before the forced regen), he could’ve shot her in the head (a death too fast to regenerate from, as per ALL the lore) and simply put her clothes on. Same result but better, as she couldn’t force her way back somehow. Could’ve dropped her in a hole and filled it with concrete. No getting out of that. He went to all the trouble of the forced regen to just wear her clothes. If the unlimited regens were the thing, then he could have kept her captive and studied her.
    What a stupid plan he went with. Absolute nonsense.
    The first part of his plan was the good part. The body swap (although she could still force her way back but nobody knew that was possible). His consciousness, her face and body. He enslaves earth literally as the Doctor. Humanity is betrayed by the Doctor. Humanity is scared of the Doctor. Humanity hates the Doctor.
    Imagine, she (the Master as the Doctor) gets back to Kate, Ace & the other one, all UNIT, Graham, Yaz if they made it happen without her seeing it all, gets them all together, saying the plan has been stopped and then as she’s talking about what she did, she starts laughing and acting a bit manic (it is NEVER revealed why - we know it’s the Master but nobody in-universe does), the whole world is told that the Doctor saved them all and then as he/she is doing a celebratory speech we get some great dialogue where she actually starts to agree with the Master and that humanity is poison etc etc and she thinks she’d like to rule the world/galaxy/universe whatever, the “Emperor Doctor” or something (God maybe?) and then gives the go ahead for the Daleks and the Cybermen to continue the plan, and humanity falls with her cackling away as it happens. Watching everyone who loves her die from the betrayal alone (well not quite die as we’d still need them).
    That is a plan.
    Forget all these time jumps back and forth. The fake arrest plot. The stupid paintings bit. The silly dance (however entertaining it was!).
    Unit discovers an ancient artefact which we alone learn is the consciousness swapper. The first 15 minutes is it being taken to Unit HQ, the gang being called-in, and the cyber attack. A longer version of the scene were the guy is pushed against the wall and dies. A good five minute battle heist scene like that made to look like a long oner. The cybers are successful, teleport out with it. The doctor follows. The Daleks attack other parts of the planet. That second moon appears or whatever. The world is reeling. We see what happens to the doctor but for Unit and the gang, the Daleks stop, and remaining cybers power down, the second moon disappears. The doctor comes back - the world has been saved again. Episode ends with the in universe reveal that the Doctor betrays them and kills literal billions.
    Anyway, I’ll shut up now. As you can see his plan winds me up something ridiculous. To the point of fanfic it seems!!
    Great channel - subbed and looking forward to your newer stuff as well as catching up on the older ones. Just wanted to see if anyone else had the same problems with the Master’s plan. I will find someone but after a year it seems to just be me ☹️

Also a personal gripe I still can’t get over how dumb redundant and impossible regenerating cybermen are, how Yaz knows how the fly the Tardis perfectly when the doctor can’t half the time. Broadchurch had better be the Godfather given how poor his work on Doctor Who is, otherwise I can't believe he was hired anywhere without even a child's understanding of story structure.
    I'm really glad some people liked this era, it means it wasn't a total waste of time and resources. I don't blame the actors, the set designers, any of the people who worked on this. It's the writing and general oversight that is comically bad to an embarrassing degree.

    I'll always argue that the worst offender of this era wasn't S11 or 12 - best described as: kinda dull/ absurd even for sci-fi (even for *DW*)/ annoyingly preachy at points which is almost impressive, cause the new era has tackled a lot of issues but with some level of skill and subtlety. Whereas the levels here were someone yelling "Chris! For goodness sake, Put. The Sledgehammer. DOWN." - but is actually 13/Flux. Because it was *good*. Not great, not even close, but my god!
    After 2 seasons of, Well.., Flux was like finding a Dr. Pepper fountain of youth, in the middle of a desert, during a heatwave! And then they didn't even stick the landing, but instead plowed into the dirt face-first.

    But all the usual Chibnall-isms crept their way in: Big yellow location text, bad exposition and completely wasting good ideas by cramming too much in to give any the light of day.
    I liked the ideas of: The Master is Rasputin, the Master wants to take over the Doctor's body (although it should've stayed as Jodie so she could get a bit more acting in this episode), Dan leaving after a near death experience, the Doctor's hologram version, Jo Martin returning, Yaz learning to fly the Tardis. But all were shoved in together which led to not much exploration of any.
    I did find myself impressed by quite a few of the effects in this one though. That's a thing with a lot of film & tv at the moment, there's great effects back to back with bad ones. At least the good ones in this were quite special, the old Doctors morphing into each other and of course the regenerations. And I did like that shot of Ace falling into the Tardis, that was cool.

    I would say "Praise the show, Jodie's finally gone!" But the end has made me not bother

    Thanks for capturing the series' not so slow descent into narrative stupidity and bad-anime levels of implausibility. It predates Chibnall, but in many ways this episode is an endpoint. Some appalling crap that no one with half a brain and a memory of the show's history can ignore. I remember RTD's first time in charge very fondly. There were basic narrative and character virtues, a concern for verisimilitude, that I hope he keeps. Desperately hope.
